The Breslin Student Events Center was brimming with Odyssey of the Mind participants from all over the world, some joined by their families and supporters, celebrating the months of work, effort and planning it took to get to this year’s World Finals. The crowd excitement was visible, ablaze with color and lights as vuvuzelas sounded against the hubbub of celebrating students. Program Director Sammy Micklus took the stage, beginning the evening’s events. “This was not just the best World Finals ever,” he proclaimed. “It was the best event ever.” As the crowd roared, he thanked the many volunteers who work tirelessly to help make Odyssey of the Mind possible. “We couldn’t do all this without you.” The first award of the evening went to Jackie Otte, who was celebrated for more than 30 years of volunteerism with OotM. She was humbled by the recognition of her commitment to the competition, her passion clear as day as she thanked OotM, grateful for its existence. The crowd cheered for each team that was awarded for their hard work, but a few standing ovations occurred over the course of the evening. One was for coaches Dawn and Rich Outtrim of Tannersville, New York. The couple were recipients of one of the 2013 OMER’s Awards – presented to teams and individuals who demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship, exemplary behavior and exceptional talent throughout World Finals. In the fall of 2012, the Outtrims experienced the tragic loss of their eldest son. Despite such hardship, they did not want to let their team down so they chose to continue coaching, showing dedication to their team in the face of personal tragedy. The Awards Ceremony celebrated the perseverance, courage and commitment of everyone in the room. Odyssey of the Mind founder Dr. Sam Micklus looked out at the crowd, beaming. “All of you here tonight have brought tremendous pride to your homelands. What a fantastic event,” he said.

“We couldn’t do all this without you.”

The first award of the evening went to Jackie Otte, who was celebrated for more than 30 years of volunteerism with OotM. She was humbled by the recognition of her

commitment to the competition, her passion clear as day as she thanked OotM, grateful for its existence.

Indeed it was. Everyone left exuberant and excited to take on what was needed to come back to the next World Finals event.

tHaNkS FrOM CCiCreative Competitions, Inc. would

like to congratulate all the teams that have competed this year. You continue to impress everyone with your talent and kindness.

Remember, whether your team places 3rd, 13th, or 30th at World Finals, you’ve still made your mark out of the thousands of teams that solved the problem this year.

As Dr. Sam likes to say, you have the most creative minds in the world, so be proud of your ideas—no matter how strange other people may view them!

We hope you’ve had fun over the past

few days by meeting fellow creative thinkers from around the world. You now have friends from Switzerland - to California - to New Jersey . . . and everywhere in between. Our Odyssey of the Mind family continues to grow even stronger with each new team.

Of course none of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteers and parents.

All of your hard work over the past year did not go without notice. You are preparing generations of problem-solvers to be the best that they can be! We are

also proud of all the alumni that have come back as adults to volunteer - you are the new generation of Odyssey officials!

A special nod also goes out to the Odyssey Angels program - Odyssey’s charity initiative. This year’s selected group has proven that young people can truly make a difference.

Thanks to all of you from CCI - you have truly touched our lives. To be able to witness such talented students and inspiring coaches is amazing. Best wishes to everyone - and here’s hoping you have another year filled with creativity and fun!

This team’s set design and props demonstrated such exceptional skill that it could easily be used in a Broadway production. The performance featured a giant boat, complete with crashing waves and a moving monsoon costume. Another prop surprised judges -- it appeared to be a trash heap, but when hit with light, it cast a shadow of a beautiful woman. The team used two prism-like devices to give the appearance of the team swimming, diving and more.

At the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, it should not come as a surprise that one of the most popular events of the competition is the International Festival. Here, teams from all over the globe bring souvenirs to sell to attendees, ranging from OotM-inspired pins and shirts, to things that are resoundingly from their own cultures; like a tote bag with a Union Jack and an English bulldog on the front, found at the U.K. booth.

“The International Festival gives international teams the opportunity to bring things that are indigenous from their country and give everyone else more of an idea of what things they have there,” says Michael Dobos, souvenirs manager for OotM. “The festival also gives the international teams an opportunity to raise money for their teams [with the souvenirs they bring], as it can be very expensive for them to travel to Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.”

Whatever profits the countries make from souvenir sales, they get to keep to help them with their Odyssey programs. Items on sale range from 50 cents to ten dollars in price. Some of the countries with souvenirs at the festival were China, Canada, Poland, the United Kingdom and many more.

Dobos knows attendees get a lot more than souvenirs out of being at the International

Festival. “I think just being here and seeing what’s available, people get a little bit of a taste of where other people are from. You get a little aspect of their country and what things are different or similar between everybody. Even though we’re not from the same country, we can all find similarities.”

The common thread at almost every booth was OMER. Whether he was on a pin, shirt or bag – the Odyssey of the Mind mascot was well represented, reminding everyone that the common purpose at World Finals is working together to find creative solutions by sharing and exchanging … whether it be ideas, pins or souvenirs!

This team took a risk by using minimalistic costume and scenery to create an emotionally moving per-formance. The visually stunning face was adorned with a motorized flower that could spin. The team also constructed a mosaic backdrop with various trash items such as spoons, beans, pasta and more. It formed a portrait of the band Kiss, and a Lady Gaga costume so over-the-top that it would impress the star herself.
