First Lego League On Saturday November 2nd, both of our school’s First Lego League robotics teams headed for an early start to compete in the SA Regional Championship at Pedare College in Golden Grove. There was a field of over 30 teams competing for awards in the various categories of Robot Game, Robot Judging, Research Project and Core Values. Our two teams, Interfusion and Synergetix are a blend of rookies and more experienced students but all were keen to continue the school’s tradition of success in this competition that has over 38,000 teams worldwide.

Both teams had to present an innovative Research Project where they presented a solution to a problem based on the year’s theme of City Shaper. Interfusion presented a concept of rooftop gardens for high rise buildings, while Synergetix solved the woes of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital car park with a technology-based parking system controlled by a smartphone app. They also had to meet with judges to explain their robot design, mission strategies and show off some of their coding. After the final Robot Games were wrapped up, the judges needed some time to finalise awards and decide who would be offered one of the eight spots for the National Championship in Melbourne later this month. Both teams experienced success with Interfusion winning the Programming Award in the Robot Design category and Synergetix winning the Team Work Award in the Core Values category. An amazing effort but more news was still to come! Both teams were invited to be among the eight teams to compete at the National Championship (South Division) in Melbourne on November 24th! Congratulations to our students, who were exemplary all day, showing that any child regardless of background, can shine if given the opportunity.

First Lego League Junior Expo 2019 On Friday November 8th, we held our third Junior Lego League Expo in our Gym. FLL Junior is a program where teams of students from Years 2-4 participate in a season based on a theme culminating in an Expo celebration. During the season the teams learn about the season’s themes, plan and build a Lego model that solves a human problem and record their learning on a ShowMe poster. Teams also design their own team name and wear a team designed t-shirt. At the Expo, the teams show off their designs to each other as well as family members and participate in fun activities before receiving a certificate.

This year, Prospect North had 8 teams participate in the Boomtown Build season. We were joined at the Expo by 9 other teams from other schools and community groups for an exciting showcase. Each team were reviewed by invited adult Reviewers to explain and answer questions about their model design.

The STEM Ministry and senior FLL team members helped run the activities for the Expo and all students had a great time participating and viewing each other’s posters and builds. Thanks to the parents who attended and supported our growing event.

Remembrance Day On Monday November 11th, a group of 24 year 6/7 students attended a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Enfield RSL. It was a moving service, with our students laying a wreath on behalf of the school.

Movember As November arrived, you may have noticed some of the male staff members faces have changed. Gone are the beards and stubble and new are the freshly shaven faces. Movember, a month where men all around the world try their best to take a stand against cancer by raising awareness and raising money for cancer research. You will find Mr. Cailes, Mr. Judson, Michael, Jack, Maurice, and Mr. Drake also known as, The Gentlemen of Prospect North, making a stand against cancer and trying to raise money in order to further research for a cure. The Gentleman of Prospect North have joined the Movember cause and have a team donation page at: https://moteam.co/the-gentlemen-of-prospect-north?mc=1 If you would like to make a donation, please feel free. You can also take notice of the progression of each one of the faces as they slowly grow mustache magic. Keep an eye out for some Movember themed activities later in the month!!

Scholastic Book Club A big thank-you to all parents who have purchased this year from the Scholastic Book Club. The final catalogue for the year has now been distributed and orders are due no later than November 22nd. If you are purchasing items that you prefer your child not to know about, let us know. We will then contact you when the order arrives, rather than giving it to your child.

Students in Rooms 3, 4 and 4A

were very excited to have baby

guinea pigs in the classroom!

Students used the design thinking

process to learn about guinea pigs.

The immersion stage gave them

the knowledge to design and make indoor and outdoor enclosure models. The final outcome of this

process was to have 2 guinea pigs for our classrooms. Later, an outdoor enclosure will be made using

ideas from the models that students made.

As part of the school’s 85th birthday celebrations Rooms 3, 4 and 4A

have been learning about the history of the Secret Garden.

To help learn about the history, we had a guest speaker, Jenny Smith,

who is a former Prospect North Primary School teacher. Together with

colleagues and former students, she designed and created the Secret

Garden. Jenny told us there used to be a Secret Garden in a different

location!

Students had many interesting questions that they wanted to ask

Jenny ....she did an excellent job in answering them! We learnt that

it was made in 2009. We looked at photos from that time and worked

out where it was taken and took another one in that same spot to

see the change. What a difference!
