ROSLYN BAATJIES

THE South African National Blood Service(SANBS) commemorates World Blood DonorDay on June 14. This is an international dayof recognition of blood donors globally. Thetheme for World Blood Donor Day this yearis “Blood connects us all”.In the face of major communicable disease

epidemics South Africa has maintained ahigh degree of blood safety and a reliable sup-ply of blood countrywide. This is largely because it follows key re-

commendations of the World Health Organi-zation (WHO) on good blood service manage-ment: reliance on unpaid voluntary donors, universal testing of donated blood, and re-duction of unnecessary transfusions.SANBS is yielding positive results across these areas:

•It isoneofthe65countries intheworldthatgets

100 percent of its blood from voluntary donors whoare not remunerated. TheWHOhas a target that by2020 all countries will adopt this model.

•SANBSworks closelywith healthcareworkerswho do transfusions at health facilities to height-en awareness about the correct use of blood thusreducing wastage of this precious resource.

•To keep blood safe SANBS tests every singleunit of blood collected daily for pathogens thatcauseHIV,Hepatitis B andCand syphiliswhich arehighly prevalent in the country. SouthAfrica is oneof few middle-income countries that run nucleicacidamplificationtesting(NAT)whichdetects thepathogens responsible for these epidemics by sig-nificantly reducing the length of the window peri-od.

This is an investment that has givenmanyaccident victims, people suffering fromblood-related diseases and mothers in la-

bour, the opportunity to live healthy lives.Today SANBS has over 400 000 donors on

its database and the number is growing.“SANBS is also getting younger as we are

seeing the proportion of donations from ouryouth increase. We have invested in takinga targeted approach to donor education andcommunity support that moves beyond theneed for blood as medical response but alsoa unifying act of love and care,” said SANBScommunications manager, Vanessa Raju.World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated

in Port Elizabeth on June 11 at BaywestMall, Centre Court in association with Al-goa FM.For more info on how to become a blood

WHAT started out as a humble campaign bya local retailer to collect some clothing itemsfor the needy turned into a project of epic pro-portions, with the total collection of clothing, shoes and blankets tipping the scale at wellover the five-ton mark.

Rafi Sevilya, owner of Rafi’s AppliancesandMattresses, came upon the idea to get theinvolvement of local schools to aid him in thecampaign. The goalwas to bring in 1 000kg of clothing. However, the staff at Rafi’s have been

bowled over by the support this initiative hasreceived and havewatched as quadruple thatamount has been delivered to the shop inCape Road. The incentive presented to the schools was

that the one which brought in the most dona-tions would win two Bosch front-load wash-ing machines - one to keep and one to donateto charity.“We had a giant cardboard washing ma-

chine especially made for the front of thestore to house all the donations,” Sevilya

said.“This was soon too small to accommodate

all the donations we received.“Due to the overwhelming success of this

project I would like to run it annually.”All clothing has been handed over to the

Love Story NPO, which serves the destitutein PE through feeding schemes, clothing dis-tribution and other community upliftmentprojects. From there the clothing will be distributed

DESPITE numerous treat-ments and surgeries to fighthis cancer battle, Jason Sher-man (16) remains positive andhas decided he will try to liveas normal a life as possible.

In 2011 Jason was diagnosedwith osteosarcoma (bone can-cer) in his right femur. The tu-mour was 17cm long.He was rushed to Cape Town

for a biopsy and to have limbsalvage surgery by a specialistorthopaedic surgeon.Thiswas followedbymonths

of chemotherapy and a num-ber of blood transfusions andplatelets and blood tests.“Over the following four

years we had to constantly flyto Cape Town for checkups, which often resulted in neces-sary surgery. Jason had tohave 15 surgeries over this pe-riod. He had to have manyMRI’s, CT scans, x-rays andblood tests over this period be-tween PE and Cape Town,”said Jason’s mother, Jenny. After being in remission for

four years, Jason relapsed. The cancer had returned in

both his right ankle and leftshoulder. Both had to be re-placed in Cape Town.“After these surgeries, Ja-

son tried to live a normal life.

