On Sunday April 10, Nelson Mandela Bay will be swarming with all that is IRONMAN and thousands of IRONFans that will be hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite IRONMAN. Due to a change of the course of the race, the bike course now takes athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90 km on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the IRONMAN circuit. The new route takes athletes along the coast at Marine Drive, delivering sweeping views of the ocean and the rugged coastline along a ma- rine protected area, before moving slightly in- land at Seaview on an undulating scenic coun- tryside section. Athletes return along the coast to the transi- tion area to start the run. With the first change to the run course in its eleven-year history, the new run course will bring athletes closer to their fans and friends than ever thanks to four loops along Marine Drive where a whopping 100 000 IRONFans are expected to show their support. The swim start is at 6:30am on Sunday morn- ing, and spectators can make their way to Hobie Beach to view the exciting start of the race when athletes begin their swim towards Kings Beach. The bike portion of the race is expected to start around 7:45am. From this time, right until ap- proximately 4:15pm, spectators and residents of Marine Drive, Schoenmakerskop, Beachview and Sardinia Bay can expect athletes to pass by. IRONFans and spectators can expect some of the professional athletes to begin their run por- tion of the race around 1:20pm and the cut off time for the last athlete will be approximately at 11:55pm. The run portion will be able to be viewed on Marine Drive from Second Avenue to Admiral- ty Way. The men’s challenge will be one of the most open races in the history of the event with a strong, balanced professional men’s field set to line up on Sunday. With an impressive record and having won in South Africa in 2013, Swiss athlete Ronnie Schildknecht will be one to watch. Schildknecht became the first man to win sev- en consecutive IRONMAN titles at IRONMAN Switzerland in 2013. The South African challenge will be an inter- esting one with Matt Trautman, James Cunna- ma and Kyle Buckingham all capable of achiev- ing the win. The women’s event will also be raced by one of the strongest professional women’s fields that this event has ever seen. Defending champion Jodie Swallow (34), will have to pull out all the stops to ensure that she can claim back-to-back wins at the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship. Fellow Brit and four-time IRONMAN champi- on, Lucy Gossage (36), will be aiming to claim top spot after her impressive second place finish in 2015. Another resilient contender from the United Kingdom is Susie Cheetham (30). To those who would not like to miss out on the action, but cannot make it down to the action, live streaming of the race will be up and running at www.ironman.com. Pictured is Port Elizabeth estate agent, Mariëtte Hattingh training for her 10th Ironman competi- tion. Hattingh is one of the favourites to win her age group (50 to 54 years). In Port Elizabeth she has already won her age group three times. If she wins again, she can expect her fourth invitation to the Ironman World Champi- onship in Kona, Hawaii, where she hopes to achieve a first time top-10 position in her age group. My husband left me and went to London withanother woman for 5 years! There has been nothing doneabout it, and instead the university knows thatstudents will eventually stop coming to classeswhen they have to stand in the hallway for eachclass. I’mnot talkingaboutaseatingproblemforone or two extra students. I’m talking 50+ stu-dents either sitting along the stairs or outside ofclasses inhopes togeta tinyhintofwhat isbeingsaid in the lecture.”De Lange added, “This is an issue that the

timetabling office is well aware of, yet nothinghas, more likelywon’t be done. It is now the end

Inotherclass-es there areNOtables or chairs.Where studentshave to go beg borrowand steal chairs fromoth-er classes, leaving many sitting on tables.”“They’ve enrolled more than 15 000 new stu-

dents in 2016; they cannot even seat the currentstudents. If paying R20000- R50000 per year onlyto have to sit in hallways or not even comingclose to entering the class is what you’re after, then you’ve found a winner,” she wrote.NMMU’s Facebook page responded to De

Lange’s post and mentioned, “We are aware ofthe present challenges and understand yourfrustration.Wewill pass this information on tothe relevant staff.”NMMU spokesperson Debbie Derry said

NMMU is aware of overcrowding in some of itsvenues and is working to resolve these challen-ges.“The university faces such challenges annu-

allyasit triestoanticipatenumbersandallocatelecture venues accordingly. This year it hasbeen faced with the additional challenges be-cause of the interventions to assist academical-

ly deserving but financially-disadvantaged stu-dents at NMMU. The knock-on effect has beenan increase in module registrations – a 10% in-crease, as opposed to the usual 2% increase,”Derry said. She added that at present, NMMUhas about 2 100 modules on the timetable. Thistranslates to around 8 000 classes that are sched-uled on the timetable in terms of the curricu-lums of around 350 progammes.“This aside, NMMU acknowledges that stu-

venues in the Science buildings ahead of time toaccommodatestudentsinovercrowdedvenues,”Derry said.“Though the figures supplied by the student

in the Facebook post are inaccurate (we havewelcomed about 6 000 first-year students), thisshould not detract from the students’ very realconcerns. We acknowledged the students’ postwhen it appeared,” she added.“NMMU apologises for any inconvenience

caused and wishes to assure its students that itis endeavouring to rectify the issue of over-crowding.” – REPORTER

PORT Elizabeth’s well-known landmark, the Campa-nile Memorial, is currently being refurbished.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency(MBDA) have been assigned with the monument’s re-furbishment which should be completed next year.

