THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE OF TURTLE CREEK OCTOBER 2017 Corner Director’s October ushers in a change of season and with this change of season comes a sense of anticipation for all the events for the FALL. Belmont Turtle Creek loves a good party! We have a Halloween Party planned for residents and employees. We can’t wait for the Costume Contest! I hear this year will be a real “Thriller!!” And as always, little ones are welcome to join us for trick-or-treating. This year we will also have a Fall Family Festival. Look for those dates and invite your family. We will have music by The Dallas Banjo Band and lots of fall fun. Please invite your families! We have been raising funds for the Dallas Alzheimer’s Association and have put together a fantastic team for the Annual Walk To End Alzheimer’s on October 7th. Even if you can’t walk the day of, you can always donate and join the team. Please see Aubrey for sign-up details. Thank you to those who took part in the 9/11 Remembrance Lunch last month. We have started a new tradition at Belmont Turtle Creek. House 11 was thrilled to meet you all and enjoyed the BBQ meal. We will also work with our Dallas Fire Department in the coming months to collect toys for Christmas to be distributed by our local DFD. Look for details to come. We are still collecting funds through www.youcaring.com/BVCares for the Belmont employees impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Remember that each dollar donated will be matched by Belmont. I want to thank all those who have donated to the fund. Your generosity is deeply appreciated. Please make a note, as we enter into the fast past fall season, to make reservations for the events noted on the calendar for RSVPs. We want to prepare our best for you and your guests. NOVEL WAY TOBENEFIT YOURBRAIN

If you find yourself lost in agood book and getting caughtup in its characters, you are notonly entertaining yourself, butalso exercising your brain.Scientific studies have shownthat reading fiction appears toaffect sensory and motorpathways, as well as thelanguage area of the brain.Researchers say MRI resultsrevealed enhanced brainconnectivity and functionbecause readers visualize theactions and emotions of astory’s characters and putthemselves in their shoes.

DRAW BRAINBENEFITS FROMDOODLING

Once thought to be apointless distraction, doodling isan activity that can improvecognitive function, sayresearchers. There’s evidence

that penning aimless scribblesand sketches helps the brainprocess information and stayfocused. Several studies haveshown that doodlers rememberdata better than non-doodlers.Along with being a calmingcognitive tool, doodling—andsimilarly, freehand drawing—canalso be used to enhancephysical relaxation.

DIABETES ANDALZHEIMER’SDISEASE

As scientists work to unravelthe mystery of what reallycauses Alzheimer’s disease, onefactor that continues to comeup is diabetes—specifically type2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a conditionwhere the body either becomesless able to use insulin orproduces too little insulin (or acombination of both), causing itto be less able to process sugarand turn it into energy.

Type 2 diabetes has typicallybeen considered an adultdisease, although there are morechildren and teenagersdeveloping diabetes now, likelydue to the higher levels ofobesity and sedentary lifestyles.

Type 2 diabetes has ahereditary component, meaningthat if you have family memberswith the disease, you are morelikely to develop it.

Several other factors increaseyour chances of developing type2 diabetes, including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, small or largebirth weight and stress.

Research has found that, onaverage, people with diabetesare more likely to demonstrateslower processing speeds andimpaired executive functioningskills, even without a diagnosisof dementia.

People with type 2 diabetesare significantly more likely to

develop Alzheimer’s disease andother types of dementia.Research has found that 50% ofthose with type 2 diabetes willgo on to develop dementia.

In one study involving 553participants, twice as manypeople with type 2 diabetesdeveloped dementia (includingAlzheimer’s disease and vasculardementia) as compared to thosewithout diabetes.

At this time, researchers don’tbelieve type 2 diabetes is thesole cause of Alzheimer’s butrather that it increases the riskof dementia developing.

An article in the journalNeurology outlined researchthat demonstrated a correlationbetween higher levels of glucosein the body and lower levels ofcognitive functioning. None ofthe 141 participants haddiabetes. But those with chronichigher blood sugar levelsperformed more poorly oncognitive testing and alsoshowed decreases in the sizeand structural changes in thehippocampal area of the brain.

Research has shown thatpeople with well-controlledblood sugar levels can slow oreven prevent cognitive decline, despite the presence ofdiabetes. Some medications forthe treatment of diabetes havedemonstrated effectiveness inproviding good control ofglucose levels as well asimproved cognition in thosewith diabetes.
