Miss Gill came for few days. I drove to Whiteleys, Midge’s & Barkers.

Worked afternoon. Minnie out from 3 until 7.30.

Wednesday 2 January

Sent Emma, Frieda & Minnie to Pantomime. Otley here fr. 5.30 to 8. To

fetch Roy’s luggage fr. Vic, lamps, & to Midge’s. Roy returned fr.

Nymans & dines at Midge’s. Miss Gill & self alone here. Lin to First

Cartoon dinner, having leading subject.

Thursday 3 January

Lunch at Mr. Rose 12.15, witness procession Ld. Roberts fr. Africa. Roy

to Pyt until tomorrow. Foggy. Took cab to Mrs. Spielmans. Stayed there

some time. Charming house, party & entertainment. Saw Ld. Roberts &

everything splendidly. To Midge’s after, who drove me home. Dear Lin

busy with 1st cartoon.

Friday 4 January

Out afternoon to stores, afterwards Mrs. Buckland. Roy to dine Mr. Blair

& “Mrs. Dane’s Defence” after. Roy returned fr. Pyt, all well there.

Lennie much pleased with his visit there. To Sales, busy with Ham,

shop’g. bought Lin stick. V. late dinner!

Saturday 5 January

V. cold. Out morg. shops. Gillie left. Lin & self to see Strupel Peter

Garrick. V. good, Mrs. Doyley, Lottie Viner. 2 Bouchiers there. Frieda

helped with drawing room, no woman here today. V. cold & raw.

Sunday 6 January

Mr. Harris & Miss English called. Bitterly cold, 2 fires all day drawing

room & yet perished! Walked with Lin fr. Hyde Pk. Corner home. Met

Mr. Blair. Darling Maud came to luncheon tea & dinner, dressed here.

Roy to Glovers with Lennie. Mr. & Mrs. Spielman, Lennie, Maud, Roy to

dinner, 7. V. cold. Minnie out all afternoon.

Monday 7 January

V. cold, in all day, snow. Roy dined at Maud’s. Lin busy with reviewers!

Quiet evg.

Tuesday 8 January

Bitterly cold, snow. In all day. No one called. Started cream. Lin went to

Mr. D’Arcy’s, Bylaugh Park, East Dereham, Norfolk, in cart to station.

Sphere reviewer came. I saw him, weird creature. Roy dined at Maud’s,

I alone.

Wednesday 9 January

Roy & self dine at Maud’s. V. cold. Snow thawing. In all day. X. Ami

due Saty next! Frieda out afternoon. Fine & sunny, much warmer. Roy

dined at Maud’s, I unable to go. Mr. Ewart there.

Thursday 10 January

Alice Linley to luncheon 1.30. Mrs. Burnand & Ethel called at tea time.

Ethel going on stage! Darling Maud came for short time. Cap’t

Micklejohn lunched with her & is staying there till Saty. Roy dining

Maud’s & Mr. Allan & Marriott also. Roy to Mrs. Spielman’s dance.

Notices in most papers of Lin’s work. X.

Friday 11 January

Tea at Mrs. English’s. I seedy. In bed till 12.30. Lin returns from Mr.

D’Arcy’s Bylaugh Park tomorrow, had a real good time there.

Saturday 12 January

Mrs. Lovern here ½ day, don’t think much of her cleaning. Down 1.30.

Sat in dining room, saw lady for Alice Bixley. Lin arrived fr. Bylaugh

Park, looks pretty well, little livery I fancy. 6 pheasants fr. Mr. D’Arcy!

Roy dined Maud’s & to Pantomime with them & there again.

Sunday 13 January

Up 12.30. Evelyn C. came after church, stayed some time, anxious to get

married, 5 girls out this next season. Midge to luncheon, looks well &

very handsome, stayed till 5.10. Mr. Bret Harte came & much interested

in Midge who was v. funny & witty. Darling Maud & Lennie to dinner.

M. looking delicate does too much. They had lunched at Charlton!

Monday 14 January

Dine 5 - 7 Savoy Hotel with Sir A & Lady de la Rue & to theatre after.

Also invitation to dine Mrs. Heilbert. Wired early, unable to go, too

seedy. Went at 2.30 brougham to pay 12/6 Russian store & to Maud.

Quiet evg with Roy alone.

Tuesday 15 January

Bothering letter fr. F.C.B. Lin to Col. Lucas after lunch, returns

tomorrow. Darling M. to luncheon. Lady Weston, Miss Neaves, Nelly

Keith, Mrs. Mayne, Miss Thomson, Mrs. Kettle called & Mrs. F. Jackson.

Roy & self quiet evg.

Wednesday 16 January

Florence Blair came to stay. Emma & Minnie out. Called at 3.30 with

Maud & Eve Coward on Mrs. Blair, lovely house & all exquisitely kept.

To Mrs. Galbraith’s & to tea Mrs. Pytt. Roy dined Maud’s & to theatre

after. Lin returned fr. Col. Lucas’ in time for Punch dinner.

Thursday 17 January

Darling Nonie returnns fr. Nymans. Maud fetches Florence & self at 3.30.

Left cards at Mdes. Donaldson, A. Lewis, Geilgud, de Pass, Sutton & M.

Spielman, in. To Maud’s, darling Nonie much grown but has cold. Lennie

looking seedy. Quiet evg. Lin, Roy, F. Blair & self, dinner late.

Friday 18 January

Mrs. Griffith’s 12 Onslow Sqre.

Saturday 19 January

Onslow Ford’s dau. marries young Riviere, 62 Acacia Rd, 3.30. Large

box “San Toy” matinée, Midge, Ham, Roy, Florence & self. Very good.

Beastly morning, in on account of rain. Roy to theatre & dinner with

Lennie & Maud. Lin to theatre alone. F. & self alone.

Sunday 20 January

Walked to Knightsbridge with Roy & Florence, cab to Carlton, lunched

with Maud & Lennie there. Lin came on after. No band on acc’t of

serious illness of the Queen. Saw Bainbridges, Merryweather, Ward &

Mr. Hamilton with an odd lady! Maud & Lennie dine here.

Monday 21 January

George & Anna Dietz lunch here 1.30. Lin out all day. Hard at work &

harrassed with it. Maud dined with F.B.& self & we went to see Marie

Tempest in “English Nell” where Linley joined us. Had given O. Seaman

dinner at Italian restaurant. The Queen very ill.

Tuesday 22 January

The Queen died 6.30 PM. All silent & hushed, gloom prevailing. Lin

greatly worried with work. Florence & Roy dined at Maud’s, 9 there.

Dance & all festivities postponed. Miss Radcliffe to tea my only visitor.

F.B. slept Maud’s, returns early tomorrow.

Wednesday 23 January

The Queen dead. X. Nellie Keith’s 5 o’c. Lin greatly pressed with work,

dined at home 9 o’c. F. Blair & self to lunch & tea Bosanquets. Good

luncheon. Tiresome journey, governess cart to meet & take us

Teddington. Roy & Lin lunched alone. All business closed Stock Ex. etc.

Thursday 24 January

Miss Jones, 149 Gloucester Rd, 4 - 7. Walked morg. Barkers & Whiteleys

& Midge’s, left Florence there to lunch & tea. Out 3.30 stores & Maud’s.

