As we look ahead, we will remember and celebrate the life of Marie Louise Hartzer on Tuesday, 27 August. It is her birthday and it is always good to remind ourselves that OLSH College would never have been if it weren’t for her life and her ‘Yes’ in all things. I sense that if she were with us today, she would look each one of us in the eye and ask the question penned by the great poet Mary Oliver: “‘Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Together we pray: Loving God, give us the courage and strength to follow where you

lead us. Just as Marie Louise Hartzer lived life to the full, inspire us to do the same. May we always strive to be on earth the heart of God.

Amen.

On Friday, 26 July, 28 brave students and 10 staff spent a night out in the cold to raise awareness and funds for those homeless in our area.

Students and staff arrived on the night with just a sleeping bag and pillow. After a simple dinner consisting of soup and bread roll, the participants headed to the common room to listen to the guest speakers who spoke about their experiences. These speakers alluded to the reality of homelessness and touched those there with their personal stories. We learnt just how hard it is to break the cycle of homelessness and just how easy it is to fall into it.

Leading up to the night students were asked to donate toiletries to be packaged and distributed by St. Vinnie’s among the homeless. The girls set up a workstation where they packaged the toiletries into small bags. In the art room girls worked on the OLSH Winter Sleepout Banner; later they had the opportunity to inscribe messages on the banner during a special liturgy. It was a moving time to reflect on what all had learnt and experienced.

The greatest act of solidary of the night was when students and staff went to bed with a simple mat and sleeping bag outside in the art courtyard. Although

there might have been some slight discomfort and cold, the reality is that on any given night in Australia, over 100,000 people are homeless and 15% of these sleep outdoors. Participating in the Winter Sleep Out not only enabled the students and staff to experience a night out in the cold but gave everyone a better understanding of what it means to be homeless. As a school community we are striving to create an education of the entire person who will dedicate themselves to the service of others, particularly advocacy and raising awareness of critical justice issues in our local community such as homelessness. Thank you to all those who participated in this social action event.

One of the Interdisciplinary Strands of the Australian Curriculum

Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia aims to develop active and informed citizens working together to build harmonious local, regional and global communities, and build Australia’s social, intellectual and creative capital. The curriculum also places Australia very much in the context of the Asian region. At OLSH we have used the Back@Bentleigh program to build on our students’ understanding of the diversity of the cultures of people living in Australia. This experience fostered an understanding in our school community that social inclusion and cohesion is vital to the prosperity of Australia.

Last week we welcomed back our Issoudun girls after ten weeks of being apart. At the assembly the girls were presented with the Hartzer Cup. Throughout their time at Hartzer the girls received golden tickets for their actions, behaviour, good deeds, for teamwork, punctuality, random acts of kindness, hard work and effort. Each homeroom - lime, pink and purple - also collected points for various activities whilst away.

The HEN was chosen as the cup and will be awarded to the winning homeroom each year. Why the HEN? The HEN is the first creature to greet the sun and it’s the first to announce its presence to the world. The HEN is always on the threshold of change, they have to be aware in darkness and then look for the light. And so too, their experience at Hartzer. Just like the HEN, the girls have been the first group to greet this experience, and they have been the first group that now can announce it to the world. Just like the HEN our girls have been on the threshold of change. A change in the way of living, a change in the way of learning and a change in the way of being.

Kate Tranter and Isabel Quintal (Winners of the Hartzer Cup- Purple)

Our expectation is that all girls are wearing their uniform with pride. It is an expectation that students are wearing no more than two earrings in the lobe. All other piercings must be removed. Students are also reminded that their skirt must be no more than two finger widths above the knee. Your support with this is appreciated.

Resilience is developing strategies to get through the inevitable tough times that we all have. The language of resilience generally refers to coping strategies such as good humour, empathy and acceptance. Read the pdf document attached to the email with this newsletter to assist with ways that you can build the resilience in your daughters.

