TWENTY– SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE October 6th, 2019 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time “When you have done all you have been commanded, say ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” The metaphor in the story could seem harsh to us today. A servant has worked hard all day, and rather than receiving a much-needed respite, the master commands an additional task. Jesus, however, is appearing to their sensibilities. This was a hierarchical society in which everyone had a place. His listeners would know this. No servant would presume a reward for good deeds. It’s important to remember that we do have a place at God’s table. But we don’t “earn” it. Dining with the Lord at the heav-enly wedding feast requires surrender. It requires deep faith in God and His promises. It also requires commitment. The king-dom takes work! There are fields to plow and initiatives to pre-pare. There are sheep to tend to and family to care for. There are people waiting for our yes to generous service. When we serve dinner at a homeless shelter, we are waiting on the table of Christ. When we visit an ill relative, we’re imitating the Good Samaritan. We’re visiting Jesus! We’re growing his kingdom of life and love. The Gospel today reminds us to check our motives. Are we serv-ing because we’re seeking a reward? Or because we have faith that this is who we’re meant to serve? That is, is this where we’re meant to be? The Gospel reminds us that this faith can do powerful things! “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” But, ultimately, we’re not the ones doing the deeds. We’re not the ones “earning” the grace. Faith, and the good we do for others, is a gift.

MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGÉLIO – ALENTAR UN ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ES-CRITURA (Gospel Meditations) 6 de octubre de 2019 27º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Los tiempos que se están viviendo en la sociedad actual con refe-rencia a la injusticia y la facilidad para la violencia son alarman-tes. Los medios de comunicación muestran todos los días el có-mo se quita la vida humana, la destrucción del planeta, de las plantas y animales. La primera lectura del Profeta Habacuc, su reclamo a Dios en su tiempo es un reflejo del nuestro: “¿Por qué me haces ver la injusticia?” ¿Acaso no estamos cansados de todo lo que vemos y escuchamos? Tal pareciera que Dios no escucha ni interviene en la miseria humana. Pero no, no es así. Dios res-ponde e invita al Profeta a escribir su visión: “El que vacila nun-ca contará con mi favor, el justo si vivirá por su fideli-dad.” (Habacuc 2:4). Los eventos de la vida del ser humano es-tán en los planes de Dios. Depende de nosotros la fidelidad y el compromiso. ¿Estás de acuerdo con el Profeta? ¿En qué sentido? El Evangelio, por otro lado, nos muestra la forma de alinearnos con la gente buena para hacer cosas que ayuden a la sociedad a crecer en justicia y promover la paz. Esa paz que tanto se necesi-ta en las fronteras del mundo, con los refugiados y los que cami-nan en caravana dejando sus países. Sin embargo, el punto prin-cipal de todo es la fe. Por eso, los apóstoles piden que se aumen-te su fe. El Maestro responde y da ejemplos palpables para llegar hasta mover montañas y agrega lo siguiente: “Así también uste-des, cuando hayan hecho todo lo que les ha sido mandado, di-gan: Somos servidores que no hacíamos falta, hemos hecho lo que era nuestro deber.” (Lucas 17:10). ©LPi

No need to fear death

Death can be a fearful unknown but Christians know that it is a doorway that leads to something wonderful. Still, the idea can produce anxiety in even the strongest Chris-tian. Consider taking steps to reduce that anxiety. Pray daily. Talking to God each day, reading Scr ip-ture, and spending time in prayer is the best way to nur-ture a personal relationship with him. When we know God intimately and personally, we trust him and know to rely on his justice. Go to Confession weekly. The Precepts of the Catholic Church require Catholics to attend the Sacrament of Rec-onciliation (Confession) at least once a year or when aware of serious sin. However, to stay as close to a state of grace as possible, consider going week-ly. Confess all sins of which you are aware. Attend Mass weekly or even daily, if possible. “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (John 6:55). Jesus initiated the Eucharist to fortify us against the temptations and sin of this world.

No hay que temer a la muerte La muerte puede ser algo desconocido y terrible, pero los cristianos saben que es la puerta que nos lleva a algo maravil-loso. Con todo, la idea puede producir ansiedad hasta en el cristiano más sólido. Tenga en cuenta estos pasos para re-ducir esa ansiedad. Rece a diario. Hablar con Dios cada día, leer las Escritu-ras y pasar tiempo en oración es la mejor forma de nutrir una relación personal con él. Cuando conocemos íntima y person-almente a Dios, confiamos en él y dependemos de su justicia. Confiese semanalmente. Los preceptos de la Iglesia católi-ca requieren que los católicos reciban el sacramento de la Reconciliación (Confesión) por lo menos una vez al año o cuando han cometido un pecado mortal. Sin embargo, para estar lo más cerca posible del estado de gracia, procure ir semanalmente. Confiese todos los pecados de los que sea consciente. Vaya a misa semanalmente e incluso a diario, si fuera posible. “Porque mi carne es la verdadera comida y mi san-gre la verdadera bebida” (Juan 6:55). Jesús instituyó la Eu-caristía para fortalecernos frente a las tentaciones y al pecado del mundo.