Saw Lennie & Baby. Lin worked all day dined 9 o’c.

Friday 25 January

Lovely morg. Lennie & Maud to Glovers. Baby & Nurse F. here to

luncheon & tea. Left early (poured) in brougham. Baby very sweet. Roy

home early to see him! Out morg. with Florence walking. F. & Roy dined

at Midge’s. Very late dinner here L. & self.

Saturday 26 January

Miss Dolly O’Connell marries Cap’t Pike, 26 Overstrand Mansions SW.

3 o’c. Roy to Glovers till Monday. Florence remaining on as her aunt

cannot have her. In brougham with Florence morg. to Whiteleys &

Marshalls bought silk & boa black. Met Mrs. & Dar Rhodes. Called on

foot Mrs. Palgrave Simpson & Mrs. K. Graham. Char here, ½ day.

Sunday 27 January

V. windy. F. to church. Walked with Lin to Hyde P.C. Bus home. Lin

lunched & had tea Athenaeum. Spencer & Hilda, Baby & Nurse to lunch

& tea. Baby v. good. Heavy rain afternoon. Lin, Florence & self alone to

dinner. No callers.

Monday 28 January

Mrs. Pollen 4 - 7, 69 Ken. Pk Gds. Called Mrs. C. Praed, Welby, English,

Clifford, Pollen, & darling Maud. Baby not v. well. Ruth there & Evelyn,

brought her back.

Tuesday 29 January

Mrs. Pollen 4 - 7. Out morg. Whiteley etc. Maud & Dora to luncheon

both looking sweet & most amusing. We all dined at Maud’s, delicious

dinner & everything lovely fr. table & food to drawing room brass.

Music. Lin walked there & back with Roy, v. cold. X. Callers: Pollock,

Geiger, Warre, Levy, Midge. X.

Wednesday 30 January

Took certificate of 25 Waihi Gold shrs to L. County Bank, gave to Mr.

Castle. Also paid off £100 of £300 borrowed from Bank at 4%. Florence

Blair went to stay Maud’s 5.30 o’c. Dear Lin still worried about work.

Mrs. Palgrave Simpson called. Roy & self alone evg.

Thursday 31 January

Miss Jones 4 - 7, 149 Glouc. Rd, SW. Called on Maud (out). Baby gone

to Bournemouth nursery not sanitary. Mrs. Palgrave Simpson called.

Called O.Shakespear, Fallons, Phillips, & Lady’s shirt place.

Friday 1 February

Mrs. Mount Batten 4 - 7. Dined 8 o’c. Roy v. tired fr. City, was dining

Midge’s, put off as he was departing in carriage! Fletchers & Frisbys

dining there & stray man. To Maud’s morg. just gone out. Made calls

with Maud & F.B. 3.30. Lady Lockwood, de la Rue, Armstrong, met

Lady F. Pelham Clinton there etc.

Saturday 2 February

Funeral procession of The Queen. Lin with Maud to Mr. Allan’s rooms St

James’ St. Roy & Lennie in uniform to some Club. Florence Blair & self

to Park. Intense crowd, never saw anything approaching it. All in

mourning silent & decorous. Saw v. little, the 2 maids more successful. F.

to luncheon & goes at 5 with Len, Maud & Roy to Glovers. Lin & self

quiet evg. at home.

Eve called after early service & took me for walk, came back & lunched

here. Left 3.30. Miss Rose Innes came stayed 7.25. Lin to lunch at club,

home 8 o’c. Quiet evg. Met Mrs. Mackenzie née Bradbury in Gardens.

Roy, Maud & Lennie Glovers.

Monday 4 February

Roy Lennie & Maud & F.Blair remining Glovers till tomorrow. Called

Whiteley, saw Judy Mason at Midge’s, Dora & Ham.

Tuesday 5 February

Out morg. Horrid day cold & snow lying. Stores. Maudie to lunch

brought lovely flowers fr. Glovers. Tabbie came looking lovely. Mrs.

Welby & Mrs. Warre with Mrs. de Pars called only. Quiet evg. Lin

interview P. Agnew & Bradbury, not satisfactory.

Wednesday 6 February

Morg. to Maud’s, with her & F.Blair to Mde Berthe’s & Young’s. In all

afternoon saw no one. Mrs. Spielman & Mabel Wallace called. Roy &

self dined Maud’s, pleasant evg. Lennie played Listz’s rhapsodies,

charming, & Mrs. Galbraith called.

Thursday 7 February

Miss Jones 4 - 7, 149 Glouc. Rd. Announcement of young Graham

Clowes death in S.A, 20. Feel v. sad. Sir Henry Thompson’s dinner. Lin

had to wire unable to go, work. Busy photoing, fortunately sunny day.

Called with Maud on Mrs. Galbraith etc. Also announcement death of Ld.

Robertson’s son in South Africa.

Friday 8 February

Mrs. Hannen, 8 St Andrew’s Place 4 - 7. With Maud who fetched me at 4

to Mrs. Coward’s, Mrs. Stone & Mrs. Roger Wallace. Mrs. Richards

called as hipped as ever! Florence Blair left Maud’s this morning. Raise

Frieda’s wages to £19 fr. £18, 3 months here.

Saturday 9 February

Mended socks etc. morg. Lin & self to matinée “Second in Command”

Haymarket. Most excellent. C. Maud sent me his photo by Lin. To

Midge’s on way home, Bee there. Lin & self alone evening. Roy to

Glovers with Lennie & Maud.

Sunday 10 February

Lin interviewed by lady. Warmer. Alone to dinner. Lin & self walked up

Row, met Sir F. & Lady D. Hartland, Mr. A. Henderson & son, Sir Eyre

quietly Lin & self alone.

Monday 11 February

To Whiteley & to Maud’s. Lovely flowers. Whiteley lost top of my

coffee pot, pd. 3/6 & 1/6 for chocolates 5/-. Lin out luncheon.

Tuesday 12 February

Mr. Herkomer’s. Lin & Maud to Herkomer’s. Lin Roy & self dined

Maud’s. Most excellent dinner, flowers & table lovely. Long walk morg.

Wednesday 13 February

Roy & self alone. Whiteley about top of coffee pot lost! Long walk morg.

Thursday 14 Feb ruary

Roy to theatre. Miss Jones 4 - 7. 149 Glouc. Rd. I lunch at Mrs. Gill’s

1.30. State opening of Parliament. Vy. well served little luncheon.

Poached eggs, tarragon & cheese, cutlets, potatoes & cauliflower, apple

soufflé in soufflé dish, cheese etc, fruit. Hon Mrs. C. Russell, Mrs.

Walter, self & hostess. Called 3 on Ada Sp, Con, Midge, Sir J.Tenniel, &

Spencer.

Friday 15 February

Lady Dixon Hartland’s dinner 8 o’c. Roy dines at Mrs. Galbraith’s &

theatre after. Bitterly cold, snow. I sat between sub dean of Chapel Royal

& the archbishop of York. Party of 12, v. pleasant evg. Roy dining with

Galbraiths & theatre after, Carlton.

Saturday 16 February

V. cold walked morg. X ami. To matinée Criterion “The Noble Lord”.

Lin lunched out, met me at theatre. Bouchier spoils piece by fooling

about, not as good as “Second in Command”. Roy with Lennie & Maud

to Glovers, left cards on Mrs. Hohler & Lady Goring.

