I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have had this term.

I have lived in Alice Springs for the past 19 years after immigrating to Australia to live by the sea. During this time I

have had 2 daughters both of whom have been students at Centralian. Prior to joining Centralian I worked at Gillen

Primary School as the Assistant Principal for many years. So I have particularly enjoyed catching up with the old

Gillen students. It was lovely to see how much they had matured and finally grown taller than me.

During my first week I had the opportunity to supervise the Year 12 trial exams. It was a chance to connect with the

Year 12s and to see how focussed and determined they are with their studies. They certainly have worked hard and

I hope they will continue to do so in the next few weeks. Good luck in your exams and final tasks.

I am looking forward to meeting the students who will be joining the College next year from CMS who will be having

their transition visit in week 5.

Throughout the term I look forward to meeting many family members at the different events in particular at the ‘Big

Lunch in’ for all the Year 12 students and families. Information about this event and other events specifically for the

Year 12 students is being posted out to all Year 12 families. And finally getting to know all the students and staff

IMPACT

Year 10 Hayley Baliva, Stevie Oliver and Cassie Boyle

Over the recent holidays 20 Year 10 IMPACT students went on a journey to Sydney to take part in the Foundation for

Young Australians (FYA) program Worlds of Work. During the 6 days away, students also experienced and explored

the iconic sights of the city of Sydney and toured the Sydney Opera House and went on a harbour tour on the Tribal

Warrior and stayed at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence in Redfern.

The WOW program provided students with opportunities to step up, show courage, face their fears, consider their

way of thinking about the world and develop their skills. The 5 days of the program allowed the students time to

evolve and grow and progressively challenge themselves day by day.

The students all set challenges for themselves across the week and stepped up to them, after a week of exploring

the question around what success means to them they presented back a range of creative and thoughtful

presentations. You should be very proud – as we are!

Year 11 – Georgie Erlandson and Vikki Berger

Our Year 11 Students completed their Remote Volunteer Placement at Jabiru. In partnership with the Children's

Ground, students assisted in facilitating activities of the Children's Ground School Holiday Program with students

from the wider community. These included, sport, a disco and cultural activities.

Students participated in a walking tour with the Traditional Owners watching the sun set at Ubirr Rock and a Cross

Cultural Workshop on Identity with the Children's Ground as we presented back about their leadership experiences

to staff.

Students were given an insight into community life and the daily challenges of living in a remote area. Their display

of leadership is highly commended. Students displayed confidence in each task and activity they facilitated and

participated in.

From the School Counsellor

Staying connected with your student during the end of school year stress.

With the end of the school year approaching it can be tempting to fall into disconnecting ways of communicating

with your student as they complete their studies for the year during Term 4. A suggestion is to be caring instead

of criticising, listening rather than blaming, supporting instead of complaining and nagging and encouraging instead

of threatening. Preserving your relationship with your student is a priority.

If you would like some help or suggestions in

this area please contact me on

[email protected] or 89595537.

VET News

The last VET Intensives of the year are running in Weeks 4 and 5. Year 11 and 12 students enrolled in VET courses

have their last VET week from Monday 27 – Friday 31 October. Year 10 students (and a few other students)

participate from Monday 3 to Friday 7 November. Attendance throughout the week of all those enrolled will be

critical as VET Lecturers will have little opportunity to provide ‘catch up’ options, with resulting occurring soon after.

This is particularly the case for students enrolled in Certificate III courses as their results may contribute to successful

completion of Year 12.

A number of our students have recently been on Structured Work Placements with more to follow. Reports from

employers suggest that students have performed well and we congratulate them on their participation.

Students who completed Certificate I Business in the last VET Intensive week are currently completing their

Structured Work Placement application forms. Could parents and care givers please ask their child if this applies to

them and if so complete and sign the necessary portion of the forms? Once the forms are submitted the VETiS

Officer is able to pursue placements for these students. Students are asked to nominate preferred placements

though these cannot be guaranteed.

Students are currently selecting subjects / courses for 2015. You will be aware that the school is offering an

additional VET program next year where students may opt to follow a VET course that entails a full day of VET each

week at Year 10, and two full days of VET each week at Year 11. It is important that parents and students are fully

informed about this program so please be in touch with the College if you require further information.

Poetry workshops

Year 10 English students have been attending a series of poetry workshops run by performance poet Kelly Lee

Hickey. This is part of a number of activities run by teachers at Centralian Senior College and The Red Room

Company. This activity has encouraged students to not only write their own poetry but also use their analytical skills

to look at what poets past and present have done with the English language.

Clontarf

On Wednesday October 15 a select group of students from the Clontarf Academy took on the ‘Clontarf Old Stars’

Masters Games team made up of Central Region staff in a game of AFL 9’s at Sadadeen Oval. The game was played in

great spirits and was competitive throughout, and whilst the Old Stars were able to run up the score throughout the

match it was the CSC Eagles who eventually prevailed, scoring the golden goal to win after almost 90 minutes of

football.

Michaelis McMasters played with his usual speed and flair and was well supported for the Eagles by Kyle Monkerud,

Kevie Buzzacott and the high-flying Jonathon Hogan. Employment officer Simon ‘Bomber’ Coutts was a stand out for

the Old Stars with his physical play and Centralian Academy director Ian McAdam showed he still has that ‘it’ factor

on the field, even if the same can’t said for his knees.

