Small boy of 6 asked if he would like to see the dear little baby sister

just brought by a stork, “No! But I would like to see the stork!”

Small boy of 8 kept peeping into his mother‟s room shortly before arrival

of No 2 baby, could never be induced after to go right into room to kiss

his mother. “Why won‟t you come to kiss me darling? Small boy, “I don‟t

A father anxious to have his rather excentric son shut up for a time

Mrs. Weedon Grossmith at home 4 - 7. In all day working. Roy & Maud

returned from Mrs. Cohens. They enjoyed Mrs. Raeffle‟s dance v. much

last evg. Slept at Mrs. Cohen‟s, who drove them to the meet of Queen‟s

Hounds, Holyport & after to Windsor where they lunched. Miss Rose

Innes came in about tea time. Lin only had subject for drawing v. late. X.

Wire fr. Hamilton Fletcher. Tabbie had another little son born last

evening.

Saturday 2 January

Lin & I go to Jessie‟s, Gt. Bromley Lodge nr Colchester, at 3.32. Lin so

busy unable to go till tomorrow.

Sunday 3 January

Poor Annie died 10.50 PM. V. grieved I did not go or send sh‟ll bitterly

regret this to my last day. Edgar & Sophy to lunch unexpectedly. V.

worried about poor Annie but why did I not send or go. Regrets useless.

Ought to have influenced Edgar who w‟d have done anything but for me.

Lin & I came to Jessie‟s by 3.40 fr. Liverpool St. Sta. Met Ethel Edwin

there who travelled with us to Ardleigh, Essex, Gt. Bromley Lodge.

Hamilton, Midge & dora looking well, charming house.

Monday 4 January

Midge & self sent off last £5 to Cap‟t Powell, alas too late for the one we

should have helped. Midge & self drove to Ardleigh & met boy with

telegram saying poor Annie passed away last evg. Dear Lin‟s birthday.

Lin & Hamilton out shooting with Mr Unwin all day long. H, Lin, Ethel, D,

played 5s on billiard table. I played once altho‟ v. sad at heart to please

Lin & H, & cracked amethyst in my ring & lost stone.

Tuesday 5 January

Hamilton left for some sale (illeg) north. Pouring wet morg. After lunch

we all walked part of way to Ardleigh. Lin left us at Ivy Cottage. Rev Mr

Mrs. & Miss Graham to tea. V. funny clergyman told queer little stories!

Lent him my book. X. Petit ami.

Wednesday 6 January

V. wet. After luncheon walked part of way with Lin to (blank). Lin, Midge,

D. & Ethel drove to Colchester then Lin returned home. I stayed in bed to

breakfast. In all afternoon.

Thursday 7 January

Ethel & Mervyn arrived at luncheon time. Sat & talked all afternoon, too

cold & wet to go out. Hamilton returned late afternoon & found us all in

drawing room. Ethel Edwin sang. Terrible circumstances surrounding

poor Annie‟s death feel most bitterly I did not go to her as I ought to

have done. It is all so awful I shall regret it every day of my life. Long

letters fr. dear Lin & Maud. In bed to breakfast.

Friday 8 January

Poor Annie buried today at St Peter‟s Thanet. Edgar went & saw it all.

Pouring wet day, only trust he has not taken cold. Mervyn & Ethel here.

Dear letters fr. Lin & Maud. Ham to Mr Unwin‟s to play billiards

afternoon. Ethel & Dora to see Brass at church here.

Dear Lin left for Col. Lucas‟. Easton Park Wickham Market Suffolk. Dull

day. Had walk morg. with Dickie & Midge. Dora & Ethel to Colchester on

their cycles. Long letter from Edgar. Midge & self drove Lin to Ardleigh

& called on a Mr & Mrs. Barton after.

Tuesday 12 January

Dull & raining. To tea at the Rectory, met Mrs. Unwin pretty little woman

about 30.

Wednesday 13 January

Ham, Midge & Ethel left about 11, Ethel for home. M. & H. to stay 2

nights at the Frisby‟s. Wretched day. Read to D. Could not go out.

Thursday 14 January

D. & self for walk. Caught in rain. Roy arrived in time for lunch. D. & self

played 5‟s after with Roy & then walked with him to Mr Unwin‟s where he

remained playing billiards until 6 o‟c. Dined & played 5‟s & to bed at 10

o‟c. Finished reading Conan Doyle‟s book “Rodney Stone”. V. exciting

but most improbable which makes me feel disappointed with the whole.

Friday 15 January

Lovely bright sunny morning, hard frost. Roy off to shoot with Mr Unwin,

a more helpless creature with a gun I never saw, & like dear Lin has

absolutely no idea of time. Midge & H. return. V. worried to know what to

do about evg. with Miss Innes as we are already engaged for Monday.

Saturday 16 January

Ham out shooting with Mr Hanbury all day. Midge D. & self drove to

Colchester. V. cold. Went over castle with D, v. interesting, & the

museum. Also looked over some curio shops.

Sunday 17 January

Ground thickly covered with snow. Roy, D. & self out morg. Letters fr.

Lin & (blank).

Monday 18 January

Return home. Go tomorrow instead. Country all covered in snow. All

went for long walk morg. Lovely crisp snow. To tea at Mrs. Unwin‟s. V.

pretty house & daintily arranged tea. Roy & H. & Mr Unwin played

billiards. Mr Graham (rector) & dau. there.

Tuesday 19 January

Asked Miss Rose Innes to dine. Cannot come. Roy & I returned from

Midge‟s, Ardleigh Essex. Arrived at 3.15. Mrs. Sanson, Ellie Ritchie, Eve

C, Miss Rose Innes, Mr & Miss Rubens, Pat a‟Beckett, Blanche Cole &

May Nembhard called. Quiet evg. Lin & Roy off to theatre after dinner.

No signs of snow in London.


Mrs. Critchett‟s dance. Maud & self walked to Whiteleys & back. Most

bitterly cold & horrid, pd. Whiteleys bill 3/1. Ordered lamp shade, brush

& small ham, 2 cods kip‟d roe. Met Miss Webster at Barkers, bought

brilliantine 1/8. Roy very rude at breakfast. Roy & Maud enjoyed Mrs. C‟s

dance v. much.

Thursday 21 January

Mrs. de la Rue‟s dance 9 to 12.30. Roy returns to Eton. Dark cold day,

sleet on houses. Roy to club morg. Lin took M. to de la R‟s. Very

pleasant little dance & all over at 12.30.

Friday 22 January

Windows? Prof Dewar‟s lecture on (illeg) air at Royal Institution. Unable

to go. Maud & I dine with Mr Carlisle & go to see the “Circus Girl” with

him after. Out alone morning for walk to Mrs. Vicat Cole‟s, nearly

perished with cold. Maud in bed to breakfast. Rested after lunch. V. bad

dinner at Grand. Mr Watts, Mr C. & own two selves & went in 2 hansoms

to Gaiety after. M. & self together, awfully nervous so slippery. Most

cheery delightful play “The Circus Girl” & very strong cast enjoyed it

immensely but not la société des Messieurs. Mr W. v. good in hunting up

cabs for us, had to take hansom home, not a 4 wheeler to be had. V. glad

of supper here on return.

Saturday 23 January

Bitterly cold bright day high wind. Snow on ground. Cannot find latch

key. Maud left it in drawing room last evg. on our return fr. theatre. Did

liquors after breakfast with me an hour. Snow storm on & off all

afternoon. Unable to get out all day.

Sunday 24 January

Bitterly cold. Lin to Calais for day. Home an hour late on ac‟t of snow

storm. Met the Spofforths going across. Maud & self to early service,

met Eve C. & walked after to top of Row. Hear of young Webster‟s

engagement poor fool & wonder if marriage will make him saner.

Spencer to luncheon & remained on till 7 o‟c. Poor Annie‟s two sons fr.

Australia turned up. Midge‟s prophecy came true. Wonder how Edgar

will like this!!! Another cold & tight feeling on my chest. Found latch key

in my own purse!!!

Monday 25 January

Mrs. Reynard‟s dinner party 8 o‟c. Refused. Lin, Maud & self dine with

Miss Rose Innes & party at Bristol & go with her to see “The Circus Girl”

after. Lovely bright morg. Maud to lunch with Miss Innes at 12.15. Mon.

de Martel arrived last evening at Miss Innes‟s. Delightful evening. Mr

Kelly, Bret Harte, Mrs. Joyce, Mr & Mrs. Rose Innes, Mon. de Martel, Mr &

Mrs. Dewar, Mr Gilmer, Mr Orlebar & our 3 selves & Miss Rose Innes &

one other I forget name of Madame (blank) Chilean beauty, & had 2 large

boxes thrown into one. My cold & cough v. bad & feel so feverish.

Tuesday 26 January

Maud to lunch with Miss Rose Innes, to pictures after, here to tea with

Mon. de Martel & Miss Innes. Mrs. & Miss Whitworth, Misses Biddington,

Miss Burgess, Ethel Grigg, Miss Hansen Walker, Evelyn, Jessie Harding,

Olive Cotton & Marion Pollack called. Maud with Lin to Mrs. Mocatta‟s

dance, enjoyed it v. much.


Mrs. Colin Hunter‟s dance 9.30. Maud to dine with Miss Rose Innes at

Bristol & Winnie Lockyer, large party. On after to “Geisha” & from there

to Savoy to supper!!! Lin went after Punch dinner to Mrs. Colin Hunter‟s

but only stayed 10 minutes as every one was leaving. I called at 3.30 on

Mrs. du Maurier, enquired after Dr Hudson, Mrs. Critchett & May

Burnand, saw Charlie Jack! & Frank. Had long talk with May who was

looking v. smart & handsome. Walked morning alone round Round

Pond, met Mrs. Phipson Beale & walked back with her, she showed me

over her house.

Thursday 28 January

Miss Rose Innes dinner. Mrs. Wirgman 4-7, music. Maud & Winnie

Lockyer (who slept here last evening) lunched with Miss Rose Innes &

went to Pantomime after. Maud to dinner at Mrs. Enthoven‟s. I walked

with Maud morg. to de Vere Gds & to Round Pond, watched skaters.

Spencer to luncheon & went with me at 3.30 to Edgar‟s club, out, & to

Clayton & Bell‟s 311 Regent St. to see window to dear Parents memory,

delighted with it, colour v. good. Sp. left me, met H. Power & went on to

see their new flat, most charming. To Wirgmanns, saw Miss Gilbert,

Parsons, Armstead, Mrs. Pitt & sister & Mr Dicksie. Lin to Zoo to see

lions for next week‟s drawing. Maud v. merry on return fr. pantomime &

danced away until she went to dress, mimicing one & another. Mr Penn

sent us 3 pheasants, arrived today.

Friday 29 January

Mrs. Walkes‟ dinner ¼ to 8. V. bright & cold. Maud off at 10.15 to Miss

Innes & to Cambridge for day to show the Vicomte the colleges. Saw

very dirty char woman recommended by Blanche Cole! V. untidy person.

V. pleasant dinner of 12 at Mrs. W‟s!!! Only their own 2 maids & an old

servant waited & did it well. Lady Monckton, Sir D. Straight, Heilbutts,

Mrs. Ben Webster, Mr Hurst, Ian Forbes Robertson etc. Mrs. Ian R. & Mr

Hurst asked to call.

