Centralian Girls Academy recently celebrated International Women’s Day and the theme #EachforEqual this term where

Year 11 and 12 students headed out to a photoshoot at Simpsons Gap. Students were able to invite any women from their

families to join us and have a lovely family photo taken by Iona’s Photography and Art. After this we all went to Epilogue

rooftop where the emcees Janaya Kopp and Annie Coffey welcomed guest speakers Hannah Fyfe and Mischa Cartwright

who spoke to the students about their journey and what International Women’s Day and the theme meant to them.

Girls Academy would like to congratulate the students who have been

elected as year level leaders for 2020.

Girls Academy would also like to let families and students know that

during Covid 19 we remain operational and available to assist

students with their education and encourage them to reach out to us

via phone or email.

Looking forward to Term 2 and whatever it may bring.

Sam Hill & Sarah Carmody - Girls Academy

We were also joined by our yaye’s from Bradshaw. Six students from

Bradshaw primary school were selected to join the day as they have

been working closely with our Year 11 students in the Yaye Kake

program. This program has been a great way for Girls Academy

students to volunteer their time and make strong mentoring

relationships with the students from Bradshaw. We would like to thank

everyone for their support and celebrating such a great day with us.

Year 11s Take on Work Experience at Yeperenye

As our Year 11 fellas start to get to the pointy end of their time at school, it is important that

they begin thinking about employment and a potential career to pursue once they’ve

completed Year 12. Lawrence Squire, Jeremy McPherson and James McLaughlin were all given

the opportunity through our partners the Yeperenye Centre to try out some potential jobs,

through a day of work experience. Jeremy headed to Bright Eyes to work on some customer

service while Lawrence and James became sandwich artists for the day at Subway.

It was a great day and a huge learning opportunity for the fellas who

will now have their foot in the door at these businesses, should they

pursue part time or full time work in the future. We are lucky to have

partners like the Yeperenye Centre who are able to offer our guys

these experiences while still at school.

Objects as Art, the Recycled Arts Show Down

Year 10 and 11 Visual Art students together with Acacia Hill art group produced an amazing array of 47 artistic

sculptures for the Alice Springs Town Council Youth Action Group initiative Recycled Arts 2020 competition.

With imaginations running wild, students experimented with the concept of assemblage exploring either the open

theme category or climate change category.

This art challenge meant they had to use found objects and construct a three dimensional sculpture. In effect the act of

randomly grouping objects artistically means these emerging artists are repurposing the object from functional to

decorative.

We wait in anticipation as a virtual gallery will go online soon, so everyone can see the student’s fantastic creations.

Judging will take place soon so stay tuned.

All current “Polly Farmer Foundation - Follow the Dream” program students have been invited to join our Google

Classroom.

The PFF Program’s main feature is that students have access to additional tutor support to stay on top of academic work

levels and develop their special interests. Therefore students already in the program can continue to gain attendance

credits in four ways next term.

- Attend the Study Centre in person twice a week

- Access Emma or Grace online / phone between 3 – 5pm for study support twice a week

- Respond to tasks sent to you from Google Classroom

- Submit your weekly plan, as proof of your commitment, showing hours on your Follow the Dream task other than

school timetabled classes which happen between 8.25am and 2.55pm. i.e. you can get credit for music / art / sport /

dance / VET courses / lessons

Following the recent Term One progress reports, invitations will be delivered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

students, who have already shown potential to continue doing well academically. We invite you to attend after school and

see if the Polly Farmer aims meet with your study / work needs. Parental approval is then required to join the group.

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students may apply. Turn up, check out the Study Centre which is quite like a

homework club, and get parent approval to continue.

Of course – the Study Centre is open to all students Monday to Thursday between 3-5pm with an afternoon tea snack and

the bus ride home – with two supportive and patient tutors, Grace and Emma. Judith seems to take charge of her Art

students in this time too.

It is very hard to predict the year ahead as you will be aware – the best news is that the budget has been allocated as

usual… when disease allows we will get back to normal quickly.

Question: on what surfaces does the COVID 19 virus survive longest? Wood, Metal, Plastic, Cardboard and does the virus live

on all metal surfaces for the same time ?

This knowledge may encourage you to wash hands / use sanitizer more often and wash your clothing daily.

Stay safe – demonstrate leadership with physical distancing and being aware of what you touch on which the deadly virus

might survive for some time. Explain to younger siblings!

Over Term 1, we at Outcomes have had a fantastic start to the 2020 school year. Students quickly got back into their

learning, with students enrolling in Stage 2, Stage 1 and Year 10 English, Mathematics, Health, Workplace Practices,

History, Food and Hospitality and Creative Arts courses to name a few.

As well as the academic subjects this term we have had

students enrolled in Certificate 1 in Hospitality.

This new VET course provides the students with the

opportunity to learn how to make Barista coffee, cook deli-

cious meals and learn about health and hygiene in a kitchen.

The students work with Scott out of the Food and Hospitality

room at CMS. We also have students enrolled in Certificate II

in Rural Operations, Certificate III in Music and Certificate II in

Aircraft Maintenance.

Another exciting introduction has been our Monday

program, where students have visited a variety of work

places, and learnt about the differing cultures that live in

Alice Springs and been part of a Cross Cultural Awareness

session run by Flinders University at the Centre for Remote

Health. Robbie Charles talked to the students about the

languages in Central Australia, how Aboriginal languages have

changed since colonization, and how some languages relate to

each other.

Robbie also talked about the kinship system and how different languages have different skin names. He then led the

students through a tree exercise on what’s important in culture (the roots), what relationships are important (the

branches, what they believe is important to them in regards to culture (the leaves) and how bad things can affect their

tree (the bugs). Many thanks to Sharna for organizing of these cultural learning events.

As we have a number of students enrolled in Stage 1 PE and Stage 2 Sport, we have been visiting Centralian Senior

College’s gym every Wednesday for a practical skills lessons this term, with a focus on basketball skills. We were

able to showcase our skills to the NTSDE teachers who visited to work with students and teachers around these

courses. We have a strong partnership with the NTSDE which enhances the learning of students, in particular those

in Year 12.

We also have a strong focus on wellbeing and are visited each Thursday by Taegan, the College’s Student Counsellor.

We have also developed a strong relationship with Inkintja - the men’s shed based at Congress. Here the fellas go

with Mickey and Dylan once a week to have a yarn and participate in their programs. Ash and Ron continue to

support our students through their music and cooking programs. All of these enhance the wellbeing of our

students and provide the students with strong healthy role models. In Term 2 we will begin our work with Alukura

in their program designed to help young people gain the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes to grow as strong,

aware and confident people who can make healthy choices about their relationships and sexuality.

This term we have farewelled staff members Deborah Mason and Suzhannah Bostock-Stuart who have been

appointed to other positions in Alice Springs. We wish them well. The Outcomes team would like to wish everyone

a safe break and look forward to Term 2. Lyndsay Thomas - Alice Outcomes Senior Teacher
