What you definitely should read

You should read the following informationcarefully before operating your car radio.

Traffic safety

Traffic safety should be your main concern. At all times you should use your car radiosystem so that you are able to react to theexisting traffic conditions quickly.

Consider that your automobile travels 46 feetper second when driven at a speed of 31miles/hour.

We recommend that you refrain from oper-ating the car radio when traffic conditionsare critical.

You must be able to react to warning sig-nals (e.g. ,by the police and the fire depart-ment) in a timely and safe manner whendriving your car.

For that reason, you should listen to yourprogram at an appropriate volume level.

Equalizer Setting

The sound in a vehicle is determined to agreater extent by the acoustic characteris-tics of the interior than by the characteris-tics of the loudspeaker.Position, installation and the rear volume of,for example, the door or the rear shelf playa larger role.Even if the loudspeakers are carefully se-lected and installed resonances in the inte-rior of the car can negatively impact thesound. This could lead to an elimination of the baselevel or to roaring or a dominating [?] mid-dle level. The musical instrument or voices could beseriously distorted or the sound could ap-pear completely muffled. The sound effect from a car radio could besignificantly improved if certain frequencyareas could be suppressed or amplified. This unit is equipped with one (Nevada RDM168) or two (Alaska RDM 168) parametricfilters. The first filter referred to as LOW EQ canbe set to a range between 32 Hz and 500Hz. The second filter referred to as HIGHEQ can be set to a range between 630 Hzand 10,000 Hz. In this case, parametricmeans that the frequency and the volumeincrease/decrease (+10 to -20db) can beadjusted separately for each filter.

This parametric filter can be adjusted pre-cisely without any measuring instruments. The individual steps necessary for the set-tings are described in the table.

Setting instructions

The following instructions are only recom-mendations. You are free to implement yourown sound preferences. When you adjust the filters we recommendthat you use a CD with music you are famil-iar with. The CD titles should present various instru-ments and songs. Music that is purely elec-tronic will not serve the purpose becausethe original sound will not be known.Set the bass, treble, balance and fader to“0” before you set the equalizers and, if nec-essary, turn off the loudness function. This setting is described under “AUD” in thequick reference. Now listen to the CD you are familiar with.Determine whether the sound effect meetsyour expectations. Then read the table under “Sound effect/problem” and find a solution under “Action”.Adjust the bass and middle sound level withthe LOW EQ filter. For the high and middle levels, choose HIGHEQ (only the Alaska RDM 168).

You can set the HIGH EQ and LOW EQ fil-ters in the DSC menu:• Press the DSC key.

Press / repeatedly until HIGH EQor LOW EQ appears in the display.

• Press << or >> once and set the levelby pressing / according to the tablebelow.

• Change the frequency areas by press-ing << >>.

• Press the DSC key to store the newsettings.

You can activate the equalizer in the DSCmenu under the option EQ ON and deacti-vate it under the option EQ OFF. Thus, youare able compare the sound with and with-out the equalizer.