Sunday 17 February

In bed till 12.30. Beastly day blizzard of snow & sunshine occasionally.

Mr. & Mrs. A. Gill to dinner, he deadly dull. Miss Rose Innes called. Lin

to Club, home to dinner.

Monday 18 February

In bed till 12.30. Miss Jones called & had tea, discussed books. Quiet

evg. Lin & self alone. Beastly day. Roy at Glovers, returns tomorrow.

Tuesday 19 February

Lennie’s birthday. Maudie came in at 11.30 just returned from Glovers.

Beastly day pouring rain & snow, v. cold. Lin giving dinner to Mr.

Devitt, Lennie & Roy at Garrick, to music hall after.

Wednesday 20 February

In bed till 12.30. 3 o’c to Berthe, Whiteleys, got coffee pot knob &

flowers 1/6. Ordered fruit. Spencer, Ada, & Dora dining with Roy & self

8 o’c. V. cold. Lin in early, tired.

Thursday 21 February

Out at 3.30. Met darling Maud with M.P. on her way to me near Saviners,

got into her carriage. To Whiteleys, Mde Berthe, & M. to call. Tea here &

cozy chat. Roy looking v. seedy at dinner. Dined 9.30.

Friday 22 February

To Maud’s 4 o’c. Miss Gill & Maud Paxton here working. X. Ennuyant.

La Gaulois part heifer. To Midge’s, saw her & D. Heard of Eve Coward’s

engagement broken off, very sorry. Paid Whiteley’s book, ordered salt

beef. All mutton bad lately from Slaters. Roy out to dinner.

Saturday 23 February

Mrs. Medley at home 4 - 6. Mr. Mortimer Mempes Private View at Fine

Arts Society’s Gal, Bond St. Out morg shop’g. Met Mrs. Mackenzie. To

Royalty matinée “Mr. & Mrs. Daventry”. Mrs. P. Campbell. V. strong

play well acted. Lin met me there. Dined at public dinner, speeches, I to

Mrs. Medley’s dull at home, alone to dinner.

Sunday 24 February

Lin to Calais. Walked to enquire for C. Hunter, better, & fetched Eve C.

Walked to Derwent Lodge, Spencers away. Eve to lunch with me & long

talk over her engagement, seems happier. Stayed till 3.30. Frieda out.

Monday 25 February

Maud & Lennie dining at the Warre’s. Maud Paxton coming to us for

dinner & theatre. Lennie & Maud dined here with Maud Paxton. We all

went to see “Patience” Savoy after, 2 boxes! & to supper Savoy. V. late

& V. tired.

Mrs. Spielman’s dinner 8 o’c. Fairly amusing, felt deadly tired. Minnie

out. Miss Clarkes, Mrs Braunstein, Maggie Hadley & Mrs. Blair called.

V. cold.

Wednesday 27 February

Roy & self alone to dinner. Roy to Coronet after & on to Savoy. Darling

Maud fetched me & went out together.

Thursday 28 February

Lin dined at the Hon C. Lawrences, sat between Mrs. Lowther & Lady –

enjoyed it. To Marshalls morg. Called 3.30 with Maud at Lady Seton’s,

in, & Mrs. Macquoid, in. Roy dined at Maud’s. I alone in drawing room.

Friday 1 March

Lin to Mrs. Lowther’s at home. Glass of butter broken!!! Appt. 12 o’c Dr

Abrahams £2.2.0. Cabs 4/-. Flowers 2/-. To see Mortimer Mempes’

pictures Bond St. Lunched lady M. Watney. Sir Redvers Buller, Mr. J.

Fortescue & Mr. Watney there. Called on Miss Goodenough, Mrs. Lewis,

(illeg) Lady Hickman, had tea there. To Con’s, out, Mary Millais, in, &

Mrs. Kettle. Bee Bars called & went with me to Albert Hall Mans.

Saturday 2 March

Rain morg. Lin & self to Apollo theatre “Belle of Bohemia” too vulgar &

stupid for words. Theatre charming. Roy left for Glovers. Called on way

home to enquire for Lady Margaret Watney, Mrs. Hohler & Mrs.

Buckley. Quiet evg. Glass over clock broken!!!

Sunday 3 March

Walked with Lin fr. Hyde Pk. Corner home. Con & Lin to luncheon,

Effie in bed unable to come. Miss Rose Innes to dinner, left at 11 o’c.

Lovely spring day, windy. Centre piece broken!!!

Monday 4 March

Box Lyceum, Henry V. tonight & M.P, Lennie & Maud dined here,

Lennie v. tired, did not go. Maud, Maud Paxton, Lin & self went in

Maud’s carriage, new man drove madly & knocked up against om! I took

M. back, Lin & Roy in cab.

Tuesday 5 March

Sir Norman Lockyer, Lennie, Maud & M. Paxton dined here. Out at 3 o’c

to Miss Phillips dressmaker met Florrie Livesey & Tiney there. Called on

Effie Conrad & Maud to luncheon. To stores morning bought crystal salt,

4 pots O. marmalade, celery salt, ginger. Evelyn, Mrs. Macquiod, Mrs.

Lewis, Lennie, Maud & Mr. & Mrs Galbraith called. Lin gave business

dinner to Mr. Devitt, Lennie, Fritz J. & Roy, Garrick. Nothing settled. I

dined in drawing room alone.

Wet dark morg. Roy & self dine Maud’s. Frieda out. Did not go, too cold

& wet. Dined with Roy at Maud’s, only Lord Borthwick there. Pianola

evg. Lord B. plays well, but not as well as Lennie.

there, dinner of 24. Fearful light on table. Maud has dinner of 10 tonight.

Lin & self to matinée Her Majesty’s, alas one stall wasted came too late

to ask anyone. “Twelfth Night” perfect in every way. We both enjoyed it

immensely. Flowers 2/6, fruit 3/9. Roy dined at Maud’s, to theatre &

Savoy after.

Walked with Lin up Row, om. home. Lunched alone. Will Oakes, Sir

Arthur Trendall, Midge & Hamilton & Mr. Paxton called. Lennie &

Maud & Mrs. Turquand dined here. Roy bad cold. Sad news of Harold

Power’s death last Friday.

Monday 25 March

Bitterly cold. In all day. X. Ami. X. Roy’s cold very bad, in all day makes

Mrs. Warre’s dinner 8 o’c. Unable to go. Violent rheumatism shoulder &

arms. In bed till 12.30. Maudie came to luncheon, brought lovely flowers

& arranged them. Roy in bed all day with bad cold.

In bed all day rheumatism & ami. Roy up to luncheon out afternoon,

dined in drawing room, sat with me after. Box for “Sweet Nell of Old

& do pictures after, tea there. Unable to go out all day, pouring in

torrents. Frieda in bed all day. Roy dined at Mrs. Messel’s, went with

Len, Maud, Harold, Ruth, Hilda & 3 others to Palais & supper at Savoy

after.

All went to Nymans for day. Mrs. Brightmore & Mrs. Harvey & many

more there afternoon for Easter Eggs. Ottie, Mrs. L. there & a pretty little

fair girl. Mr. Gibbs called Glovers morg. thought he was a groom.

