It has been a busy time in Term 2 with contact times, Wednesday morning trainings, health checks, Friday morning breakfasts, the boxing

anger management course (which the fellas named Brother Boys Boxing Team), after school footy games, camps and our national

Clontarf Foundation PD in Sydney. There were three big key events for us this term, the ANZAC Day march in Week 1, the Territory Cup in

Week 5 and the Billy Kart Derby in Week 7.

ANZAC Day March

It was a great honour to be a part of the ANZAC Day march again this year and it was a proud moment seeing our fellas marching together

with Centralian Senior College staff and Girls Academy members holding the College banner. It is important for us to continue to reflect on

the sacrifices and input provided by our service men and women and to pay our respects to them.

Territory Cup

The Territory Cup is a big event for Clontarf each year, with academies coming together from all across the Northern Territory for a day of

football action. This year we hosted the event in Alice Springs with teams from Casuarina, Palmerston, Gove, Gunbalanya and Tennant

Creek to name a few. Our fellas went through the tournament undefeated to set up a grand final show down against cross town rivals

Yirara College. After trailing by one goal at half time, the fellas came out firing to snatch the lead and win the game by five points in a

thrilling nail biter, a fitting game to end a hugely successful Territory Cup for Clontarf. The team was lead by our Captain Eddie Campbell

and Vice-Captain Caleb Gerrard. Individual awards were given to the following players:

Clontarf Spirit Award: Caleb Gerrard

MVP: Tarrant Maher

Territory Cup All Star Team: Reggie Gallagher, Jai Harvey, Dominic Forbes

Billy Kart Derby

In the lead up to the Finke Desert Race, we again went out to Yirara College for the annual Billy Kart Derby where academies from the

Central Region (Centralian SC, CMS, Yirara and Tennant Creek) all came together to put their billy karts to the test against each other.

This year Bunnings came on board to support the event by donating all of the material needed to build our billy karts using a standard DIY

billy kart template. The Year 11 Integrated Learning Class visited Bunnings every Friday morning to build our billy karts in the DIY Work-

shop space. We built two billy karts named Pudabay (Arrernte word for hurry up, although we changed the spelling for the purpose of nam-

ing the billy kart) and Motorv8. Although we didn’t win too many races at the event, our fellas really enjoyed the process of building the billy

karts with the help of staff from Bunnings. We have now built up a strong relationship with Bunnings and the staff there who are keen to

support Clontarf with future community activities. Bunnings have also expressed an interest in employing suitable students from our acade-

my. We thank Bunnings for their ongoing valued support!

Farewell

Unfortunately we had to say farewell to the Norman brothers, Lance and Barrie, this term as they

make the move down to Adelaide with their family. We will miss them around our academy room, as

they are regulars at Clontarf and were great contributors in lending a helping hand with any of our

activities . It was good to see the staff and many of their peers come down to our academy room for

thefarewell lunch. We wish Lance and Barrie all the very best.

END OF TERM IS HERE!

Its been a busy Term 2 for Girls Academy with many classes and events. We would especially like to highlight and congratulate the Year 10 and 11 students who volunteered to assist with Centralian Middle School’s Athletics Carnival. The day was a great success, thanks to the students who lead by example and completed their jobs to a terrific standard. The teachers at CMS were very impressed and loved seeing our student’s smiling faces again. A big thank you to Rekeah Nardoo, Tamzin Little, Emily McGinness, Shania Cole-Presley, Shania Armstrong, Janaya Kopp, Tallulah Ford and Kaymani Shelford.

To end the semester we celebrated the students who were ‘Shining Bright’ with over 80% attendance, as well as engagement and participation in Girls Academy activities and their schooling. We had a total of 18 students achieving Shining Bright who were rewarded with a lunch at ‘Sporties’ restaurant as well as a trip to the cinema. It was a great, fun and relaxing day for the girls and we would love to

see even more of our students achieving Shining Bright. Looking forward to seeing you all back for a great Term 3 with Girls Academy.

What things made up your popular culture when you were a teenager ? What music did you listen to ? What were the latest fashions ?

What celebrities did you idolise ?

For the past three weeks, students in Year 10 History have been examining Australian popular culture and how and why it has changed over the decades. To help start their studies on this new topic, Year 10 History students took part in an in-school popular culture ‘museum’

exhibit.