Nestlé Mentoring Challenge – DARWIN 2014

In week 6 of Term 3, ten students from the Girls Academy headed to Darwin for the Nestlé Mentoring Challenge

hosted by the Palmerston Girls Academy (PGA). The girls and Academy staff flew to Darwin on the Sunday and came

back on the Thursday. The Centralian (Alice Springs), West Arnhem (Jabiru & Gunbalanya), Kununurra and

Palmerston Girls Academies all participated in the event. The first two days of the seminar were held at the show

grounds, with different workshops. The workshops were:

Workshop "Name" Business Topics

1 Looking Flash CDU Hair

2 Looking Fresh CDU Beauty

3 Sacred body Danila Dilba Statisctis on STI's, teen pregnancies and safe sex

4 Safer Sister Dept. Children and Families Face masks and reading signs of inappropriate behaviour

5 Stronger Sister Head Space Resilience- Depression

6 Cashed Up Somerville Budgeting

7 No Shame Job NT Fashion Week Runway and Confidence

8 Women in Sport Australian Rugby Union Presentation and Activities

9 Cultural Connection Pudakul Cultural- Basket Weaving

The girls who were a part of the trip were:

Aaliyah Fuamatu Hayley Baliva Renee Cusack Frances Kelly Kaya Jarrett Stevie-Louise Oliver Ella Fenton-Woods Tori Shields Allarica Palmer Sheena Baird

These workshops were very beneficial for the girls. On Tuesday afternoon, all of the Academies got together and

went to Lake Alexander for a swim. It was beautiful. Later that night, they had a disco. There were a lot of good

moves made on the dance floor from our girls, especially Sheena and Allarica. Wednesday was fun day. All the

Academies and staff went to a presentation about Women in Rugby. This was hosted by Dale Robertson who is the

Rugby 7’s Development Manager and Tallisha Harden who is the captain of Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development

Team. After the presentation, all of the girls participated in a Rugby Drills and Skills Clinic. This was really fun and

most of the girls learnt new things as they had never played Rugby before. When the Rugby Clinic had finished, we

travelled to Jingili and had a water activity day with water slides and sumo wrestling in blow up sumo suits. The

sumo wrestling was very funny!

After slipping and sliding at the water park, the Centralian girls went to do some shopping at Casuarina Shopping

Centre. When the girls had finished all their shopping, it was time to travel back to our accommodation and pack our

bags ready for the flight home the next day.

The next day, all the academies travelled to Palmerston Senior College, for a surprise. There was a special guest

speaker who was coming in to talk to all of the girls. It was Jessica Mauboy! The girls were so excited and happy to

see her. Jess spoke to the girls about school, life, singing and a lot of other things. She even sang some songs for us

all. When the girls had all gotten photos and signatures from Jess, we headed back. The girls really enjoyed

themselves and were very well behaved. They all got so much out of the trip and we look forward to another great

Mentoring Challenge next year.

GIRLS ACADEMY SYDNEY TRIP 2014:

Every year, there is a Year 12 Trip to Sydney for our Year 12 girls, to reward them for all their hard work. Three Year

11 students also attended, as they had worked hard this year also. There was a total of 6 Senior College girls, along

with Bev and Rhianon (Stumpy), combined with the Centralian Middle School Girls Academy. Samarra and Wendy

(AIEW at CSC) bought along 5 Year 9 girls as well. The girls had a great time, and didn’t even have a chance to have a

break with our busy schedule which was full off all different activities. Here’s how our schedule went:

Day 1: We all arrived in Sydney late in the afternoon and headed to the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence

(NCIE) in Redfern and unpacked our luggage, ready for a fun week.

Day 2: In the morning, we all headed to Alexandria for a photo shoot. This was organised by Nestle. The girls all got

their hair and make-up professionally done, and had a professional photo shoot. This ran over the whole day, and

the girls all looked absolutely stunning!

Day 3: The girls were awake nice and early, to do a Gym Session at NCIE. When the session was over, the girls and

staff all got ready to travel to the Royal Sydney Botanical Gardens. It was the perfect way to start the day, and so

nice to see all the beautiful gardens. When we had finished at the Botanical Gardens, we all walked down to Circular

Quay to have some lunch. When we had finished lunch, we headed to Sydney University. We all went on a tour of

the University. It is huge! We had a look at the Koori Centre of the University, the Graffiti Tunnel and one of the

colleges that are on campus. When the tour had finished, we travelled back to NCIE to get ready to go to Chinatown

for dinner.

Day 4: We all woke up early, ready for our next big day. We all travelled to Paddy’s Markets to do some shopping.

The markets were great. After the girls had done some shopping and had a look around at the markets, we travelled

to Luna Park. The girls had an amazing time and went on all of the rides. They even made the staff go on a couple!

When the girls had finished going on the rides, we travelled back to NCIE to for some dinner.

Day 5: The best day. On the last day we were in Sydney, we all visited the Taronga Zoo. The girls saw all different

animals, from Tigers to Seals, to Chimpanzees to Komodo Dragons. It was incredible to see all the animals. When we

had finished at the Zoo, we walked down to the Ferry, caught the ferry across to Circular Quay and got on the Tribal

Warrior Cruise. We met Terry, who was our host for the day. We sailed to Clarke Island, where we learnt about bush

tucker, and some history about what happened on that island. Once we left the island, we sailed through the

harbour, soaking up the sun and the fresh ocean breeze. When we arrived back at Circular Quay, jumped back on our

bus and headed straight to Westfield in East Gardens for some late night shopping.

Day 6: Back home to Alice. The girls and staff were all up early, doing the final packing and tidying their rooms,

getting ready to head back to Alice Springs.

Overall, the girls had an amazing time, and each and every one of them loved it, and were very happy to be a part of

the trip. All the girls said that it was a good way to end the year. We thank all of the people that we met and thank

them all for the time they gave us. We look forward to the Year 12 trip to Sydney again next year!