After amonth, during anotherscan, they found the cancerhad returned in both his lefthip and right knee. Jason hadto have more replacements. His femur had already hadplates, screws and implants tokeep the thin fibula frombreaking and to grow onto theremaining bone – this had tobe replaced again, due to thetumour being behind the tita-nium in his knee.”Jason’s new femur/knee

implant had to be custommade, which extended fromhis knee right up past his fe-mur bone. Again, his femurand knee had to be cut openagain. On a further scan, they then

found 6 tumours in his lungs.“Medically, there are no

more treatments available forJason, other than a low doseof chemo formaintenance andperhaps a bit of radiation ifnecessary.”The family’s medical costs

are veryhigh and a fundraiserin the form of a Music Triviais being held to assist them fi-nancially.The Music Trivia will be

held at the Union CricketClub, on Friday, June 17 at6:30pm at R80 per person. For bookings and more info

LONGTIME Nelson Mandela Bay librarian,MariamJordaan (65), is retiringaftermore thanfour decades of overseeing library services.

Jordaan, who currently resides in Parkside, started helping out at the Korsten Library as atemporary libraryassistant in1969, shortlyaftercompleting her matric.“I wasn’t accepted in the field I wanted to

study. While I was at home, a friend asked if Icouldhelp at the librarybecause shewasunableto. I decided this is what I wanted to do.”Jordaansaid thatafter completingher librari-

an diploma at the University of Western Cape(UWC), she later studied part time and graduat-ed with a BA degree at NMMU while workingas a librarian and raising three children withher husband.“I have worked at the Korsten, West End and

Gelvandale libraries and from 2004, I was ap-

pointedasthemanagerof librariesbranchservi-ces and stationed at Brister House.“I can’t believe how time has passed. Things

have really changed and one needs to be flexiblewhen it comes toachangingworkenvironment.“Beingalibrarianhasbeenverysatisfying,es-

pecially at a public library where you get toservethecommunity.Youseethegratitude, howgrateful someone is because you have helpedthem.Workingwith different age groups can bechallenging but I enjoyed my work.”She leaves behind what she described as an

“excellent team”, one that will be remembered.“You can never complete your work entirely

on your own. It takes teamwork. Don’t underes-timate the contribution of others; they all playan important role in our library. I have alwayshadgoodrelationshipswith those Ihaveworkedwith,” she said.Jordaan, an avid reader, has read too many

books to choose a favourite but she enjoys read-ing books by South African authors such as

Riana Scheepers and Rayda Jacobs.“What I will miss the most about my work is

the stimulation - there isalwayssomethinghap-pening. I have worked with people all my lifeand I will miss that. I used to be shy and intro-vertedbut throughworkingat the libraryIhavebecome extroverted.”Jordaan mentioned that although libraries

are changing, the community still relies onpub-lic libraries.“Libraries have changed over the years but

people still make use of them. The resources inlibrarieswere limitedbackthen.Wedidn’thavea photostat machine or computers. There ismore happening now than there was 40 yearsago,” she said.“The majority of the community I deal with

are disadvantaged. Their homes are small; theyneedspace tostudyandhavegroupdiscussions. We also now haveWi-Fi available. I don’t thinkthe internet canreplace theuseofactualbooks,”Jordaan said.

IT was lights, camera, action for a buddingfilmmakerwho took second place in an inter-national filmmaking competition in Roma-nia.

Muhammed Yaseen Moosa Hassim, aGrade 8 pupil from Nizamiye Al-Azhar Insti-tute, represented South Africa in this year’sInfomatrix, an International InformaticsProject Competition. The talented 13-year-old, who recently

achieved second place in the competition, said the experience has been life-changingand surreal.

“It feels surreal. All the other projects wereso good, I didn’t know what to expect.”“It has been a wonderful, life-changing ex-

perience, one of the best experiences I’vehad.”

Hassim added that during the competitionprocess, there were thousands of applicantsbut only about 300 were selected to competein the finals. There were also various competition cate-

gories including programming, robotics, hardware control, computer art, and shortmovies.

Infomatrix is an annual International In-formatics Project Competition with the aimof encouraging young people to apply theirimagination, their passion, and their creativ-ity to technology innovations that can makea difference in the world today.

Thisyear’s shortmovie topicwas“justice”,where participants had a time limit of threeto seven minutes to capture a short moviethat highlighted the topic in a unique way.

Hassim’s short movie titled “Karma”, wasinspired by hearing about situations where agrandfather is rejected by his son and left inan old age home.Thaaqib Adamswho also attends Nizamiye

Al-Azhar Institute was the scriptwriter.“The short movie is about a father who

through the innocenceofhis son, realiseshowbadly he has been treating his own father,”Hassim said.

The short movie was filmed at various pla-ces inPortElizabeth includingAlBadrArabi-ans farm in Sardinia bay, Nizamiye Al-AzharInstitute and the Boardwalk hotel.

