"Who of you will help the poor amongst us?"

You did !!! Nearly two years ago, this question was posed to our St. Edward the Confessor parishioners. At that time, the parish entered into a partner-

ship with Family Assistance Ministries (FAM), in San Clemente as a pilot program. In doing so, FAM established a satellite operation at the San Felipe chapel to better serve the poor of our community. More than 20 parishioners answered the call to volunteer. They volunteered one or two Fridays a month from 10 AM to 1PM. The program has been an unquestionable success. It is helping the poor and homeless by having access to food, clothing, plus case management services such as shelter and job training. Those parishioners who have volunteered have seen lives changed. They came to know people who have been living on the streets for years receive help and turn their lives around. They have also witnessed families with young children, on the verge of being homeless, receive guidance to get back on their feet and become independent. The program’s success means we are going forward to make this a permanent ministry of our parish. Therefore, we are seeking two couples to serve as leads one or two days a month on Fridays. We are also in need for additional volunteers to help distribute food and gather information to provide to case-workers. If this is something you would like to be a part of or want more information, please call, Cindy Brauer 949.439.0809 or contact Deacon Al Scaduto at [email protected]

MONARCH NEWS This year’s theme of Use Your Gifts to Transform the World is nowhere more evident than with our ongoing schoolwide Service Projects. True to our Catholic faith and our Parish’s mission to be a House of Prayer, House of the Poor, our learners and school fam-ilies have the opportunity to participate in stewardship projects throughout the year, bene-fitting various local and national causes or organizations. In October, our second graders spearheaded the annual Jeans for Jesus campaign. For a $5 donation, learners and staff were allowed to wear jeans every Wednesday throughout Octo-ber. The Jeans of Jesus appeal raised more than $1,300 and all proceeds were donated to the Diocesan Hurricane Relief Fund. Another annual school campaign in October is our Pennies from Heaven baby bottle cam-paign to support Respect Life Month. Learners fill baby bottles with loose change and money, with many even donating their own allowance. This year, more than $6,400 was given to Re-spect Life Ministries. During November, our third grade class coordinated a Thanksgiving food drive. Earlier in the year, they visited Serra’s Pantry at the Mission Basilica as part of their third grade pilgrimage. All food collected was delivered to Serra’s Pantry and Family Assistance Ministries in time for their Thanksgiving distribution to local families in need. We are proud of all of our Monarchs who serve, give, pray and reflect as they strive to make a difference in the lives of others.

Parish Ministries

Needed: Ministers to Take Communion to the Sick and Homebound

We need registered parishioners who are willing to take Holy Communion to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass due to age or illness. In bringing Holy Communion to the sick or aged, you minister to the whole person - body, mind and soul. The time com-mitment is approximately two hours per week, either during the week or on the weekend.

Altar Guild Volunteers Needed! Altar Guild volunteers perform light housekeeping duties for the Church, such as washing the Holy vessels used in the Mass and tidying up the pews. The time commitment is one hour once a month: either on Monday or Friday. If you can help our faith com-munity in this way, please contact Gabrielle Kirkman [email protected] or (949) 683-1567.

Ushers Needed for Masses at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and

Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Please prayerfully consider serving as an usher at the weekend Mass you normally attend. Ushers welcome and help seat parishioners, collect and present the gifts, open doors, distribute bulletins, and provide as-sistance when needed. If you are willing to serve or have questions, please contact

Maria Whelan (949) 233-8288 [email protected]

Inviting Married Couples Thursday, December 7 @ 7:30 p.m.

We meet at 7:30 PM in St. Edward’s School, 2nd floor Parish Room, Room 219. Come join us! For more information, call Bob and Mary Dausch at 481-1102.

Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will meet with you one-to-one to listen, encourage, and pray with and for you. It's free and it’s confidential. Please contact Sharon at (949) 599-8682 or email [email protected].

St. Matthew’s Financial Corner Former Tax Collector & Patron Saint of ‘Money’

Feast Day Sept 21st

Turn Your TAXABLE RMD (Required Min-imum Distributions) into Charitable Dona-tions.

IRS rules mandate that individuals age 70 1/2 and older take RMDs from their IRA each year, regardless of whether the income is needed. These annual withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes. By making a charitable contri-bution from your IRA, you can satisfy your RMD amount without report-ing additional income.

This provision may be especially attractive for retirees who don’t need all the income from their IRA to meet current living expenses. By donating the money to your charity, you can enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to a worthy cause while effectively lowering your tax bill.
