Treasurer’s Report to the Congregation for 2015

prepared by Bill Menke, Treasurer, January 17, 2016

Dear Friends and Members of the Congregation:

Operating budget. We finished 2015 with a net loss of ($25,689.94). This amount can be broken down

into two parts, ($21,000.00) and ($4,689.94). The larger of these two amounts represents a prudent

decision by Session to use unrestricted funds and not the Manse Fund to defray $21,000.00 of Pastoral

Housing costs. Although we have the expectation that Manse Fund income will be able to provide

support for Pastor Housing in the long term, 2015 proved to be a poor year for investments and Session

deemed that selling off shares in the mutual fund that underpins the Manse Fund was unwise. The

smaller amount is the operating deficit less the ($21,000.00) charge and represents considerable effort

on the part of Session to hold down expenses. The attached Budget Report summarizes income and

expenses for 2015 and compares them to 2014. Income from pledges, gifts and plate were particularly

strong in 2015. On behalf of the Church, I thank our friends and members for their generosity. It enables

the continued life of our Congregation.

Restricted Funds. 2015 was an excellent year for our Memorial Fund, which received several major gifts

that increased its value from $18,500.96 to $105,475.06. On behalf of the Church, I thank the people

who made these gifts, for they will enable us to address important long term improvements, including

the re-roofing of the building, handicapped access and repair of the stained glass windows, all of which

would be difficult to fund out of our operating budget. Other restricted funds experienced a low-level of

routine activity in 2015.

New Worth. Our Net Worth increased from $788,883.12 to $843,643.10. Unrestricted funds decreased

by ($28,795.69), mainly due to the operating deficit1 while restricted funds grew by $80,419.27,

mainly due to Memorial Fund gifts. The attached Net Worth Report shows the value of the Church’s

assets and the balance of all our Restricted Funds.

Next Year’s Budget. The Session has approved a budget (attached) that projects a modest 1.01%

increase in operating expenses over the amount budgeted for 2015 and an equally modest (0.50%)

decrease in operating income. This budget trades off a somewhat larger (but still modest) increase of

2.25% for salaries with small decreases in some other categories that reflect various sorts of

economizing. The budget is very conservative on projected income, but it does include a $21,000

contribution from the Manse Fund. An operating deficit of ($14,666.73) is projected for 2016.

Sincerely,

Bill Menke

Treasurer

___

1The decrease in unrestricted funds is ($3,105.75) larger than the operating deficit because

some operating expenses were carried forward from 2014.

Stewardship Committee Annual Report

2015

The Stewardship Committee: Angela Maddalone - Lois Collura - Richard Hansen

William Menke - Stephen van Dyk - (Beverly Warwick asked to be excused from

the committee due to personal commitments) - Nina Von Eckardt chair)

The stewardship Committee met for the first time in June to discuss and plan

the 2015 Stewardship Campaign. We determined Nina and Bill would each

give Minute for Stewardship Pledging Testimonies, and Nina would ask Helen

Shay if she would do so as well.

Nina also asked Carol Knudson if she would write the Christmas Community

Appeal letter.

The committee discussed various ideas for the Fall Stewardship drive..

And set dates and deadlines

Pledge letters would go out around October 13th.

The Christmas letter would go out early December.

The Planned Giving Brochure would be included in all the pledge letters.

The Christmas Community Appeal Letter would highlight an appeal for funds to

repair the Stained Glass Windows. The committee discussed the idea that

people are more apt to donate for a specific cause. And in this case, there was

the added appeal of protecting the Historical Heritage of the Community!

Because of the nature of the Community Christmas Letter, Nina asked Session

to vote to allow the Christmas Community Letter to go out to the entire Pledge

list as well. The rationale being that a number of people on the Pledge list do

not always pledge, but they might be inclined to make a one-time special

donation to a worthy cause!

It was decided that The Stewardship and the Worship Committees would come

together to jointly produce an Agape Love Feast Breakfast Service. The idea

was to THANK the congregation for their generosity and hard work . WE

thought long and hard, for a way to say "THANK YOU" to the Congregation for

the many gifts of time and love, all the for yearly pledges, and for all the work

our Congregation does to make our church the loving, caring, sharing family

that people say they experience when they come through our doors.

