I’ve heard many pleas for help regarding our metal roofing. I was in the metal roofing

business for twelve years, so let me clarify a few facts. The information from Pulte is

that the material comes from multiple sources. From my observation, home owners

have a 1 1/2 inch high galvanized steel standing seam if it covers the front porch or a 1

inch high galvanized steel standing seam if it covers a narrow overhang. Whether it

was painted at the factory or in the field is anybody’s guess. Galvanized steel should

NEVER be painted with latex paint. The paint will fall off; the galvanized coating will

literally wash away; and the steel will rust! If your metal roof looks good now, I can only hope it was painted

with an oil-based paint for metal surfaces or painted at the factory. If the paint has lost its luster, rough up

the surface with some very fine steel wool and paint with a good quality oil-based metal paint. The finish may

still fall off, but at least you tried. If the material looks as if rust is bleeding through or worse, sanding and

painting will last about six months. Plan on repeating. Replacing the metal roofing is your last option. A resi-

dential roofer who only does metal roofing on occasion will usually charge higher fees. I’m working on getting

more information, but it will take time. Call me, and I will keep you in the loop. The November ARC meeting

will be on the 11th. George Lewers, ARC Chairperson, 770-845-6083.

Pickleball prattle Congratulations to the Fall Tournament champions Cyndi Hale (fun division) and Jim Hyne (competitive divi-sion). Twenty-four players enjoyed the competition in the four-day tournament. In the Fun division, the four who were vying for the title of Champion were Gene Anderson, Cyndi Hale, Tom Mathson, and Tery Wilcox-son. The four finalists in the Competitive bracket were Paul Frates, Bill Hale, Jim Hyne, and David Steward. Tremendous thanks to Paul Frates for his hours of dedication as Tournament Director.

DWLO hosted a tournament with pickleballers from DW Sun City Peachtree on October 7th. Six teams from each DW location squared off for bragging rights. Unfortunately, the only ten minutes of rain that we’ve had in the last 9 weeks was enough to wet the courts and cut the tournament short. A rematch is certain. We were proud to be able to host the event with ease on our expanded number of courts.

Please plan to come to the final Pickleball Club breakfast of the year on November 5th. The Club will be do-

nating half of its cash surplus to the Greene County Empty Stocking Fund. So come and eat with a purpose.

Tickets will be on sale through November 2nd at the Clubhouse.

Table Tennis

The table tennis group held a social on October 18th at the clubhouse with great food and a fun time for all. A big thank you to Paul Schwenzfeier for organizing the event.

If you are an experienced table tennis player or beginner, come join us on Tuesdays and Fridays

starting at 12:30pm in the MPR2.

November 9th.

DWLO VETERANS CLUB Recently the Del Webb Lake Oconee Veterans Club delivered a 55 inch Vizio Smart TV to The Georgia War Veter-ans Home in Milledgeville, GA. They also delivered two pocket talkers. The price of these items came to a little over $800. At the same time, they also delivered exercise equipment donated to the Club for the Home.

The two pictures show Veterans Mark Davis and Richard Rardin delivering these items. In one of these pictures is Dennis Mize, Executive Director of the Georgia War Veterans Home.

The Veterans Club has been working with the Home through donations com-ing from the Club's fundraisers and residents in our community. They great-ly appreciate the Club's help and donations.

It features brilliant voice impressions of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Frankie Valli, John Denver, Barry Manilow, Jimmy Buffett, Steve Perry, Paul McCartney, and many more. Conner has performed at DWLO three times previously (2007, 20013, and 2014) and received rave reviews. He is our number one most requested performer! Tickets are $14 per person. Thursday, November 24th Thanksgiving Day All Day

The clubhouse is closed in observance of Thanksgiving so that our employees can enjoy their families on this very special day. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on life and give thanks for what we have. Personally, in the nine months I’ve been at DWLO, I’ve grown forever grateful for not only a position that I truly love and am passionate about, but to be surrounded by so many smiling faces on a daily basis. The employees, security personnel and property owners here at Del Webb Lake Oconee are something very special and I am so grateful that I get to come here everyday to share it with you all. I hope that everyone enjoys their time with families, friends, and pets. Not everyone has somewhere to go on Thanksgiving. I encourage you to reach out to those people so that they, too, can enjoy this wonderful time in good company. Thank you all. Happy Thanksgiving! -Becky

Lifestyle with Becky As I write this at the last week of October, there is still lots of commotion and excitement in the air. This

month has been, by far, the busiest month since I’ve been here. From baking blueberry pies with Keturah

Lee to spooky night activities at the clubhouse, it has been especially fun.

