DRAG ME AWAYWILD HORSES COULDN’T

Unless you’re a true horse afficianado, your firstthought at the mention of wild horses may be thetitle of the famous Rolling Stones’ song. However,as Cloud: Challenge of the Stallions reveals, these magnificent animals also have a story of tri-umph and heartbreak that everyone can relate to.In the season premiere of Nature, filmmaker Gin-ger Kathrens brings viewers the latest look atCloud, a white stallion whose life she has chron-icled on film since his birth in the wild in 1995.Surviving the sometimes brutal conditions of theRockies, the predatory attacks of mountain lionsthat hunt young foals and the challenges of bach-elor stallions trying to steal his mares, Cloud com-mands the largest band of wild horses in theArrowhead Mountains of Montana.

DOCTOR AWAYKEEPS THE

ANAPPLEA DAY

Famous as the source of Eve’s temptation inthe Bible and also praised for its health ben-efits with the well known phrase “An apple aday keeps the doctor away,” the apple holdsan interesting place in history. The Botanyof Desire, based on Michael Pollan’s best-selling book, takes viewers on an eye-open-ing exploration of how the apple, along withthe tulip, marijuana and the potato evolvedto satisfy humankind’s most basic desiresfor sweetness, beauty, intoxication and control and how humans are intricatelywoven into the web of nature, not standingoutside it.

On Monday, October 5, GPB will welcome an exciting new series of shortprograms which help to prepare children for a global future by teachingworld languages and cultures. Slangman’s World is lead by Slangman(a.k.a. David Burke) – a live-action, quirky, fun-loving wizard and inventorwho interacts with the animated characters and kids at home to encour-age them to participate in each learning adventure. In Slangman’s en-chanted multicultural house, each character serves a specific function tohelp children broaden their language skills and their view of the world.Children will love Wordy, the language dictionary who dreams of fillinghis pages with words from other languages so that he can take his placein the Great Hall of Books. Wordy is also joined by Gizma, a resourceful girl robot and Crash, a thrill-seeking bird who delivers theword of the day.

Slangman’s World will air in between regularly scheduled children’s pro-grams in GPB’s daily program lineup.

The program is currently airing in over 170 countries over the AmericanForces Network (AFN) with a goal of helping military families integrateinto their new environments overseas.

The show stars David Burke, who became known as “Slangman” fromhis 6-year regular radio spot on Voice of America. Burke has authoredninety books on language. He penned both a series of books introducingchildren to world languages through fairytales that start in English andmorph into a different language, and also a collection of books teachingslang terms and idioms to adult nonnative speakers of English. Slang-man’s books are distributed throughout the world and are an integral part

of the language curriculum at UCLA, as well as Berlitz International. Burke not only performsas host of the show, he also does the voices of allof the characters for Slangman’s World. Additionally,Burke writes the score, songs, and lyrics for eachepisode. “Music is an integral part of our show,” explainsBurke. “Our goal is to make sure that kids have fun asthey sing in different languages. But we adults will knowthe truth – that the kids are actually learning!”

The Slangman’s World show is produced all under one roof at Veritas Studios in Los Angeles. The show is being produced by David Burke,Kenny Gage, and Timothy Michael Harrington. Veritas partner, Andrew Pa-gana, is directing. The show’s animation team boasts previous stays atNickelodeon, Klasky-Csupo, Disney, and Warner Bros. Slangman’s Worldis a timely project given that the U.S. Department of Education is focusingits efforts on the National Security Language Initiative whose goal is to increase the number of American children fluent in foreign languages.