Page 6: Palisades Presbyterian Church Palisades, New Yorkpalpresny.org/documents/2015AnnualReport-updated.pdfPalisades Presbyterian Church Palisades, New York Annual Meeting of the Congregation

The Congregation would not be asked to do a potluck, but the officers of the

church (Elders, Deacons, Stewardship and Worship committee members) would

work together to create a special occasion of Prayer and Thanks and Fellowship

and love....

The Agape Love Feast Brunch took place Sunday November 22 just before

Thanksgiving, in the Parish House at 10 am.

There was a sign on the church door letting anyone who might drop by the

church that morning know the Special Service-Brunch was being held in the

Parish Hall and that ALL Are Welcome. We had ONE person attend, who is not a

regular. The usher showed her to the Parish Hall and she stayed for the service!

We had 53 confirmed RSVPs....but the U-Shaped table formation was set for 60

people just in case we had any un-announced attendees. And we did! We had

9 people come who did not RSVP, but we also had a few people who were

unable to attend at the last minute, so in the end, with a bit of

shuffling......everyone was seated!!!

After the Pizza/movie Saturday evening, parents and kids stayed and helped set

up the tables. Early Sunday morning, the Deacons, members of Session and

both committees involved, (Stewardship and Worship), all worked very hard to

set up and serve a delicious Brunch.

Michael played beautiful Prelude music on the piano which was moved into the

room, which sounded particularly wonderful on the wooden floor! We were able

to begin the service around 10:10 once everyone was seated. We had a slightly

streamlined Service of Hymns and prayers and readings before we began the

meal. As we had hoped, a number of famlies attended with their children. The

room was filled with sun light and as someone wrote me afterwards, you could

feel the Spirit of Agape fill the Parish House. It was a lovely Service and brunch!

Carol Knudson wrote a wonderful Community Christmas letter. Nina produced

the Stained Glass Window insert and the mailing, which Session agreed should

be sent to both the Community Christmas list AND the Church Pledge list,

(around 188 people), went out Tuesday 12/8.

I do not as yet know what the result of the 2016 Pledge Campaign amounts to.

I do know that so far....as of 1.12.16 the Christmas Community Stained Glass

Window Appeal has brought in over $9,000.....

Page 7: Palisades Presbyterian Church Palisades, New Yorkpalpresny.org/documents/2015AnnualReport-updated.pdfPalisades Presbyterian Church Palisades, New York Annual Meeting of the Congregation

I want to thank ALL the people who gave so generously of their time and their

talents to make this year such a wonderful success....

All the Members of the Stewardship and Worship Committees, the Deacons

especially who added their culinary talents to the Brunch and the Session who

willingly joined in the Agape Thanksgiving Love Feast....and the entire

Congregation who showed up to worship and eat....

Bless you ALL....

Operations Year End Report 2015

Personalized Landscaping All the grounds around the church during the summer and winter are maintained by Personalized

Landscaping. Richard Rasmussen as a donation, included plowing and shoveling services for 2015.

Ehrlich Pest Control

The termite monitors have been updated and baited. We are on a quarterly schedule. Several wasp

nests were removed during the summer.

Major Projects Roof The Parish House cedar shake roof on the north side requires replacement. This project will be delayed until the spring when weather conditions improve. The cost for the cedar shakes roof will be, $14,750.00 Stained Glass Windows. The One Hundred Fiftieth Anniversary Committee Chairman, Stephen Van Dyk has a proposal to restore the stained glass windows in the sanctuary. The lead is deteriorating causing the glass to buckle, operations support’s this project. Building Concerns Major items to monitor. Replace the Fire alarm system; $2,000.00 Sanctuary gas hot air furnace. The thirty-year-old rusty sanctuary furnace failed to heat on October 3rd. A new furnace was installed October 6th up and running October 7th. $3,000.00 Berry Burners was the contractor. Previously they also installed the Parish House and Office Heating systems.

Dead tree removal Lincoln Colwell, Arborist, cut down and removed a large dead tree on the west side of the building. He also removed leaning trees and vines including Poison Ivy on the east side. The total cost was; $400.00

Orangetown Biannual Fire Inspection. Our fire alarm system, fire extinguishers, and emergency exit lighting were inspected. SafeNet Security solutions is our new provider, they maintain and test our system quarterly. We will have to upgrade the Fire Alarm control unit in the near future. State Line Fire & Safety recertified our seven fire extinguishers. Cleaning Services Emelina Zayas has been cleaning our Sanctuary and Parish House faithfully since 2009. She is very dedicated, works five hours every Monday and does a wonderful job.

