October is Respect Life Month As Catholics we proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God; that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self, and others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, must protect and nurture human life at every stage of its existence. These beliefs flow from ordinary reason and from our faith's constant witness that "life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception" (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, no. 51)—a teaching that has been a constant part of the Christian message since the apostolic age.
Please support Pennies From Heaven You can support life by donating to our diocesan Pennies from Heaven program. Simply take a baby bottle this weekend and return it next weekend filled with your donation.
Today Sunday, October 7th, is our Diocese's 24th annual Pennies from Heaven Campaign. Please consider donating your coins and dollars to support local Respect Life shelters, clinics, and centers that give immediate and long-term care to Orange County women, men, and families in crisis. This year donations will support: Obria Medical Clinics (Mission Viejo, Santa Ana, Orange & Mobile Unit), Mary's Path Casa Teresa Vietnamese hotline Life Centers (Santa Ana and La Habra) Precious Life Shelter and Horizon Pregnancy Clinic Last year $265,447 was raised in the Diocese thanks to your efforts. Visit www.rcbo.org/penniesfromheaven to learn more about Pennies from Heaven or to donate electronically. Please join with the other parishes throughout the Diocese and donate today!
40 Days for Life Celebrated a New Life!
Sunday, September 23 our local 40 Days for Life team hosted a Baby Shower for Daisy and Adam who chose LIFE for their baby girl during last spring 40 Days for Life! Daisy was very grateful and felt the love of God and the community. She thanks everyone who participated in the campaign praying and fast-ing for an end to abortion, especially the people who volunteer to pray outside the Planned Parenthood abortion facility who helped her to choose life. In the photo Father Alan Benander is giving a blessing to Daisy at the baby shower. Father Alan was at Planned Parenthood that rainy Saturday in March and together with a 40 Days for life participant counseled the couple. Baby's due date is October 24! So far we know of 31 babies saved from abortion globally during this fall's 40 Days for life campaign that started on Sept 23. St. Edwards Respect Life Ministry invites you to join the prayer vigil Friday mornings 9:30-10:30am outside the Planned Parenthood located at 700 S Tustin, Orange. Text or call Ale Baker if you want to join 949 690 7315. www.40DaysforLife.com

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities
A Campaign in Support of Life
As pastors and teachers, we proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God; that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self, and others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, must protect and nurture human life at every stage of its existence. These beliefs flow from ordinary reason and from our faith's constant witness that "life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception" (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, no. 51)—a teaching that has been a constant part of the Christian message since the apostolic age. A Consistent Ethic of Life A wide spectrum of issues touches on the protection of human life and the promotion of human dignity. As Pope John Paul II has reminded us: "Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly consistent. It cannot tolerate bias and discrimination, for human life is sacred and inviolable at every stage and in every situation; it is an indivisible good" (The Gospel of Life, no. 87). Among important issues involving the dignity of human life with which the Church is concerned, abortion necessarily plays a central role. Abortion, the direct killing of an innocent human being, is always gravely immoral (The Gospel of Life, no. 57); its victims are the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family. It is imperative that those who are called to serve the least among us give urgent attention and priority to this issue of justice. This focus and the Church's commitment to a consistent ethic of life complement one another. A consistent ethic of life, which explains the Church's teaching at the level of moral principle—far from diminishing concern for abortion and euthanasia or equating all issues touching on the dignity of human life—recognizes instead the distinctive character of each issue while giving each its proper place within a coherent moral vision. As bishops of the United States we have issued pastoral letters on war and peace, economic justice, and other social questions affecting the dignity of human life— and we have implemented programs for advancing the Church's witness in these areas through parishes, schools, and other Church institutions (e.g., Communities of Salt and Light [1994]; Sharing Catholic Social Teaching [1998]). Taken together, these diverse pastoral statements and practical programs constitute no mere assortment of unrelated initiatives but rather a consistent strategy in support of all human life in its various stages and circumstances. To focus on the evil of deliberate killing in abortion and euthanasia is not to ignore the many other urgent conditions that demean human dignity and threaten human rights. Opposing abortion and euthanasia "does not excuse indifference to those who suffer from poverty, violence, and injustice. Any politics of human life must work to resist the violence of war and the scandal of capital punishment. Any politics of human dignity must seriously address issues of racism, poverty, hunger, employment, education, housing and healthcare" (Living the Gospel of Life, no. 23). We pray that Catholics will be advocates for the weak and the marginalized in all these areas. "But being 'right' in such matters can never excuse a wrong choice regarding direct attacks on innocent human life. Indeed, the failure to protect and defend life in its most vulnerable stages renders suspect any claims to the 'rightness' of positions in other matters affecting the poorest and least powerful of the human community" (Living the Gospel of Life, no. 23). --- Each weekend during the month of October, the Beacon and bulletin will focus on different areas of life which we are called to protect, love, and serve. Please read each article so that you too may be an ambassador for life in this culture of death. “You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:14). Prayerfully,
Rev. Brendan Manson Pastor

Ushers Needed for Weekend Masses Ushers provide hospitality, comfort, and safety at Sunday masses and other special liturgies. Before mass, ushers foster a sense of community by welcoming members of
our parish and visitors. Following all weekend masses, ushers distribute the weekly bulletin and then assure that the church is ready for the next liturgy. Generally, the time commitment for an usher is 1-1.5 hours each week. Come celebrate mass with your family, serve our
community and be an example of Christ’s love and witness to our community. Ministry Contact: Mike Petrucci (949)498-0245 [email protected]