Saturday 30 January

Dinner of 8. Miss Rose Innes, Vicomte de Martel, Mrs. Geiger, Mr Rooth,

Mr Jacomb Hood. Out morg. shops. Mr Rooth engaged to Miss

Tattersall, seemed quiet & not in his usual spirits. Mons de Martel v.

intelligent man. Generally a quiet evg. Moody to wait. Caviare, soup,

soles in white sauce, mushrooms on Lyons sausage. Roast mutton, vegt

& spinach, new potatoes, cauliflowers apart. Pheasants stuffed with

chestnuts & salad. Plum pud, meringues, soft herring savory.

Sunday 31 January

X. Petit ami. In bed to breakfast. Eve & M. to early service. Horrid day.

Lin to Club. Mr Watts, Mr Carlisle, Mr Severn & dau. Mrs. Ian Robetson v.

gushing, & Mr Gilmer. Quiet evg. alone.

Monday 1 February

Midge & H. arrived 12.30, off directly after lunch to see houses. Horrid

day. Lin in all day.

Tuesday 2 February

V. dark dull day. Midge & H. off early to see over (blank). Lin to Calais all

day. Horrid wet day. Mr Palgrave Simpson, Miss Clifford & Miss Rose

Innes called. Used drawing room.

Wednesday 3 February

Mrs. Boughton at home 4.30, music. Drove alone at 12 round Park.

Midge & H. to see over houses. Emma remained in & we dined at 7.30.

Maud to Lincoln‟s Inn Ball with Mrs. Coward & party. Met Carlisle, B.

Weigall, Mr Gribble, Coupé, etc. etc.

Thursday 4 February

Maud to dine at Mrs. McQueen‟s at 7 o‟c & go after to see Olivia. Box for

Palace. Midge & self to see over 2 houses in Cranley Gds. Walked home.

Rested after lunch. Lin, Ham, Midge & self to “Palace”. V. good

performance, dogs so clever & 2 Americans v. good, & 2 girls v. good.

Also Russian singers and dancers most original. Saw Sir A. Hickman,

Mrs. Lindsay Hammond & Pinero & Dr Lennox Browne here. Maud

enjoyed her evg. v. much also. Letter fr. Mr Smith about the money

accruing fr. poor Annie‟s annuity. £940.0.0 something.

Windows. Tea at Mrs. Galbraith Senr. Maud dines with Miss Rose Innes

& after to Prof Dewar‟s lecture Royal Institution. Pouring wet day. Midge

& H. to see over Craven Hill Gds again. Maud in bed with cold.

Saturday 6 February

Out walk morg. shops. To matinee “Terrys” with M. & Lin. “The

Eiderdown Quilt”. V. amusing. Lin joined us later. Bought 2 lbs new

potatoes 10d & bunch of tulips at Butts, pd for them.

Sunday 7 February

To early service with M. M. to communion. Up to Hyde Pk. Corner &

back. Sp. called. Mr Richards, Mr Gribble, Mr. Orlebar, Mr. Hurst & Miss

Rose Innes called. Met Willie Buck in Park. He and Mr. Gilmer dined with

us. Lin to Calais. Do not think Willie B. improved.

Monday 8 February

To tea at Mrs. E. Pollack‟s. Mrs. Moscheles at home, 9.30. Lin walked up

morg. with Maud & self to Hyde Pk Corner. Lin lunched at his club. We

walked back. Maud & self at 3 o‟c to Mr J. McQueen‟s about Mrs.

Willard‟s book to illustrate. Most amusing interview. M. v. businesslike &

Mr. McQueen very nervous! To Mrs. Powers & to tea after at Mrs.

Pollack‟s, & I called alone on Mrs. Walker. Always feel exhausted after,

she is so excitable. Invested £100 in Ordinary Stock of Great Eastern, pd

with fee etc £114.17.4. (stock at £113.10.0.) Lin dining with Mr. W. Stone

just returned fr. abroad.

Tuesday February 9

Evelyn Maud & self for walk together. Eve to lunch & stayed afternoon.

Mrs. & Miss Leech, Mrs. F. Moore, Mrs. Hartley, Winnie, Mrs. Armstrong,

Mrs. H. Levy, Mrs. Wallace & Mr. Blair to tea & several others forgotten

names.

To tea at Miss Mackenzie‟s, 9 Rosetti Mansions Chelsea. Baby Con to

luncheon 1.30. Tea at 5 with Fritz to talk over Edgar‟s letter about

money. Cap‟t Powell written for ap‟t here but cannot manage it today.

Miss Mackenzie out. Satisfactory interview with Fritz. Wife looking

sweetly pretty & Baby dear little thing. Mr. Paxton to luncheon. Quietly at

home Maud & self.

Thursday 11 February

Lin Maud & self dine at Mrs. Geiger‟s, 8 o‟c. Mary Nicol arrived in time

for luncheon. Most delightful evg. at Mrs. Geiger‟s, table service & all

perfect & perfectly cooked dinner. Soup prepared with lobster in

portions of shell. 2 entrees which I did not touch. Saddle of mutton,

seakale. Wild duck & lemon & salad. Delicious lemon cream covered in

pistachio. Savory. Bertie Farquhar dined here with Mary & they went to

“Palace” together. Met Mr. & Mrs. Morris (American) & v. pretty, Cap‟t

Ruthven & Cap‟t Edgcumbe at Mrs. G‟s.

Friday 12 February

Out morg. with Mary Nicol & Maud at 11.30 in brougham. Walked up

Row, met Mr. Blair who called this morg. to ask Maud & Mary to go to

see “Betsey” tonight with him at Criterion. Also met Mr. & Mrs.

Alexander, she looking years younger & quite pretty. Drove fr. Hyde Pk.

Corner to Stores. Home at 2 o‟c. Lunched. Mary & self off after in

omnibus to Piccadilly Circus & to see Watt‟s pictures, v. interesting

collection. Met Mrs. Dietz & Mr. Molesworth‟s double, Harding. To tea at

Lyons, cheap & nasty. Home by bus & found Sylvinia Rose Innes here.

Mary & Maud off at 20 to 9 to Criterion.

Saturday 13 February

To luncheon 1 o‟c with Tabs at Coburg. Gros. Sqre. Too seedy to go.

Woke at 4 o‟c this morg. feeling very sick. Went with Maud & Mary

nevertheless to see “The White Elephant” at Comedy. Tabs, Mr. Blair &

Lin joined us there. V. amusing piece. Had talk with Tabbie about this

horrid advancement of money for Annie‟s illegitimate children. Hers very

sensible view, wish Edgar‟s were the same. Went on after Maud Mary &

self to Charbonel & Walkers to tea. Saw Coupé with Mr. & Mrs. Warre &

the Messels there. Home to quiet dinner & fearfully sleepy. M. had

another long letter fr. B. Weigal, evidently longing for her to even half

promise her hope.

Sunday 14 February

Maud & Mary to early service. For walk with Eve C. & Maud to Pk. Met

Mr. Blair & Mary & Bertie Farquhar. Saw Medleys, A. Russells etc etc. Pk.

vy crowded. Eve walked entire way home with Mr. Blair, so glad as I do

not like Maud to be seen too much in his company out of doors. Lin to

Calais for day & to dine out to meet American minister, Irving etc.

Spencer, Mr. Blair, Miss Rose Innes & Mr. Farquhar dine here, 8 o‟c. Mr.

Richardson, Miss Rose Innes & the 2 Messel boys called & stayed a long

while.

Monday 15 February

Maud lunches at Mrs. Wallace‟s. Mary Nicol fetches her at 3.30. Maud &

Mary to Bazaar at Kens. Town Hall. Mary leaves us today for Mrs.

Lawson‟s. Lin, Maud & self to see “As you like it”. V. good, saw the Taits

there.

Tuesday 16 February

Mrs. N. Cohen‟s dance & musical at home 9 o‟c. Cannot go. Bazaar town

Hall Kens. M. letter fr. P.J.B. Out at 11.30 in carriage to Ratcliffe &

Woollands, met Mrs. Joshua & Mrs. Matthews jnr. Mrs. Geiger, Alice L. &

Mary, Miss Pollack & cousin, S. Rose Innes, Lady Monckton, Mrs.

Holland, Mrs. Pitt, etc called.


Maud goes to stay night at Mrs. Richardson‟s, Streatham Hill. Lin, self,

Eve Coward, Alice Linley, Mary C, Sir J. Tenniel to Pantomime, Drury

Lane. Emma & Emilie to Pantomime evg. on my account, as Emilie goes

out so little. Wire fr. Richardsons, Baby girl arrived so M. does not go.

Maud with us instead to Pantomome. V. good. Sir J.T. did not turn up.

Alice gave notice, v. good thing. Mrs. Spielmann called.


Mrs. Power‟s dinner, 8 o‟c. 24 Portland Place. Maud dines at Mrs.

McQueen‟s. Lovely day. Out alone to Stores about hair, dog, & home by

bus. Ordered stays fr. P.Robinson‟s. Lin out twice on cycle. X. M. little F

in bed to breakfast. Evelyn came & took her for walk.

Friday 19 February

Mrs. de la Rue‟s second dance 9 – 12.30. Went with Maud 12 o‟c to Miss

Ratcliffe to fit on white muslin gown. Wet. M. in bed till 11. Called alone

at 5 on Mrs. Coward, v. uncomfortable so many cats, Mrs. Gale & Miss

Neaves, & met Mrs. Hartley. Emilie took M. to Mrs. de la Rue‟s to be

chaperoned by Mrs. May Burnand.


Edgar dines here. Lin to 1st night Burnand‟s new play “His Majesty”. I

walked alone to Whiteleys, flowers 9d, ordered poker. Called at 3.30 on

Mdes Quilter, Medley, Joyce, Stebbing, Jones, Sinclair, Heilbut, Ldy

Blomfield, Mocatta, Cameron Corbett, Armstrong. Only Mrs. Mocatta &

Mrs. Corbett in. Tea at both & indigestion to follow. Lin dined out & went

after to 1st night of Burnand‟s new play “His Majesty”. V. bad. Edgar

dined here & we talked till past 12 o‟c.

Sunday 21 February

To early service. With Maud alone, & alone to Park after. Met Mr. Stone

who walked all the way with us, much to B. Weigal‟s discomfort. Lin to

Calais. Miss Muir Mackenzie, Mr. Gilmer & young Reubens to tea.

Monday 22 February

M. letter from B.W. & a very sad one fr. P.J.B. Poor Maud is pretty busy

with her lovers. Maud dines at Ellie Ritchie‟s birthday party, 8 o‟c. M. &

self for walk morg. Met young Webster & congratulated him on finding a

girl willing to marry him! Called alone at 3.30 on Mrs. Macdougal, saw

Judy, who had just ret‟d from Midge. Lady Galway there, Mrs. Macquoid.

skirt, the rows getting less towards waist, her train arranged in bow in

centre of back of white silk edged with net ruche & train falling like a

long sash fr. the center of shoulders. To Lady Lockwood‟s, blk brocade

& grey, Miss Lockwood green & pink train.


Maud dines at Mr. Sterne‟s dinner 7.45 given for Miss Tait. Maud home

fr. Ball this morg. at 3.45. V. unhappy poor child. Lenny Messel

proposed & wishes all settled in 3 weeks. Cried over it in my room. Mr.

Carlisle there & also said unmistakable things but is less unhappy in his

Dear Maud returns from Hindhead. Miss White here. Mrs. Maclean called

morg. seemed v. upset about her loss. Was v. pleased to see her again.