Handy-cap access We purchased a portable EZ-Ramp to be used for the six-inch step in the sanctuary in front of the alter. This provides wheelchair access from the west side ramp into the sanctuary. Sanctuary front interior door. Bob & Bigelow replaced a very large broken hinge. The door, frame & floor had expanded over the years requiring the refitting of the door inside the frame. The upper & power latches that secure the door in place was frozen. The door now closes & latches in place. SPRING & FALL CLEAN-UPS Bigelow coordinated the work parties. Suggested tasks were considered. Nina created a sign-up sheet that was in the Parish House. Our youngsters volunteered and were assigned appropriate jobs. The idea is to keep them involved with church life. Berenice Albright & Helen Shay were instrumental at organizing the youth project. Coffee and refreshments were available. Flowers Kim & Beatrice planted flowers in flower pots located around the Sanctuary & Parish House. This is the first time we did this and it added a welcoming feeling for us and visitors to enjoy. Vegetable garden Lori Hylton with the help of our youngsters planted a vegetable garden for the first time in the rear yard. Parish House Use Activities scheduled throughout the year: CST, AA, Tai-Kwon-Do, Bible Study, Choir practice, Palisagers, Strawberry Festival, Pancake Breakfast, Weddings & Memorial Services. Pancake Breakfast The entire crew was there again to make this event a success. Many PPC members and community members support this event and have an enjoyable time socializing at the breakfast. The profit was $425.00, that is slightly more than the last two years. Children’s Shakespeare Theatre In recent years we have come to expect an annual income from CST of $8,000.00 based on a total of four performances @ $2,000.00 per performance. CST submitted their rehearsal and performance schedule for their coming season requesting approximately the same number of rehearsal hours but only two performances at the church expecting to pay the church a total of $4,000.00 for the season. A new schedule for payment has been agreed to and they are paying $1,000.00 per month starting on October 1, 2015 thru April 1, 2016 for a total of $7,000.00 and this agreement would be for the current season only. Thank you to the operations committee and all PPC members who assisted with the daily building maintenance concerns during my five-year term. Respectfully submitted: Robert Rasmussen, Chair Operations Committee Members: Marjorie Douglas, Bigelow Green, Fred Griffing, John Guzewich, Richard Hansen, Sue Webb and John Cuccia.

2015 Year end Personnel Report

The members of the Personnel Committee were: Maria Gagliardi, Susan Orlando, Angela

Maddalone , John Guzewich and Rosemary Coslit, Chair. This was a great group to work

with. Thank you all!

In 2015, Personnel revamped the Staff Evaluation Form that had been used in previous

years: this was done to improve the number of responses, as well as the quality of the

response. The questions were changed, and different questions were asked of each of our

4 employees: Michael Shapiro, Emelina Zayas, Jackie Johanson, and Angela Maddalone.

Both online and paper Evaluations were created, as well as announcements in Church and

Pal Pres to make all aware of the process. Session and Deacons completed the Evaluation

Form during regular meetings. There were 31 Evaluations completed in total, which we

consider to be a large number. We felt the Forms yielded good feedback, which was shared

with staff in the year end reviews.

Other work of Personnel in 2015:

-On the recommendation of Personnel , Session voted that the Church School Intern

position, if used, would only be given to a student.

-Emelina Zayas, our Sexton, asked to be on our books so Social Security can be taken out

of her paycheck. Personnel reviewed the request, and its ramifications, and recommended

to Session to approve the request , which was done.

Work to be completed going forward:

-Finalize a Personnel Policy that covers sick pay and vacation guidelines.

-Finalize staff Job descriptions using a consistent template.

