Happy Saint Patrick s Day and our best wishes to all our Irish friends! So many Australians have Irish connections and today is a special opportunity to thank the Irish people for their extraordinary contribution to Australia. It is also a day when people remember the missionary endeavours of St Patrick and his desire to bring the Christian faith to the Green Isles. In turn, it was the Irish who spread the faith to so many other parts of the world, including Australia. The Annual General Meeting of the Parents and Friends Association will be held this evening at the Sadadeen campus library, commencing at 7.30pm. It is anticipated that the 2011 Executive will be formed at the meeting, so please come along and offer your talents and time to the Association. The work of the Parents and Friends Association is so important in the life of the College. Thank you for your assistance over the past three days with the taking of the College Photographs. This is always a busy time as individual, family groups, and class photographs are taken. Tomorrow, we will celebrate the Opening School Mass at the Alice Springs Convention Centre, commencing at 9.30am. Bishop Eugene Hurley will be the main celebrant, accompany by Fr Jim Knight and other priests of the Alice Springs parish. During the liturgy our new College leaders will read their pledge of service to the College community. College News PIZZA DAY AT ALL THREE CAMPUSES The OLSH Jazz Players will be having a pizza day at each campus on Wednesday, March 30th. Homeroom teachers will have tickets for any students who are interested. If you prefer, please fill out the document at the end of the newsletter and have your child give it, with payment in full, to your homeroom teacher. Thank you for supporting the students in their fundraising efforts.

P & F News All are welcome to attend the AGM tonight at 7:30 pm please come along and be a part of your child s school community. Sadadeen Library 7:30 pm.

HIP HOP SONG WRITING WORKSHOPS Last Friday 18 Sadadeen students participated in the Hip Hop Song Writing Workshops sponsored by InCite Youth Art and organised by Elspeth Blunt. The workshops, run by Corey McGregor, a Hip Hop artist from Melbourne, were greatly enjoyed by the students. Corey took them through the process of coming up with a theme, writing the lyrics, recording their vocals and a few students even added some riffs on their instruments. The students can be very proud of their final result!

Let us pray that this Lent will help us reproduce in our lives the self-sacrificing love of Christ.

Father, through our observance of Lent, help us to understand the meaning of your Son's death and resurrection, and teach us to reflect it in our lives. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Campus News: Bath St Happy St Patrick s Day! I hope those of you with Irish forebears ( and those of you that don t!) have enjoyed the day. We have had an interesting day of hats, green slushies and assorted activities at the Bath Street Campus. Thank goodness for the return of the sunshine.

STAFF NEWS Unfortunately Miss Megan Nertney has had to travel to Adelaide for some unexpected surgery, and she will be away for the rest of the term. Many thanks to Mrs Simonetto and Mrs Scollen who have agreed to work full time for the next two weeks to cover Megan s absence. Starting tomorrow (Friday 18th March), Mrs Simonetto will work in Room 5 and Mrs Scollen will work in Room 1. We wish Megan well with her recovery.

This will be my last newsletter for a while as I am also travelling to Adelaide for some knee surgery. During my time away, Mr Healy will be Acting Head of Campus, and Miss Levitt will assume the role of Acting Assistant Head of Campus. This means that Mr Gosling will take up three days of teaching in Room 13 until May 27th. I am sure that I am leaving the campus in very capable hands.

COLLEGE MASS Tomorrow the campus will travel to the Convention Centre to celebrate the whole College Mass. We will travel to and from the Centre by bus. The Mass will commence at 9.30am. You are most welcome to join us. We expect to be back on campus by 11.00am. Please make sure that the children are dressed in the full summer uniform ( not sports uniform) for this special occasion.

PROJECT COMPASSION Once again, it is time for us to raise as much money as we can for Caritas Australia, through Project Compassion . OLSH College is the second major fundraiser in the Northern Territory, beaten only by St John s College in Darwin. Each class has a Project Compassion box and is learning about different people, from different countries and how their lives are so much different to ours. At Bath St we like to have a special focus, so that we can realize how lucky we are. For this week, we would ask each child to bring in 10c for every television that there is in their house.

KISS N GO If you require a name card for your car, please contact the office and we will supply one for you. Please continue to be patient when using this area, as there are a lot of us and not many parking opportunities!

HARMONY DAY March 21st is the day set aside for a focus on creating a harmonious environment for all Australians. At OLSH College we are setting aside Friday 25th March as our day of celebration. As it is one of our casual clothes days, the students are asked to wear traditional dress next Friday to celebrate their family cultures and traditions.

MERIT POINT WINNERS Irene Antu, Maggie Dash, Brody Barber, Alex Eglinton, Brandon Kemp, Sodhak Dhingra, Joylene Williams. Tahnee Beale, Georgina Korljan.

Thank you to our Sponsors.

I hope you can join us tomorrow at the Convention Centre.

Campus News: Traeger Swimming Carnival

The students participated very well and our programme led by Miss Natalie De Bona was ahead of schedule all day. Well done and thanks again to the Traeger staff, and parents who volunteered to make this a wonderful day for our students. Well done to Miss Natalie De Bona; all of your hard work resulted in a great day. Thanks

TEAM TRIATHLON OLSH Traeger had a fantastic turn out at the Team Triathlon last Saturday held by the Junior Triathlon club. With 24 students rising bright and early for a 7am start, I think a few parents had mixed feelings about the start time. All the students did exceptionally well and won a tropy for the best represented school in Alice Springs.

OLSH Traeger s first Male team across the line were Liam Glynn, Luke Pankhurst and Declan Rose in a time of 18 minutes and 34 seconds. The first female OLSH Traeger team across the line were Dana Schembri, Jessica Marshall and Kiara McIntyre in a time of 23minutes and 34 seconds.

You can find out more about our organisation by visiting www.studentexchange.org.au.

In June/July 2011 Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd will be receiving exchange students from Europe, the USA and Latin America. Our new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a local school for 2-10 months. As we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families who might be interested to host a student. Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages.

All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a school in your local area and live the life of a local. Our group of students cover a wide variety of interests and hobbies.

Hosting an exchange student can be a truly rewarding experience. It allows a family to experience a foreign culture first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on a bit of our own culture. They might even make a friend for life! If you have any questions about hosting an exchange student call our office on 1300 135 331. No obligation.

TAKE HOME A BIG BROTHER OR BIG SISTER Give your children the wonderful opportunity to have an international big brother or big sister by hosting one of our exceptional international students arriving in Australia in July for their 5 or 10 month programs. all arranged by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. Visit us at www.scce.com.au, email [email protected]