Sp. came & we took bus to Sloane St & shop‟d together. Changed £2 for

myself & actually spent a few shillings on myself instead of on house

where it all generally goes. Lady Seaton called & stayed some time awful

revelations about Violet Hunt. Called after on Mrs. Sutton & Lady Reed,

both in. On to fetch Maudie seems to have had a good time. Mrs. C.

Galbraith called. Long wire fr. Mr. Carlisle asking Maud & Roy to theatre

with him tomorrow evg. Already engaged unfortunately.

Dear Roy home for long leave. To matinée “Nelson‟s Enchantress” v.

pleasantly surprised Forbes Robertson excellent. Mrs. Pat Campbell‟s

voice so tiresome. Mr. Gilmer met us there. To see “Richard III” evg,

most delightful performance, never saw Irving to greater advantage. Met

E.Pollacks, Messels, & Mr Heilbutt there. Lennie looking v. devoted to M.

who was almost indifferent little monkey!

Sunday 7 March

Ethel Lindo dines here. Asked Mr. Carlisle & Mr. Hood both unable to

come. To early service with Maud. Roy to Queen‟s Club. Lin to Calais as

usual. Maud with Eve to enquire after Mrs. Galbraith 30 Lancaster Gate.

Mr. Bret Harte, Lennie Messel & Mr. Hood called. Ethel Lindo played

“Circus Girl” music. Lennie stayed nearly all afternoon & Mr. Bret Harte

a long while & was most amusing.

Maud fr. Mrs. Macquoid‟s where she dined & left Miss Mayne at Queen‟s

Gate. Cold wet night.

Maud to Miss Holland‟s & Mr. Carlisle‟s theatre party. M. dines at Miss

H‟s, 7 o‟c. Sp. called & I went for walk up Row with him. Met Mrs. Gilbert

& Mrs. Eykyn, om back. Saw stupid looking English parlourmaid. Went

at 4 to call on Mrs. Threlfall lovely house my idea of a luxurious &

beautiful house, with exquisite view of Park & facing S.W. Met Mrs.

Beale & Mrs. Fuller Maitland there. To Mrs. Hunt‟s, saw charming maid

but objected to Sunday alas! Saw Mrs. Keyser for Alice this morg. Called

Nembhard at ¼ p. 1 o‟c. Postponed. Went for walk morg. alone. Round

Pond like a sea, such a high wind blowing & bright sun for an hour.

Maud home at 3 this morg fr. dance with Ellie & her brother. M. looks a

perfect wreck. Went for walk with Eve C. V. pleasant dinner. Duchess of

Bedford, Lady Ripon, Sir G & Lady Russell, Mr. Wallop, Mr. Thring, Mr. &

Mrs. Elliot, Mr. Humphrey Ward, Lord & Lady X, Lady Rosamund, our 2

selves. I sat between Mr. Wallop & Mr. Thring & enjoyed evg. much more

than I expected. The house looks as if they were just going to pack up &

go away, not a comfortable house!

Mrs. Medley 4 – 6.30. Went alone to Westbourne Grove, walked, shop‟g.

Home in bus. X. Both Lin & self received letter allotting us all we asked

for in Apollinaris Cpy, Lin £3000, self £200. Called alone at 3.30 on

Geiger, Clarke, Rhodes, Susman, Bergne, Tattersall stayed some time, &

C. Corbett also some time. Long interesting talk on politics with Mr. C.C.

Maud hard at work all day long. Card of invitation from Mr. Bainbridge

for Maud to dine there giving her 2 evenings to choose from.

Lin & Maud went. Midge called at 7 & brought some lovely violets &

hyacinths. Stayed ½ an hour. She is staying at “The Cecil”. Lin to see

£10 shares 5% pref Appolinaris & Johannis Compy Ltd. Paid also

remaining £5 due on 2 allotted £1 shares in Harrods ord. allotted at

£3.11.0. I paid £5.18.4 for each of my other 3 shares in Harrods ordinary.

Wednesaday 24 March

Promised to go at 4.30 to Mrs. Tattersalls. Alice leaves. Maud & self dine

at Metropole at 7.45 with Mr. Carlisle & Miss Holland, & to see “La

Poupee”. V. delightful evg. quiet & amusing altho‟ I felt seedy enjoyed it

immensely. X. E. Ellis came as parlourmaid & Alice Turner leaves after 3

yrs & 4 months. Did v. well most obliging & attentive & took an interest

in her work. Sorry to lose her but her appearance especially in the

morning was greatly against her, more like a general servant. V. late

mornings & generally unpunctual & untidy.

I go to Midge at Ardleigh for a few days. Midge met me at Ardleigh

looking v. well. Place charming all spring flowers out & so warm &

delicious air. Maud met B.W. when out buying flowers, only saw her for

a second but feel anxious to hear if he worried her again to promise,

trust she did not give any hope.

with Effie as I am. No news of Con today. Lin & self to see “La Poupée”

Left Stafford Ter. just after breakfast for Grand Hotel Eastbourne.

Arrived in time for luncheon there. Found v. comfortable rooms facing

sea on 3rd floor awaiting us. Maudie looking already better for her stay

with Mrs. Macqueen‟s party here. Roy at Mr. Carlisle‟s with Mr. Flick at

Cavendish Hotel. Roy left there & came to us. Looked tired fr. his ride

down on cycle with Mr. Flick last evg. 64 miles, they arrived at 10 o‟c

leaving at 2.30. Sat with the Macqueens party after dinner. (Mr, Mrs.

McQ, Mary, a boy cousin, Mr. Mackellar & Miss Cox & Maud. X. Petit ami.

not dance with Mr. C. Spent whole afternoon with him, Mr. F. & Willie

Roy would wake up & display more energy & interest in his studies. He

seems to have but one idea, viz: to amuse himself & even this with as

Vy pleasant dinner for 14. Met Mr. Dyce‟s aunt. Went morg. shop‟g

alone. Evelyn sat to Maud & to Lin. Ellis went with Maud at 3.30 to Miss

Ratcliffe‟s & to Swears & Wells. M. finds her vy nice & quiet to go about

with, & far more respectable looking than Alice.

Evelyn, met Mackeseys, sat with them. Row v. crowded. Met Mr. Blair

returning, walked little way with us. Lin to Calais. Roy & Mr. Blair on

cycles to Richmond, both returned & dressed here. Lin in late 8.30.

Dined at ¼ to 9. E. cooked dinner wonderfully well. Young Rubens, Mr. &

Mrs. Enthoven & W. Buck called. R. played.

Mrs. Heilbut 4 to 6.30, 8 Carlos Place. Maud another snuffly cold & down

v. late. Roy & Mr. Blair at Queens Club playing tennis, came in at 7

o‟clock. Maud with me at 3.30 to Bamk, left certificate signed for

purchase of £320 L.C. & Dover 2nd Pref & have to hand over X £2.8.9 for

this on B.A.Gt. Southern share sold last month for Annie‟s children. X.

Mrs. de la Rue‟s early dance 9 to 12.30. Mrs. Heilbut 4 - 6.30, 8 Carlos

Place. Mrs. Threlfall 5 - 7. Maud dines at Mr. Bainbridge‟s & goes to St

James‟ Theatre after with his party. Roy dined at Mrs. Lindo‟s & went to

Empire after & to meet Maud at St James‟ theatre & take her on to the de

la Rue‟s. Lin & self dined at Coburg Hotel with H. & Tabs 7.30, & went on

after to Court theatre “Sweet Nancy”. V. pretty little piece. Fr. there to

dance & enjoyed it!!! Met usual set. Maud & self morg. to Tabs & sat in

Park. Mr. Blair played tennis with Roy. Sp. called morg. more

investments to recommend!!!

Mrs. Moscheles evg. party. Went at 12 to Whiteleys & to see Midge. Dora

called here morg. taller then ever! Maud long letter fr. Lennie. Maud

lunched at Coburg with Tabbie who complemented M. on her

appearance etc. Maud & Roy to Gaiety “Circus Girl” with Mr. Blair.

Mrs. Walter Crane‟s dance 9.30. Unable to go. Called at 4.15 on Joachim,

Rawlinson, Tuer, Santly, Sylvia Davies (in) pretty house & lovely things

but v. dirty, Wirgman, Mrs. Rose Innes, in, also dirty house, Parish,

Lindo, Macquoid, in, lovely & exquisitely kept house, Miss Davis where

Maud stayed to tea. Mr. P.J.B. called! M. had long letter fr. Lennie. Roy v.

merry evg. as all the Eton boys were returning. Went with Maud morg. to

Menteith Young waited ages, c‟d not see her. Met Mrs. C. Stuart Wortley

at bodice place & Mrs. Pickering at Coburg Hotel. Cab home 1/6. Mr.

Blair called.

Websters. Mrs. Medley at home. Out morg. alone to Marshall &

Snelgroves ordered grey alpaca dress, ruffle, & collar. Swears & Wells

for patterns. Cab home 1/6. Met Mr. Blair at 4 when going alone for calls,

sent Maud some lovely flowers & saw her after in school room. Am v.

vexed with Maud for receiving him alone. Called on Mdes Barker,

Galbraith, de la Rue, Shannon, Lady Hickman & Lady Lucas. Midge

found Auntie & Tabbie there. Met Mrs. Tod at Mrs. Medleys & Fagan &

Boughton.

Saturday 8 May

Maud & Roy & Mr. Blair dine at Coburg with Tabbie & go to see “Circus

Girl” again. Midge & Dora also. I went also at last moment as Tabs

unable to go. V. pleasant evg. good dinner. Only Mr. Blair, Mr. Hood,

Roy, Maud & self to theatre. V. delightful evg. Tabbie looking quite lovely

in Young gown.

Flowers. M. wept because she c‟d not go to Row. Roy out, I too tired.

Mrs. Tate‟s dance. Mrs. C. Hunter‟s dinner 8 o‟c. Went at 9.30 alone to

Miss Ratcliffe‟s by bus. Arranged about grey dress & jacket. Walked

thro‟ Park home. Bought M. pink flowerers 1/6. Rested afternoon. Midge

came to tea. Lin‟s cold v. bad. Met Mr. & Mrs. Adams (P.J.B‟s friends) Mr

& Mrs. Freeman, Mr. Ogston(?) etc etc. at Mrs. Hunter‟s. Do not like Mrs.

Adams. Went on to Mr. Hartree‟s, saw Maud & Roy there, former looking

v. pretty. Lord Kinnaird (funy little monkey man) took me in to supper.

Met Mrs. Macnaught, Mr. Stephenson, Ferguson & all the other

gentlemen of Mr. Hartree‟s party at Lords. Mr Home etc, forgotten all

their names. M. & Roy on to Mrs. Tate‟s dance. Lenny M, Mr Bainbridge,

Carlisle, Watts etc there. Maud did not enjoy it. Sat out with L.M. X. Petit

ami.

Lin‟s cold v. bad. Voice so thick. In bed till 12.30 vy tired. M. letters fr.

H.C. & Lenny. M. out morg. with Ellie, met Dolly Roberts who told M. of

her engagement to Major Barton. Drove at 4 o‟c with M, called on Bret

Harte, Threlfall, Levy, Hartree, Tate, Moscheles, Wallace, Giles,

Whitworth, Huish, Palgrave Simpson, & M. to Mrs. Coward‟s alone last.

dinner tomorrow, neither can come. Saw Nipper & Hilda Messel in Park.

