Newsletter No 9 26th June, 2020
From the Principal’s Desk
We have had a great term, while it’s been very busy and still at a distance for parents we have tried hard to keep you informed. We have had lots of positive feedback and publicity around our podcasts, TV episodes and recent shortlisting as finalists in the Australian Education Awards. It’ so amazing to see our students thrive when given the chance to work on high-level projects and real world scenarios.
Next week on Thursday, reports will go home. Due to Covid -19 our programs and continuity of learning have been interrupted for some of our students. Our teachers have balanced a variety of assessments and carefully weighed evidence of learning against the Australian Curriculum to generate a reliable and valid grade. If some of your child’s grades have dropped a band, we are optimistic that by the end of the year those discrepancies will improve. Over the last couple of weeks we have noticed a positive trend towards improvement of learning as we have settled back to a more normal routine. If you are worried about your child’s progress please contact your child’s teacher. Please remember that report grades do not always show all of the learning and progress made by your
child, each learner is unique. Celebrate their efforts and resilience over what has been a stressful time. Next term the Covid 19 restrictions will further relax. Parents are allowed back into the yard but will still need to maintain a 1.5m distance. The buildings will still be off limits except via appointment. Because our front office is so small we can only allow 2 adults in at a time so if you can communicate via email, please do. If you need to come into the office then please check the space before entering and wait outside if full. Please see the road map at the end of this newsletter to see what is current and what is changing.
Uniform purchase times are increasing. They can now be collected and purchased between 8.30am to 1.00pm, Tuesday to Friday. This enables the school to provide support at the front office while someone is busy helping with uniform sales. If you need a new uniform please drop in during those times to help streamline our service. Marg Clark

Learning in Rooms 5, 6 & 7 Design Thinking We are now beginning the Ideation phase of our Design Thinking topic of Sustainability. Students learnt in the ‘Immersion phase’ what sustainability is and we worked together to brainstorm ways we are sustainable at school and at home. Students were shocked at the amount of waste that ends up in land fill each year. They then worked in teams to brainstorm ideas of how we might be more sustainable at PNPS. Students are now beginning to be creative and design a “wow” idea to help us be more sustainable at PNPS.
Inquiry Most of us have completed our Personal Inquiry plans and leading questions and have begun our research with a view that it will be teacher/peer/self-assessed against a rubric before embarking on our action.
Writing Room 5, 6 and 7 students have been using a checklist to improve their persuasive argument writing. We have seen an improvement in the use of technical and high interest words, rhetorical questions and high modality words.
Congratulations to the Winners of our Term 2 Writing Competition A big thankyou to everyone who entered our writing competition. It was great to see so many entries! We are very pleased to announce the winners of the competition. Reception – year 1 Maisley from Room 0 Awarded for creating an enjoyable adventure with a rich, engaging narrative setting and storyline. Years 2-4 Buddhima from Room 5 Awarded for engaging the audience from the beginning with well-developed characters and ideas, and maintaining a consistent narrative structure and spelling conventions. Years 5-7 Ronny from Room 12 Awarded for using stylistic devices to create imagery, suspense and mood to capture, engage and sustain the reader’s attention from the beginning. We will be presenting our winners with their prizes next term. Look out for some photos in the newsletter! We also thank everyone who entered, who will receive a certificate of participation.
Reconciliation Assembly Our students from Rooms 3 & 4 hosted a special assembly during week 8 to recognize Reconciliation Week. As whole school assemblies are currently on hold, this was recorded and will be available to view at a later date on our YouTube channel. Leading up to Reconciliation Day, the students studied Aboriginal culture and Australian history, which included learning about the stolen generation. They have been learning greetings in Kuarna, the local Aboriginal language, as well as creating art work. The students also learnt a song by Aunty Wendy, called ‘Ridge-i-Didge’ which they enjoyed performing.
Seasons for Growth Program Learning to live with change and loss Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Prospect North we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence next term. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need the practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. If you would like to secure a spot for your child or require further information please contact Christine Fowler, Wellbeing Leader.
On Monday week 9, we had Watto Purruna Aboriginal SA Health team member and former West Coast Eagles and Port Adelaide Football Club superstar Shane Bond pay us a visit. He gave the students some great insight into self-belief and building resilience! You can watch the podcast on our PNTV Face book page. #inthistogether #portpower
What’s Been Measured in Studio 9 ?
This term Studio 9 has been very busy indeed. In maths we have
studied linear measurement, area and volume. Our Moodle lead us
into watching some interesting videos . One of these was about how to make a
HODOMETER, which is the older name for a trundle wheel.
This has been quite an interesting exercise as firstly the radius had to be 15.8 cm.
Students were then challenged to use this measurement to draw circle. Phil came up
to help cut out the heavy cardboard which we attached to metre rulers. We added the
final clicker arrows and are now ready to use our hodometers! Will they measure out
exactly 1 metre when they achieve one full rotation ? When you hear shouts of
Eureka you know!
For now here are some pictures of our work in progress.
Actually the hodometer was
invented by the very clever
ancient Greeks ( possibly
Archimedes). He’s the guy in
the bath who famously said “
Eureka !” which translates a bit
to “ The answer hit me!” A cry of
joy and satisfaction.
