The basis of homemade toothpaste is baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.  Either one in huge doses can be dangerous, so DO NOT INGEST!

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a mild abrasive and has anti-bacterial properties.

Hydrogen peroxide helps by break down bacterial films with its foaming action.  I used a 3% solution, but anything you can find at a local drug store should be ok.

Vegetable-base glycerin liquid lends a nice consistency and sweetness, but is completely optional.   You should be able to find this at a drug store, or specialty foods shop, but I got mine online from a soap-supply store.

I definitely recommend using some kind of flavoring.  It's totally optional, but adding a drop of peppermint oil will leave your mouth feeling super fresh.  Tea tree oil boosts the anti-bacterial properties and tastes good.  A few drops of cinnamon oil (my favorite!) will definitely spice things up.  Food-grade grape or bubble gum flavor oil may entice your kids to brush more regularly - just be sure to supervise them and make sure they're not ingesting it!

Basic Ratio:

6 parts baking soda : 1 part vegetable based glycerin : 1 part hydrogen peroxide solution : flavor to taste

This makes a nice paste.  To make a smoother mix, reduce the soda.  To omit the glycerin, increase the peroxide.

Most commercial brands of toothpaste use chemicals and additives such as fluoride, saccharin and sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients may be toxic in large doses.

Most of the commercial mouth washes like Listerinecontain too much alcohol which dries out the mouth. It is not good. These products give information in a misleading way. For example, Listerine label says that 1ml contains 0.22ml of alcohol. How many can make out that Listerine contains 22 percent alcohol. Why it gives content for 1ml when the recommended amount of use is more than 10ml. If you use such a mouth wash before sleeping, then your mouth and throat will remain dry throughout the night, producingbad breath and other problems.

Given below are recipes for toothpastes and mouthwash that you can make at home. In the homemade toothpaste, you can add antiseptic, anti-inflammatory essential oils, such as tea tree or peppermint, along with mild abrasives like salt, clay and baking soda.

Tooth whitening damage & risk

Tooth whitening should be done by a qualified dentist. Some of the non-dentists who do this work use hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide (a chemical more commonly found in industrial cleaners) at a much higher concentration than is allowed by law, as high as 350 times stronger. Chlorine dioxide is highly acidic and can dissolve the tooth surface causing permanent damage. The most commonly observed side effects of professionally applied hydrogen peroxide products are temporary tooth sensitivity and occasional irritation of oral tissues. Note that tooth whitening damage of your teeth can be irreversible.