MBDA marketing and communications managerLuvuyo Bangazi, said part of the work and renovationplanning have already taken place last month.“If all goes according to plan, the Campanile will

be reopened to the public by March or April nextyear,” Bangazi said.He added that Campanile Memorial renovations

will cost about R5 million.

PE landmark receivesoverduemakeover

“We do have a budget that we are work-ing on. We do not have a final budget butroughly just over R5 million is estimatedat the moment,” Bongazi said. The Campanile Memorial is about 53.5m

tall with 204 steps which lead to the topof the tower where a carillon of 23 hugebells can be viewed.Bongazi explained that the Campanile

Memorial’s makeover has been long over-due.“The Campanile is 92 years old; the bells

are about 83 years old. The Campanile haswithstood weather impacts, storms andfloods. A structural assessment has beenconducted and a lot of work needs to bedone.”“The structural assessment showed that

the Campanile is not safe. The steel struc-ture where the bells hang is the most af-fected. The building is 92 years old and itshould have been restored long ago,” hesaid. The Campanile, which was built to com-

memorate the 1820 Settlers, stands in JettyStreet and took up to five years to build.Bongazi mentioned that they are plan-

ning to modernise the building.“We are looking at modernising the

Campanile by bringing cultural themes tothe bell mechanisms. The modernising isto be in relation to the history but also rel-evant to current democracy,” he said.

Skenk ’nboekenhelp ’nkind lees

AFTER 20 PAINFUL YEARS – MAMA EVAIn my broken family

For many years I have suffered in my marriage, I had daily fights with my husband and I had no peace becauseof my jealous family, friends and my in-laws who also hated me. I felt betrayed and heartbroken by my own people, sleepless nights and stress nearly killed me. I tried many healers but they all failed to help until I heard about Evaon Radio. With the only R200 I had in life, Eva took my fortune readings and surprised me by tellingaccurately about my husband`s hidden family secrets. They then made special prayers and gave me powerful Indianherbal holy water for cleansing and special oil. Within just days a miracle happened , all my enemies and family in-lawswho hated me came back to make peace with me. After suffering 20 painful years, today we are the happiest coupleand I am grateful. Because of Eva’s special prayers of blessings, I have became a successful business woman.

THE KISS of Death belongs to the crime nov-el. The Smile of Death in cricketing terms be-longs with little doubt to a fair-haired NewZealand rugby fullback named DamianMcKenzie. He is just 20 and last weekend, leading the Chiefs’ 48-23 demolition of theBrumbies in Canberra, he must surely haveanxiety-packed shivers down the spines ofhis opponents whenever he touched the ball.

It’s all in the cheeky grin he directs at thevery heart of the TV camera as he lines uphis kicks at the posts. It’s enough to unsettlethe toughest opponents. It certainly looked that way as the young-

ster sent three conversions and four penal-ties through the posts, and for good measureadded a try – his seventh of the season – inthe dying minutes of the Chiefs’ defeat of theBrumbies. The overall tally of 23 points fromMcKenzie made up very nearly half histeam’s winning total.Watch this youngster. He has every reason

to grin. Playing this kind of rugby it can’t belong before this young smiling assassinclimbs to his highest rung of his country’srugby ladder – the right to wear theAll Blackjersey itself.Nearer home – Jo’burg’s Ellis Park – the