Lin‟s cold vy bad. Roy & Maud to see Irving in “The Bells” both

Mr. Bret Harte to dinner 8.15. Lin to Calais notwithstanding his bad cold

& seemed none the worse & enjoyed his talk with Bret Harte at dinner.

M. with Roy to Park, met Lenny & Ruth Messel, sat together, saw B.W.

who passed Maud twice, he is always contriving to meet her. Mr. Paxton,

Arthur Linley, Mr. Stebbing, Major Barton & Dolly R. & Lenny Messel

called, & Mr. Shaw. Major B. just engaged to Dolly R, in Edgar‟s reg‟t!

Lenny spoke to me about M. & declares if he may not have her he will

leave England. Poor boy feel v. sorry for him but it cannot be thought of

for many reasons & M. does not seem to care for any of her lovers at

present. Roy out all afternoon & felt seedy evg. He smokes too much.

Ap‟t with Miss Ratcliffe at 3. M. counted washing. M. had letter fr. B.W.

apologizing for annoying her by constantly meeting her. Poor Maudie.

Went at 3.15 to fetch M. fr. Mrs. Macnaught where she lunched. To

Ratcliffe, left Pass Book at Bk. To Libertys for centre piece, Midge,

borrow her entrée dishes & candlestick. Ordered caviare, nuts etc.

X. Asked Mr. Galbraith, Mr. Bambridge, Sir H. & Lady Bergne, Sir B. &

Lady Seton & Miss Clifford. Lady Hickman at home 4 - 6.30. Maud dines

at Mrs. Meinertzhagen‟s & goes with her party to Mrs. Hankey‟s dance

Rutland Gate. Mr. Galbraith took Maud on to dance at Mrs.

Meinertzhagen‟s where Mrs. Hankey chaperoned her. Saw Fritz & wife &

Mr. Mayne. Caviare, clear soup, Turbot sharp sauce, stewed pigeons,

Roast lamb beans, asparagus, Roast chickens & salad, 2 caramel

puddings, horrid coffee ice supreme, plovers eggs, haddock savory,

cheese bis butter. Paid £3.10.0 for purchases for dinner. Edgar & Sophy

came to luncheon unexpectedly. Great hurry scurry. Mr. Hartree, Mr.

Rawlinson & Mrs. Huish called. Moody to wait & Mrs. Spring to help. M.

which makes me feel so sorry for him.

Mrs. Street at home 3.30, 24 Bryanston Sqre. Lenny Messel wrote to Lin

begging for an interview & saying how much he loved Maud. Went up

alone to Radcliffe, no further on with my gown.

Friday 21 May

Mrs. Turner Phillips 8 o‟c, 28 Palace Court, dinner. Mrs. O. Crawfurd

10.30. V. charming evg. & excellent dinner. To Montgeith Young 10.30.

Met Tabbie there & went on with her to see about seats at Charing X for

Jubilee, pd £60 for 6 seats!!! To Hotels Savoy, Cecil, Charing X & Grand

to see about rooms, not a room to be had. Lunched at Savoy, excellent,

saw Lady de Grey. Ada Sp. & Spencer called just as we were starting for

dinner. Met the Playfairs & a v. pleasant man Mr. Rooper(?). Lin wrote to

Lenny Messel saying he would not hear of Maud‟s being engaged to

him.

unhappy & follows Maud about like her shadow. Mr. Cuming, Mr. Snagg,

bought white shoes gloves & stockings Barkers. Rested after luncheon

& went with M. to Mrs. P.S‟s, saw Wallaces there otherwise dull little

party, not enough people. M. & self met Lin at Athenaeum. Went in Court

dress compulsory. Most brilliant assembly, saw Lockwood, Col. Welby,

Young‟s, walked to Midge‟s across park, heavy rain & strong wind. Mrs.

Godefroi called, did not see her.

Saturday 29 May

Mrs. Montague Fowler 4.30, 78 Pall Mall. Maud & Mary Macqueen to

Ranelagh with Mr. Carlisle. I join them at 6.30 for dinner there with Mr.

Carlisle‟s party. Lin dines at Berkeley H. with Fanny Barker‟s theatre

party. 10.30 to Miss Ratcliffe. Maud working all morg. I went at 9.30 to

Miss Ratcliffe‟s wrong day! & vy tired turning out so early. Maud & Mr. C.

& Mary at 3.30 to Ranelagh. Heavy rain but lovely evening after 4. Went

alone to Mrs. Fowlwer‟s, v. few there evidently does not understand

entertaining, or they do not know many people. Left cards at Grand

Hotel on Mrs. Blair & then joined Mr. C, Mary & Maud at Ranelagh,

played croquet. Mr. McHardy & Mr. Wolf came at 7. Had delightful table

near window in New Room. Sat out after on Terrace & had coffee. Found

both Mr. McHardy & Mr. Wolf wanting in tone so familiar in manner but

excellent music. 3 Miss Eisslers, & Miss G. Egremont sing, charming

American. Saw Mrs. Messel driving in Pk. Mr & Mrs. Blair & Adela

To Ratcliffe morg. Maud to Mr. Macqueen publisher at 2.30. Emilie took

her. Mad‟lle here to lunch poor little thing always gives me a bad

headache. Fearful storm at 4 o‟c this morg. Miss Mackery & brother,

Miss Meinertzhagen & friend, Mary Macqueen & Miss Cox, Mrs.

Spofforth, Miss Rose Innes, Mrs. Whean & daughter etc called. Letter fr.

Lennie, answered it.

Wednesday 2 June

Sir R. & Miss Webster‟s at home 10 o‟c. Mrs. Johnson Ferguson at home

4.30 to 6.30, 55 Cadogan Sqre. Lady Lucas at home 4.30. Called alone at

4 on Midge. Met Tilda who went on with me to Mrs. Messel‟s, v.

unpleasant interview. To Spielman, de la Rue, Lady Reed, Henderson,

Lady Salisbury & Mrs. Johnson Ferguson‟s at home. Dull, v. few people.

Maud hard at work all day. Met Lennie at Adelphi Theatre, came into our

box for one act & ½. Lin joined us & took Roy on to Mr. Natorp‟s at

home.

Thursday 3 June

2.30. Miss Willaimson‟s wedding, St Peter‟s Eaton Sqre, 50 Pont St. Miss

Holland‟s dance. Katie Gielgud‟s at home at Moray Lodge 4.30 - 7. Maud

invited to dine at Mrs. Messel‟s, cannot go. Mr. Carlisle & Miss Rose

Innes dine here. M. & self to wedding & on to Katie‟s garden party after.

Huge crowd, met Tattersalls, Eykyns, Gilberts, Messels etc etc. Lennie

carried Maud off. Charlie Burnand & Mr. Dicksie there. Spoke to the M

party, seem most anxious to cultivate M. now. Mr. C. & Sylvinia to

dinner. Lennie walked home with us & only had just time to dress before

Mr. C. arrived. V. merry little dinner & Roy, M. & Mr. C. left at 10 for

dance, which they all seem to have enjoyed. Home by ¼ to 2.

Friday 4 June

Mrs. de la Rue‟s party as before on river for Eton, all 4 asked. Lovely

day. Only 18, Mr & Mrs. de la Rue, 3 boys, Sybil, Mr & Miss Grantham, Mr

Goff, Mr Auld, Mr & Miss Purcel, Roy Maud & self, Miss Preston & rest

do not remember names of. Lin unable to go on account of work. All the

party remained on with exception of Maud, self, Mr & Mrs. de la Rue &

Mr & Miss Purcel. Lady Sutherland came back with us. Most delightful

day. Feel awfully tired.

Saturday 5 June

We all go to Tabbie for Whitsuntide. Roy & self to Tabbie‟s, Maud & Lin

unable to come on account of work. Met Midge & D. at Waterloo & came

in same carriage by 2.5, only 15 minutes late. Tabs, Gareth & Gwen met

us, all looking well. Place lovelier than ever & glorious evening, so hot.

Ham away yachting. New baby pretty & more like Tabbie than any of the

children. Gareth v. grown & quite a dear.

for words. Maud dined with Mrs. Lindo. Only Roy & Lin to Mrs. Holland‟s

& seem to have enjoyed it v. much.

Friday 11 June

Midge, Dora & self returned fr. Tabbie‟s. H. came as far as Southampton.

Dear Maudie‟s drawing for “Cherrywinks Dearkins Esq” (Mrs. Willard‟s

book) finished & sent off. Think both Lin & Maud looking pale &

overworked. Lin dined out with a Mr. Lawrence at Princes Restaurant.

Roy, M. & self alone. Maud had long letter fr. Mr. Carlisle fr. Bergen, he

appears to have had awful passage.

Corbett‟s for Lin Maud & self. Mrs. Johnson Ferguson at home 4.30 to

6.30, 44 Cadogan Sqre. Mrs. Macqueen at home 4 - 7, Mr G. Grossmith.

Mrs. Montague Fowler‟s supper party 10.30. Out morg. early, cold &

violent storms of rain. At 4.30 to Mrs. Macqueen‟s with Maud. Mr. Blair,

Galbraiths etc there & Grossmith at piano. Vy pleasant tho‟ poor dinner

at Mrs. Corbett‟s. Col. Boyce took me in, v. interesting old man, told me

of Guilds & their uses, & receipt for cold. Left Maud at Mrs. Schwann‟s

dance, Hobart Farquhar there. Unable to go to Mrs. Fowler‟s. Lin‟s eyes

bad with cold, seems tired with work.

Mrs. Mocatta‟s dinner 8 o‟c, Lin & self. Mrs. F. Gordon‟s garden party,

Bentley Priory 3.30 to 7. Mrs. Warre‟s at home 4.30 to 6.30. V. tired

unable to go to at home. Miss Innes called & Mr. Blair, asked Roy &

Maud & Mr. Blair to go to see Bernhardt tonight in “Loren(illeg)” by A. de

Musset & dine with her at Bristol Hotel. Miss Innes had double box. All

enjoyed it.

Hobart Farquhar & Mabel to lunch. Sp, Ada & Hilda to park with Maud &

self. Lennie to church with Maud & went up with us. Lin working hard all

day, discovered he had had wrong lotion for eyes, so vy vy sorry,

entirely my fault. Lin working in school room. Mabel left early after

lunch. Lennie, Mr. Hall (barrister) Mr. Gilmer, Mr. Blair & Miss Innes

called. Met Mr. Blair in Park, he walked to Palace Hotel with us. Muddle

about Sp‟s lunching here, asked him & not hearing till this morg. did not

think he c‟d come especially as Ada & Hilda came with him to Park.

Monday 21 June

Imperial Fête. Maud asked to sell. Mrs. Moscheles, Ham, Tabbie, Midge

to dinner, & Lennie. Out shops morg. Sophy to breakfast. Mr. Blair called

& had tea, showed us Kodac. Dull dinner, H. so silent & self absorbed.

Midge & Tabs seem to like Lennie better than Mr. Blair. All left by 11.

Imperial Fête. X. Jubilee procession. Lin Maud & self to Athenaeum Club

to see Procession. Roy to Punch office Fleet St. Glorious day. Started at

7 o‟c fr. Stafford Ter. Great crowd but no inconvenience. Excellent

places. Wonderful sight of English & Colonial troops & foreign

embassies. Had coffee here & at Club & light luncheon there. Saw Rider

Haggard, Flowers, Pepys Cockerell, Mrs. Tuer who sat vy near me, Mr.

