A Message From Our President – Karen Marshall

I hope that you and yours have had a good start to 2016 and please know that your DPVA family looks forward to working together to make this year a strong success as well.

Volunteer . . . according to Webster’s Dictionary . . . One who enters into or offers her/himself for service of their own free will. Free will! What is more valuable than one’s time? The time you contribute to your volunteer efforts is invaluable to

the DPVA. The Orchestra and You, SPARK, It’s Instrumental, Q the Music, the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Youth Strings, the Young People’s Concert Previews, Ushering, Ticket Sales, and so many VOLUNTEER opportunities! Also important are the fundraising events that are imperative to the success of our mission to support music educa-tion, our scholarship programs and the DPAA.

Our first fundraiser this year is a fun- filled event featuring “The Rubi Girls” prior to the “ Music of Motown” concert at the Schuster on Saturday, April 16. This hilarious and highly entertaining group of local enter-tainers have been performing for over 25 years benefiting many non-profit organizations all over the state of Ohio. A MUST see for only $60 in the Mathile Theatre from 5:30 – 8:00 pm with light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. AND if you

do not have tickets already for the Music of Motown concert . . . we can offer you tickets for an additional $20 per ticket after attending “The Rubi Girls”. A totally most entertaining evening you will not want to miss!

Also! If you shop at DLM or Kroger, you can sign up as a GOOD Neighbor and have your purchases credited to DPVA!!! It is an easy and generous way to contribute to our mission!

As we continue on this year, please consider where you might best give of your time and unique talents. I am looking forward to seeing your faces and know that it is because of YOU that we can and DO make a  difference.

Become a Key Player!DPVA launches its newest campaign at the Dayton Philharmonic’s Brahms Festival concerts on May 6 and 7, 2016. We invite you, your business or your group to purchase a key on our piano sign and became a DPVA Key Player! The sign with your or your group’s name will be displayed in the Schuster lobby throughout

the 2016-2017 season, and at the end of the season, you will receive a memento. Information will also be in future DPO program booklets.

This is a wonderful way to support the DPO, the DPAA education programs, and music scholarships. The education programs include:

•   Q the Music at Ruskin Elementary:  This is an after-school program for 3rd to 6th graders in which students learn a string instrument, have a healthy snack and get academic tutoring. In addition to

music skills, students learn respect, teamwork and responsibility, and in the process, increase their reading scores.

•   Orchestra & You:  This is a darling program for 2nd-graders to intro-duce them to the orchestra; 3 docents go into 80+ schools each year with Plexiglas instruments, posters, and a kid-sized tuxedo for a budding conductor.

•   SPARK:  In this program a DPO musician is paired with a classroom teacher; they prepare multidisciplinary lessons for grades K-5 at 8 schools over the course of the year; either conductor Neil Gittleman or Patrick Reynolds visits, and two docents visit in preparation for the SPARK concerts.

•   Young People Concerts:  Every spring and fall, 4200 students descend on the Schuster Center for two performances of a Young People’s Concert by the DPO. To prepare the students for these, two docents bring props and Power-Point presentations and visit over seventy schools each year.

There is another way to help the Key Player Campaign. We need:•   Volunteers to be at performances 

where the sign will be displayed to hand out information and accept donations.

•   A volunteer Coordinator to schedule those volunteers.

The DPVA Scholarship Fund pro- vides music education scholarships for young people throughout the Miami Valley. The DPVA is a tax- exempt entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

David Pierson Young Musician’s Concerto Competition

Marguerite Murphy – CELLO

Marguerite Murphy has been playing the cello for eleven years, the first ten under the tutelage of Dayton Philharmonic member Nadine Monchecourt. She now studies with Alan Rafferty and Sarah Kim. She has participated in many summer camps and festivals, and has been a member of the Cincinnati Youth Symphony since ninth grade. She is currently a sophomore at Walnut Hills High School.

Maggie played Hungarian Rhapsody by David Popper.

Angela Lin – PIANO

Angela Lin is a junior at Beavercreek High School. She has studied piano under Barbara Wasson for 12 years now and has played keyboard for her school jazz band and show choir. When not behind the piano, Angela can be found running, reading, or writing.

Angela played Rhapsody in G minor, Op 79 No. 2 by Johannes Brahms.

WinnerSunao Masunaga – FLUTE

Sunao Masunaga is a junior at Troy High School. She was born in Japan, and started playing her flute at 7th grade in the band. After her family moved to the United States, Sunao participated in many competitions and won the David Pierson Concerto

Competition and the opportunity to perform with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra at the Schuster Center for the November Young People Concert. At school, she is a member of the National Honor Society and during her free time, she likes to cook, read, and watch movies.
