AN estimated R12 million storm-water project that is said to betterinfrastructure in Lorraine, is cur-rently in process at the MaconRoad reserve.

“This is something that I havebeen fighting sixteen years for,”Ward 8 councillor, Gustav Rauten-bach, said.

“When I was appointed as coun-cillor in 2000, I immediately identi-fied poor infrastructure as a prob-lem in this area. The currentstormwater pipes are more thanforty years old and cannot handlethe pressure anymore. This, to-gether with the area’s high watertable, causes stormwater south ofthe railway line at CarringtonRoad to flow over to the northernside every time it rains. I thereforemadeitmydutytoaddressthisma-jor problem,” he added.

According to the councillor, theproject comprises the installationof approximately 1175 metres ofbulk stormwater pipelines, com-plete with the construction of asso-

ciated stormwater structures suchas manholes, head walls, culvertsand erosion protection systems.

“Theinstallationof thenew,big-ger pipes will take about 4 to 6months to complete and will resultin major benefits for Lorraine. Notonly is there a possibility of morejob opportunities than the six thatthe project has already created forlocals, but as soon as the new pipesare in use, the water flow to thenorthern side of Lorraine will bea thing of the past,” said Council-lor Rautenbach.

Thecommunityalsoseemstoberesponding quite positively to thisproject. “The few people that Ihave spoken to so far are very hap-py that the project is finally under-way, because it is a definite needin the community,” said commu-nity liaison officer, Dries van derWesthuizen.

“Iamecstatic thatIhaveeventu-ally succeeded in getting thisproject off the ground,” the coun-cillor said. “This is a sign that Idon’t give up and I shall continueto fight for the improvement of in-frastructure.”

A NEW partnership will see one ofSouth Africa’s top six festivals con-tinue to grow and contribute tocommunity upliftment in the Sun-days River, according to SPARKirkwood Wildsfees board chair-man Paul Marais.

“We are delighted and honouredthat the SPAR group has decided to

‘gowild’withusforat least thenextthree years as the naming spon-sor,” he says.

The 15-year-old festival is one ofthe only in the country to be ownedby the community through a not-for-profit company.

“Givingbacktothelocalcommu-nity is one of the key objectives of

the SPAR Group. Partnering witha festival of this professional cali-bre that aims at enriching the im-mediate community, seemed a nat-ural fit,” says Abri Swart, Market-ingDirectorofSPAREasternCape.

“The SPAR concept was estab-lished more than 80 years ago onthe basis that working in partner-

ship is to the benefit of customers, retailers, wholesalers and the foodindustry. This extends to our spon-sorship of events such as the SPARKirkwood Wildsfees.”

Preparations are already wellunder way for the 2016 SPAR Kirk-wood Wildsfees, which will be heldfrom June 24 to June 27. – REPORTER

ADINNER,danceandwalkdownmemory lanecan be expected at Westview School’s past pu-pils’ reunion which takes place Friday, May 6,as part of the school’s 55th anniversary celebra-tion.

Westview is one of only three special schoolsin the Eastern Cape. The school strives to pre-pare pupils to enter the labour-market and util-ise their potential.Westview School’s principal, Johan Hermé

Zietsman, who has been principal for 20 yearsand has served the school for almost four dec-ades, said he is proud of the past pupils as themajorityof themhavebeensuccessful in the jobmarket.“Theofficial openingof theschoolwas in1961

onMay 5 and that is why our birthday celebra-tionswill beonMay5wherewewill have some-thing for the children.“TheFriday (May6) eveningwe’vegot the re-

unionwith all the old scholars. This is not a re-union for a particular year group – all pastscholars can attend as we are celebrating 55years,” Zietsman said.He added that there is a demand for schools

wherepupils are taughthowtoenhanceandde-velop their skills. He alsomentioned thatWest-view currently has 721 pupils and 48 teachers.“Every year we get around 550 applications

for grade 8 andwecan only accom-modate around180 – 200, so thatmeans there issuch a demand for