Worship Committee 2015 Annual Report

2015 has been an eventful year in the worship life of our church. In this report, I will summarize some of the highlights. First I want to thank our choir, who give of their time and talent throughout the year, practicing every Thursday night, leading worship every Sunday, studying and working on new music. I cannot tell you how much you mean to me and to this church. Second, I want to thank the committee, Johanna Lo, Cass Ludington, Sue Orlando Jennifer Shapiro, Henry Shaw, Stephen Van Dyk, Nina Von Eckardt, Kim Wekerle and of course, Rev. Maddalone. I am grateful for your time, your ideas, and your thoughtfulness. Although we offered two Ash Wednesday services again this year, for the second time in a row, no one attended the noon service. As a result, the committee has decided that in 2016, we will hold only one service on Ash Wednesday, at 8 PM. As a result of our discussion, it has been decided to have the choir participate in that service to lead the singing. We hosted the joint Maundy Thursday service with St. Charles AME Zion in 2015. The event was very successful, well attended by both congregations. As usual, the potluck supper was delicious. The Easter Sunrise Service at Cass and Nick Ludington’s lovely home on the Hudson was especially beautiful this year. The weather was perfectly clear and more people came than ever before in my memory. The 10 AM service was also very well attended. As has been the custom in the past, the choir had the summer off. However, in 2015 several members volunteered to sing solos at various services during July and August. I want to give a special thank-you to Sue Orlando, Jennifer Shapiro and Nina Von Eckardt. One of the most successful and popular worship events of the year was the Agape Service, held on November 22nd. This was a joint project with The Stewardship Committee, and of course, most of the credit for its planning and execution goes to Nina Von Eckardt and her committee as well as to the Board of Deacons, for their huge contribution of time and food for the event. Held in the Parish House, and attended by fifty-six people, it was truly a Love Feast for us all. Christmas Eve featured two services again this year, at 5:30 and 11:00. Special thanks to Bob and Beatrice Rasmussen and to all those who helped them to decorate the sanctuary and make it so very beautiful. And of course, we are so grateful to Ernie Quick who has again made a gift of all the greens. Respectfully submitted, Michael Shapiro, Chair

Board of Deacons - Palisades Presbyterian Church

Annual Report 2015

The Board of Deacons during 2015 was composed of 9 members as follows: Berenice Albright, Marlene Barba, Fred

Griffing, Richard Hansen, Jim Rubenstone, Suzanne Shaw, Helen Shay, Denise Cae Tilbens, and Stephen Van Dyk.

Helen Shay served as Moderator, and Berenice Albright as Secretary. Fred Griffing resigned half-way through the

year however, the Deacons made that a smooth transition for all.

As part of their ministry of service, the Deacons’ primary activities included preparing Coffee Hour after Services

each Sunday, maintaining the Church kitchen including cleanup and purchase of supplies, distributing flowers at

Christmas and Easter, organizing rides to Church for those in need, organizing the prayer chain, and providing food,

as needed, to homebound members of the congregation. The Deacons also wrote to those mentioned during Joys

and Concerns in the Sunday service, and to others who may be in need of comfort. In addition, the Deacons

organized and ran the annual Strawberry Festival and assisted at 3 memorial services this year.

As always, Coffee Hour continued to be an enjoyable and rewarding time for fellowship each Sunday after the service.

During 2015, efforts continued to minimize the use of disposable cups, plates, and utensils, and to provide a variety

of tasty and healthy foods. Coffee Hour also continues to use Fair Trade coffee, in the interest in promoting

environmental and economic justice. Members of the congregation also continued to contribute snacks and treats

to Coffee Hour, a practice much appreciated and welcomed by the Deacons. As requested by members of the

congregation, rice crackers have been added as a gluten-free alternative for communion.

Lilies were distributed at Easter, and poinsettias at Christmas, to more than 14 members and friends at each holiday.

Rides were provided to members as needed. Richard Hansen was the primary provider of Joys-and-Concerns notes

during the year, averaging two to three notes each week. His efforts are much appreciated and repeatedly

acknowledged by recipients during the year.

The annual Strawberry Festival was held on Saturday, June 13. The event was very well attended, and provided

great fellowship for the congregation and community, as well as raising funds for the Church. The continued success

of the Strawberry Festival tradition comes directly from the endless enthusiasm and hard work by the Deacons and

the many volunteers from the Church family.

The Deacons also assisted at the receptions following the memorial services for the Pellegrini Family on February

18, Phoebe Hsia Family on October 17 and the Garland Family on November 7.

Respectfully submitted,

Helen Shay