Tuesday 9 April

Lennie to City v. early. Maud & Eugenie to London for day, met them at

Horley. Lovely day. Lin at work here all day. Long walk with Lennie

evening.

Wednesday 10 April

Miss Milman’s wedding. Alternate wet & fine. Ruth came morg,

remained night. Harold came later & also remained night. Lin went to

meet Lennie at Red Hill in Victoria. Horse bolted morning with Lennie &

groom. Music evening.

Hursday 11 April

Ruth & Harold left at 11 o’c. Pouring wet day. Roy returned Stafford

Terrace from Pyt. Maud busy packing. Had long walk with Nurse F &

Nonie. V. tired after.

Friday 12 April

Darling Maud & Lennie left for London, Eugenie & (illeg) with them.

Roy dined with Maud & Lennie at Gloucester Terrace.

Saturday 13 April

Drove in to Crawley, bought fish fruit etc stamps. Pouring wet day. Took

Nurse F. & Baby with me in to Crawley. V. quiet day. Lin wrote. Roy

Wretched dull rainy day. In, did not go to Church. Roy crosses to Calais

with Lennie if they go, such a wretched day.

Monday 15 April

Mrs. Mount Batten. Cold fine morg. sunny. In all morg. writing, pouring

wet afternon. Nurse F. Baby self to Crawley for Baby’s shoes, fish,

stamps, lime water etc. Walked with Lin to corrugated iron place. Quiet

evg. Read Memories Madame du Barrie. Bed early. Nurse F. & Nana had

letters fr. darling Maud.

Tuesday 16 April

Heavy clouds v. cold intermediate sunshine. Baby cold & toothy. Went

walk with Lin. Dogs caught rabbits.

Wednesday 17 April

Lin & self walked thro’ wood to Greenings morning, lovely. Dogs caught

2 rabbits, large & wee one. Lin went up by 4 train. Dr Parker came to see

Baby, thinks only tooth trouble. Dr P. knew Sir E. Boehm & knows

Conrad.

Thursday 18 April

Lovely day cool wind. Out morg. with Nurse & Baby, & afternoon. Quiet

uneventful day. Darling Baby was stung by a bumble bee, blue bag soon

sent swelling down. Baby much better.

Friday 19 April

Glorious morg. Still no news of Maud & L. Baby much better. (note in

Saturday 20 April

Lovely day. Went for an hours drive at 3 o’c with Baby. V. quiet

uneventful day. Walked to wood with Nurse & Baby. Nurse F. met the

Hohler Baby. Baby much better.

To Church with Nana, walk after. Glorious day. Nurse F. met the Hohler

Baby. X. Ami.

Lin came by 12 o’c. Mrs. Messel came 10 o’c remained luncheon. X.

Long letter fr. darling Maud fr. Palermo. Lovely day. Bocani coming

today. No room. Newson in coachman’s house, wired to that effect.

Uncertain when Newsons cottage ready. Another letter fr. Maud, written

Mrs. Medley 4 - 6. Miss Thorneycroft 11 - 7, Melbury Rd. Lin came 4

o’c, was met Red Hill, dog cart & Joe. Mr. Marriott to luncheon & tea,

cycled fr. Red Hill. Gathered primroses with Nonie boy. Cold wind.

Lovely day cold wind. Did not go to Church. Walked with Lin to

Vic to Red Hill with Lin at 9.20. Took 1 hour & ten minutes walking up

hill. Lovely drive. Paid Nana for washing by cheque £2.12.10. Nurse F.

Walked to post morg. No letter fr. darling M. Packed. Washed & ironed

collars.

Mrs. Kemp 3 – 6, 110 Piccadilly. Returned by 4.41 fr. Glovers. Baby &

“Man fr. Blankleys” box! after. V. good. Cap’t Marshall sat just near us

1st row stalls. Back to Academy after. Roy home for lunch & dinner.

Quiet evg. Roy been to see Edna May again! Ada Sp. called.

Lin & Roy to Calais. V. fine day. Went at 11.30 to Hyde Park Corner.

Met Ethel & Mervyn, sat with them in Park. Met Hamilton & Dora, home

in cab. Mervyn & Ethel to luncheon, left 3.30. Edgar & Midge came to

tea, had long talk. Lin & Roy enjoyed their day.

Mrs. Allen & Mr. & Mrs. F. Holden besides our host & hostess, all most

kind. Very tired evg. billiard room. 50 rooks shot! Not 400.

Lovely day, sat out morg. & drove with Mrs. H. round Chesterfield, drive

lovely. After huge mid day dinner of 9 courses & dessert. On Lake, then

tea, & at 5.30 in dog cart with Mr. Holden, Arthur Linley & Lin to

Norton.

Returned from Renishaw by 4 train. V. delightful visit. Heaps of letters

Queen twice, called Midge’s, saw D. To enquire Lady Hickman’s

Thursday 23 May

Mrs. Alec Tweedie, Mrs. J. Ferguson, Mrs. Pirrie, Thomson. Mr. & Mrs.

Messel’s dinner. Lin went alone. I called Mrs. Pirrie, Mrs. Leyland. Met

darling Maud & Lennie on their return fr. Italy at Vic. Saw Maud off at

once to Glovers. Lin met them at Calais & returned with me.

Friday 24 May

Mrs. Rayner, 35 Devonshire Place. Came to Glovers by 4.5. Great crowd

at Vic. Otley met me there had hat box smashed in, luckily nothing of

value in it! Nonie & Nurse F. met me Horley Sta. Found Lennie & Maud

v. well. La fille M. partie ce matin !!! Glovers looking lovely. Les deux

hommes ici font le service en table beauc. meilleur que les filles.

Saturday 25 May

Long letter fr. dear Roy fr. Chichester, well & v. happy there. Lin came

by afternoon train to Red Hill. Mr. & Mrs. Hohler, Miss Venning & Miss

Burke to tea & croquet, stayed till 7 o’c. Smart girls & clever or amusing.

Sunday 26 May

To Church & Nymans. Nurse F & Nonie also. Lennie & Lin in dog cart,

selves brougham. Lovely day Mr. & Mrs. Messel seem much brighter &

happier alone there & not the restraint indescribable(?) of when family is

there. Home in time for dinner.

Monday 27 May

Lady Monckton, 29 Cranley Gds. Mrs. Spielman, Mrs. McLaren. Mrs.

Palgrave Simpson. Lovely day. Quiet day. Lennie & Maud to Mrs.

Hohler’s tennis. Con arrived at 5.30. Small cart missed him, came in fly

from station.

Tuesday 28 May

Maud at 12 to Mrs. Hohler’s, no, Wed tomorrow. Quiet day, read &

worked. V. hot. Maud to meet Lennie. Music evg.

Wednesday 29 May

Mrs. Macmillan, 22 Devonshire Place. Mrs. Kemp. Linley left by 4 train

for London. Maud with Hohlers to Reigate Horse Show. No lunch or tea

until 7 o’c evg!!! Garden watered. Music evg.

Mrs. Ferguson. Sir Norman Lockyer 9 o’c at the Solar Physics

Observatory, entrance Princes Gate, Exhibition Road. Rain & dull. Maud

to meet Lennie & Harold who came with him fr. town, looks fearfully ill.

Quiet day. Con looking wonderfully well. Darling Baby dressed up in

French soldier’s suit met Lennie at gate!

