Holy Communion, Part 2

“O taste and see that the Lord is good!” (Psalm 33:9). We approach the Body and Blood of Christ in “Eucharistic amazement” and joy. The Church carefully regulates the manner of receiving Holy Communion. “The faithful are not permitted to take the consecrated bread or the sacred chalice by themselves and still less, to hand them from one to another” (GIRM, ¶ 160). Holy Communion is never “taken”; it is a Gift received with adoration.

“When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. The consecrated host may be received either on the tongue or in the hand, at the discretion of each communicant. . . . As soon as the communicant receives the host, he or she consumes it entirely. . . . When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before receiving the Precious Blood (GIRM, ¶ 160,161).

After the distribution of Holy Communion, the priest and people spend some time praying in silence. If desired, a psalm or hymn of praise may be sung before the priest says the Prayer After Communion.

JOB OPENING

Youth Minister – Part time The Youth Minister will oversee the English and Spanish speaking middle school and high school youth groups with emphasis on attracting our Hispanic youth. This is a paid, 20 hour per week position and does not include benefits. The ability to speak Spanish is a requirement. To apply for this position, please send your cover letter, resume, and list of five professional references to [email protected] or come by the parish office for an application.

The following letter concerning our current Maintenance Fund appeal was mailed to parishioners. Your support is needed and appreciated. Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your continued financial support of our Parish! There is no doubt God is working in our parish, and we are being led by the Holy Spirit to expand our ministries and show a deep, profound love of God and neighbor.

Since my return to Annunciation of the Lord, I have reviewed our finances and impending maintenance and capital needs. We must undertake an immediate $200,000 short-term capital and maintenance campaign to satisfy current needs of the parish. Maintenance is included in our Operating budget; however, our current needs require additional funding. In order to apprise you of the current financial picture, I offer the following: Financial Overview:

Offertory Budget is below budget through September 23 by $69,578.

Capital Expense and Building & Equipment Maintenance – Because of several leaks, we are undertaking a $76,000 new roof over the cafeteria and kitchen that has minimized the usage of the cafeteria for our school children including their lunch periods. There was an additional $10,000 in damage internally. We have only $57,490 in our maintenance reserve. As the buildings and equipment continue to age, we anticipate an increase in the need for capital funding for both equipment replacement and building improvements.

Our savings will be depleted to cover the remaining cost of the roof.

We are experiencing air conditioning challenges on our aging system that threaten air handling for the school and church. We are attempting a workaround to avoid a $44,000 expenditure. Our current chiller with an estimated life of 10-12 years is in its sixteenth year of service running approximately fifteen hours each day for 75% of the year. We also have a number of small maintenance projects that need attention estimated at $30,000.

The roof replacement over the church and administrative areas can wait for a couple of years, but is expected to cost $200,000. Other repairs and equipment at or near end of life including a chiller and HVAC equipment will push estimated capital needs over $2 million.

Our Paid in Full Campaign to pay off our Church and School note is $65,470 below budget year-to-date. Our outstanding debt as of 7/29/18 is $282,654. Our building fund reserve, once at $200,000, has diminished to $92,000. We are still scheduled to pay off the total debt by May 2019.

Planned/Recent Projects:

Prominent church signage is being constructed on Spring Avenue to replace signage that must be removed due to the road widening. One-half of this $50,000 project is being donated by a parishioner. The other half is from the sale of land for the Spring Ave. right of way that is in reserve.

Five new ceiling fans at a cost of $15,000 have been recommended in lieu of two new air handlers estimated at $300,000 for the church.

Modifying Room C to accommodate young parents as a Quiet/Cry Room will cost $11,000.

The Columbarium project is self-funded. Only one of the 110 niches in the original section remains unsold. We have sold 14 niches in the past year. We need to pre-sell 20 niches by December to completely fund the project. We are almost halfway to that goal.

Portable Wall Panels for the Chapel in the Gathering Space were installed in June to provide privacy, but allow flexibility for weddings and larger gatherings.

The incomplete Outdoor Classroom has a planter project planned this fall as an Eagle Scout project. The plan is to complete the Outdoor Classroom project in 2019 through small, donated projects and not utilize Building or Offertory Funds.

Along with the Finance Council, I have set a short-term goal of $200,000 to be raised by December 31. A pledge card is enclosed and will be available in church pews. Please prayerfully consider your commitment to this Maintenance Fund appeal and return your completed pledge card in the Offertory basket at Mass.

We welcome your comments and feedback. We are grateful for your contributions and sacrifices and ask for your continued support of Offertory and Building Fund in addition to our Maintenance Fund to allow us to complete these projects and prepare for future capital expenses. Trusting in the Holy Spirit, may all show courageous generosity toward God’s plan for us here at Annunciation of the Lord. We can do better and much more with our complete trust in Him! With Blessings of Peace Fr. Charles Merrill, Pastor & Finance Council

Atentamente, P. Carlos

The Columbarium Committee has scheduled the construction of a second section this Fall.

The Columbarium is for the inurnment of the cremated remains of members and former members (and their immediate families -- spouse and children) of Annunciation of the Lord and St. Ann Church.

The new section will have 110 niches, 77 double niches and 33 single niches, same as the current section. All but one niche has been sold in the current section.

The construction cost is self-funded. We have 70% of the funds now and we expect to raise the remaining 30% in Pre-Sales between now and October 31

st.

Fees for niches will be discounted 14% in this Pre-Sale phase, $1600 for a single niche and $2400 for a double niche. Fees include lifetime maintenance. You may select niche locations.

A committee representative will frequently be available after Masses. For more information, you may also contact Don Adair, committee chair (256-355-7757/[email protected]) or Scott Brown (334-799-1582/[email protected]).

Stewardship

We should not be arguing about who is the most important. Today’s Gospel says clearly that those who aspire to greatness must humbly serve the needs of all. Even Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.

few minutes of your time after weekend Masses in the Gathering Space or during the week at the Parish Office you can purchase these gift cards and the school makes money to help with their programs. Please consider using SCRIP whenever you can.