The display featured clothing from the 50’s to the 70’s, old vinyl records, walkmans, landline phone sets and a polaroid camera. The display provided students with an interactive means of exploring how fashion, technology and entertainment in Australia have changed

over the years. Students enjoyed posing for a polaroid photo in a 1970’s get-up and playing with some old rotary dial phones.

This display couldn’t have happened without the generous donations from our school staff, and we hope to run the display again for Year

10 students commencing History in the second semester.

During Week 8 and 9 of this term, students studying Japanese at Centralian Senior College and Centralian Middle School had the

opportunity to participate in an overseas educational study tour to Japan. The group of 11 students travelled to Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima

and Kyoto. Students were encouraged to put their language skills to the test for everyday activities such as purchasing subway tickets,

ordering meals and navigating the cities of Japan. It was great to see the students actively using their Japanese language skills.

The highlight of the study tour were the visits made to three schools, Kaetsu High School, Tsukinoki High School and Osaka Mino Jiyu

Gakuen. At all schools, students were given the chance to socialise with their Japanese peers whilst enjoying activities such a traditional

tea ceremony, singing, brass band performance, cheerleading and attending English classes; where the students practiced their Japanese

and helped Japanese students with their English.

Whilst visiting Osaka Mino Jiyu Gakuen, students experienced home stays with Japanese families. For most students this was the

highlight of the trip. Friendships were formed and Japanese families were overwhelmed that Australian students wanted to get to know

them and learn their language.

Spending time at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Museum was an eye opener for our students. The experience was powerful and

extremely moving.

Students also spent time at many shrines, temples and Zen gardens, allowing students time to meditate and reflect on their experiences

while overseas whilst also learning about

different religions and spiritual practices.

Overall the trip was a huge success and

enormously valuable for language students to

practice their language skills and to immerse

themselves into the culture of Japan.

Daniel Ford - Year 11 Student

When we went into the Waste Depot Facility we came across this sign which tells us where to go for disposal of materials.

When we arrived at the Town Council Waste Depot we saw a sculpture of a Recycling Machine with a flock of sheep made out of recycled materials. The students who went were Nigel PeiPei, Luka Yeaman and myself including the teacher of the class Marg McHugh.

When we went through the Weigh Bridge they have a sign that tells you the fees for different vehicles. Every vehicle going to the facility is weighed and charged accordingly. Our school bus weighed 2.5 tonnes

We had a visit from the Environment Officer Hayley Michener, who took time out of her busy day to come and see how we do our Re-cycling and to give us tips on how to get better at it.

Nigel, Luka and myself got a reward for organising and cleaning the recycling area in the Gateways Shade Area.

The Northern Territory Literary Award is a prestigious, annual competition for Northern Territory writers. One section, the Kath Manzie

Youth Award, celebrates the best of poetry and prose written by young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years. This year judges

have short listed four writers in the NT, and three of those finalists are Centralian College students!

Ellaby Kenneth in Year 10 submitted a creative spoken word piece titled Vanilla. Ezra Angeles and Janaya Kopp, also both Year 10

students at Centralian SC, submitted work they created as part of their first assignment in Mrs. Glenda McCarthy’s English class. Ezra’s

poem honours his “culture and ancestors that walked the red dirt of his home Ayampe. He also shares his love of football and the good

vibes of having family close. Janaya submitted an autobiographical piece titled I Belong in which she writes about returning to the beauti-

ful landscape and rugged MacDonnell ranges after living in Melbourne for a year. Janaya shares the joy she takes in a long bloodline of

family traditions and culture… the Corkwood tree and the fierce emu, my Dreaming.

The Northern Territory Literary Awards Ceremony event will take place on Tuesday 24 July at Araluen Arts Centre at 5:30 pm. The event

is free but bookings must be made through Eventbrite at https://ntliteraryawards.eventbrite.com.au. We hope that family and friends of the

finalists are able to attend the ceremony, as well as College students and staff. See advertisement on next page.

Judges commented on the high standard of work submitted for the Kath Manzie Award this year, so our congratulations go to Ellaby, Ezra

and Janaya. We are proud of all Centralian Senior College students for their great writing, speaking and thinking. Keep sharing your

stories and perspectives; we need to hear your voices!