The friendly folks at Greensboro Tire were very generous with their time early this month. The team came

out to provide free check-ups on all our cars, trucks and golf carts. Thank you so much, Greensboro Tire!

Funny man, Cary Long entertained us with his hysterical comedy act. He had his audience ripping and roar-

ing.

Oktoberfest was the place to be mid-October. This amazing event committee missed no detail in planning

the evening. From a ten-piece polka band to accordions to dancing and drinking… they covered it all. The

singing was perfectly awful, just the way a good drunken German song should be. Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke,

hoi, hoi, hoi!

When you have an event where several of your vendors will be outside on the lawn, there is one thing you

hope doesn’t happen, rain. Well, lucky for us, no rain at the Fall Arts & Crafts Festival this year. However,

the wind nearly sent tents airborne and the sprinklers set off as vendors were bringing out tables. So most of

the vendors squeezed inside which made for a super fun and cozy indoor event. Lots of vendors from all

over the state with all sorts of handmade merchandise attended. We had pottery and woodworking, jewelry

and keychains, purses and linens, cards and book signings… you name it, we had it. On the front portico the

band, Pullin’ Strings, weathered the wind and put on a wonderful show. Amazingly creative decorated

pumpkins filled the walkway. Passersby voted and winners were announced. All were wonderful!

Theater on the Lake performed their ooky spooky radio play, The Horror of Dead Lake. One part spooky and

two parts funny created a perfect recipe for the talented cast and directors. One never knows what’s lurking

in the depths of the lake and, apparently, the men’s restroom at the pavilion. Thank you, cast and crew, for

two wonderfully entertaining shows.

Super heroes, bumble bees, dancing twins, and angel wings filled the MPR during the 2016 Halloween Party.

Prizes were given for best costumes and for the scavenger hunt preceding the party. We danced the night

away with energizing tunes of Classic City Soul. Decorations were over the top amazing. Thank you to the

committee for all their hard work.

Our first ever Lick-or-Treat Dog Parade was so much fun. With a total of eight carts in the parade and a doz-

en pups, we set off into the neighborhood. Folks met us outside with treats and their own pooches. Lots of

laughs and smiles were had by all.

Hard to believe it’s fall with all this hot, dry weather, but it is true that the holidays are right around the cor-

ner. Just remember, the little things in life are what make it so grand. Don’t forget to smell the roses along

the way and savor the moments.

See you around!

-Becky

Indoor Pool Research In an effort to address the problems a few individuals were having with a rash developing after swimming in the indoor pool, we had the water tested by several different entities (The Greene County Health Department, Halloran Pool Chemical Company, Juturna Water and Path Con Laboratories) to see what might be the cause. They tested for everything including biological agents such as bacteria to look for a cause. All the tests came back in the normal range with the exception of the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) being extremely high. This was in direct correlation to the hardness of our source water and the high calcium level. Once all the test results were in, the decision was made to drain the indoor pool and clean it thoroughly to get rid of the excess TDS. The sand in the filters was also replaced. At the same time, we installed a water softener to remove the calcium in the source water BEFORE it got into the pools. The indoor pool was then refilled with water that had the calcium removed by the water softener. In addition, this action will hopefully help keep the heaters from corroding due to the excessive calcium in the water. Architectural Review Committee Seeks Candidates Del Webb at Lake Oconee HOA Board of Directors (BOD) would like to fill positions on the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). The ARC is made up of five residents (5) appointed by the BOD serving in an advisory capacity to the BOD and the HOA management as the hearing tribunal of the Association for addressing matters relating to community standards, to provide an internal method to review and approval of resident applications for exterior home/landscape modifications in accordance with the Association's Design Guidelines, other governing documents and the developer's right to veto actions that may be determined to be in conflict with the community standard. All candidates interested in serving on the committee should have access to a home computer with an actively working email address. You must also be a full time resident to serve on a committee. Any resident who would like to be considered for the ARC may submit his/her resume and/or letter of interest to the Community Association Manager's office. Community Happenings