Friday 31 May

Lovely day. Maud & Baby met Lennie Horley, Victoria. Watered flowers

evg. Con returned Brighton for day, returns tomorrow. Nouvelles à cause

des affairs de Ruth.

Saturday 1 June

Mrs Mount Batten 4 - 6. Maud to London, lunching Stafford Terrace, &

goes with Lin to Lord Ludlow’s sister’s wedding at Temple, returns with

Lin tonight. Con returns 4 o’c. I drove to station with Maud & Baby.

Sunday 2 June

Mrs. J.Carlisle 4 - 7. Con, Lennie, Maud & self to Church. Walked evg.

to Greenings, lovely. Quiet evg.

Mrs. Spielman. Mrs. McLaren. Lovely day gardening. Today’s diary

written as 4th June by mistake. Quiet day. Harold with Lennie to

Chelsfield & sleep there in Con’s room. Lin spending day at Chichester

with Roy.

Tuesday 4 June

X. Mr. & Mrs. Ansdell dined Glovers. Pay for 12 Allotted Whihi shares

£12.0.0. Paid them. Lovely day, did gardening. Lennie & Harold to

Cuckfield for Volunteering & both returned to dinner. V. late dinner. M,

Lin, Con & self dined 8 o’c. Lin spent day at Chichester with dear Roy v.

well & happy there. Bazaar at Crawley. Maud to Mrs. Hohler’s.

Wednesday 5 June

Lady Richmond 4 - 7. Lin & I return from Maud’s, Lin early, I by 4.

Decided to go tomorrow self on account of Derby. Lin drew 2nd (illeg)

favourite, William III, Garrick Sweep, worth about £15. Lin left early on

cycle. The Rector dined Glovers.

Returned by 4.41 fr. Glovers. Darling Maud & Nonie saw me to station.

Dear Lin with tooth ache & looks v. seedy in consequence. Stale fowl

dinner.

Friday 7 June

Mr. & Mrs. Johnson Ferguson dinner 8 oc. Asked Miss White to call

before 11 or between 1.30 & 4 o’c. Lovely day, cooler than at Glovers.

Bird escaped, caught it again No 26. V. tired no rest with White & every

room in a mess. Most interesting dinner sat between Sir F.D.Hartland &

Mr. Pilkington MP. Miss Fowler authoress asked me to call, delightful

person.

Saturday 8 June

Young Laurence’s marriage to Miss McGaw, Mickleham. Went matinée

see Edna May who fainted in “Girl up there”. V. pretty music. Called

Midge, out. Quiet evg.

Sunday 9 June

Lovely day. Edgar & Sophy called just as Lin & self were starting for

Park, went with us. S. cross, E. depressed. Alone lunch. Lin to Sir A.

Hickman’s tennis. Mr. Bret Harte called had interesting talk, he full of

anecdotes. Alone evg. Freda out morg, Minnie afternoon.

Monday 10 June

X. Lovely day. Expecting Edgar to luncheon. Long letter fr. Maud. X.

Paid £2 for ½ share of £1 Waihi allotted. Lady Quilter called, out. Edgar

lunched here & drove after to enquire Hickmans.

Mrs. Temple at home, 74 Portland Place. Mrs. Magne 4 - 7. Met darling

M. at Vic. Drove straight home. Mabel & Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Spofforth

Mrs. Burnand’s small dance, unable to go. In morg. Wet afternoon, called

party good band. Met Miss Fowler again. Roy home, v. lively & looks

well. Most cheery evening. Called on Mrs. Wagg & Mrs. McKenna &

Lady Mackenzie.

Hart’s at home. Out morg. in cab with M. Lennie to Glovers today. Roy

tennis. Maudie returned Glovers, Roy saw her off. Midge came & Harold

Mrs. J. Carlisle 4 - 7. Bury planting fern cases all over house morg. Maud

Paxton wrote invitation cards for me for Tuesday next. Roy in to lunch,

grumbled. Rested & Dora came 4 o’c. Met H. Carlisle, Lady Fenton,

Miss Holland, etc & Monte Carlo contingent. Music, singing, cold wind,

dullish party. Dora back to dinner.

Tuesday 18 June

Minnie out afternoon & evg. Roy returned Chichester. Mrs. Temple, 74

Portland Place. The Astronomer Royal reception Greenwich Observatory

3 - 6 PM. Lady Ellis launch & dinner party 11.50 Waterloo & Staines.

Only Mrs. Bergheim called & Miss Boteler. Nurse F. & Baby & Maud

came in time for luncheon. Maud returns Glovers afternoon, took Baby

doctor’s. We drove Lady E’s, Mr F.C.B. took me in to dinner, Sir W.

Agnew & staff there! Baby slept here.

Col. Welby’s dinner, unable to go. X. Waihi half share. Ranelagh, can’t

go. Mrs. C. Corbett 5 o’c. Mrs. Ainsworth. Maud & Lennie come, dine

Felt strangely giddy, odd have had it constantly lately. Went alone 4 o’c

Whiteleys, Babillons, Marshalls & Berthe. M. sleeping when I left. V.

glad as Lennie & Maud dine with Mr. Fleishman & go to Agnews ball,

Lin also. I too seedy.

Friday 21 June

The Astronomer Royal’s reception 3 to 6 Greenwich Obsevatory. Miss

Neaves garden party 4 - 7. Mrs. Gill’s dinner, can’t go. Quiet evg. here.

Lennie left morning, Maud remaining on until tomorrow.

Saturday 22 June

Mrs. J.Carlisle 4 - 7. Mrs. Braunstein’s dinner 8 o’c. Maud returned

Glovers after luncheon. Out all morg. alone shop’g. No one called.

Delightful dinner – 10. Mr. & Mrs. Bryce (lovely Irish woman) Miss

Gardiner, Mons. Taxas Greek Minister, Mr. & Mrs. Moberly Bell. Lin

lost 15/- Bridge.

Sunday 23 June

Fine day v. windy. In all day. Lin to Sir A. Hickman. Freda out morg.

Silver & brass awful. Quiet peaceful day, saw no one. Lin & self alone

dinner.

Monday 24 June

Mrs. Medley’s dinner 8 o’c. Out morg. shops. Maudie to luncheon,

brought lovely flowers, wild roses, branches, & arranged them with me in

drawing room. Returned Glovers by 5 o’c train. Hope the darling will not

be over tired.

Tuesday 25 June

X. At home here 4 - 7. Maud up early. Quantity flowers, cream, butter,

chicken etc. Brought James who announced guests. Band good 2, piano

violin. Waiter 10/-, policemen 6/- unneccessary. Found I had too much

& many of everything. Great success. 77 came out of 150 asked.

Strawberries & cream, iced coffee & tea most in request. Maud Lin &

self alone to dinner.

Most anxious news of Baby, Maud unable to come up today. Bringing

Baby to see Victor Horseley tomorrow. Most disquieting, poor darling’s

first real trouble. No one called. Awful day poured in torrents. Out morg.

Wednesday 3 July

Mrs. Welby lunching here. Postponed on account of Baby. Met M. &

Baby 10.45 Vic & went to Mr. Victor Horseley. Satisfactory report,

muscles of neck swollen to be rubbed. Darling boy looked as pretty &

sweet as ever. Lunch & tea here. M. & self after lunch to Mrs. Young’s &

left by 5 train Horley. Baby met us Vic. Minnie only out.