skills education.“This is a school for skill so we don’t follow

the normal curriculum like the mainstreamschools. We’ve got learners for only grades 8, 9and 10 here. After grade 10, they have to go intothe job market,” Zietsman said.Westviewoffers awidevariety of learningar-

eas and skills including panel-beating/spray-painting, hairdressing, woodwork, nursing, motorvehicle repairing, welding, hotelkeepingand catering, entrepreneurship and dressmak-ing, and signwriting. The school bell rang for the first timeatWest-

view on Wednesday, January 18, 1961. Theschool building had not been completed at thatstage but therewas enough space for 183 pupilsand 15 teachers. These teachers started teach-ing without a desk or any stationery.Theschoolbuildingwascompletedbytheend

of March 1961 and it was officially inauguratedon May 5 of the same year by D.J Liebenberg, theSuperintendentGeneral ofEducationat thetime. The school could only accommodate 240 pu-

pils in those early years and many applicantscouldnot beaccepted. In 1972 the schoolwas en-larged to accommodate 480 pupils. The schoolcurrently has more than 700 pupils.Westview’s reunionstarts at 6:30 for 7pm.For

irriteer my nogal.

RFROM:

EVEN AT age 11 “Toetie” was showing a spe-cial love for rugby – and one fancies thatmanyyears earlier the opposition of two scrum-halves in the Springboks Tests against RobinThompson’s 1955 British Lions would have in-spiredAllisterCoetzee to followinthe footstepsof these twoequallysmall fellows,TommyGen-tles and Dicky Jeeps, in that Test series. The stirring Test battles between these two

shorties – a history that might almost havecome out of a Boys Own annual – must surelyhave inspired the young Coetzee to follow intheir footsteps;becomeatop-classscrumhalf inthe samemould. For the short stocky lad fromthe EasternCape the positionwas tailor-made,as was the nickname “Toetie”, which capturedthe youngster’s build... well yes, “to a T”. Nowat the ripe old age of 53 he reaches the pinnacleofhiscareernextmonth.Happybirthday,Toet-ie!No, he would never become a Springbok. It

wasn’t quite the done thing in those days. Buthewould be highly ranked enough to be a Jun-ior Springbok in l992 and to represent EasternProvince in the Currie Cup between 1992 and1996. He also represented the PE-based team inthe1994Super10competition.Earlier,between1988 and 1991 he captained the SARU nationalteam, as it was then known. The former schoolteacher retired from the

game in 1996 and was immediately appointedassistant coach forEP in1996.Next stepupwascoaching Emerging Springboks in 2001, whilea year earlier he’d also climbed another rungup the coaching ladder with his appointmentasoneof theassistants toheadcoachHarryVil-joen’s Springboks. And the climb continued.Eastern Province’s head coach from 2001 –

the first black coach of a provincial side in

South Africa – he remained EP’s number oneuntil resigning in July 2003.It’s been a long and mainly successful road

for “Toetie”. Backline Stormers’ coach in 2008and WP Currie Cup head coach. Now well onhiswayCoetzee ledtheStormers to threeSouthAfrican Conference titles during his tenure ashead coach andwas also successful withWest-ern Province, winning the Currie Cup twice in2012 and 2014. What’s more he’s worked withsomeof thebest: IanMcIntoshwith theSharks,HarryViljoen and JakeWhitewith the nation-al squad. There’s also his major head coachstintwithWesternProvince2008-15 (108match-es). These are just some of the coaching posi-tions Coetzee, mainly with outstanding suc-cess, has held.Teaching is in the blood of the Coetzee fami-

ly. His late father Phillip was a schoolteacher, soarehis twobrothers, his sisterandhissister-in-law and his wife, Dianne. Some are princi-pals or school vice-principals.The Boks, no doubt, are in good hands.