“I thought the competition would be chal-lengingbut it turnedout tobeeasyandenjoya-ble. The judges were friendly and gave usefuladvice.

Hassim’s shortmoviecanbeviewedonYou-Tube, titled Karma Infomatrix 2016.

When Hassim is not behind the camera, heenjoys playing sport, reading, watching mov-ies and editing clips. He added that if provided with the opportu-

nity, he would enter more filming competi-tions.

“I amvery grateful for this opportunity giv-en to me by the school, teachers’ support andthe support of my friends. This wouldn’t havebeen as successful without their support andencouragement.”Hassim’s teacher, Fatih Baltan, said the

school is very proud of Hassim’s achieve-ment.

This is not the first time a pupil from Ni-zamiye Al-Azhar Institute has taken a top po-sition in a filmmaking competition. Last year,Naeem Ally, who was in grade 11 at the time, achieved third place in the 2015 Infomatrix.

ISUZU launched in the last quarter oflast year an enhanced and expandedKB range which includes three newmodelsandanupgraded250DTEQen-gine – bringing the total number ofmodels in the range to 18.

Express on Wheels recently spenttime with two of the upgraded andnewmodels: theKB250LEDoubleCab(manual) and KB300 LX Double Cab4x4 (automatic).Thedoublecabsretail fromR344 400

in the KB250 range and from R486 900in the KB300 range. The new models are the all-new

KB300 LX 4x4 Double Cab Automatic,the KB250 Fleetside 4x2 Double Caband theKB250 Fleetside 4x2 ExtendedCab.While theKB250 has been equipped

with an upgraded 250DTEQ engine, the KB300 has been enhanced with anew infotainment andnavigation sys-temwhichincludesatouchscreenandrear camera – a necessity in my opin-ion for any bakkie used on a schoolrun.Muchisbeingdonebyall thebakkie

manufacturers toensure that theirve-hicles have the practicality a bakkieoffers but has a car-like feel and ride–andthat isexactlywhat thetopof therangeKB300LXDoubleCab4x4offers.Not to mention the fact that it is

equippedwithanautomatic transmis-sion that takes away the biggest gripe

I have with bakkies – changing thosestubborn gears. While theKB 300 LX 4x4 double cab

automatic is a completely newmodel, the other LXmodels have all been up-dated with new comfort and conve-nience features for the double and ex-tended cab derivatives. These include a touch screen info-

tainmentsystemwithsatellitenaviga-tion, internet, WiFi, and smartphoneintegration.Thescreenactsas thedis-play when browsing, or using theDVDplayer. Italso integrateswiththeRear Park Assist reversing camera.Keyless entry with a Start/Stop ig-

nitionbutton is standardonalldoublecabLX-modelswhile leather is availa-ble as an option. The KB 300 is available in manual

or auto and in 4x2 or 4x4. The 5-speedautomatic transmission on the top oftherangeKB300,hasmanualgearcon-trol if thedriverwantstochangegearspersonally. The 3.0-litre DTEQ turbocharged

diesel delivers 130kWand380Nm.Thecombined cycle fuel consumption isgiven as 7.9 litres per 100 km for the4x4 double cab and extended cabmod-els.The fuel consumptionof thesinglecab 4x2 is given as of 7.7/100 km, withthe 4x4 version 8/100 km.

KB250 Fleetside Double CabThe Fleetside models are the work-

horses in the range to attract business

users. While frills are secondary tothese buyers, the new Fleetside mod-els do get useful features such as a ra-dio/CDwithBluetoothenabledsoundsystem for easy phone integration. The KB250 Double Cab is powered

by an upgraded, high output versionof the 2.5-litre DTEQ common-rail di-rect injection turbodiesel rated at100kW and 320Nm.According to Isuzu this upgraded

engine has a 20 percent increase intorque at 1 200 rpmandamuchwiderpower band compared to its predeces-sor.

Upgraded safety featuresAll LE, LXmodels and the two new

Fleetside models boast an electronicstability control (ESC). All, but a pairof base specification single cabs, areequipped with ESC.TheKBrangehasa full-houseof the

safety features not so long ago associ-ated with luxury performance cars.As well as the new stability/tractioncontrol pairing, ABS, EBD and EBAarestandardonallmodelswiththeex-ceptionof2.5LEED(Lowpressuretur-bo) models.