Weigall. Procession past from 10 o‟c until 11 o‟c. Most wonderful sight

the Queen looked well tho‟ much paler than 10 years ago. Saw well. Saw

Mr. Blair with a lady. He called afternoon. Lin working in misery all

afternoon Home fr. pro. by 3.30. Had tea, walked to meet carriage fr.

Club to Pk. Met Orton, Rhodes etc etc.

Imperial Fête. Teutonic Naval Review. Lin & self to Liverpool by night

mail. Roy to Oxford for Exam. Very pretty illuminations on way to

station. Maudie to Bazaar, only made 7/6. Mr. Blair, Eve & Mr. Bainbridge

& Lennie there. Scene between Mr. B. & L. Maud on with Lennie to the

Messels to dinner. She got home before we started. They had all been

most kind to her.

Thursday 24 June

Imperial Fete. Mrs. Steincopff‟s at home 4 – 7. On board “Teutonic” at

11.30.Great crowd over 250. Comfortable cabin near big saloon & close

to Tabbie‟s. Hers a larger & much lighter one. Lucys, Sir W. Agnew,

Wolff, & no end of friends. Steamed away about 11.30. Most wonderfully

organized ship. Luncheon & dinner most sumptuous, any amount of

strawberries, peaches, pines etc, ices always at lunch & dinner. Sat on

cdeck after dinner. Mr. John Moseley v. attentive to Tabbie all thro‟ trip &

left when she left. Mr. B. called morg. & Lennie came at 5 stayed till 7!

Both saw Maud alone.

Friday 25 June

Imperial Fête. Anchored 2 miles off Ryde at the end of the line of

Battleships. Lovely day. About 250 more people arrived on “Magnetic”

about 4 o‟c. Ld & Ldy Dufferin Ld & L. C. Beresford etc etc Jeunes etc.

Steamed slowly after along line of ships. Glorious sight 5 square miles

of ships!!! Sat at Hamilton‟s table. Mr. Macmillan, Mr. Myers, Mrs.

Jackson, Tabs & self. V. pleasant table. Lin at Mr. Wolff‟s. Find Mr. W. so

kind but so noisy. Hamilton wonderfully amiable.

Saturday 26 June

Imperial Fête. Maud goes with Mabel & Mrs. R. Wallace to “Palatine”

Mrs. Watney‟s yacht. M. not going. M. dined at Mrs. Messel‟s & went to

Her Majesty‟s theatre with them. Naval Review. Breakfasted at 9.

Glorious day all the men of war & ships splendid in their bunting. About

(blank) the Prince came round the ships. Tremendous shouting &

playing of National anthem. Cheers & shouts fr. all the different ships, 5

square miles of them. Mr. Ismay & Ld Hertford went in “Turbinia”, went

at the rate of 34½ knots an hour. It shot past us with flames rising yards

above the funnel. At (blank) the Review began & the whole looked like a

vast Naval engagement without any lives lost or damage done. Most

wonderful sight. Mr. J. Mosley, Miss Campbell v. smart girl, Mr.

Macmillan, Mr. J. & self at our table. Speeches fr. Ld Dufferin, Lord

Seymour, Mr. Ismay, Mr. Depui(?). After many of us on tender to see

Illumination most extraordinary sight like avenues & avenues of ships

covered in hoar frost brilliantly illuminated & memorable as being the

first great Naval Review lighted entirely by Electricity. The Russian ship

“Russia” had also a huge eagle in electric light. The Turbinia” is the

fasted vessel afloat & it is supposed will entirely supplant all others.

Sunday 27 June

Tilda & Maud to Albert Hall with the Messels & Lennie brought her back.

More than half of the party left on the tender “Magnetic” about 10.30.

Dull drizzly morning. Tabbie &H. left about same time. Their yacht with

the F. Stuart Wortleys & Major Galway on board & Gwen & Eve came

close to us & their two boats came alongside. Tabs looking sweetly

pretty in fascinating blue serge costume & cap. Most lovely afternoon.

Lunched at Mr. Wolff‟s table, not so nice as our own, so noisy & muddly.

Lin & self sat on deck for 2 hours after tea which we had with Mrs.

Jackson, Mr. J, Mr Margaret Ismay! & Miss Bocquet. The Jacksons want

us to to go on & stay there but Lin‟s work prevents us. Lin & self dined

at Lucy‟s table. Dr Watson (Ian Maclaren) Marquis of Hertford, Lady

Margaret Ismay, Sir Russell, Mrs. Graves & Monseignor Nugent only. V.

amusing dinner. I sat between Ld. Hartford & Dr Watson. Funny stories

of this at end on (illeg)!!!

Monday 28 June

Mrs. Rawlinson 4 - 7. Mrs. de la Rue‟s dance 9.30. Left “Teutonic” after a

most delightful cruise at 11.30. Special train up. Lovely hot day.

Lunched in train, vy stuffy little compartment nearly suffocated with heat

during luncheon. Mr. Wolff, Mr. Lucy, Miss May etc with us. Had long

talk with Mr. Lowther & Mr. Langton who met us at Miss Purvis‟ yrears

Lady Lucas at home 4.30. To see Law Courts with Mr. Hall, Carey St

entrance to Law Courts. In all morg. Met Mr. Hall & Mr. Whitaker at Law

Courts. Went thro‟ the different Courts & heard some cases most

interesting & had tea after at Mr. Hall‟s rooms. Do not like Mr. Whitaker‟s

face, he is exactly like W. Furrell.

Thursday 1 July

Lady Richmond 4 – 7. Academy Soiree 9 o‟c. Went out all morg. with

Midge in coupé. Walked to her house & lunched there. Most delicious

mutton & tapioca pudding, cheese biscuits & butter exquisitely served,

silver perfect. To Lady Richmond, saw Mr. & Mrs. Harvey, Violet Hunt,

Clifford, Muir Mackenzie, Mrs. Macmillan etc. Lin & Maud to Soirée. Met

B. Weigall, Mr. Carlisle, Mr. Stebbing, young Horsely etc etc & enjoyed it.

Edgar undergoes his operation to ear, No 4 Up. Wimpole Street. Lady

Maud dined at Mrs. Messel‟s. I went alone at 3.30 & called on Mdes

Edgar‟s operation to ear. Mrs. Rivière‟s garden party 4 o‟c. Mr. Carlisle‟s

party at Ranelagh. Mr. C & & his brother both driving their own horses in

competition. Mrs. Macqueen lending us her carriage to drive down at

2.15. Mary going with us, dine at Ranelagh a party of 8. Mervyn & Ethel

arrived from S. America at Midge‟s. Enjoyed Ranelagh immensely. Saw

jumping, horse competition & Polo. Party Sir A. & Miss Hemming, Sir

Gilbert Carter, Mr. Fleck & Mary Macqueen. Mr. C. & Mr. Fleck rather

attentive to Mary who disappeared for a long while after dinner with

both.

Lady Armstrong called. Mrs. Speed at home 4 - 7. Mr. Hartree at Lords.

Mrs. Jack Johnson‟s dinner party, unable to go. I treat the maids & Otley

to “The Circus Girl”. I went with Lin Roy & Maud to Lords. Lovely day.

Got there at 12.30. sat until luncheon time on Mr. Hartree‟s break. Usual

party, Lady Lawrence etc, not so many of the men habitués. Lennie

there, joined us later at luncheon. Sat next to Lady L, Chief Justice of

Ceylon & Mr. Huish. Sat in Mr. Huish‟s carriage until tea time, game over

at 3.30. Poor play. Cambridge won. Lennie & self drove in hansom, M. &

Roy in brougham. Long talk with Lennie afraid Lin won‟t give his

consent yet. Mad‟lle here to supper. Maud & Roy to Lady Quilter‟s dance

self lunch 1.30 at Mrs. Wallace‟s, 5 Ralston St. Self alone to Mrs. W‟s.

Maud lunching at Mrs. Platt‟s. V. charming luncheon at Mrs. Wallace‟s

met lovely Mrs. Cunard with her pretty little daughter & another lady.

see neither presents nor get tea or anything. Sybil looked charming

going away in all white, hat & all. Saw Lady Pontifax, Dickens,

Loraine(?) v. interesting clergyman, Dr Farquharson eratic as usual, Mrs.

Lin off early to Calais. Woke late & breakfasted at 10. Wrote to Maud &

Ethel Mervyn. I read & dressed at 12 o‟c & called to enquire after Mrs.

Sington. Saw Poppy S, looks much stronger. Asked if Maud & Lennie

were engaged & distinctly said “No” & on to Edgar & Sophy by omnibus,

16 Maddox St. V. good luncheon. Edgar better. Had long talk about

settlement etc & drove home in cab. Mr. Hall called & Mr. Hood who

stayed some time.

V. hot. Called at 3.30 at Mr. Smith X. Solicitor about silver division. He

does not know or cannot give me figures of what the 6 others divided in

silver came to & feel sure I have gone without either silver or equivalent,

to lunch at Mrs. Coward‟s, only Eve, Major Slater, Bob & M. there & they

went on after to Exhibition, had tea there. Went alone at 4 o‟c called on

Mrs. Joachim (Mr. J. died suddenly) to Mrs. Armstead, Midge who went

on with me to leave cards on Mrs. Temple, Lady Blythe, Olive

Midge & Dora to luncheonm 1.30. Lovely day. Went with Lin to Calais

with Mr. Burnand & Cuthbert. Met Mr. Power at Dover. V. strong S.W.

Hotel S‟hamton to H. Langley & Midge. H.L. just arrived on Magdalena fr.

Dear Maud‟s birthday at Buscot Park. Vy hot. H. left for a fortnight‟s

cruise with Mr. Wilson. Lin left for London by early train. Tabs & Roy to a

garden party. I called on Mrs. Gibb & had tea with the children in

schoolroom.

Friday 6 August

Maud returns fr. Buscot. Wire fr. Lennie to know if he might see her. M.

too busy packing & unpacking etc. Garden party there. Letters fr. Maud

with Gareth & Baby went with me to C.C. & to see Gordon Hotel.

Wednesday 11 August

Lin to London by 11 train. X. Had my first cycle lesson. Found it

extremely easy with man to guide one. Drove after lunch to see Roy at

camp playing cricket. Got 9 wickets & made 6 runs. Had tea there.

Tabbie & Mr. Guthrie for cycle ride to (blank). Nursemaid seedy so Tabs

had to return home & I called on Mrs. Gibb & saw arrival of Mr.

Saunders. Lovely evening.

Thursday 12 August

Most lovely day. Picnic to Burley Beacon at 3 o‟c. Tabbie, Mr. Saunders,

Roy & Mr. Guthrie on cycles. Miss Saunders, Gwen & self in carriage

Evey & Dolly G. both with feverish colds & unable to go. Lovely drive &

most lovely spot where we picniced on the slope of a high hill covered

with bracken & gorse & deep purple heather & ling & clumps of woods

of pine trees with lovely pale green moss growing under them. Exquisite

view down valley & rising beyond. Setting sun glorious red purple &

yellow & drove home part of way by moon light. Letters fr. Lin Maud &

Rained morning. Letters fr. Lin, Clara Bergheim & Mrs. Wallace. My cycle

man did not come. Sat out morg. Garden party at Mrs. Surman‟s. Poured

Drove to meet Lin at C.C. 4 o‟c. He went in after & joined Mr. Guthrie &

Tabs in their cycle ride. Eve & self walked along cliff, met Surmans,

Gilsons & saw the Fags & Miss Penruddock. Had 2nd cycle lesson &

went length of tennis lawn alone. Lovely day very windy. Lin looking

well.

