You know that the duty of the conclave was to give a bishop to Rome. It seems that my brother cardinals went almost to the end of the world to get him. But here we are. I thank you for this welcome by the diocesan community of Rome and to its bishop. Thank you. First of all, I would like to say a prayer for our bishop emeritus, Benedict XVI. Let us all pray together for him, let us all pray together for him so that the Lord may bless him and the Madonna may protect him. (The new pope then prayed the Lord’s Prayer’, the ‘Hail Mary’ and the ‘Glory Be’ with the crowd in Italian). And now, let us start this journey, bishop and people, bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome, which leads all the Churches in charity, a journey of fraternity, of love, of trust among us. Let us always pray for us, one for the other, let us pray the whole world, so that there may be a great fraternity. I hope that this journey of the Church that we begin today and which my cardinal vicar, who is here with me, will help me with, may be fruitful for the evangelisation of this beautiful city. Now, I would like to give you a blessing, but first I want to ask you for a favour. Before the bishop blesses the people, I ask that you pray to the Lord so that he blesses me. This is prayer of the people who are asking for the blessing of their bishop. In silence, let us say this prayer of you for me. (After a few seconds of silent prayer, he then delivered his blessing). Now I will give you and the whole world a blessing, to all men and women of good will. Tomorrow I want to go to pray to the Madonna so that she protects all of Rome. Good night and have a good rest. Education in the OLSH Tradition: Faith-Filled, Reverence Relationships, Pursue Excellence, Touch the Hearts of Others

Dear Family and Friends of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, The world story of this past week is our story too – let us take into our hearts the presence of God among us and within us! The first words of Pope Francis delivered at his first blessing and message to the world approximately one hour after his election as pope…

Brothers and sisters, good evening.

Elevate Education Parent Information Session

This week approximately 100 parents of Year 10, 11 and 12 students were privileged to attend this session. Mietta, an energetic and very knowledgeable presenter, gave us tips for experiencing success and fulfilment through the VCE years and beyond. In addition to study tips, stress was placed on students experiencing life on a university campus early; parents were encouraged to take their students to Open Days at TAFEs and Universities from Year 10 onwards. The other important focus for students should be having a clear goal and from Year 10 students should be should be actively investigating career pathways. Research shows students who know what they want to do after VCE are more motivated and perform better; the 60 per cent who don't know are less motivated, and those who have no clarity about what they want to do don't perform as well. Students should research their options with the help of teachers and careers advisers. Tips for students:

• Know the Key skills and Key Knowledge required in each Outcome for each of the subjects you are undertaking. • Complete as many practice exams as possible. Research shows that this is the most powerful preparation you can do to

do well in exams.

Exams and Study Designs for every subject can be found on the VCAA web site www.vcaa.vic.edu.au

Once you have your goal, don't obsess about it. Focus, as mountain climbers do, on getting to camp one. All the little steps will add up and you will get to the top of the mountain.

Many students choose a course because it sounds good but know little about it; reverse the process and work out what you are interested in.

Parents can and, must play an active role in their daughter’s making decisions about their future.

More study tips are available from http://au.elevateeducation.com/

Term 2 - Winter Uniform A reminder that all students will be required to be in full winter uniform for the beginning of Term 2. Please contact the College if you need to make an appointment with the uniform shop. National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence As a College, who has reverencing relationships as one of its core pillars, it was important that we recognised this national day of action in a significant way. All students received “say no to bullying” wrist bands, our committed student leaders organised an orange themed cake stall to promote the message and all homerooms watched a movie clip on how we at OLSH “can change a life”. This moving depiction produced by Issoudun White demonstrated their view on how we all have the ability to change the life of another by our actions.

Parentingideas - Michael Grose The College has become a Parentingideas School Member. As a member you will be receiving regular parenting articles on topical and practical issues via the school’s newsletter. All teachers will also have access to parenting tip sheets and other strategies to help support you.

This week’s parenting idea is ‘Wielding soft power at home’ Your parenting authority works well with easy, compliant children but teenagers and demanding kids require some pretty nifty communication skills if you are going to win their cooperation. Read more by opening the pdf document ‘Wielding soft power at home’ attached to the email with this newsletter.

