Introduction
• Practices are building blocks that coaching year depends upon • Practices mold the team ie. Edmonton, Boston, Minnesota,
Pittsburgh, Chicago • Beware of too many things to do • In developing a certain skill or a specific tactic, in playing
a certain style, a) it must be taught b) it must be broken up into parts c) it must be presented progressively
I Progression in one particular session
• determined sequence: follow overall practice sequence:
warm up, goalie warm up, team tactics, individual tactics
Or warm up, learning, break (shooting and skills), follow up, flow drill, competition
• follow up 'drill rotation *players see it more than once
*focus on: 02771.11;We7c77:577.71
f - breakci t-down, develop itapply-it-to r cgame-S-ituatrons
--elf -c-hange of speed a) dressing room theory and illustration b) warm-up: stance, upper body, lower body, leg push, leg speed c) skill itself: what are they to do? How will it work? d) simple drill e) flow drill with 2-3 skaters f) game situation
*vary the starting point -from a shoot in -from a face-off -from a recovery
*work different zones -work your way up or back it up,
possession gained or lost
note: *work desired patterns
• When not executing, stop and return to original drill • Tf-too-pat:CEFilird71-drop_it/ 4,c!,tlay2i4ith-a-lw7drills_fon-3-practices_and7Pbase

II Progression in a particular segment
• weakness in individual skill or team weakness ex. too many 2 on l's, breakouts, little movement in NZ
• determine cause ex. too many 2 on l's - improper pinching
- no support - 3rd man in slot
• theory: pinching *chalk talk before practice, after game (set up next
practice), home work 'when to pinch? when not to? eforechecking system, offensive system "not only defenceman's considerations: 3-4 players
involved
• necessary skills *changes of direction *pivots 'timing *puck protection *hitting, pinning, blocking "picking up puck on boards 'change of speed 'head on a swivel
• segments 1st practice
'skating skills 'skating specific to areas *1<->1 01<->1 (read and react) *2<->() 4,2<->1 (support), 3<->2
2nd practice *review skating 01<->1 02<->1 support 'new drill : 3rd man high
3rd practice '2<->1 support *3<->3 *3<->4
a)near side pinch blfar side pinch
4th practice '3<->3, 3<->4 *4<->5 *5<->5
5th practice *progress to another zone

III Progression over a period of weeks or months
"desired strengths: Minnesota's neutral ice checking Oilers backchecking Chicago's forechecking Pittsburgh's blue line strategies Soviet regroups
"break it down from strategies to tactics to skills and work back up from simple basic elements to more complex
'considerations -explain to players -illustrate it, show it: diagrams, videos, games -determine necessary skills -work it in
'variations in progression
no puck -> puck static -> motion no resistance -> resistance - pressure slow -> fast set plays -> options small area -> many zones relaxed -> pressure principles -> specifics one player -> many skaters simple -> complex
"example: getting defencemen in the attack. 'skills: turn-ups
passing on the move pass reception
'tactics: give and go's, filling lane "strategies
-specific break outs -forechecking system -neutral zone support
