THE Ford Struandale Engine Planthas transformed the lives of 10 fami-lies from the Vastrap informal settle-ment in Booysen Park, Port Eliza-beth, with the installation of ship-
ping containers converted into safe and securehousing units.
Five containers were completely renovated,converted and subdivided to provide houses for
10 destitute families, the sick and the elderly. Asixth unit was also prepared as a multi-purposefacility for community meetings, classroom forthe children and a skills development centre.
The containers were installed in December,and gave the new residents a formal dwelling inthe so-called ‘Blue Village’.
This represented a life-changing upgradefrom the dilapidated make-shift shacks they pre-viously called home.
Apart from the housing units, the team fromthe Struandale Engine Plant also installed two
mobile toilets, providing essential ablutions inan area that has to make do without basic servi-ces such as sanitation. A handful of communaltaps service the thousands of people living in theinformal settlement.
The new containers joined the five existingunits that were installed in 2014 as part of Ford’sannual Global Week of Caring. This gave thefirst 10 families a safe, comfortable and weather-proof environment that guaranteed dramatical-ly improved living conditions - particularly inthe cold and wet winter months.
“We have had an incredible response and sup-port from around the world for the Vastrap con-tainer housing project that we started in 2014,and are delighted to launch this second phasethat makes it possible to accommodate and im-prove the living conditions of 20 families in to-tal,” said Hyron Muniz, Production Manager atthe Ford Struandale Engine Plant and theproject lead.

ments at the Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality was integral to theproject from the outset, providingthe land for this housing project,and co-ordinating the selectionprocess of the recipients in con-junction with local councillors,”Muniz said.The Ford team also extended
hugegratitude to freight company,Hamburg Süd, which donatedshipping containers for both pha-ses of this project, along with BLG
Logistics and MOL South Africathat each supplied two containersfor this new wing. Since its incep-tion, Freight Solutions has han-dled all the transport require-ments of the containers at no cost.It’s not just the big ticket items
that count, though, andaPortEliz-abeth charity, the Al-Fidaa’ Foun-dation, assisted by using materialsupplied by Ford tomake curtainsforall 10houses.Thecurtainswerecut, sewn and delivered within aremarkable 24-hour period.“On behalf of the community

A GROUP of irate Malabar residents are com-plaining about the Moregrove quarry road be-ing closed to the public.
Theseresidentsused todrive throughthepri-vate road that leads into theMoregrovequarry,which is owned by Lafarge, as a shortcut fromMalabar to their workplace and variousschools, especially in the Newton Park area.Rafeeq Moosagie, who used the quarry road
daily as a shortcut to work, has put together apetition signed by about 80 residents who livenear the Moregrove quarry and would like theroad to be opened to the public.“It is an absolute disgrace to have the quarry
closed to the public. It’s the quarry trucks thatmess up our roads and the least they can do isopen the roads to the public.“I used the (quarry) road every single day
during theweek. I live inMalabar,mybusinessis inNewtonPark andmychild goes toNewtonPark Pre-primary so it’s an inconvenience notto have that road open,” he said.Ibrahim Asmal, who is also angry about the
quarry road closure, said, “I think they shouldbe more considerate. I work in Newton Park; Ineed touse thequarryduring theweekbecauseit’s an inconvenience to drive right aroundSchauderville just to get to work,” he said.“Many years back, they gave out discs for
Malabar residents to use the quarry and that
was very convenient. I understand that it is aprivate road which is why I am willing to payto use that road,” he said.Imran Moosagie, who used to drive through
the quarry daily, said the quarry has beenclosed since last year.“I used the quarry to take my daughter from
our home in Malabar, to school at MoregrovePrimary. It was such an inconvenience to findan alternative road,” he said.He added that he wanted to use the quarry
road for safety reasons too. “Thequarry is saferthan going through Schauderville. I remembercoming from Schauderville towards Malabarand being caught in the crossfire of a shootingwith gangsters.”Lafarge Communications and Public Affairs
manager, Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, said the deci-sion to close the quarry road was taken follow-ing a series of road traffic violations whichposed a safety risk tomotorists. She added thatthe company would be held liable should therebe a serious accident on their roads.“The company noticed with concern the in-
creasingamountof incidentson theroadwhichresulted in a fewnearmisses including an acci-dent.Given that the companyprioritiseshealthand safety, we believe that the safety of ourmo-torists far outweighs the inconvenience thathas now been caused by the closure.”“The decision was taken at executive level
followingpriornotice to the roadusers,”Batya-she-Fillis said.