Thursday 4 July

Tea Lords Mrs. Huish behind the drags. Mrs. Causton 4 - 7. Darling M.

came up time for luncheon. At 4 to Lords. Lovely day. Saw Weigalls etc.

V. pleasant tea at Mrs. Huish’s under trees & near flowers. Saw Maud off

Vic. Dull empty at home Mrs. C’s, old frumps only. Quiet evg. alone with

Lin.

Friday 5 July

Tea Lords Mrs. Huish. Darling M. up for luncheon. To Lords 4 o’c. Mr.

H. sent us 2 Lords tickets. B.W. stood behind us but did not see us. Saw

many more friends today. Lovely day. Tea again Mrs. Huish. Quiet evg.

here v. late dinner. Saw Maud off at Vic in her own conveyance fr. Lords,

sent Otley home. Bonnet 25/9 fr. Maison Nouvelle.

Lady Anne Blunt’s sale Arabs & luncheon Crabbet Pk. 1 o’c lunch.

Shop’g morg. to Berthe’s no further with dress, tiresome people.

Trimmed up creeper & did flowers till 4 o’c. Read Napoleon III. Dined

7.30. Lin & self to Court to see “Women are so serious”, Ellis Jeffings.

V. funny. Saw F. Simon there. Wore White’s bodice copied fr. Maud’s.

Ami. X. peu, drôle. Dull day. Lin to Sir A. Hickman’s tennis. In all day.

Midge came & stayed all afternoon. Miss Rose Innes called stayed late &

I felt exhausted as I always do after her visits. Emma out evg. Minnie

Unable to go alas! Mrs. Stannard’s at home to meet Sarah Bernhardt.

Cannot go anywhere, little F. so bad. Wrote Mrs. Routh last night I

unable to go. Lin enjoyed R’s dinner muchly, company dinner & wine.

White here for day, v. slow worker. Darling M. up for Lords Eton &

Harrow, & dear Roy from Dover looking splendid & in great form, never

remember him better. He took M. to Lords after lunch & M. left from

there for Vic Sta. 5.6 train. Roy out to dinner. I dined alone. Flowers

lovely M.

Dull close morg. Lin very restless all night after Mr. John Penn’s dinner,

heat tries him so much. Darling M. came to luncheon unexpectedly

bringing James. Left 2 o’c for Kings X to stay with Mr. Allan. Roy to

Lords. Lin off taking photos model, home luncheon.

Col & Mrs. Bosanquet dine here 7.30. Roy returns tonight to Dover.

Maud & Lennie staying with Mr. Allan. Mr. Hogan called to see Roy

Mrs. B. Partridge’s dinner 8 o’c. Maud up fr. Mr. Allan’s, here for

luncheon, left at 4 o’c. Dora standing for Lin, here to luncheon. Very

pleasant dinner of 8 at Mrs. P’s. Sir Bruce & Lady Seton, Mr. & Mrs.

F.C.B. stayed v. late. Mr. Burnand in grand form. Depressed over

pending operation to start with but soon cheered up.

Tuesday 16 July

Mrs. Ainsworth’s dinner 8 o’c. Bought 1/- worth flowers Barkers. To be

fitted Lady’s Asso. Darling M. not here, no letter. Mrs. Hunter, Fanny

Nembhard, Miss Rose Innes, Midge & Dora & Miss Tenniel called. 20 at

Mrs. A’s to dinner. Met Mr. Huish’s sister & husband there. Mr. Bruce &

Mr. Huntingdon sat on my two sides, former interesting.

Wednesday 17 July

Mrs. Bainbridge’s at home 9.30, Grafton Galleries. Mr. Vivian’s at home

24 Eaton Sqre. Fearfully hot, in a bath all day! Morg. to Lady’s in om,

ordered hat. To Mr. Vivian’s at home. V. odd, can’t understand him or

his, left soon, people feeding as if they had never been fed before. Called

on Mrs. Beer, in, like her. Stores for my wee bag. Called on Mrs.

Wallace.

Lunch with Midge. V. good luncheon well served & peaceful, delicious

the absence of hurry scurry. Out at 5 o’c to shop & enquired for Mr.

E.Reed, better.

Friday 19 July

V. hot. Miss White here for day, works better if with her, desperately

slow alone. To Marshalls ordered black canvas dress. Quiet evening. Roy

returns fr. Dover dined 7 & off to theatre. Edgar called morg. to thank

Lin, offer of Chatham ap’t fr. Sir E.Wood.

Saturday 20 July

Mrs. Harley’s daughter’s wedding 2.30. Mrs. F.Gordon 4 - 7, Bentley

Priory. In all day. Lovely v. hot. Roy left by 4.30. I wish he would give

his mind to intellectual pursuits, seems full of Gaiety songs & girls. Lin

& self after dinner to “Sweet & Twenty” charming. Met Dickens.

To Marshalls & stores to order Baby’s mail cart, to be sent off tomorrow

morg. £1.7.6 & Maud’s birthday present £1.9.10. Quiet evening.

Tuesday 23 July

Only Lady Lockwood called. Col & Mrs. Welby & Miss Innes dined

here. Went to stores morg. Most tiring spent 15/10 on fringe, flowers, fish

etc, £1 wine. V. pleasant evg. tho’ disappointed in Weld Blundell &

Judge Bacon.

Wednesday 24 July

Academy Soirée 9 o’c. To dine 7 Miss Rose Innes & to Opera, Melba

“Romeo & Juliet”. Miss White here for day. Felt v. tired. Lin out to

lunch. Mr. Kelly at Miss Innes had to leave Opera House. I enjoyed it

immensely. Saw in distance Mr. Livesey, Mr. Vivian & Mrs. Evans. Lin

to Academy Soirée.

Thursday 25 July

Awful storm lasted nearly all day. Lin much detained with work. Model

late. Put away part of silver.

Saturday 27 July

Mrs. Messel, Nymans. Pouring wet stormy day. Packed up drawing room

furniture with Minnie morning, 1½ hour only doing it tho’ roughly. To

see exquisite Spanish paintings at Guildhall. Roy arrived during dinner fr.

Arundel.

Sunday 28 July

V. hot. Lin at home working on Xmas drawing. Wrote, packed, & put

things straight in drawers etc. No one came. Lin, Roy & self dinner, bed

early.

Came to darling Maud’s by 2 train with Roy. Dull day some rain fine

later, v. hot. Met Miss Venning & maid at Station. Found Miss Phillips,

Conrad & Harold here. Seven to dinner.

Tuesday 30 July

Gorious day. Len, Maud, Con, Miss Phillips & Roy to Goodwood.

Harold left by early train. Had lovely quiet day here but miss Baby v.

much. All came back in good spirits but had lost all round. Dined at 8 &

sat out after. Letter fr. Lin.

Wednesday 31 July

Lovely day. Letter fr. Lin, v. tired fr. work & heat. Quiet day in garden.

Slept well & less dead mornings.

Thursday 1 August

Lovely day. To Goodwood with Lennie & Maud’s party, Mr. Clement,

Violet Phillips, Con & Roy. Mrs. Hohler & Miss Venning meeting us at

Three Bridges Sta. Mr. Messel’s party 10 fr. Nymans, 17 in all.