Lions somehow managed to squander 60 %of possession against the visiting Crusadersto go down to the New Zealanders in a tight,hard-fought match. This was not the usual li-on-hearted stuff from the local side and coachJohan Ackermann must have seethed atsome of the chances his team let slip.To a disappointingly small crowd here at

home in PE, the SouthernKings scored a see-

sawing 33-28 victory over the Sunwolves. Itwas the Kings’ first Super Rugby win of theseason. The teams were 23-23 at the break. Itwas a much-improved outing by the EasternCape outfit, who were particularly impress-ive on defence. The Bulls at home to the Cheetahs – after

leading 20-10 at the break – just managed tohold on for a 23-18 win in a tense second half. The Free Staters, too, showed great courageon defence. It looked like anybody’s game ina tense first half as the visitors graduallyfought their way back. But it was not to beas the Bulls hung on tenaciously.Don’t ask what cuss word burst from Dur-

ban-born England opening batsman, JasonRoy’s lips as he rejoined his teammates afterhis knock in the final of theWorldT20 cricketmatch against the West Indies in Kolkata atthe weekend. Who could blame him? He wasout for a very large ugly duck to the secondball of the match.Things might have been much different if

he’d delivered his usual steady contributionto England’s tally. With the game see-sawingback and forth until Englandwere finally outfor 156 it was still anyone’s game. The West Indians, too, lost early wickets

and with three overs to go the game was stillvery much in the balance. In a thrilling fin-ish, however, Windies’ hero, Marlon Samu-els, and the toweringyoungBraithwaite, alsoundefeated, after smashing four successivesixes, saw the West Indies grab a memorablevictory. What a match it was! With cricket and rugby of this calibre to

stay at home for, one has to wonder: how arethe movie theatres doing these days!

FOR nine years the Bahrain Grand Prix wasrununder thehotdesert sun.Fornearlyadec-ade it wasn’t a racemarked as one to look for-ward to and it almost always produced themost lacklustre racing of a season. But it would only take pushing back the

starting time a few hours and a few thousandfloodlights to ignite the Bahrain Grand Prixinto a spectacle of note. And in 2016 it deliv-ered once more.As if to emphasise its transformation the

drama started before a lap could be turned,in anger. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel wasforced into retirement on the formation lap. While Ferrari has stopped short of calling

it an engine failure, the plumes of smokepouring from the rear of the car say other-wise.In Australia it was Raikkonen who retired

with a turbo failure and there too Ferrariwent out of its way to assure that there is noreliability concern. But even though its only two races into the

season they’re developing a bit of an uncom-fortable and undesirable habit of only gettingone car to the chequered flag.Lewis Hamilton was sitting pretty in pole

position with teammate Nico Rosberg along-side on the front row of the grid, but it wasn’tto last very long for the Brit. Hamilton strug-gled to get off the line and ended up tanglingwith the Williams of Valtteri Bottas anddropped down to seventh. From fourth place Raikkonen made a poor

start and dropped behind a pair of fast start-ing Williams’ and the Red Bull of Daniel Ric-ciardo.However, the Finn followed with some te-

nacious overtaking got himself into secondplace. By this stage the leading Mercedes ofRosberg was already eleven seconds up theroad. The 2007 champion maintained a compara-

blepacewith theMercedesandevenmanagedto reduce the gap to three seconds throughstrategy and occasional superior pace. Butthe number 7 Ferrari was never close enoughto challenge for the lead of the race.As Hamilton recovered to third with some

damage to the right-side barge board Rosbergwrapped up his fifth win in a row.For years we’ve been calling for Rosberg to

step up his game andmake it a championshipbattle worth watching and he’s done it now. There is still an incredibly long season

ahead but Rosberg has started 2016 in thewaythat he’s needed to, in away that will giveHa-milton a lot to think about. With the top three positions established the

rest of the points paying positions was an in-tense fight right to the chequered flag. The availability of three tyre compounds

once again added a dynamism to the racingas drivers opted for strategies that ran thegamut of possibilities.Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth

thanks to an early stop and rolling the diceby running the final stint on the medium tyr-es.As the race strategy engineer for the Haas

F1 team Ruth Buscombe once again workeda brilliant strategy for Romain Grosjean. The Frenchman ranmost of the race on the

supersoft compound which allowed him toscythe through the field. He ran as high asfourth at one stage and ultimately finishedfourth in what is turning out to be a fairytaledebut for the American team.Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen finished

sixth ahead of Daniil Kvyat in seventh whorecovered from starting fifteenth on the grid. After a difficult tyre strategy Felipe Massa

and Valtteri Bottas finished eighth and ninthfor Williams. Driver of the day belongs to thefinal points scorer Stoffel Vandoorne. The 24-year-old Belgian driver stood in for

Fernando Alonso who is recovering fromfractured ribs sustained in the Australian Gpcrash. The difficulty of having to deal with the

complexity of a 2016 F1 car, to understand thePirelli tyres, and to fight with seasoned F1drivers, must not be underestimated. Van-doorne put all of his talents on display andblitzed his F1 debut. The 2016 season hasn’t begun to hit its

stride and already an immense battle is brew-ing up and down the field. Roll on China.