DEL WEBB at LAKE OCONEE (DWLO) CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CAC) MEETING MINUTES, OCTOBER 4, 2016

Chairman Jerry Holland opened the meeting at 10:03 AM. In attendance: Regina Lewers, Vice-Chair; Gerri Iacoboni, Secretary; Gayle Eicher, Director-at-Large; Becky White, Lifestyle Director (LD); and Ruth Ann Hendrix, Community Association Manager (CAM). Absent: John Mishkula, Community Comments Director.

Meeting Minutes: The September meeting minutes were approved by email in advance of the October meeting.

Boat Slip Reservation System: The system will remain as is for now; however, the CAC, CAM and front desk staff will review a web-based system for possible future implementation.

Lifestyle & Community Growth: As the DWLO community continues to grow and amenities remain generally fixed, the LD and CAC will conduct ongoing discussions on the plan for amenity use. The LD surveyed other Del Webb facilities throughout the US of similar size regarding handling of “growing pains” and facility usage. One common policy was that residents are accommodated first and guests are allowed at events on a case-by-case basis. The CAC and LD will continue amenity usage discussions and adapt policy as growth dictates.

Comment Cards: Regarding a request for expanded swimming pool hours for children, CAC formulated its rec-ommendation to be forwarded to the Homeowners Association Board of Directors (HOA BOD). Once the BOD has ruled, the CAC will publish the ruling to the resident community.

Yard Sales: Yard sales are not held at DWLO. Residents wanting to sell items are encouraged to investigate the use of internet sales venues or to join other local community/church yard sales.

Pet Interest Group: CAC and the LD will solicit interest from the community in November.

HOA BOD Meeting: The DWLO HOA BOD will hold its next meeting on October 19 and Mr. Holland will pre-sent an overview of CAC’s accomplishments for the past quarter.

The next CAC business meeting is Monday, November 7 at 10:00 AM.

There being no further business, Mr. Holland adjourned the meeting at 11:50 AM.

History of the DWLO Mailbox Flags

In November you will again see “Old Glory” flying from our mail boxes as we celebrate Veterans Day. For residents who have lived here since 2009 when the flags first appeared, you are used to seeing this beautiful sight which happens four times a year-Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day. Next year we will add 9/11. The American flag provides us with a spirit of unity and patriotism. You may ask yourself, how did this happen? Here is “the rest of the story” as several residents remember. Sandy Boyd noticed flags at Harbor Club and brought the idea to Del Webb. The veterans group, headed by Henry Jackson, and the HOA were approached by Sandy and her husband Larry for support. The first flags were attached to the mail box post with zip ties. In 2010, approval was given and funds provided by the RSC to construct perma-nent holders. Veterans Tom Richardson and Larry Vescuso came up with the current holder. As the community grew, a new group of veterans became involved to support the purchase of material, making the blocks and placement of the holders. Leo Wiesler, Jim Heenan and Mark Davis were involved at this point. The flags are displayed two days before a holiday and two days after except for 9/11 which will be for that one day. In 2015, a new situation developed. Rules from the USPS stated that new homes in communities like ours could no longer have individual mail boxes. This included Branch Creek Way. We overcame this by placing flags in the ground at the end of the drive. Residents currently involved with placing and removing the flags: Sandy Boyd and Kathy Benson Upper Vistas Richard Edmondson and Rich Noble Branch Creek Way Karl & Diana Peper, Harold Stryker and Bill McLean Villas Mark and Martha Davis Valley Vistas Earl Johnson and Dan Eicher Valley Vistas John and Bonnie Gregor Valley Vistas Tom Carroll Overlook Lanse Leach New Overlook Jerry Holland, K.G. Klinck, John Dietrich and Del Doe manufactured the most recent batch of flag holders. When the flags appear on November 9th, please enjoy the display and appreciate the efforts of the people that made this happen. Also thank the Veterans Club for continuing this worthy project. If you have an issue with your flag holder, contact your resident representative or K.G. Klinck at 309-368-9698.