“Teachingmust be in our blood,” says Coetzee.“I was a fulltime teacher myself for 18 years.”He takes his work seriously. In Japan he soonlearnt enough of the language so as to enablehim to greet his players correctly on theirbirthdays!Switching to events slightlymoremundane,

it must’ve been heartening to Lions coach, Jo-hanAckermann, tohear formerBokcoachandTVcommentator,NickMallett, describe theLi-ons-Stormers game at Ellis Park as “outstand-ing, a really finegameof rugby”. (Lionspullingoff an exciting 29-22win.)Mallett even going sofaras to suggestEltonJantjiesandFafdeKlerkat halfback for the coming Tests against Ire-land. Now there’s a thought for you!

As good as new,

FOR years we’ve been frustratingly callingfor Nico Rosberg to up his game. With a thirdwin out of three in 2016 he’s done it.

The German driver effortlessly convertedpole position into victory as the chaos unfold-ed behind his Mercedes. However, it was sec-ond-placed starter Daniel Ricciardo whosnatched the lead of the race off the line in hisRed Bull.

Behind this pair the two Ferraris of KimiRaikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, startingthird and fourth, looked set to challenge forthe race win until Vettel barged into the sideof Raikkonen to avoid the sister Red Bull ofDannil Kvyat on his inside.

Although Vettel recovered to second placein the end it was a sloppy race for the four-time champion. The clash with teammateRaikkonen caused damage to his front-wingwhich required replacing. But it would bedamaged again as he tried to find hisway pastthe Williams of Valtteri Bottas.

Visibility in F1 car is limited but into sucha tight corner Vettel should’ve been aware ofRaikkonen on his outside given that he start-ed close to him on the grid. Though the Ger-man did his best to shift blame to Dannil Kvy-at the Russian driver was well within hisrights to place his car alongside Vettel’s Fer-rari into turn one.

Kvyat eventually finished third and despitea confrontation with Vettel after the racewasn’t unhappy at all to secure only the sec-ond podium of his career.Raikkonen’s front-wing damage and punc-

tured tyremeant into turnonehehad to crawlaround the entire lap to make it back to thepitlane. It droppedhimright to the back of thefield and onto an alternative strategy whichhadhimrunningon thewhite-walledmediumtyre in the middle stint of the race.

The Finn who had shown great pacethroughout the weekend was able to resist anattack from Hamilton on quicker tyres. It left

the soft, yellow-walled, tyre for the final stintof the race and with it Raikkonen was able tomakeupenoughpositions toultimately finishfifth.Even Lewis Hamilton was involved in the

mess of the opening lap. After starting last fol-lowing an overnight power unit change theBrit also lost his front-wing and sustaineddamage to his barge board into turn one.In the lead of the race Daniel Ricciardo’s

hopes evaporated as he picked up a left-rearpuncture on lap three. Ricciardo was able torecover to fourth.

If it wasn’t clear before why both Mercedesand Ferrari refused to provide the Red Bullteamwith an engine from their shed it is sure-ly clear now. The 2016 Red Bull car is a greatchassis, with two great drivers and all they’remissing is a great engine.Debris fromRicciardo’s blown tyreprompt-

ed the deployment of the safety car and driv-ers took the opportunity to fit the more dura-ble soft andmedium tyres. BehindRaikkonenin fifth Williams’ Felipe Massa was able tohold onto sixth while Hamilton had to settlefor seventh.

Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen finishedeighth ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz inninth and the secondWilliams ofValtteri Bot-tas roundedout the top ten.Despitenumerousincidents throughout the race all twenty-twocars saw the chequered flag at the end of therace.Since the start of the 2016 season things ha-

ven’t been going Lewis Hamilton’s way. Lessthan ideal startsoff the line, unreliability, anddamage early in the last two races have se-verely tested the champion. His response hasbeen to remain remarkably cool about it all.

However, three victories and a thirty-six-point lead in the driver’s championship for aperfect Nico Rosberg is getting to be a bittight. It’s a good thing Lewis Hamilton likesa fight because he has a big one on his handsnow.
