AND YEARS OF AWARD
1. Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering(1st Class), University of Malaya, Malaysia (1999)
2. Master of Science (Research) In Automotive Engineering, University of Sheffield, UK
(2003)
The aim of the research was to investigate the type of wear inside the combustion chamber
particularly on the cylinder liner and piston rings. Lamb waves were used to measure the torn
or wear surface at different states of surface roughness. The signal of lamb waves were
excited and captured by using piezoelectric. The results showed that the lamb waves had a
capability to differentiate different wear types and potential to be used as an alternative
method to measure wear inside the engine components.
3. PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Internal Combustion Engines), University of
Birmingham, UK (2011)
The aim of the research was to investigate the combustion characteristics and exhaust
emissions through combustion strategies using 2.7L and 3.0L modern V6 diesel engines
fuelled with fossil diesel and TME-diesel blends. The initial work was based on the advanced
combustion strategy on a modern V6 diesel engine fuelled with fossil diesel and TME-diesel
blends in order to meet future emissions legislation. The principle relied on high fuel
injection pressure, variation of injection timings, and variation of pilot fuel quantities and
cooled EGR. This approach lead to a new advanced combustion strategy that offers low
emissions, high power output and low fuel consumption. This work was a collaboration of
University of Birmingham with other parties such as Jaguar Land Rover, Shell Global

BIRMINGHAM, UK.
Research Fellow (2011)
This research investigated the relationship between fuel properties of biodiesel blends
(currently on market and future market)and engine emissions on modern V6 common rail
direct injection diesel engine. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that consists of the alkyl
monoesters of fatty acids. It has been considered as an alternative diesel fuel for internal
combustion engines due to its efficiency, cleanliness and biodegradability. This research
is a collaboration between University of Birmingham, Jaguar Land Rover UK, Johnson
Matthey, Green Fuel UK, Shell Global Solution UK and TSB UK. The total amount of
grant is approximately GBP 2.2 million.
The research aimed to provide technical solutions that allowed the diesel engine to
operate with a diverse range of renewable fuels and it had two major objectives: 1) to
identify the changes required by the engine system (including after-treatment) to run on
blends containing up to 30% of a variety of both generations bio-diesel fuels; 2) to
develop novel 'Flex-diesel' technologies involving onboard pre- and after-treatment to
maintain optimized engine performance and emissions with increasing percentages of
fully sustainable bio-fuels and thermal management.
Results generated from this experimental work can support and aid the understanding of
combustion characteristics when engine is fueled with a variety of bio-diesel fuels which
may be found in future world markets.

The research was to investigate the effect of natural gas and gasoline fuel to the engine
performance and emissions on1.6 12V Magma engine. Better performance with improved
fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions were two different objectives which were
difficult to be achieved at the same time. Introducing more air into the air fuel mixture
was the possible method to improve the combustion process resulted in higher power
output. The research aims to investigate the combustion characteristics and emissions
when engine fuelled with two different fuels. These results provided technical solutions
to the engine manufacturer that will allow the gasoline engine to operate with a natural

gas as a renewable fuel. The results showed that natural gas has promising results in term
of emissions but slightly lower in engine power output.