The Del Webb Christmas Variety Program Thursday, December 1st – 7:00 pm

Will you be a part of the program this year? It is time to start thinking about something you can share this year in the Christmas Variety Program. Since last Christmas a lot of people have moved into our community, and many of these are very talented. The Christmas program is an opportunity for all Del Webbers to come together and share their gifts. Whether it is a story, a remembrance, a Christmas reading, a skit, a song or an instrumental solo you are encouraged to come and be a part of the celebration. It can be secular, religious, humorous or serious. Del Webbers love to hear from other Del Webbers. Plan to take part this year. Contact Gene Anderson at [email protected] or Gary Walker at [email protected] and let them know what you would like to share.

The Stampin’ Scrappers teamed up with the Veterans Club to make cards for the gentlemen & ladies in the Veterans home in Milledgeville. We made 250 patriotic cards, and the veterans wrote personal messag-es in each card. They will be distributed the second week in November in honor of Veterans Day. We thanks these ladies and gentlemen for their service to our country.

On another note....Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up, and we are going to be busy making wonderful cards for these events. We ex-tend an invitation to all Del Webbers, old and new, to come and join in the fun, learn a new craft and have a laugh doing it.

Scrappers meet every Tuesday morning 9am - 12pm.

U.S. Veteran of the Month

Larry Dugger Sp 5, US Amry 1968-1971

Larry was promoted to Specialist 5th class after graduation from training as a HAWK anti-aircraft missile and launcher technician. In this role he was responsible for per-forming and overseeing all electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic system

maintenance. He also specialized in setup of missile navigation and guidance systems.

He served on missile sites in Key West, Florida, and Ansbach, Germany. Both missile sites were kept in a very high state of readiness. The Florida site was less than 90 miles from Cuba, and the site in Germany protected the German – Czechoslovakian border after the Soviet Union invaded in August 1968. Aircraft incursions occurred frequently. In a number of instances, actual missile firing was averted when the incoming aircraft aborted with only seconds to spare.

When asked how his military experience affected his later life, Larry stated, “The experience fundamentally changed

my life.” He went on to say that living abroad gave him coping skills and an appreciation of other cultures that mo-

tivated him to seek out opportunities for international work and to broaden his family’s experience. Although Larry

spent only time on active Army tour the bulk of his 40 year career in nuclear power in a military-like setting at the

Institute of Nuclear Power Operations. The institute was formed to promote excellence in commercial nuclear plant

operations and is staffed by senior officers from the Navy nuclear power program.

At INPO, Larry was instrumental in forming most of the fundamental programs in

use at INPO today and led over 70 major plant inspection and event investigation

teams domestically and abroad. In 1991, he spent a year in Bulgaria as the U.S. rep-

resentative on an international team sent to improve nuclear safety of the Russian

designed reactors.

Travel Club Visit to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit at Conyers Wednesday October 12.

“Some Days are Diamonds,” and this day was one of them. A small group of ten from the Travel Club took off from Del Webb to enjoy the beauty and history of one of the most exquisite places in Georgia. I imagined the Monastery to be a grim austere building, and was wonderfully surprised to arrive at the shining white Monastic Heritage Center to see the inviting entrance to the Abbey Store and to walk the accessible prayer walk to the Abbey Church taking in the beautiful surroundings. We arrived in time for the 12:15pm service, and for 15 minutes we refreshed our souls with silence and prayer, watching venerable Monks assemble to perform their solemn rites. After the service, we felt integrated with the life of the Monastery, and more so as we watched a vivid colorful video at the Visitor Center about the life of the Monks and the restoration of the Monastery. I should mention the brilliant sparkling available rest rooms – the Monks can be justly proud of the facilities provided for visitors. Everyone in our group of ten brought a packed lunch, and we carefully made our way down a woodland path to the lake where picnic tables were provided – we were happy and relaxed as we ate, watched enviously by colorful ducks and geese. After lunch there was time for a quick whirl through the Museum, a fascinated look at the avenue of Bonsai trees, and a final call at the Abbey Store. I was very impressed by the quality gifts available, and I imagined hard working Monks working diligently in their clois-tered cells making the beautiful filigree angels and paintings – it wasn’t until I turned over a filigree angel to find the price that I saw it was ‘made in China’ – I must modernize my imagination.
