So tell me a little about yourself?

I started designing magazine layouts for Stage Magazine and SL Magazinea couple of years ago. But for the last 4 years I have been freelancing asa illustrator and graphic designer working on anything from corporateidentities to papercrafts and mural graphics.

What are some of the projects you have worked on that you areproud of?

I am most proud of the second corporate identity that I did for Humanoid. There where so many details and aspects to it. It was really fun todo. Other projects I enjoyed include: a pop up card for Egg Films, theillustrations for a Cell C Zola 7 animation and an artwork for the Nikegallery in Melville. But most of the jobs I do I enjoy.

If you could collaborate with someone who would you choose towork with?

Ha ha! If I could I would collaborate with Bob Dylan (dream on ha ha).My dream would be to illustrate a childrens story written and narrated byBob Dylan.

Tell me about your latest project?

It is a childrens picture book. A love story between a snake and a skull.

    Why a childrens book?

I think it is every illustrators dream to do a childrens book. Thats what I

have always wanted to do. And its the best life: creating the illustrations ,collecting references, planning the pages, spending weeks and weeksdrawing a single page and really getting into it, focusing on one thing andletting it take over a big part of your life. My aim is to create something thatwill become a part of someones life, to bring enjoyment and fascination.

What is your favourite childrens book and why?

My favourite childrens book is called Trouble for Trumpets, written byPeter Dallas-Smith and illustrated by Peter Cross. This is the HOLY GRAILof illustrated childrens books. I grew up with the Afrikaans translationTrompette en Grompette. I must have looked at those pictures tenthousand times in my life. Every time I look at them I love them more. Thecrazy thing is after about 25 years of worshipping this book, I have neverread the actual story!

Any future projects in the pipeline?

Im moving to Amsterdam next year, so we will have to see what thatbrings But I already have another story in mind for a new childrens book.

Thank you for sharing your work with us Joh Del!

In celebration of 50 years of architectural practice,Bentel Associates International (BAI) commissionedNicework to create a book that would document theirextensive history and portfolio.

The project was over a year in the making. The BAI archives were comprehensively

researched, key players were interviewed and photographer Philip Mostert

photographed a vast majority of BAIs buildings. Signicant South African

businessmen Richard Maponya and Raymond Ackerman, who are long-standing

clients of BAI, were also interviewed.

In order to reect the streamlined branding of BAI, the hard cover book and its

slipcover feature two pantones and a sophisticated UV spot varnish. Th e landscape

orientation of the book combined with the full colour 200gsm satin paper are

perfect for large image-centric double page spreads. An additional disk insert at

the back of the book, includes an animation of current BAI projects.

The book is an analysis of BAIs legacy, the challenges of its development and the

evolution of the practice into one of South Africas major architectural rms. It is

also a project we are very proud of.

The Geometry of Pasta is unlike anycookery book you have encounteredbefore. It does not feature the extreme

close-up food photography we are sofamiliar with, nor is it structured in atypical thematic fashion.

Designed entirely in striking blackand white, the book is a minimalistmasterpiece that uses pasta shapesto create its own visual language.Organised alphabetically by pastashape, the book provides anencyclopaedic overview of how to cookand eat pasta like an Italian.

    Acclaimed chef Jacob Kenedy of

restaurantBocca di Lupo and awardwinning designer Caz Hildebrandof Here Design have created a bookthat explores the science, history andphilosophy behind delicious Italianpasta dishes with masterful effect.

The perfect shape +the perfect sauce

Each issue we pick the brain of a talented creative to list ten things thatthey like, enjoy, appreciate and/or get inspired by.

This issue we asked Damian Armstrong, creative director at whatwewant, to give us his list of ten things. whatwewant is aplace that works with brands to be more adventurous and entertaining. They design skate parks or create mockumentaries

especially for their clients. Here is a little more about the man himself:

I collect loads of music and sometimes a kind soul will ask me to DJ at festivals like Oppikoppi and Rocking the Daisies. I

love boxing and in a few months time Im marrying the gal of my dreams.

We hope you enjoy his list (in no particular order).

    Dubsteps Next Step

The gut-wrenching voice of Dubstep gets re-translated by artists like Gonjasufi, James Blake,George Fitzgerald, Kode9, Mount Kimbie, FlyingLotus, Burial, Pariah, Nosaj Thing, Deadboy, JoyOrbison, Ramadanman, Scuba, Untold and Xxxy.Nothing sounds alike...its more of a mood than agenre...and its given us the track of the year: Jamie

    Woons heart-stopping Night Air.

    Lionel Messi

Love that no matter how hard that prick Ronaldotries he is always a few paces behind footballsgreatest. Messis knack almost makes up forLiverpools hard knocks.

    Mushroom Pithivier from The Attic

First bite: devour it, its too good. Then: slow down, its almost finished. Next day: taste buds recall theflavour. Silly, dreamy smile.

    Paul Smith Jeans

Seriously comfy, seriously good fit, seriously great

fabric and seriously worn to death.

    RSS Mailboxes

Every half hour loads of really inspiring peoplefrom all over the world send me their ideas, rants, designs, playlists and dreams for the future. Neat.

    Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque

Another work of art from the nose that knows best.

    The American Ofce

Every season it gets funnier, darker, more

ridiculous and less PC...and its shut the British

    purists up.

    Tuxedo Shirts

Its a bit of an obsession. I collect everything fromvintage satin Dior and w ingtips to fake-c uffedknock-offs and classic whites. Shirt-wearing asritual.

    Typographic Tattoos

Ring finger done. Arm next. Word on.

    Wolf + Lamb Family

Gathered around Zev (the wolf) and Gadi (thelamb) are a group whose music is everything thatsawesome about house: dripping-wet soul, warpedhumour, serious production, sharp references,

    haunted moods and...most importantly...hip-shaking hypnotics.