Celebrating Open Day yesterday, we had the opportunity to showcase the best we at OLSH have to offer. To see our committed staff in action, preparing displays, rooms and lessons and seeing our girls busily cleaning rooms and tidying up in preparation, the word ‘hospitality’ came to mind. Open Day is gift for us – it is our opportunity to extend an invitation, to welcome visitors, to make room for the ‘other’ and to share generously of our gifts and talents. We open our gates, our hearts, our classrooms and our grounds so that our visitors may experience something of the hospitality of God through us. So while it may be Open Day, it is so much more than that! Sr Megan Donohue fdnsc

Our library was transformed into a galactic spectacular for ‘Read across the Universe’ – the theme for this

year’s Book Week. A rocket, a beautiful revolving globe, stars and an astronaut named George Clooney decorated our space and set the tone for the week’s celebrations. Monday’s talent quest ‘BE A STAR’ saw stellar performances by Alexa Parmar, Nieve Sellwood, Georgia Dabbous, Natasha White, Angelina Chamoun, Bianca Schragger, Maddison Muller, Aviva White, Kat Copelmayer and Jinn Chong. Each girl bravely stood before their peers for judging and were all enthusiastically received. The winners on the day were Georgia Dabbous and Natasha White. Tuesday saw talents of a different type emerge. ‘STAR WARS’ was a knockout competition for anyone who wished to participate and answer questions about ‘Star Wars’ ‘Star Trek’,’The Big Bang Theory’ and the galaxy. Tensions were high, and the four students left standing dazzled with their celestial knowledge. 1st place Taylor Barrone, 2nd place Marissa Cafasso, 3rd place Danni Tzivakis and 4th place Aisling Atkins. Well done girls! Wednesday explored the themes of magic and mystery across the universe with a performance by the amazing magician ‘Simon X’. Staff and students alike were enthralled by his card tricks – not to mention the transformation of a $5 note into a $20 note!

Our last day of celebrations showcased the talents of staff and students alike with ‘Universal Theatre Sports’. The staff team – Miss Schocker, Mrs Fries and Mrs Coetzee – took on our student team – Rachael McNamara, Sarah Jones and Aubrey Caldera-Page in a series of improvisational skits. In a tight finish the staff team emerged victorious. A big thank you to the wonderful library staff – especially Mrs Cooper - who support all endeavours in this special week. Thanks also to all staff and students who attended lunchtime activities and entered our quizzes. Book Week is always fun – but above all, it celebrates the importance of reading. Reading enhances intelligence, reduces stress, improves memory, writing skills, analytical thinking and provides pleasure!

What could be better than designing a parachute that allows an egg to drop safely from a height of five metres or building an impressive pasta tower held together by marshmallows? These are some of the activities that were run last week here at OLSH College as part of Science Maths Week.

The week was filled with individual and group activities to provide learning opportunities in a fun and engaging manner. They ran at lunchtime and it was encouraging to see so many students showing enthusiasm and a keen interest in Science and Mathematics.

At this week’s assembly students were awarded with certificates and prizes in recognition of their achievements.

Congratulations to the following students:

Monday – Egg Drop Experiment 1st prize – Sanika Hambarday, Tea Melican, Aemilya Sargent and Lauren Wolbers 2nd prize – Janis Cox and Laura Daly 3rd prize— Tara Rohan and Lauren Kavanagh Tuesday – Challenging Conundrums Equal 1st prize – Katelyn Fitchett, Emily Davidson and Anya Serpanchy Encouragement Award – Maria Farag Thursday – The Quintessential Quiz 1st Prize – Katelyn Fitchett and Emily Davidson Equal 2nd prize – Piwainashe Kahonde and Kristy Tong; Sarah Carneiro and India Hawkins Friday – Pasta Power Tower 1st prize – Angela Truong, Anya Serpanchy, Ankita Sehgal and Jacquelyn Cox 2nd prize – Brenda Szeto, Olivia Matiasi and Shanika Sirimane A huge vote of thanks to our wonderful Year 11 helpers - Kaylee La’Brooy, Chloe Lewis, Jasmina Lieu, Leanne Haidar, Emma Sturt and Mairead McCaffrey. They assisted in designing activities and were present every day to ensure that the activities ran smoothly.

Also the success of the week is always dependent on our Laboratory Manager, Mrs Fran Newbold. Thank you, Mrs Newbold! Why is Science Maths Week so important? There is a huge demand for females in these fields. We are encouraging our students to look outside the traditional stereotypes of scientists and mathematicians and realise the breadth of career opportunities that exist. There is a plethora of courses and careers involving Science and Mathematics. So let’s start talking with our students about the opportunities and encourage them to explore their futures in these exciting fields. With belief in themselves they can embark upon a successful and bright future as strong young female scientists.

Year 11 Chinese went to a local Chinese restaurant for lunch in Patterson Road.

Although it is not first time for them to have Chinese food, ordering in Chinese

language is the first trial for everyone.

It gave the girls an opportunity to use their language in real environment and

boost their confidence of communicating in Chinese. It is an enriching language

and culture learning experience.
