Principal’s message……..

Welcome to week 5 of the term! We are halfway through our first term and students have settled

in well to their daily routines.

Foundation Students

Our Foundation students have now been at school for four weeks and have settled in so well.

Starting primary school is a major milestone for a child. The first years are an exciting and

engaging time. Building positive relationships and experiences in the early years is important to

long-term development, learning and wellbeing. Our Foundation students are doing a marvellous

job in class learning about their Milo Monkey sounds and letters. Next Wednesday 6th March will

be the last Wednesday that our Foundation students are not required at school for classes.

However, we shall be holding Parent-Teacher Interviews on this day (March 6th

) for our Foundation

students only. You should have received a letter home on Monday providing you with the details

on how to book your parent-teacher interview online for you to meet with your child’s teacher.

Mrs Anketell (Room 7) and Mrs Cusack (Room 8) will be available from 11:30am – 6:30pm for 15

minute interviews to discuss your child’s progress and transition into our school.

Foundation students will commence attending school every day after the long weekend.

For parents of Foundation students…….

How your child reacts to starting school will depend on their personality, their previous experience

and how prepared they were for this next big step in their lives. By now they'll probably be

responding to school in a variety of ways and most children will be experiencing some change –

after all they’ll be learning, playing and interacting with new people and getting used to a whole

new environment – and it may take some of them time to settle in.

Helping Your Child Learn

As we begin to settle into the school year and start establishing daily routines, I would like to draw your attention to

some research which highlights the importance of spending time to read and interact with your children.

Reading to Young Children: A Head-Start in Life

The research sets out to explore the connections between parents reading to their young children and their child’s later

reading and other cognitive skills.

Key Findings

The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a direct causal effect on their schooling outcomes regardless of

their family background and home environment.

· Reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and cognitive skills (i.e.,

language and literacy, numeracy and cognition) later in life.

· Reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s reading skills at age 4

-5 as being six months older.

· Reading to them 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months older.

· Children read to more frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on the National Assessment Program – Literacy and

Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for both Reading and Numeracy in Year 3 (age 8 to 9).

· These differences in reading and cognitive skills are not related to the child’s family background or home environment

but are the direct result of how frequently they have been read to prior to starting school.

This research is a result of a partnership arrangement between the Department of Education and the Melbourne Insti-

tute of Applied Economic and Social Research.

Parents & Friends

Our Parent & Friends Club will be holding their AGM next Monday 4th

March at 2pm in the Parent Club room (enter via

Canteen door). All members of our school community are welcomed to attend. Regular monthly meetings are held on

the first Monday of the month at 2:30pm. Please think about your availability to join Parents & Friends – it is a social way

to meet others, as well as supporting your child’s school.

After school

We are finding that quite a number of our students are crossing over to the Crusoe College side and waiting in their

grounds for older siblings or friends to be dismissed at 3:10pm. This is not appropriate. We are not entitled to enter

their grounds or wait inside their school perimeter – it is unsupervised and Crusoe College are still in their learning time.

For those KFPS students who are required to wait for older siblings who attend Crusoe College you are required to re-

main in our school amphitheatre until the Crusoe College bell sounds, and only then will you be permitted to leave our

school grounds and move to the crossing area.

Students who are not expected to wait for older siblings attending Crusoe College should move home promptly after

our 3pm bell and not choose to linger at the crossing area.

School Council Elections

Our call for nominations for the 2018-20 School Council term close this Friday at 4pm.

Thought of the week: All children can learn, but not always in the same way and not always on the same day. (Art Costa)

Kind Regards,

Kim Saddlier

Bonnie

As we welcome Bonnie, our school dog, into our hearts and classrooms we must remember the 3 main expectations for helping Bonnie learn to relax in our school. 1. We say hello to the person and NOT the dog. (We must not use the name of the dog) 2. We give the dog space when moving past or nearby 3. We keep moving and do not stand and stare. We can not pat Bonnie as she is still learning to relax in our school which has so many new sights, smells, noises, movements and energy. Thank you to parents, students and staff for your support.