THEKingEdwardHotel isof-ficially open to the publicagain after being closed forfive years due to renova-tions.
The landmarkhotel,whichis more than 100 years old, issituated in Belmont Terracewith views of the Donkin Re-serve and harbour.The hotel’s financial man-
ager, Ilse Kleinhans, said thehotel’s historical look hasbeen retained. It has 104roomsandtherearealso fam-ily suites.Kleinhans said that al-
though they are a three-starhotel, they are planning to bea five-star hotel by the end of2016.
Four years ago, the hotelwas taken over by a familyfrom the United Arab Emir-ates and renovations tookplace.“The paperwork and reno-
vations took quite awhile be-cause it’s a historical build-ing,” said Kleinhans.
“The main areas that havebeen renovated include thesmall dining room, bed-rooms and the foyer area.Weare still busywithminor ren-ovations and touch-ups, “shesaid.
An interesting story aboutthe hotel is that it is believedto be haunted.“It is said an owner of the
building was murdered inroom 101. People say the hotel
is haunted and they can seehim in the room, but fortu-nately I don’t believe it,” she
said. To address safety con-cerns, Metro Security patrolsthe area.

This happened much to the surprise of Eu-geneWeitz, theCharlo residentwhohadbeenbattling sinceOctober for thewater and sani-tation department to attend to the leak be-tween Harold, Angela and Walter roads inCharlo.Weitz said he had spotted the water leak
on October 5 when he took his dogs for awalk, but thinking it had already been re-ported, he had taken no action.“On October 18 I noticed that the leak had
not been repaired and I immediately report-ed it to the municipality. On November 1, Ionce again reported the leak to the munici-
pality, but they refused to give me anotherreference number as I had already reportedit.”According to his estimates, the leak could
have caused a loss of water amounting toR66 500.Mettler said yesterday he had intervened
in the matter, but there had already been ameeting during which he had asked the met-ro’s executive management to lift the level ofservice delivery.“It was nice that everything fell into place
on the same day that the article about MrWeitz’s battle to have the leak repaired ap-peared in the newspaper,” he said.Weitz said he was very happy that the leak
had been repaired andhewanted to thank ev-erybody involved in getting themunicipalityto react eventually.“It is clear that the media involvement
brought about the immediate reaction,” hesaid.

FOURTEEN years ago a group ofmothers-to-be joined an antenatalclass to get some tips and advice onthe coming birth of their babiesand how to cope thereafter.
One of the most important thingsHelen Ward taught them at her an-tenatal class was that forming asupport group (or baby club) ofmothers was key.
The mothers (and fathers) start-ed getting together on a regular ba-sis and in this way a strong bondwas created between them, joiningeach other for birthday parties,Christmas parties and regular
mothers only coffee meets.In 2009 before going off to grade
1 most of the group came togetherfor a photo of the kids in their vari-ous school uniforms and they de-cided to do it again before the kidswent to high school.
Even though the group doesn’tmeet as often as they used to dueto their schedules becoming busi-er the older they get, it wasn’t toodifficult getting everybody togeth-er at the same venue as in 2009again.
One of those on the primaryschool photo has moved awaysince but the two who couldn’tmake it that day were there for theoccasion this time around.