Pouring wet day. Wrote to Sp, Conrad, Mrs. Galbraith, Maud. Sent

dividend of 6/9 fr. Harrods to L.County Bank.

Monday 16 August

Lin, Mr. Guthrie & self leave The Anchorage & go to The Gordon Hotel

Southbourne. Roy goes to “Nymans” Crawley Sussex to join Maud at

Mrs. Messel‟s straight from The Anchorage. Mr. & Miss Saunders came

morg. to say goodbye & stayed until luncheon time. We all sat on terrace

& watched the trial of guns on the Isle of Wight. Tabs, Lin & Mr. G.

cycled to Gordon Hotel & I drove with nurse & the 2 boys at 3.30. Why

such speed? Tabs overwrought. Had tea on verandah here. Bright

bedroom & had vy good dinner at 7.30 at small table facing sea. Sat out

on verandah for coffee & until 10.30. Table d‟hote tables consisted of

invalid gentleman with wife? & small boy, silent & never opened their

mouths all dinner time. One gentleman at table alone, 2 gentlemen at

another table.

Tuesday 17 August

Dine with Clara & Mr. Bergheim. Wrote to put her off. At Gordon Hotel

Southbourne. Whole gale of wind blowing all night, things covered in

sand in morning. Mr. G. Lin & self breakfasted together. Had letter from

Edgar about silver division & fr. Mr Lemon about Ontario D. not being pd

in. Blowing hard & raining slightly. Tabbie came at 3.30 & drove me to

Boscombe fête, saw dogs, artillery display etc. Saw Mrs. Pym, Cap‟t &

Mr. Hooper, Mrs. Gilson son & dau, Miss Penruddock, Mrs. Oliphant etc.

Cost 3/- tea & entrance. Tabbie dined here & had tea here. Lin & Mr. G.

cycled to Wimbourne. Sat out after dinner & saw Boscombe fireworks.

Wednesday 18 August

Lovely day. 3rd cycle lesson & did vy badly. Dear Lin & Mr. Guthrie left at

20 to 11. I went in bus to C.C. & saw Lin off & said goodbye to Mr. G.

who went to Ringwood to stay with the Whites, Mrs. Jones son &

daughter. Miss Daubigny & Miss Cullen to tea had 2 teas for 3, stayed

some time. Walked part of way back & met Gwen & Evy driving over with

my letters. One fr. Con. showed children & Mad‟lle my room. Dined

alone. One gentleman doing same the other end of room. More fireworks

at Boscombe. Wrote letters. Thunderstorm at 2. Teas on terrace.

Sea water bath. 2 small apollinaris bottles. Man came with cycle but was

too frightened of a drop of rain so he comes tomorrow at 10. Letters fr.

Mr. Blair & Lin. Maudie came to London yesterday for 2 days to have her

teeth stop‟d. Tabbie called with Mad‟lle & children to know if I cared to

go to Fête. Did not. Cap‟t & Mrs. Daubigny called & sat a long while

chatting on Terrace. Told me of Indian troubles & Ld Salisbury refusal to

agree with the Powers regarding Turkey & Greece. Read “The Well

Beloved” find it clever but unnatural. Dressmaker called at 11.30. Dull

dinner rather, novelty of situation worn off. Lennie dining with Lin &

Tabs goes for day to Winchester. Fiendish day blew & rained all day

long but I walked alone as far as Mrs. Daubigny‟s & not v. tired after. X.

Two letters fr. Lin, Maud, Fritz saying how last division had been

invested. Letter fr. Mrs. Galbraith saying they expected Roy fr. Mrs.

Wallace & div of 19/4 on £114.10.0 invested in Gt. Eastern Rly & £2.15.7

Promised to take tea at Mrs. Daubigny‟s. Blowing hard all day, a perfect

hurricane but vy fine. 3 letters fr. Lin, vy anxious fearing I am dull. One

fr. Maud. Sand perfectly blinding. Drove in bus to Mrs. Daubigny‟s, met

an unpleasant plain woman there not even redeemed by good manners.

Mrs Daubigny walked home with me, had talk on books. Quiet evg.

Sunday 22 August

Three letters from Lin, arrives at 4. Went in fly fr. Hotel to meet him, saw

his train rush past C.C. station & received wire saying we were to go on

& meet him at Portsdown. So drove on there. Met Lin & drove on to

Burnands. Found Frank & Mr. Lindley there. Waited to tea & saw all the

Burnands. Wilfred better, Connie looking v. young & handsome. Rosie

wanted us to remain to dinner, could not. Drove back & were gone fr.

Hotel 1¼ hours. Good dinner & lovely warm starlight night with less

wind than usual. Lin & I walked alone shore to Southbourne & returned

by road before dinner & greatly enjoyed it. Tried new wine 4/- not so

good.

Monday 23 August

Fine morg. colder. Lin left by 11 train went in bus to see him off.

Afternoon went for walk to Agents to enquire price of land etc about

here. Gwen & Evey rode over looked so pretty in their blue skirts & white

jackets. Tabs had gone off with L. Holland Mr Congreve & 8 or 9 others

to a picnic at Beaulieu in the forest. H. not back & the Yacht not been

heard of yet. H. & Mr. Wilson with one day‟s kit at Trouville since last

Tuesday!

Invitation to spend a week at Skibo Castle, Mrs. Rhodes Lin & self.

Lovely morg. X. Had 4th cycle lesson, got on better, more comfortable

machine. Pouring wet day after & blowing all it knows. Letters fr. Lin,

Maud, Jess, who had been v. ill in Ireland, & Effie Harrison who is going

to be married on the 29th Sept. Paid account £6.2.0. Walked to shops.

Bought paper 3d, small boy 3d, ordered gum lancet.

Wednesday 25 August

Showery, fine alternately. Letter fr. Dickie, 3 Punches & watch. X. Petit

ami. Unable to account for it so soon unless walking on Sunday. Woke

with awful neuralgia down face neck & arm. Fortunately cycle man did

not come although it was a perfectly fine day. Tabbie called with Mr.

Congreve & Miss Holland & asked me to go to Bournemouth with them.

Feel too seedy to hurry & dress. H. back last night & Yacht safe & sound

Dover. Had brought Tabbie lovely enamel scent bottle & silver. They

leave tomorrow or Friday for their Cruise. Wire fr. Skibo at 4 o‟c, Lin &

Maud had arrived safely. Bottle Beaune.

Thursday 26 August

Breakfat in bed ami vy. bad, down just for luncheon. No letters fr. Skibo,

one fr. Mr. Smith enclosing cheque for £15.6.8 which he says he sent me

on the 12th inst. Wet, & sat in drawing room all day. Finished Morley‟s

Robespierre & worked. Wrote to Maudie returning her P.J.B‟s letter.

Friday 27 August

Fine day till 12 o‟c. read Morleys Carlyle. Gwen & Evy rode over & had

tea on Verandah with me. Showed the account of 4 Old Etonians

attempting to cross Channel yesterday in a small boat & nearly drowned

in attempt. Dear letter fr. Roy vy happy at Nymans & remaining on there

until we go together to the Galbraiths next week.

Saturday 28 August

Two letters fr. Lin, vy interesting, had met the Tressady party, Mr. & Mrs.

Fort, Cap‟n Moon, Miss Taylor, Mr. & Mrs. Nesbit. Also saw Mr. Blair at

having good time at Skibo & Maudie receiving two long letters daily fr.

P.J.B. & L.M. Have not yet heard fr. Mr. Bainbridge. P.J.B. told them at

Inverness that Mr. Bayard American Ambassador had stayed at Mr. B‟s

with his daughter. Large party arrived yesterday at Skibo. Roy staying

on at Nymans until we go to Scotland. Am bookless finished Morley‟s

Miscellanies, Robespierre, Byron. Macaulay, Carlyle & Emerson. Like

Robespierre, Macaulay & Emerson best.

Con & Bret Harte. Rosie & Connie & the Baby came over to tea. Dear

No letters fr. either Lin or Maud all day. Wire fr. Lin at 4.30 fr. Dornock.

“Best love go to Bainbridge arrive tomorrow 8 o‟c.” Bright sun but v. v.

windy & clouds of blinding sand which penetrates everywhere. Packed

& mended morg. Saw little dressmaker Welchman & pd her 11/6, Gave

her white bodice to do. Sat out after tea & actually felt dull, have no

books to read. Wrote Lin & Mr. Galbraith & station master Euston. Mr.

Davis made me jump at dinner tonight by suddenly making some remark

about the weather. He told me about his house & asked me to go over it

& seemed vy agreeable. 2 waiters stared as usual.

Showery day. Put away curtains yellow velvet 2 prs fr. my room in

wooden box in loft. Otley changed 4 books at Mudies & left my pass

book at Bank. I went off at 10.30 by bus to Swears & Wells, to

Redmaynes etc. No letter fr. Lin, Maud or Roy. Worked all afternoon with

Emilie in my room. Two letters fr. Lin, one fr. Maud written on a Barker

bill. Tilda & Rosie Burnand & Jessie.

Friday 3 September

Lovely morg, dear Roy returning fr. Nymans at 11 o‟c. Wrote to Lin &

Miss Milliken. Miss Gill here all day v. busy working & packed. Roy

arrived at 12 o‟c fr. the Messels looks vy well.

Lovely day. Leave at 12.15 for Douce Coeur Abbey on the Solway Firth.

Founded in 13th century by wife of Puppet King John Balliol, founder of

Balliol College. Some on coach, 2 dog cart, & cycles. V. picturesque

village 9½ miles fr. Terregles drive thro‟ lovely part of country. The

Abbey one of the loveliest & by far best kept ruins I have ever seen.

Walked round by hill ¾ of an hours walk. Fr. hill can see the Abbey

nestling beneath a hill on one side & in the distance the Solway Firth.

We had luncheon at small Inn where it was not easy to get stabling

sufficient for the 5 horses. Tea also at Inn & long drive home. Curling

evg. & to bed at 12 o‟c.

To church with McCleans & Grace F. Long walk after up White Hill.

Monday 13 September

Lovely day. Great number of people to tea about 40. Dull deadly dull

people. Maud leaves Mr. Bainbridge‟s for the Nicols. Mr. Blair met Maud

& took her to his mother‟s house.

Tuesday 14 September

Drove large party at 8 o‟clock 14 miles to see Otter Hunt. Lovely drive &

lovely day. V. pretty sight seeing the otter hounds working along the

sides of the river. Followed on foot some way but too hot & too tired. Mr.

McClean, Lin, Mr. Dalgleish & self got into break & followed along the

road. Met Rector of St George‟s Hanover Sqre who told us our party had

gone back so decided to lunch at (blank) instead of Moncaine. Met them

& lunched off v. nasty things at (blank). Lovely drive home which we

reached at 4 o‟c.

Left Terregles by 11 train, had to pay 11/- extra on wrong company‟s

line. Mr. Galbraith, H. Stephenson, Mr. & Mrs. McClean saw us off. Great

commotion at Carlisle nearly left luncheon basket behind, & Lin failed to

recognize his portmanteau at Euston which we reached 42 minute late.

Great commotion again! Found Tilda at Stafford Terrace on arrival.


