HELPFUL NAMES & NUMBERS

Everyone knows to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency to get connected to the police, fire or ambulance service. But what if it’s not an emergency and you still require assistance with the basic needs in life? Call 2-1-1! This free hotline will tell you where to get food, cloth-ing, shelter, money for home heating expenses, drug treatment, employment support, childcare, physical or mental health resources, elder care, services for people with disabilities, crisis intervention and much more.

Through the efforts of your local United Ways, along with many local leaders, businesses, volunteers and human service agencies, Hudson Valley Region 2-1-1 was launched to provide you with ready access to the information you need. It is operational in Orange, Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Rockland, Putnam and

Westchester counties. Last year alone, 2-1-1 received 37,591 calls and was able to provide referrals for these Hudson Valley residents.

By calling 2-1-1, you can speak to a knowledgeable and caring information and referral (I&R) specialist who can put you in touch with health and human service organizations that can help you. The hotline is free, confidential and features a translation service utilizing over 150 languages.

This guide, compliments of the Times Herald-Record, serves as a handy reference to keep near your phone. Many of the agencies and programs included are part of the United Way family, and they are available to ev-eryone in the community. We are pleased to bring this valuable information to you.

Connecting you to the resources you need

When times are tough, you shouldn’t have to go it alone.

Sad to say, many people in the Hudson Valley are facing hardships on their own, every day. Some have lost their jobs and health benefits. Others are caregivers for senior or disabled family members, often while juggling the demands of work and family life. Many are struggling to stretch fixed incomes. Others are coping with serious illnesses.

But help and hope are available. Thousands of local people in need will experience a healthier, brighter tomorrow, thanks to The United Way of Orange County, United Way of Sullivan County and United Way of Ulster County. Each of these vital organizations part-ners with health and human services agencies in their neighborhoods to make a real difference in the most difficult of circumstances.

That’s what this publication, the Health Care & Human Services Directory, is all about. This annually updated guide produced by the Times Herald-Record provides a comprehensive listing of regional aid and support. Need assistance feeding your family? Have

parenting questions? Seeking services for senior citizens, the disabled, or those battling addictions? Need emergency shelter? Information on a wide range of services and resources is at your fingertips.

Please take a few minutes to look through these pages, and keep this guide close at hand. We are grateful to the United Way and the many dedicated and caring staff members and volunteers who work extremely hard. If you have the good fortune not to need these services, we encourage you to give of your time or donate to one of these worthy organizations.

Let’s work together to make our Hudson Valley an even better place, by making sure that people in need don’t face difficult times alone.