Delightful day. Lost all my money as usual. Edgar refused ap’t. offered

by Sir E.Wood, Chatham. Lin came, here for dinner! 8.30 o’c.

Lovely day. Lin working comfortably in his dressing room. Sat out all

day more or less. Violet & Mr. C. amusing themselves. Lennie came

down v. tired. Lin & Roy for cycle ride evg.

Saturday 3 August

Mrs. Hohler’s cricket match & luncheon party on lawn. Violet, Mr.

Clement, Maud, Lennie & self to match after lunch. Con & Roy to lunch

H’s. Violet left & Mr. & Mrs. Hemming came. Mrs. H. plays charmingly.

Violet’s departure caused depression! To 3 people!

Dull day, rain, cloud. Mr. Clement left at 2.15. Con & Roy drove in with

Lin went up at 4 o’c. Sat out. Maud tired, c’d not go to Mrs. Hohlers.

Lennie, Harold & Mr. Henning, Roy & Con still here. Lennie v. tired evg.

Forgot himself entirely about Lady Grove, unworthy subject for heated

discussion. Songs, music. Dull evg, darling tired, miss Lin’s bright

humour.

Thursday 8 August

Maudie slept badly & looked v. seedy. Lennie much better evg. & all

quieter. Went with Maud & Mrs. Hemming to call on Mrs. Robinson, Mr.

Tate’s sister, & tea at Mrs. Heron’s. Miss Chapman there, kindred spirit.

Peaches. Harold here evg. Hope darling Maud will sleep tonight. Sir John

Heron - Massington’s son has joined Mr. Messel’s firm.

Con & Roy left by 12 train. Con for Henley, Roy indefinite! Mrs. Heron

& Miss Chapman to tea. Swarm of ants on Maud’s hat playing croquet.

“Palatine” cruise indefinitely postponed, Mrs. Watney & Dr Barker ill.

X. Providential no worse, horse got rein under tail. Mr. & Mrs. Messel

Pouring wet day. Fine later. Ethel Clifford left. Fine wasp slaughter.

Lovely at 11.30. Nana & self in brougham to meet darling Baby arrive fr.

Littlehampton, looked lovely & full of health. Saw him off in Messel

carriage for Nymans. M. & self in Vic to Horley to see E.C. off. M. saw 2

Lovely day. Lennie & M. to Nymans in Vic & pair, luggage in 4 wheel

dog cart & run away horse! Lin sent 3 brace of grouse fr. Vernon Watney.

Grey horse behaved well. Lennie kept coachman, Vic & pair Nymans,

Wire Lin arriving 5 tonight, also new footman. Grey pony met him &

man. Lovely day. Nana having thorough turn out Hall. Groom & grey

Propose going to Tabs. Went to Tisbury by 3 train, £1.10.0. Lin got me

pass. Cab 3/- porters 1/-. Found Tabs, Gwen, Eve & 2 boys & Miss

Holland only there. Mrs. Benett Stanford & a Miss Murray playing

tennis. Pyt looks larger after 2 years absence.

Saturday 24 August

Lin to Mr. Wolff’s until next Sunday. Went with Tabs & Gareth to tea at

Col & Mrs. Besta, nice family, saw young Grove a handsome boy & Miss

Farquharson there. Marcia. Lovely drive. The Wimbledon Schwanns

taken “Fern” for 6 months. Miss H.V. nice person.

Lovely day. Read morg & wrote, afternoon rested with fire. Some acidity

& indigestion fr. 1.30 to 4.30! So no better for it! Walked after. Quiet

Monday 26 August

Gale blowing. To call with Tabs & Miss Holland at Fern on the

Schwanns, not arrived. Do not care for place. Marcia Farquharson came

for night on her bicycle, sings & plays divinely.

Blowy dull morg. Wrote letters, listened to Miss Farquharson. Drove to

Garden party. Walked & saw drains v. complicated. Garden party &

tournament great success. Ld & Lady Stalbridge, Lady Queensberry,

Lady Grove, Mrs. Best, Mrs. B. Stanford, Gordens, Edens etc. Dead tired

& had to pack.

Thursday 29 August

Miss Penruddock returned with me from Pyt as far as Salisbury. Tabs &

Miss H. left by early train. Unpacked here & went off to Norfolk Hotel

where I dined with Mervyn, Ethel, Midge & Tabbie. Sat in Mervyn’s

room after whilst they finished packing. Cab there & back.

Friday 30 August

Up at 7, off at ¼ to 9 to Norfolk Hotel. Went in cab with Midge & Tabs

to see Mervyn & Ethel off on “Gothic” for New Zealand. Fine ship,

uninteresting passengers. Had champagne in Mervyn’s cabin &

impromptu lunch. Saw ship tugged off, back to Fenchurch St. Sta. Saw

Midge off & Tabs & I separated at Metropolitan.

Saturday 31 August

Went of to Tabbie 10 o’c. Cab 2/-. £1 store Bond St. Walked down Bond

St. Lunched at Norfolk, beastly. To Waterloo with Tabs saw her off.

Heavy rain. Om home 9d, papers 2d. To bed early. Cold chicken.

21” excellent. Fildes there, Alexander, Trees, Levis etc.

Out shops. Miss White here fitting blue silk bodice. Paid her 6/6 for black

Tate wedding! Unable to go. Fearful headache again & dzziness. X. Evg.

Saw Nash foreman about kitchen passages.

In bed 12.30. Read & finished “Tristram of Bluet” Anthony Hope, good.

Sat with Lin worked, read. Dined 9.30. V. tired.

Attempted assassination of Mr. Mackinlay American President! Fine. Bed

till 2 o’c. Luke Fildes with Lin to see “Kitty Grey” in my place! White

here at 4. Cut out flan. bodice & altered blue silk just made, 12/6 for

Close stuffy day. In bed till 12.30. Read all day & wrote Maud & Roy.

Lin v. late at club after theatre with L.Fildes, 2 o’c, consequently tired.

Took out his perfectly sound tooth & depressed therewith!

In bed till 12.30. Read “A Master of Craft” Jacobs, tiresome. After

luncheon Minnie packed my boxes, ready by 6 o’c. Close stuffy day.

To Lairg for Highland Games. Lady M. gave away prizes. Bag pipes

Died 7.30 from failure of heart action due to shock fr. shooting & much

Strange April day! Heavy showers & sunshine, strong wind. Edgar &

Sophy dine here. Lin returns from Mr. Lawrence’s. Arranged flowers all

morg!!! Lin brought 2½ brace partridges. V. pleasant evg. but Roy looks

X. Roy v. seedy heavy & feverish. Went to City, returned whilst we were

at luncheon. Maud & self for walk to ask Dr O. to come, & to enquire

Mrs. de la Penha. Dr O. came. Roy v. feverish, to bed after tea.

Tuesday 8 October

To Mrs. Corbett’s, Gourach until 15th. Unable to go till Saty. Roy in bed

still, Orton coming. Roy feverish in bed all day. Evelyn called brim full

of her engagement which goes on well.

Lovely day. Orton came. Roy’s temperature over 100, remains in bed.