Tilda arranged flowers morg. Put out some of silver. Roy to Mr. Scones

crammer. Maudie having v. good time at Mrs. Nicol‟s, goes to Lady

Granville Gordon Hallwhere she met Hobart Farquhar & Graham Clowes

who is vy handsome. Danced a great deal with him & had rather a scene

with poor Hobart. Lin, Tilda Roy & self to see “La Poupée”. Saw Mr.

Abbey there who came into our box during interval. Odd creature, talked

about some one looking like a “sick eagle”! Seemed a little sorry for

himself, his wife in New York with her mother who is vy ill.

Friday 17 September

Had cycle lesson, 1st at the back of Up. Phillimore Gds. After luncheon

with Tilda by om. to Sloane St. Fetched my gloves 1/3 & to Harrods

Stores ordered fish etc, paper, etc. Saw Mrs. Fritz & Mrs. H. Burnand &

son, went over 2 flats, very expensive. Quiet evg. Con called & stayed

some time.


Had 2nd cycle lesson, got vy hot & made my throat feel worse. Box for

Forbes Robertson‟s Hamlet at Lyceum. Dine at 6.30, lunch at 1 o‟c. Plant

for drawing room 2/-. Out shops. Enjoyed F.R‟s “Hamlet” but rather

artistic poetic Hamlet than strong one, prefer Tree‟s. Mrs. Pat

Campbell‟s Ophelia insipid. Looked vy pretty with a new tint of hair, now

nut brown! Ellen Terry in box opposite with infatuated youth & 2 plain

girls. Mr. Rooth his wife & her sister came to our box during interval,

In bed to breakfast. Tilda called at cycle place to put off lesson. X. Lin &

Roy to Hampton Court after luncheon on cycles. Tilda to German home.

Drymen N.B. safely Saturday. Mr. Macqueen met her at the Station. No

one called. Tilda to see woman at St Georges Hospital, found her

Roy & Lin to Boulogne for day returning at 12 tonight. Cold dinner for

Tilda & self. Tilda & self sat in Gardens 2 hours & read. V. warm. Mervyn

& Ethel, Ham Langley & Dora to luncheon & tea. Miss Neaves called. Lin

taken bad cold fr. Dr Buzzard on Boulogne steamer.

Monday 27 September

Lennie dined here at 6 o‟c & went with Lin Roy & self to Drury Lane to

see “White Heather”. Tilda left after dinner for Harwik & Rotterdam.

Lennie seemed rather quiet & depressed, said his father was not well.

Letter fr. Maudie going to Aucheneck Thursday next & to Terregles on

the 5th with Jenny. X. Bicycle man came but another man & another

machine & too high to get onto, so could not have lesson. V. annoying

waste of time. Man said they did not profess to teach. Sh‟d have said so

before.

looked v. nice. Bill also quite smart. Saw a good deal of him. Effie looked

well but not her best. Took omnibus fr. Victoria, Roy saw me into it &

went on to tea at Norfolk Hotel with Mervyn, Ethel & met Midge again

there. Met Hensman in bus who walkd part of way with me. Mad‟lle dined

with Roy & self.


Lin & Roy dine at Ayala‟s. Maud goes to Aucheneck today. Emma out.

Lin had letter fr. Maud. Called alone at 3.30 on C. Hartree, went by bus &

returned on foot. Called also on Lady Reed, out, & Mrs. C. Mackenzie,

out. Saw Lizzie. Let their stuffy dark flat for 6 months fr. next week. Quiet

little dinner alone. Lennie came about 9.30 & remained till 11.30. We

discoursed on Maud. Washed my head. Felt awfully tired.

Awful headache over books accounts etc. Wish Lin would pay me

regularly so much a month. The continued accumulation of accounts

worries me dreadfully. Pity poor Maud to start same worries & bothers.

Lin, Roy & self dine 7.30 at Mrs. Bergheim‟s. Out morg. shop‟g. With Roy

in omnibus to Comedy to see “One summer‟s day” most charming little

play & well acted all round. Hawtrey, Kemble etc. Home by bus. Bought

fruit. Very pleasant dinner at Clara‟s. Lovely house, camelion (sic)! Met

Mr. & Mrs. H. Peto, Mr. & Mrs. Duncan, elle Americaine, & Mrs. Chapman.

Taken horrid cold in my head. X. Mare returned after being out 2 months

on grass.

payment out of £18 I paid at Southbourne for him & me, & Roy‟s & my

expenses to Dumfries & our expenses here for few days.

X. Used the mare for 1st time since her return. The Dumfries Ball. Maud

going with Mrs. Galbraith‟s party. Lin & self dine at Col. Welby‟s 8 o‟c. V.

charming dinner of 6. Mrs. Craigie not only v. pretty & smart but

delightfully bright & clever in conversation. Mr. & Miss Copland Griffiths,

Col. Welby & ourselves, most delightful dinner & charming company.

Am quite fascinated by Mrs. Craigie, asked me to call. Out morg. to

Swears & Wells, called at Midge‟s & walked home. Read “Partners

Kensington & at 2.30 in carriage to Mde. Bocquet‟s to see about doing

up of seal skin & brown velvet dress. Met Eve C. at Swears & Wells

where I was fitted with my blue cape, & took her on with me to Heath‟s &

left cards at Mrs. Roberts. Lady Flower called.

Saturday 9 October

Out morg shops. At 4 o‟c drove in brougham with Lin & Roy to

Aquarium to see “Prize fight” between Corbett & Fitzsimmons on

cinematograph extraordinary effect & all the brutality of the actual fight

taken away by no sound of blows or sight of blood. Felt really interested

& Roy would not allow my attention to wander one moment. Balanced

my hip bath on his chin going to bed & performed other feats.

Sunday 10 October

Lin working morning. Lennie called has bad cold. I walked alone to

Round Pond & sat about ½ an hour. No one called. Lin & Roy for cycle

ride. Quiet evg.

Monday 11 October

Go to tea at Mrs. Maclean‟s 4.30 to meet “Bobby”. In all morg. Long

letter fr. Maudie seems seedy at Terregles which evidently does not suit

her, or Jenny Wilson, who has to leave today. Letter fr. Lennie saying

Maud does not return until next week! To Mde Bocquet‟s at 3.15. Fitted

with brown velvet, blue cape (old blue velvet) & seal. To Mrs. M‟s met

Bobby there, seems depressed & preoccupied. Said nice things about

Maudie. He leaves tomorrow for India & is going to the front, Khyber

Pass. Roy left after dinner for Oxford, seems nervous about his exam.

Out morg, quite warm. Ordered black & white cheque dress at Barkers.

Roy not passed! Most disappointing. At 2.30 to Bocquet, not ready after

waiting ½ an hour. Called at Mrs. Wheen‟s, Mrs. Holmes‟ & Aunt Linda‟s.

Expected Ottie & her husband to tea, did not come. Con expected, wired

could not come. Letter fr. Maudie, returns Monday.

To Marshalls got 4 yds grey silk & 3 ½ flannel for black & white tailor

dress. To Madame B. Ill in bed!!! Not cheerful for my gowns! To Miss

Phillips, going to do my 2 blouses & charge enormous prices! To

Barkers bought 4 yds blue benzaline. Ordered 15 silver buttons also at

Barkers. Roy idling his time terribly. Letter fr Maudie & fr. Lennie. Roy

missed his exam & am not surprised. Very sorry especially on Lin‟s

account.

Saturday 16 October

Ap‟t Heath‟s morg. Had arrived evening. Walking back through Row

lovely morg, met Mrs. Messel, Ottie & Mr. Loring, spoke to them, Ottie v.

pretty. I called at Midge‟s, out. 25 other calls, all out. Left garden grapes

at Mr. Guthrie‟s! Con arrived about 5 o‟clock, seems vy cheery & well.

Lin v. upset about Roy not passing into Magdalen after matriculation

exam. Wish Roy were more earnest about it & serious generally. He

does not appear to value all the trouble Lin takes over him.

X. Ami. Roy off at 9.30 to Mr. Lehmann‟s. Lunched there. Lin met him &

they cycled back together. Mr. Lehmann kindly doing all he can to get

Roy met Maud & Lennie at Station, had 2 wires fr. him today. Maudie

looking pretty & well. Lennie remained to dinner & smoke after. Con left

called & Miss Reeve v. amusing as usual. Lennie dined here & brought

To tea with Maud at Mrs. Wallace 4.30. Fitting at Barkers with cheque

tailor made & to Midge after. Unable to go & see Tabbie at Coburg. Met

Mr. Hood at Mrs. W‟s, seemed surprised at Maudie‟s engagement.

Lennie came in after dinner & stayed till 11 o‟c. Poor Maudie still very

teary.

Shop‟d alone. Maudie to luncheon at the Messels & went after with

Lennie to pay calls in Mrs. M‟s carriage. I went alone at 5 o‟c to Mrs.

Sington‟s met Mrs. de la Penha there & to the Messels to fetch Maud.

Saw Ruth & left without knowing Lennie & Maud were in the drawing

room. L. brought M. home at 6.30. They had been to see Midge, H, Dora

& Con. L. v. pleased with the Langleys house. Miss White here for me.

Lovely morg. Maudie to Church with Lennie & Eve Coward. Mr. Blair met

Maud coming out of Church with Lennie. Scene! Came on to see me

alone after. Most painful interview with him. Wished to see Maud for last

time. Lin w‟d not allow it & sent both Lennie & Maud off at once. Felt

very seedy after, it is so terrible to see a strong man so completely

overcome. Thankful Lin was in & w‟d not allow Maud to see him. Lin

Lovely day. Men out shooting all day. Mrs. Lucas, Mrs. Heyworth

Savage, Miss Priestley & Maud went to luncheon with the shooters. Lady

Priestley & self lunched alone at Easton Park & had a lovely drive after.

Lovely day. Shooters off early before we got down. Miss Theluson to

Lovely day. Lady P. & self drove to lunch at a delightful “Moated

Grange” with the shooters. The ladies walked. Wonderful old carved oak

panels painted white at the Grange. We all drove back (ladies) to Dairy

where Lady P. & I got out & went over dairy & walked home & sat out.

The rest played croquet. Roulette. Lin v. seedy.

Friday 29 October

Return fr. Mrs. Lucas “Easton Park”. Lovely day. Lin left by 8 o‟clock

train with Mr. Lucas, Cap‟t & Mrs. Heyworth Savage & Sir W. Priestley.

Lady Priestley & dau. Maud & self returned together by 12 train. Quiet

evening.

Out morg. shops. Drove with Maud at 4 o‟c to Midge, tea there. To Aunt

Linda saw them all & to Fullers for sweets. Lennie came in after dinner.

Duke” at Adelphi. My eyes hurt too much to enjoy piece.

Mrs. Messel‟s small dance. Lovely day. In all morg. writing letters. Out at

12.30 to Kens. only, shop‟g. In all afternoon. Maud received lovely

bouquet fr. Lennie about 6 o‟c. They enjoyed dance v. much. Ludwig as

Roy calls Mr. Messel v. festive & lively. Lennie sent games. Delightfully

quiet evening at home.

breakfast. M. & self to Lady P‟s at 4 o‟c in cab. Met pretty Mrs. Heyworth

dull uninteresting dinner at Mrs. H‟s. Mr. Lewis took me in & Mr. Trower

friend of the Jacksons on other side. Dull. Sat after dinner with Mrs.

Turquand most amusing woman & still so young looking & pretty.