The verdict after test driving it:

KB250 LE Double Cab:It very much sounds like a bakkie,

and as much as improvements havebeen done to the interior it still looks

like the workhorse it is.Some of the comfort features I like

are the electric windows and controlsfor the audio system on the steeringwheel in the model test driven. Thelayoutof theaudiosystemonthedash-board is simple and easy to operate.Legroomisalsogood for thepassen-

gers in the back.Unfortunately the KB250 only

comes in a manual transmission. ButImustadmit thatmuchhasbeendoneto make changing gears in the Isuzua lot easier on the arms.It offers a solid drive and it wasn’t

as “floaty”on theopenroadas Iwouldhave expected. And considering thatthe test drive was done mostly on themom’staxiroutescatteredwithspeed-humps and traffic circles and tightparkingspacesat theshoppingcentre,I foundtheIsuzudealinginquiteadig-nified way with the obstacles of theconcrete jungle.

I would, however, have liked a rearcamera to be available on this modeltoo.

KB300 LX 4x4 Double Cab Auto(Price: R563 500)After the practicality-focused KB

250, the KB300’s luxury and comfortfeatureswerequitepleasing. It isadie-sel bakkie and sounds like a dieselbakkiewhenthe ignition is turnedon, but once it gets going the noise levelsare impressively low. There is enough room in the back

for the kids and their bags and I likedthe high seating position, the keylessentrywith stop /start button and con-trols for theaudio systemon the steer-ing wheel.I did enjoy the automatic gearbox

and found the ride and gear shiftingsmooth–evenonthemom’s taxiroutewith lots of stopping and going, slow-ing down and speeding up.

THE St Lawrence Seaway is transformedthis weekend into the seventh round of the2016 F1 season as it hosts the famed Canadi-an Grand Prix.Named after one of the greatest drivers in

F1 history, the circuit Gilles Villeneuve hasa distinct street-like feel thanks to the closeproximity of the barriers. Its long straights, with a top speed of 330 kph, make it a highlypower sensitive circuit with a heavy focuson braking performance.“The track is quite special as it has a lot

of long straights and then slow corners withlow grip so we have to find the right balancewith our setup. You’re very close to thewalls so there is a special feeling to drivethere,” says Red Bull driver Max Verstap-pen.The track surface, rarely used throughout

the year, is relatively green but grip rampsup exponentially as the weekend progress-es. Coupled with variable weather condi-tions, which often tend to the cooler end ofthe spectrum, it makes getting the tyres totheir prime operating temperature tricky. In terms of tyre strategy Pirelli has made

the soft, supersoft, and ultrasoft compoundavailable. In particular, the Renault and

Haas F1 Team will be worth keeping an eyeon as neither pair of drivers has chosen asingle set of the red-walled supersoft tyre.Occasionally the lack of proper overtak-

ing opportunity can turn the race in a pro-cession. However, it has delivered severaldramatic and memorable races over theyears. As if perfectly scripted, the first racein 1978 was won by Gilles Villeneuve in aFerrari.Throughout the years that followed, Fer-

rari’s love affair with the Montreal circuitdeepened. With seven victories MichaelSchumacher holds the record for the mostCanadian GP victories while Ferrari andMcLaren boast thirteen wins each as con-structors.In 2015 Lewis Hamilton led home team-

mate Nico Rosberg for a Mercedes one-two.However, it wasn’t a straightforward victo-ry for the championship winning team.Twelve months ago sky-high brake temper-atures plagued the pair throughout the raceand required drastic management. In 2014the failure of the brake-by-wire systemforced Hamilton into retirement and Ros-berg on to the defensive, which allowed RedBull’s Daniel Ricciardo to take his first

Grand Prix win. This year the competition appears a bit

closer to the Silver Arrows. In Spain andMonaco, circuits that share several similar-ities with Canada, Red Bull showed theircompetitiveness. Add to the fact that theRenault upgrade should come into its ownaround this track and Daniel Ricciardo andMax Verstappen should be more than a nui-sance to Mercedes this weekend. It isn’t just Red Bull snapping at Mer-

cedes’ heels either. Ferrari will be the firstto admit that their season hasn’t quite goneto plan. Mistakes and unreliability havecost the Italian team a slew of points in thefirst few races of 2016 but they’re not lettingup any time soon. This weekend Ferrari is expected to run

a new rear suspension in the hopes of im-proving downforce as well as other aerody-namic upgrades. They are also introducinga new Shell fuel and a new turbo, which isexpected to yieldmore hybrid power and im-prove reliability.Mercedes are far from sitting ducks and

will, just like the others, continue to pushahead. But they’re under a bit more pres-sure than they’re used to.
