Important Dates
Dear Parents & Carers, On Friday 26 October 2018, we celebrated World Teachers Day. World Teachers Day is a great opportunity to acknowledge our amazing Bakewell teachers.
The dedication and commitment that is required to be a quality teacher is far beyond what is required in a job. Teaching is a vocation, a passion and a calling. I want to thank the teachers at Bakewell Primary School, and all teachers, for their commitment, enthusiasm and diligence.
We are extremely fortunate at Bakewell to have a group of teachers who are inspiring, passionate and who are committed to getting the very best out of all our students so they have the best opportunities in life.
As part of World Teachers Day celebrations, I had the privilege of attending the 2018 Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards at Parliament House. I was also extremely honoured to be a finalist in the Northern Territory Principal of the Year Awards, and was fortunate to win Principal of the Year for the Palmerston and Rural Region.
Whilst I am extremely grateful and appreciative of this award, I am very conscious that the transformational school improvement journey that we have been on at Bakewell has required a consolidated team
effort. It acknowledges our amazing staff – teachers, learning support and administration, our wonderful students and of course the fantastic support and engagement that we have from our parents and from our community members. So while I’m honoured and appreciative of receiving the award, for me it is a reflection of ‘Team Bakewell’ and inclusive of all stakeholders as previously mentioned.
As always, our work here at Bakewell is never complete as school improvement in an everchanging context and world is continuous.
It is good however to pause and even stop sometimes to reflect on our shared success and collective impact. It also allows us the opportunity to reenergize, refocus and renew our commitment to delivering Excellence in Education.
In order to continue to build our skills and develop our team all staff will be participating in a Professional Learning day on Friday 23 November 2018. More information is available on page 4 of the Bulletin.
Wishing our Bakewell Community a GREAT week.

Dear Bakewell Students, Family and Community,
Recently I was provided with some new information from Psychology Today on the effects of kindness; so I wanted to share these.
The science of positive psychology has increased our understanding on the impact acts of kindness for the person who performs them.
Choosing to do things for the benefit of others, activates pleasure centres in the brain. The release of dopamine (a neurotransmitter released in response to other pleasurable activities including eating or receiving money) is also released when being kind to people.
According to Psychology Today (2018) when we practice random acts of kindness it releases an energy. We feel better and the recipients of our acts feel better, which then makes them more likely to be kind to other people. It can also reduce pain as Dopamine, Serotonin and Endogenous Opioids are released by kind behaviour. When two or more people are engaged in kindness behaviour, it enhances the release of oxytocin. In turn, bonds between those who are kind to one another are strengthen.
So, why not try saying something positive to everyone you meet today, leave a happy note for someone else to find, count how many people you smile at today or call a relative or friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while.
“Share your smile with the world. It’s a symbol of
friendship and peace” (Christine Brinkley).

Wet weather procedures have been sent home this week. Please remember that the school will not automatically dismiss students at 2:30pm if there is an electrical storm or it is raining too heavily.
Students will remain in classes under teacher supervision until we consider the weather okay for them to make their way home safely. Parents wishing to collect their children from the classroom may do so. Older siblings should not be sent to collect younger siblings.
Please have a plan and make sure your child/ren know the plan.

Mastering Math at Bakewell
Welcome back to Mastering Math at Bakewell. Research shows that automaticity of number facts is integral to student success when engaging with number problems that require high-order thinking. Practise the game below anytime, anywhere to help your child master their math facts!
Ad d 6 To begin this game, one player will need to pick a number. It is recommended that the number be between 1-9). The next person adds 6 to that number and says the sum out loud. Be sure to use the word sum–math vocabulary is essential!
The next person has to add 6 and say the sum out loud.
Continue, until you reach a designated number (we like 100).
Skip counting is a precursor to multiplication, and this game makes it enjoyable.
You can easily change it up. Next round, add 3. Or start with a big number and subtract 4.