Maud at 4 o‟c to Mrs. Reeve, had amusing talk with her. To Mrs.

her pretty drawing room “Little House” there. Lennie came in whilst we

were at dinner late as Lin finished his work thank God & had a free day

Maud & Lennie off in Mrs. M‟s carriage at 11 o‟c to see houses, & to

James‟ theatre most charming piece by Carton “The Tree of Life”

delightfully acted. Lin joined us there & we thoroughly enjoyed piece.

Bought fruits 5/5 sweets 1/6 & 2 lbs of sausages 1/8 coming home. Ruth

& Lennie dined here. Maud & Lennie met Mr. Blair in Regent Street

during afternoon bowed & passed on. Lady Henning & Mr. Galbraith

X. First time windows cleaned on our return fr. summer holiday. Otley

has done them until now. Busy all morg. ironing etc for Maud to go by 3

with us, brought me flowers. Lin saw Maud off. She does not look well

over houses. Muriel back with Maud to tea here. Maud dined with Mr.

Seligman. Lennie came in & went with her from here, brought flowers!

Called alone at 3.30 on Mrs. Sington found Apple there sewing

undergarments for coming event, poor little thing. To Effie Weigall, had

tea with her. Such a pretty flat & such good furniture everything

charming & so bright & clean. Left cards on Lady Hardman & Mrs. de la

Shop‟g morg. alone. Lennie fetched Maud at 11 o‟c & they went over

houses together. Maud lunched there & joined Roy, Lin & self at

Comedy Theatre “One Summer‟s Day”. with Lennie. Saw the de la Rues

X. Windows 2nd time. Mrs. Turquand‟s dinner 8 o‟c. Effie Weigall to

luncheon & tea, Jerry fetching her home. Fog, did not come. Out alone

Whitworth, Mrs. & Editha Schwann, Mrs. & Ethel Lindo, Mrs. Percy

rich gravy, potatoes. Artichokes in cups cheesed over & white sauce.

Cabinet pudding. Muffins with scraped cod‟s roe, biscuits, butter &

Dull & foggy. Out morg. to buy silk for cushions & brocade for table

Lovely bright morning. Maudie in bed awaiting Dr O. Ottie & Ruth to

Southampton to sail today for the West Indies. X. Dr Orton called to see

Maud, still v. seedy. At 3 o‟c to stores bought “Cheriwinks” 4/6, atlas &

pocket book. Lennie came to supper, Emily remained in. Sat with me in

Maud‟s room till 10 o‟c. Roy to Circus Girl with friends.

Thursday 2 December

To tea at Mrs. Mayne 5 o‟c. X. Dr O. did not come today. Morg. by bus to

Stehr‟s, 1/6 chocolates. To Midge‟s. At 2.30 to stores bought E‟s dress,

flannel for Maud‟s drawers, Roy‟s cigar case. To leave cards at Mrs.

Maclean, Mrs. Chapman, Miss Mayne, had tea with her. Lennie came in

whilst we were at dinner & sat with Maud in her room with me until 11

o‟c. Mrs. Messel called morg. & brought M. lovely basket of flowers, &

sat some time with her.

getting up but not well yet by any means. Lennie to Nymans till Sunday.

Saturday 4 December

Lin left at 6.45 AM for Nymans to shoot with Lennie. Fetched or sent to

fetch him at 7.45 & somehow missd him. Dined at ¼ to 9. Lin seems to

have enjoyed his day & charmed with Nymans. Maudie better & down to

lunch & dinner. Sat with her all afternoon working & finished reading

“Vanity Fair”. Out alone morg. shop‟g, ordered cross to be sent to

Tassel for Mervyn. X. The dear old man died on Thursday aged 63, only

survived darling Mother 2½ years. Ellis & Emily like two fighting cocks

all day. Hilda & Muriel Messel called & brought Maud flowers & a wee

little doll.

Mrs. Schwann‟s musical party 9.30. Out morg. with Maud for short walk.

Alice Street, Aunt Linda & Mrs. Holmes called. Lennie also came, &

wired for M. & self to go to meet him at 2 o‟c at 19 Connaught Sqre,

unable to go. Lin dined out. Roy left at 1.30 for Nymans for a ball with

Mrs. Messel‟s party. Lennie & Mr. Messel go by later train. Miss White

Mrs. Turquand, most charming house went all over it found each place

in perfect order fr. top to bottom, charming servants & as neat & clean

as possible. To 23 Harley St, concert of amateurs & (illeg). Met Miss

Romer, Miss Douglas, 2 v. pretty girls, Buckmaster. Lennie arrived just

as we left. To stores for M‟s medicine, Barkers for fruit & home. Young

Rubens came & played exquisitely. Lennie arrived & remained to dinner.

Maudie v. overdone again & slept badly. Miss White here for Maud, 7/6.

Thursday 9 December

Lady Priestley at home. Mr. Hartree‟s tea early. Out round the pond with

Maud morg. Lovely day. X. Heard yesterday of George Langley‟s death &

of poor Lucy Oakes‟ death on her way home with her baby fr. India.

Percy on the Frontier in all these troubles. Heard fr. Spencer who is at

Paris Plage.

Friday 10 December

Maud & Lennie to Mrs. Tate‟s to stay until Monday at Liss in Hants.

Pouring wet day. Unable to go out as Otley saw Maud off at Waterloo.

She went down with 2 ladies & one gentleman & Lennie, all going to Mr.

Tate‟s & Mr. Watts! Roy home late to take Maud, Lin very angry with him.

Quiet dinner at 8.30, drawing done quite early.

Saturday 11 December

Lovely day, astonished at myself still about!!! Walked part of way to

Miss Ratcliffe to be fitted with “do up” white & “do up” red velvet evg.

gowns. Roy v. rude again at luncheon his manners & way of speaking

offend me extremely. Hilda Messel met us at Haymarket theatre at 2.30.

Saw “A Man‟s Shadow” excellent. I took Hilda to Charbonel‟s where we

saw Floss Kingscote & Mrs. Holland & Percy. Left Hilda & went on to

Midge‟s, saw Effie, Con, Midge, Ham & Dora. Effie looking very well &

smart. Letter fr. Maudie seems vy happy & warm!

Sunday 12 December

X. Petit ami 3 jours en retard!!! Wretched day, in bed till 12 o‟c. Dora did

not come to luncheon, too wet. Lin to Club after lunch until 8 o‟c. Mr.

Bret Harte came & stayed a long while. Mr. Molesworth & Dr Messel

called.

Monday 13 December

Maud returns from Mrs. Tate‟s at 5.45 Waterloo. Maud & Lennie dine at

Mrs. Stewards at 8 o‟c. Eaton Place. Had a very pleasant dinner there.

Met 2 Countesses & very select little party, & friends came in after

dinner. Very naughty of Lennie, came back part of way in brougham with

Maud.

Tuesday 14 December

Maud out morg. Did flowers. Lin with another fearful cold, 4th one since

his Scottish visit. Mrs. & Hilda Messel, Ellie Ritchie, Mary Macqueen,

Fanny Barker & Mary Carter, Miss Neaves & a funny little curate Mr. St

John de la Bere called. Roy came in to dinner v. pale & no appetite.

Lennie came in whilst we were at dinner looking vy seedy with

neuralgia. Had little talk with Maudie in schoolroom. Sir Frank Lockwood

very ill, Lin unhappy about him. Mrs. Messel asked us to go to Nymans

on Thursday by 4 train, Lennie goes by same.


Lady Armstrong‟s dinner ¼ to 8. Lovely day. X. Roy goes to Oxford at

7.30 for Exam. Feel he cannot hope to pass as he has not worked or

exerted himself in any way. Feel v. anxious about him & his future. Ham,

Tabs & Gwen at Coburg Hotel. Lin‟s cold still very bad & he looks vy

seedy.

Lovely day & very warm. Lin‟s cold v. bad & on his chest. Maud & self

out shopping morg. in Kens. Money flying. Got Nana‟s dress etc. Maud

& self at 3 o‟c to Mesdames Colin Hunter, Marcus Stone, Geilgud,

Hemming, Lady Armstrong stayed some time, & Walter Jones where we

saw Duke & Duchess of York & Princess Victoria. Bought presents for

Mrs. Messel, Galbraith & Hilda M. Mrs. Steincopff & Mrs. Pennefather

called (out). We also called to enquire for Sir F. Lockwood & to tea at

Mrs. Harvey‟s, delightful house. Lennie came whilst we were at dinner

looking v. seedy.


Fog. Box for matinée of “Grand Duchess” Savoy. Awful news of William

Terriss‟ assassination by a jealous maniac at the door of theatre just

before evening performance. Stabbed in 3 places, died in a few minutes.

Lin & self to “Grand Duchess”. Roy joined us later. Not good, St John‟s

voice gone. Lennie called at 3 & took Maud for drive & returned here for

dinner.

Sunday 19 December

Fog. Box for matinée of “Grand Duchess” Savoy. Dull & drizzly. I went &

sat a long while with Mrs. Sington morg. Maud to early service. Lennie

came early & stayed all day & remained to dinner. Lin to club afternoon.

Dora & Lennie to lunch. Roy at his club. Mr. & Mrs. Farquhar (Alice

Nicol) & Miss Rose Innes called. Mr. Dyce & Lennie to dinner. Bad

Tuesday 21 December

Lin & Roy to William Terriss‟ funeral. In all day working. Mrs. & Miss

Rawlinson, Mrs. Marcus Stone, Lady Flower & youngest girl just home

fr. Paris, Mabel W. & Miss Mayne. Pretty little 3 cornered cupboard

arrived for Maud from Mrs. Nicol.


No Punch dinner. Lennie dined here. Children Roy & M. very amused

with crackers as usual. Sent off presents to Edgar, Mrs. Galbraith, Nana,

Aunt Anna, Aunt Barbara etc.


Lin & Roy to Nymans by train & cycle. Maud & self met Lennie Vic. Sta.

at 4 o‟c & Mrs. Geilgud & travelled together. Our train an hour late.

Fearful fog in London, afraid we should never get to Station. Con turned

up just as we were finishing lunch, had seen Mr. Blair at Club who sent

us all sorts of messages. Spoke to Con of Maudie & seemed relieved to

open his heart to him. Arrived Nymans & great scurry to dress for

dinner. Everything v. charming except light on dining table which is

distinctly trying for weak eyes. All most kind, & find Mr. & Mrs. Gielgud

v. interesting.

Friday 24 December

Lovely day. Went for long walk with Mr. Messel & Muriel & Mr. & Mrs.

Gielgud. Enjoyed it immensely. Very happy peaceful day.


Lovely frosty morning. Maud, Lennie & Hilda to Church. Mr. & Mrs.

Messel, Mr. & Mrs. Gielgud, Muriel & self for long walk, enjoyed it

Went with Lin Lennie & Roy to see rabbits. Lost my way in wood

returning & had great fright & a very long walk. Mr. Messel playing golf.

Lin & self returned fr. Crawley after a very charming visit. Mr. Messel,

companions & had some good talks. Mrs. Messel sent us to Three

Bridges Sta. to avoid changing, our train 45 minutes late. Found all well

at home. Had 3 very foggy days in London, so exquisite with us at

Nymans.


Windows cleaned. Raining & blowing hard all day. Called at 2.30 on Mrs.

Sington. Bought Roy‟s gloves 2/6. Hope Bros, ordered bacon, cream

cheese, & Midge. Saw her, D. & H. Ham had met Lennie morg. in

Metropolitan. Conert at Nymans in Village tonight. Ellis & Emma to

Pantomime. Wrote letters all evening.