“BIRDIES” from across the country will onceagain flock to Uitenhage at the beginning ofFebruary to attend the Swifts Rugby Club’sannual reunion and memorial service.
Last year’s event was a huge success withnearly 100 guests and some members travel-ling from as far as Cape Town and East Lon-don to attend.
According to one of the organisers, CecilHayward, they hope this year will be even amore jubilant gathering, as it is the 125th an-nual celebration of a sports club which not on-ly was the heart and soul of Uitenhage, but aone-of-a-kind when it comes to its rich histo-ry.
“Swifts is the only rugby club in South Afri-ca, which was founded by a Reverend andwhere many a professional rugby playerstarted his career,” said Hayward.
Reverend Charles Jecks of St Katharine’sAnglican Church in Market Street, Uiten-hage, during 1890 selected a team of young-sters from the church choir and entered themin a local rugby league. At first they wereknown as the St Katherine’s choir rugbyteam, but by 1891 it was officially named theSwifts Rugby and Football Club.

MORE than 500 participants from all over thecountry are expected to take part in one of SouthAfrica’s leading off-road triathlons, the Fed-health XTERRA, which will make its debut inNelson Mandela Bay this Friday, 29 until Sun-day, 31 January.
The full triathlon takes place on Saturdaycomprising a 1.5km ocean swim, 28km moun-tain bike and 12km trail run.
The triathlon will be held at Kings Beach andwill rely on the Kings Beach Surf LifesavingClub to ensure the water safety of all partici-pants over the weekend.
Paul Lynch, Vice Chairman of Kings BeachSurf Lifesaving Club, said that hosting the Fed-
health XTERRA, cements the Bay as a “fantasticcity for iconic events.”
“Our qualified lifesavers will be in the watermonitoring the competitors. We will also makeuse of boats as an additional safety option,”Lynch said.
Theeventprovidesadrenalinerushing funforthe whole family, with the Fedhealth XTERRAKids event taking place on Friday.
There will also be a Fedhealth XTERRA Litecomprising a 400m swim, 12km mountain bikeand 6km trail run for those who want to partici-pate in a less strenuous challenge.
Participants can enter individually or as partof a team of three, where one participant willswim, one will ride the mountain bike route andthe other will participate in the trail run.

azi Skefile, said the Bay is ideal for any sportsenthusiast and it is a privilege to become a hostcity for the Fedhealth XTERRA event that is rec-ognised as South Africa’s premier off-road tri-athlon.

Last year’s Fedhealth XTERRA winner, Stu-art Marais (30), who will be taking part in thisweek’s triathlon, said he is excited about theevent, especially since he is originally from Port
Elizabeth.Carla van Huyssteen (31) from Pietermaritz-
burg, who is one of the participants for the fulltriathlon, said she is looking forward to being inPort Elizabeth.

team has overcome its power unit deficien-cy. Honda, who struggled throughout the2015 season, is alleged to have solved theissues surrounding its energy recoverysystem.Some put the rumoured gains that have
been made by the Japanese manufacturerin the region in 223 horsepower.If it is the case the Honda engine should
be on par with that of Ferrari and Mer-cedes. However, it still doesn’t answer thequestion of the woeful reliability the teamendured throughout their 2015 campaign.As the first test of the season draws closer
you’d have to expect that rumours of suchsignificant gains will remain pure specula-tion until the team and its drivers can getout on track and prove it. If it is this casethen F1 is in for one cracking season.

THE 15th annual Metlife Mall/Die Burger“Love to Run” Valentine’s Road takes placeon Saturday, February 13, the day before Val-entine’s Day.
The race consists of a 10km road race anda 5km fun walk or run designed for the wholefamily.
The start and finish take place at MetlifeMall Shopping Centre opposite Makro in Ka-bega Park.
The 10km starts at 6am and the 5km at6:25am. The cost of the 10km is R40 for li-censed runners and for unlicensed runnersan additional R30 for a temporary licence isrequired.
The cost to participate in the 5km isR20 andno licence is required.
Participants can enter at leading sportsstores and at the Ladybugg at Metlife Mall, aswell as by using the entry forms published inDie Burger and PE Express.
The first 300 individuals who enter at theLadybugg at Metlife Mall will receive a freespecially designed T-shirt.
The t-shirts are handed out on a first comefirst served basis.
Entries close on Wednesday, February 10,but individuals are welcome to enter on Fri-day, February 12 between 5pm-7pm, in thecourtyard in front ofCheckers atMetlifeMall,as well as on the morning of the race from5am. No late fees will be charged.
