16. PAGE 1 CHALLENGES IN DOING UN BUSINESS Financial or
business challenges / opportunities: Tender size (USD) rather small
for consultancy companies UN Agencies maximum fee levels for
purchasing consultancy services - including training, installation
and commissioning services of equipment vendors - are in general
very low UN is a fairly reliable yet not quite the fastest payer
around. Equipment suppliers benefit from investing in long-term
agreement generation as UN agencies can piggyback on vendors
LT-agreements with other UN agencies. SEPTEMBER 2013 16 NIRAS UN

18. PAGE 1 CHALLENGES IN DOING UN BUSINESS Logistical
challenges / opportunities: UN Agencies have centralized their
procurement Copenhagen Budapest Dubai etc. In many countries UNDP
coordinates procurement efforts for other agencies in the country.
Decentralized regional procurement would have its advantages for UN
disaster relief operations but potential disadvantages for Finnish
vendors. SEPTEMBER 2013 18 NIRAS UN & WB Business Presentation

NIRAS UN & WB Business Presentation / M. Vehkavaara
23. PAGE 1 DOING BUSINESS WITH WORLD BANK What is the World
Bank? The World Bank (WB) is not a bank in the ordinary sense. Its
mission is to reduce poverty and support development providing
low-interest loans and grants to developing countries Source of
policy advice, research and analysis as well as financial and
technical assistance to developing countries around the world just
like NIRAS Established in 1944, the World Bank Group is
headquartered in Washington, D.C. WB has more than 10,000 employees
in more than 120 offices worldwide bigger than NIRAS 23 NIRAS UN
& WB Business Presentation / M. Vehkavaara
24. PAGE 1 CHALLENGES IN DOING WB BUSINESS SEPTEMBER 2013 24
NIRAS UN & WB Business Presentation / M. Vehkavaara Why are
companies selective regarding WB tenders? For sensitive Finnish
businessmen, the procurement process may too often lead to quite
surprising disappointments Tender sizes are often rather small. On
the average, WB tendering needs to be sector- or segment-wise
strategically justified due to low average profitability scenarios
and sometimes fairly tedious administrative processes.
25. PAGE 1 OBSERVATIONS 25 NIRAS UN & WB Business
Presentation / M. Vehkavaara The UN & WB are (big)
organisations just like any other. The UN & WB are high quality
demanding clients and quality standards must be kept high as your
last job defines you. There are people behind the organizational
facades - always. Remember sales and marketing - establishing
personal working relationships is all important. Adhering to high
ethical standards is the only applicable way. Do as they say.