B.A.M - A girls only Self Defence and Emotional Awareness Program Glen Eira City Council Youth Services along with the youth express is currently advertising girls only self-defence and emotional awareness program called B.A.M (Body and Mind). The program will run weekly at the Glen Eira Youth Information Centre and is aimed at Year 9 and 10 girls. For seven weeks girls will learn basic self defence techniques, as well as coping strategies for when life gets tough. Each session will be centred around a topic at increasing emotional and self awareness and understanding and boosting self confidence. Staff Professional Learning at OLSH

Performance Development and Coaching at OLSH is about improving learning outcomes for all students through increased professional dialogue, observation of learning in the classroom and feedback to teachers from students. This week we begin collecting data from students in Year 7 to Year 12 via an online survey consisting of 30 statements, which are scored between 1 (low) to 5 (high). Each teacher will receive data from two of their classes and then use this information to assist with re-defining their own professional learning goals for 2013. VATE Literature Units 3 & 4 - attended by Amy Mather on 19 February This professional learning day was vital to examining the key components of the Literature course in Year 12 and understanding how to get teachers and students working smarter to cover all the content and texts in a crammed and vital year. Preparation for the examination and close analysis techniques were the key focus, including how to teach the techniques needed and assess the work successfully – especially given how difficult it is to do well in this subject. Discovery Australian Physical, Health & Outdoor Education Conference - attended by Robyn Rayment on 22 February The first session, ‘engaging students and enhancing learning through peer and self-assessment’, was conducted by teachers from Ballarat and Clarendon College. It was interesting to learn about the various methods of assessment they have developed, with particular emphasis on peer and self-assessment. Nerida Matthews then presented an overview and lead a discussion of the Australian Curriculum HPE draft paper. Finally, ‘Biomechanics made easy’ was all about using iPads for student engagement. This was a practical session exploring apps such as ‘coaches eye’. It is possible that this app might be used in OLSH classes in the future. Preparation of Folios for VCE Art - attended by Bronwyn Cottrell on 23 February This Professional Learning session was conducted by Art Education Victoria. Two past students who received a very high result discussed and presented their folios. An adviser to VCAA in the ARTS presented a session on ‘Criterion and Folio Annotation and Development’. Both sessions were very interesting, particularly to view student work and witness the explanations of their concepts. An Art Head of Department who spoke also provided notes which have been sent to the OLSH VCE students. The follow up with the OLSH Art students has included running through critical areas of the study design to ensure students had a full understanding.

World Challenge Training Camp 16 & 17 March

Bright and early on Saturday, 16 March, the 2013 World Challenge team set off for Gembrook for our training camp. After exchanging money, learning how to carry our packs and figuring out where to go, we set off excitedly for our 15km hike. It began quite easily, all downhill and everyone full of sugar from the bus trip.

We made our ‘gourmet’ lunch, took a few photos and set off for the last few km’s. Soon after, the heavens opened and saturated us with torrential rain. Our packs were full of water; everything we thought was waterproof apparently wasn’t and our lovely campsite soon became filled with water. We quickly set up camp to try get warm and dry but most of us woke up to wet shoes which we had left outside our tents. Day 2 began with a lesson on setting up hammocks and tying knots. From personal experience, I can say hammocks are extremely comfy. Anyway, we set off into the sunshine glad that we had negotiated a good price with the ‘taxi man’ to take us up a few hills. Day 2 proved to be a lot harder with many up-hill battles, but thankfully the rain held out as we headed for home.

Our group would like to thank Ms O’Loughlin for opening the gate for us so we could get the bus out and a huge thank you to Ms Singh and Ms Rayment for coming along for the weekend and helping us prepare for our big trip!!

Science News

In Science last week, my class did two experiments focusing on energy. In our first experiment, we cut spirals out of aluminium foil and tied them above a Bunsen burner using a piece of string. When we lit the Bunsen burner, the foil began to spin like a snake. It looked fantastic! In our second experiment, Ms Byers challenged us to see if we could make a cotton reel move along the bench without simply pushing it! We put a rubber band through the centre of an empty cotton spool with a toothpick at one end and a pencil at the other. We placed sticky tape on the toothpick to stop it from moving. We then wound up the rubber band by spinning the pencil, placed both the pencil and the cotton spool wound up with it. We let go of the cotton spool and it moved along the bench top as he rubber band unwound. How? The potential energy of the wound up rubber band changed to kinetic energy and vroom vroom vroom.

Sports News SCSA Tennis – 2013

On the Thursday, 7 March the OLSH Tennis teams travelled to Boroondara Tennis Club to compete in the annual SCSA Division 2 Tennis Tournament. OLSH stepped out onto the court to defend two premierships from 2012. Despite the temperature reaching a ‘cool’ 33 degrees, the girls played with great enthusiasm to produce some great wins, excellent rallies and close upsets. The OLSH girls played with great sportsmanship all day and can be very proud of how they represented the College. The final results being:

MUSIC DANCE DRAMA

NATASHA DUARTE On Tuesday, 12 March, the young and upcoming singer-songwriter Natasha Duarte, accompanied by full band and lighting crew, gave the girls a wonderful lunchtime performance. Natasha performed some of her old songs, as well as her new single Telling Me Not To, which has reached ninth place on Australian Singles Aria charts. The girls were encouraged to get up, dance and sing along! I'm sure all the girls enjoyed hearing Natasha live, and we look forward to seeing her on other stages in the near future.