Lovely day v. warm. Walked with Maud, feel much better self. Bath chair

arrived & M. went in it to Post with Nonie, Hobbs & Nurse. Maud very

Wired return home tomorrow. Lennie goes to Nymans for shoot there. I

sleep with Maud. Went for long drive with Conrad in Lennie’s dog cart.

Returned morg fr. Maud’s, Glovers. Con drove me to Station with grey.

Vic Sta. all decorated for King & Queen’s return with Duke & Duchess

of York. Dinner late. Mr. Holland sent me 2 grouse & 2 pheasants.

X. Minnie leaves & Amy Bateman comes X. Mr. Galbraith called tea

time, had talk with him. Lin with Mr. De Pass shooting, returned to

dinner bringing 2 pheasants. Roy out after dinner.

Lin & Roy off to Glovers. Mistake about train! Fog. Tilda & self walked

to Midge’s, out. Mr. Congreve & Mr. Rich staying there!!! Freda out

Lin & Roy return. Fog. Toula left for Park. Went to her doctor early & for

walk with me, v. foggy & cold. Expected Midge & Dora. Unable to come

Friday 8 November

Came to Glovers by 4.15 train. Nurse F. with me, & Dr Pollock. Found

Maud in bed, Nurse Millie there. Has to lie up until Monday & go up to

Gloucester Ter. in invalid carriege. Dr P. left by 7 o’c train. Had v.

narrow shave of prematuire birth.

Saturday 9 November

To Pyt for 2nd shoot until Wednesday, unable to go. Lin went to Pyt

alone. Eve C. to town. Geoff & Conrad coming until Monday. Took

Nonie for walk until Nurse F. had finished linen. Maudie tired.

Sunday 10 November

Geoff & Con to Church. In all day. Much annoyed by loud talking of the

two nurses, odd as both are quiet alone. Gets on one’s nerves.

Monday 11 November

Came up fr. Glovers by 2.44 train, invalid carriage for Maud. Mrs.

Messel, Sington, Eve C. & Otley met us. Sent on M. Nurse Millie & Eve

in brougham, hired India (illeg) I with om. & Otley. Returning to dine

alone in drawing room Staf. Ter. Saw darling Maud in to bed, v. tired

poor darling.

Tuesday 12 November

Breakfasted in bed & walked to Queens Road, om. on to Maud. Found

her looking much better, Mrs. Messel & Eve C. there. Mr. M. had been.

Mrs. Hohler & Mrs. Messel (again) to Maud’s at tea time. Waited & saw

Dr P. M. comes to me Saturday when Nurse Millie leaves.

Wednesday 13 November

Return from Pyt. Out morg. shops. Wet & dull. Met Eve C. To Maud’s

after luncheon, found her better on sofa. Eve C. Maud Paxton & Ruth M.

called & had tea. Nurse Millie at Stores for Maud. Darling looking better.

Otley met Lin at Waterloo 7 o’c fr. Pyt. E. & new maid out.

Mrs. Roger Wallace. Maudie bad toothache in bed all day. Man fr.

Whiteley about gate. Some man called 12 o’c to interview Lin. Midge’s

illness miscarriage!!! Orton as usual no good. Consultation Saturday with

Dr Pollock who discovered it.

Mrs. Wallace, Mabel, Ruth & Mrs. Messel called. M’s tooth v. bad poor

darling, no rest. Mr. Herbert came twice but only probed a little, afraid of

hurting her. Mrs. Nembhard & May, Mrs. Romer, called. Elsie Mills

expecting in Dec. Out morg.

Maud’s tooth v. bad, better later. Hilda Messel & Mrs. M. called. No,

Hilda only came & sat some time after tea. 4 cablegrams fr. Lennie. Went

Dinner at Lord Chief Justice ¼ to 8. Felt v. seedy. Out morg. shops.

Maud Eve & Nonie in carriage shop’g & Crawfurd brought Nonie as

Nurse was ill. Eve had to take him home, naughty. Sat between Lord

Chelmsford & Mr. Justice Darling. Most interesting talk. Introduced to

Sir Fleetwood Wilson & Mrs. Moon. 24 to dinner. Mrs. P. Simpson,

Desirée Welby, Miss Jones. Nurse Millie came.

Wednesday 27 November

Went with Maudie morg. Face all swollen & feel horribly seedy

generally. M. & self tried to walk but had to get into carriage again, so

seedy. Fine couple. Darling Nonie with Nurse F. Nonie getting v. naughty

& quaint. Maud Paxton & Lady Margaret to tea, latter full of Buller

controversy. M. & self dined in drawing room. Lin home in carr. fr.

Punch dinner.

Mrs. Messel’s dinner 8 o’c. Accepted for both. Unable to go my face all

swollen & feel generally bad, for no reason, maddening. Lin met no one

In bed till tea time, feel v. seedy & weak. Had to return 2 matinée stalls

“Second in Command”. Dora to tea. Nurse F. goes for fortnight’s holiday,

Nurse Maud in her place. Maudie had bad night, went for drive with

Maud P. Lin working all day, lovely drawing.

Sunday 1 December

Waihi to be paid, 15/- to pay up fully. Let Bank know as they hold

certificate. Mrs. George Armstrong at home. Maudie out Bath chair

morning, escaped convict drawing her!!! Lin to club for luncheon. Dora

dines here. Mr. Bret Harte, Mr. Blair & Harold called! Dora dined here,

Maudie in her room.

Monday 2 December

Lady Monckton. Maud letter fr. Lennie. Eve & Maud to Glouc Ter. for

lunch. I fetched them at 4 o’c. Drove to Serpentine in Maud’s carriage &

walked home. Felt better for air.

Tuesday 3 December

Walked down Row morg, had brougham, met Ruth & Muriel riding. Feel

v. seedy. Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Palgrave Simpson, Mabel & Mrs. Wallace

called.

Wednesday 4 December

Nonie to lunch. Did not come. Maud & self to Gloucester Ter. to do

flowers & unpack before luncheon. All looks v. nice there. Had quiet

afternoon here together & dined in drawing room. Freda out. Played

Patience. Sent Otley midnight to meet Lennie & Roy Euston.

Thursday 5 December

Desirée Welby’s dinner 8 o’c. Lennie arrived Euston with Roy midnight.

Sent Otley to meet them. Lennie came here, found him in Maud’s bed

this morg! Roy & Lennie here to lunch both well. Roy delighted with

America & Americans. Mrs. Messel called to see Lennie. Roy dined at

Maud’s & slept there. Darling much upset going, so weak. She & Lennie

to Glouc. Ter. 5 o’c. Miss her dreadfully. V. pleasant dinner. Met Lady

Buxton who asked me to call.

Mr. W. Stone’s dinner 8 o’c. Unable to accept. To Maud’s, found her

better, much. She returned with me to luncheon & Roy & Lennie came at

2.30 & lunched. After tea they went off, Roy staying there another night.

Both vaccinated tonight!! Darling M. left here at 6 o’c, tired. C’d not lie

down in her stays here as Lennie & Roy were here.

Saturday 7 December

To matinée with Lin “The last of the Dandies” v. good. To see Maud on

way back. They had been to “Kitty Grey” taking Roy who is still there.

Con comes to us tomorrow for 2 nights.

Sunday 8 December

Maud, Lennie, Roy & Con dined here. Con remains. Lin & self for walk

morg. Beastly weather, rain & horrid generally. Maudie looks fairly well

only.
