CENSUS 2011 portrayed South Africa as ayouthful nation with the average age of thepopulation at 25 years and a third of the52 million population under the age of 15years.

A youthful nation is generally regardedas a positive development.

The unemployment statistics of theyouth, however, which is estimated to beabout 4,4 million people, are cause for veryserious concern.

It is against this backdrop that AbsaGroup Limited (Absa Bank) organised anentrepreneurship workshop at the RadisonBlu Hotel in Summerstrand last Thursdayto benefit about 150 young people (aged be-tween 14 and 35 years) from across the Nel-son Mandela Bay Metro.

According to Absa Eastern Cape Commu-nication Manager Cathy Schwarz, the cam-paign, which is called “Unlocking Youth Po-tential”, was one of several employee volun-teering opportunities supported by Absa inthe country and Barclays Bank in the restof Africa.

It was premised on Barclay’s commit-ment which is underpinned by a sense ofbusiness purpose - to help individuals, com-munities, businesses and economiesprogress and grow.

“We believe that the future success of ourcommunities and the economies in whichwe operate rely on this next generation hav-ing the right skills to fulfil its potential, ”said Schwarz, adding that the initiative em-powered the youth with skills necessary toachieve financial and economic independ-ence, as well as a sense of security.

The youths, who were identified through

Absa Enterprise Development, participatedin the three-hour coaching and knowledgesharing session which provided insightsand advice on how to start, run and growa small business, thanks to a programme de-veloped by Junior Achievement, an NGO onyouth entrepreneurship.

Port Elizabeth entrepreneurs Boom TownAdvertising and Marketing CEO, Neil Hartand Rachel Deli, Managing Member of Masi-ye Mzantsi Travel Agency provided practi-cal insights into the actual entrepreurshipjourney and inspired would-be entrepre-neurs to take action.

NELSON Mandela Bay Municipalityapproved what it called the pro-poor2013/2014 budget on Friday 7 June.

The R8,6 billion budget, which comprisesa R1,1 billion capital budget and an operatingbudget of R7,5 billion, will be effective from1 July.

Though thebudget reflected tariff increasesin property rates, water, sanitation, refuseand electricity, all political parties represent-ed in council agreed that the budget as wellas the Integrated Development Plan (IDP)would serve the interests of the poormembersof Nelson Mandela Bay communities, accord-ing to acting Communications Director, Mar-tie Nel.Budget andTreasuryPortfolioChairperson

CouncillorBaluNarancalled thebudget “aus-tere and prudent.”He added that it was “unashamedly and un-

apologetically pro-poor” - something the mu-nicipality needed in pursuance of itsmandateof redressing the imbalances and injustices ofthe past suffered by the broad majority of thepeople.“It was clear to the leadership that this

budgetmust be allocated to further transform

the face ofNelsonMandelaBay, improve serv-ice delivery to our residents, enhance thequality of their lives, and restore their digni-ty,” said Naran. The focus of the budget is on human settle-

ments, water services, sanitation, electricityand energy. A large sum of the amount is toaddress the bucket system by building toiletsand replacing the sewerage system, accordingto Nel.

MINISTER of Basic Education Angie Mot-shekga has announced that children will betaught in their mother tongue from GradeR to Grade 3 from the 2014 academic year, and then take English as the Language ofTeaching and Learning from Grade 4 up-wards.

) Prince Mbambaza of Motherwell lovesthe idea. He said, “It’s a good idea. I loveit. Our children fail because they do notlearn in their home language. In their own

language they will get the right foundationand excel in education. I like what KZNdoes; children there are taught in isiZuluuntil they go to university. That is a goodway to promote our own language.”

) “I say no! A child will struggle to speakEnglish if teaching will be in mothertongue. Just imagine when they watch pro-grammes broadcast in English on televi-sion and they don’t understand,” saidZandile Kana of KwaNobuhle, adding thatthose who can’t speak proper English be-

come the laughing stock of thosewho attendformer model C schools and speak betterEnglish.

) “It is not right. Childrenmust be taughtin the mother tongue from Grade R untilthey finish school. Otherwise, how are theygoing to know, love and respect their lan-guage?” asked Nolitha Mahayiya also ofKwaNobuhle.

) Sipho Sokoyi of Motherwell disagreedwith the Minister. He said, “I don’t agree.Childrenmust be taught in English in order

for them to be enlightened. Everythingnowadays is done in English. English is thelingua franca; children taught in isiXhosawon’t mix well with their peers and thatway they will be deprived of more know-ledge and skills to better themselves.”

) “My child is in Grade 2 and can’t readisiXhosa at all. In fact, they are not allowedto speak isiXhosa at school,” said Sindi Bolo-ti of KwaZakhele. She added, “I agree withthe Minister. Mother tongue teaching isgood while children are still very young.”
