First, it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There is a misconception that breast cancer can only affect women, which is untrue. Many people are aware of breast cancer but many forget to take the necessary steps to plan ahead and get checked regularly to detect the disease during the early stages. I encourage everyone, no matter what age you are, to plan ahead and make sure you visit your physician. Men, as well as women, should also take the initiative to get checked. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day. On this day, and throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. This year, National Mammography Day will be celebrated on Oct. 16. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, on this day, we are asking everyone to wear any shade of pink to recognize those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, the survivors, and the ongoing efforts to bring awareness to this disease. Secondly, October is the month of the annual Alzheimer’s walk. Every year Belmont Village communities across the country take part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease is growing each year and continues to be the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. I invite you all to join our Belmont Village of Sunnyvale team on Saturday, Oct. 10. For more information, please contact Kathy Nguyen, Memory Programs Coordinator. Second Neighborhood Construction is underway! I am excited for the opening of our second Neighborhood in the upcoming months. I continue to thank each resident and family involved in this process as well as the cooperation of all residents who are experiencing this conversion. It truly takes a “village” as great as ours to have such a successful transition. Have a great month! Radhika Singh Executive Director

Help support the cause, if notfor those millions of peopleaffected by this disease, then do itfor your parents so they can stillenjoy precious moments withyour grandchildren; for yourpartner, so he/she can continuesharing in life’s joys with you; foryour children, so they cancontinue to glean from you yourwisdom and guidance; for yourfriends, so they can continue tolive full and rewarding lives; foryour siblings, so they can continueto laugh, be silly, and act wild

with you even into old age.

Fitness CornerPreparing for a Fall: Role of

Muscular Strength &Endurance

Osteoporosis is often considereda silent disease until after a

fracture that might be the resultof a fall. Exercise helps promote

muscular strength and mass, along with effectively increasingbone mass and bone strength.

But to increase the strength andmass of bones, the bones must

be put under stress or used. Thus, ACSM reported that

muscular strengthening exercisesmay serve as “valuable measures

to prevent, slow – or evenreverse – the loss of bone mass

in people with osteoporosisRecommendations for older,

very deconditioned, or frailindividuals starting a resistancetraining program:

• Begin with lower resistancebetween 40%-50% of a 1-repetition max

• Very light - light intensity.• Repetitions: higher and in

the range of 10-20repetitions/set.

As a result of muscularstrengthening exercises, bonedensity remains high and lessprobability of fractures. So it’simportant to continueperforming strengtheningexercises and beginimplementing power workout toprevent falls.

Older adults with cancer havespecial needs and require expertcare. Geriatric Oncologists providecomprehensive cancer care topatients over 70. To determine themost appropriate treatment planfor patients, ComprehensiveGeriatric Assessment (CGA) hasbeen developed in order to ensurea detailed view of an older adultsoverall condition, focusing onfunctional status and quality oflife. Using the CGA allowsphysicians to create an individualtreatment plan tailoring care toeach patient. In addition (CGA)can help your physicianemphasize that advanced agealone should not prevent the useof effective cancer treatment thatmay improve quality of life.