EXHILARATING track cycle racing contin-ued in full force on day one of the 2016 SouthAfrican Omnium Championships at theWest-bourne Oval on Saturday 2 April.

Port Elizabeth lived up to its reputation ofbeing the windy city with strong windsthroughout the day, which added to the chal-lenge for most of the riders on the track.

The exciting Omnium format of racing in-corporates the Olympic and CommonwealthGames track cycling disciplines – Scratch, In-dividual Pursuit, Elimination, Time Trial,Flying 250m and Points race. Each rider racesin each discipline, with the maximum pointsfor a win in each race being 40 points, then 38for second, then 36 for third. In addition, the Points race is calculated

slightly differently, with points being scoredevery 2000m, adding to the excitement of thecompetition and keeping everyone on theirtoes until the very end.

Saturday’s first day saw riders tackle theScratch, IndividualPursuit (IP) and theFlying

250m.In the Elite Men’s race, David Maree (Team

Telkom) currently leads after the three raceswith a total of 94 points, followed by team-mates ReynardButler (92) andNolanHoffman(88).Mareewon the Scratch race, came secondin the IP and 13th in the Flying 250m.The Elite Women’s race sees Charlene du

Preez leading the way on 118 points, followedby Elfriede Wolfaardt andMaroesjka Mattheeboth on 110 points. Du Preez opened her tallywith a second place in the Scratch race andfirst places in the IP and Flying 250m.As the sharp end of the sport exudes profes-

sionalism in their colourful team kit and top-of-the-range equipment at the highest level ofcompetition in the country, chasing pointsand championship titles, young riders fromthe townships watch and learn and aspire tobecome a big name in cycling with the correcttraining and guidance. While the Westbourne Oval has provided

much cycling entertainment over the courseof the week and has proved worthy of hostinga National Championship event, Port Eliza-beth in fact boasts three cycling tracks within

10 kilometres of each other.Cycling South Africa’s Transformation

and Development Commission Director, Ys-ter Xatasi, said: “I believe track cycling isgiving development riders opportunities tobe involved in cycling and to become top rid-ers. It’s nice for them to compete with thewell-known riders here. That way, they aregoing to improve their cycling.”

Xatasi has brought a team of four cyclistsfrom the Siyanqoba Club in the New Brigh-ton Township in the Eastern Cape with him.“The team I have brought is very excited

to race. One ofmy riders in theunder-16 cate-gory, Luthando Meintjies, is doing verywell,” he added.

Meintjies is 16-years-old and began cyclingat the age of 13 when he was in grade seven.“Cycling in a good sport. It makes me not

do the wrong things and I have made many, many friends in cycling. Cycling is my fu-ture. It makes me good,” Meintjies said.

Xatasi mentioned that often many of theriders cycle fromthe township to trainon theWestbourne Oval and then cycle back homelate in the evening.

“What’s crazy is that there is a track inthat area for them to train at but it isn’t ingreat condition. There has been an uncon-firmed amount of money to be allocated bythe Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality forthe maintenance and repair of the track. There has also been an offer by the Munici-pality to assist in the repair of the bicyclesthat are owned by Siyanqoba. With the re-pair of the bicycles and the track, theseyoung riders will have brilliant opportuni-ties topractice rightwhere they live,”Xatasisaid.

Cycling SA Track Commission DirectorandRaceDirector,GerhardMeyer, has beenin charge of training and selecting these rid-ers so that theyhave the opportunity to com-pete in the competitive environment.“I select some of the riders from Siyanqo-

ba and they come to the track for the Tues-day and Thursday training sessions and I

help them there. I’ve got about 15 developmentbikes that I work with. The riders come alongand we train. I look at the talent that’s aroundand then I take them onto personal training andtry to develop them from there,” Meyer said.President of Eastern Cape Sports Confedera-

tion, Mkhululi Magada, explained that theirmandate is to assist andmonitor Federations toensure that Transformation and Developmentis driven in the province.“Development is important. We are busywith

municipalities todevelopall of the facilities thatwe have, formal and informal. We need to makesure that we utilise what that we have in thebackyard in our communities. We don’t wantyoungsters to have to travel up to 12 kilometresbefore they can even participate.“We are committed to assist Federationswith

development in national and international par-ticipation. An academy is situated in NMMUwith sports scientists and dieticians and oncewehave spotted ayoungsterwith talent,we takethem there so we can prepare them for the four-year sporting cycle so that they are able to pro-duce medals for us.“Theway for the district, for the province and

for the country to evaluate itself from the othersis by the number of participants they can devel-op to gain medals. We want to make sure thatwe take these children at an early age and pre-pare them well so that they become a long-terminvestment for sport.”
