Also, our community recently received a perfect state survey by the Texas Assisted Living regulatory agency. Way to go Team!!! And lastly, there is a season for everything. Each season brings an end and therefore a new beginning. I would like to share a heartfelt goodbye to Mr. Bradley Howell, Executive Director in training. As we close out 6 wonderful months with Bradley in our community, I thank him for his diligence and dedication to Belmont Village Turtle Creek. Bradley’s new beginning will be in California as the Assistant Executive Director for our Albany Community. We wish Bradley and his family great success ahead! “I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June.” -L.M. Montgomery, Anne of the Island

Meet Deanna Galarza! My name is Deanna Galarza

and I am the new WellnessCoordinator for RehabCare, hereat Belmont Village Turtle Creek. Ihave been working here a littleover a month now, and it hasbeen a great pleasure getting toknow you. I graduated from theUniversity of Texas at Arlington inDecember 2016, where I receivedmy Bachelor’s Degree of Science inKinesiology. I’ve always wanted topursue a career that consisted ofme being able to help othersimprove their physical health. While completing myundergraduate prerequisites, Itook on an internship at a fitnesscenter for senior citizens calledHeart at Work. At Heart at Work,my job was to create a workoutplan that would suit an individualwho had just recently beendischarged from physical therapy. These individuals would then be

referred to us to continue awellness training program thatcould help them continue toimprove their ability to carry onwith daily activities. I completedmy internship there and thencontinued to volunteer with themwhen I could. During my time atHeart at Work, I realized that thiswas exactly what I was seeking todo with my degree! I decided thatI wanted to continue to dowellness training because I feltpassionate about working withpeople and creating workoutplans that would physicallybenefit them. I discovered that mypassion is working with thegeriatric population, and doing allI can, through personal training,to help them stay physicallyactive. I love being able to helpothers feel great throughexercising. I look forward togetting to know each residentindividually, and creating awonderful bond with thiscommunity!

Legumes May Lower Type2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is growing byleaps and bounds throughout theworld. A recent study by the Unitof Human Nutrition at TheUniversistat Rovira VirgiliTerragona, Spain discovered that a

diet high in legumes significantlyreduces the risk of developingthe disease.

Legumes consist of plants suchas alfalfa, clover, peas, peanuts, soybeans, chickpeas, and varioustypes of beans. As a group they arevery nutritious because they havehigh levels of vitamin B, whichhelps the body regulatemetabolism and make energy. They are also high in potassium, magnesium and fiber. They arewhat are known to be lowglycemic. This means blood sugarlevels increase slowly after they areconsumed, unlike bread or cornwhich are high glycemic, whichincrease your blood sugar rapidlyafter consumption.

Legumes also comprise avariety of phytochemicals whichprotect the blood vessels againstinflammation.

The study that took place over 4years revealed that individualswho ate legumes 3.35 servings aweek had a 35% less likely chanceof developing Diabetes type 2.Lentils had the strongestassociation with low risk type 2diabetes. Just replacing half a dailyserving of protein- andcarbohydrate rich foods (bread, potatoes, and rice) with anequivalent serving of legumesreduced the risk of diabetes.
