De La Salle University Library Online Pathfinder: an Analysis of Site Usage Logs by Yolanda F. Odsinada Initsliteralsense, apathfindermeans a "map for locating information destinations with street signs and helpful hints along the way." However, a path-finder for librarypurposehas takenona differentmeaning.Originating in theearlypartofthe1970s,thepathfinderasa "reference tool,"asfirstconceivedbyMarieCanfield, whowasa staffmem-ber of the Model Library Project ofProject Intrex, Massachusetts Instituteof Technology, refers to the "step-by-step instructional tool" for "infrequent users or users new to a subject area" (Canfield,p287).Inanotherarticle, thelibrarypathfinderisregardedasa"kind of map to the resources of the library," which facilitates the work of a libraryuser"whose search for recorded materi-als on a subject of interest is just begin-ning" (Dahl,p.227).Forhispart,Buen-rostro(1986,p.47),anotedpractitionerof library science in the Philippines, defined it as an"introductory checklist
of references to those basic sources rep-resenting the variety of forms in which information on a specific topic can be located." Kuntz (2003) made it clearthat it "does not do the work for the stu-dents,"addingthat it ismerelya"path guiding students as they navigate the complex world of the information age" andisa"starting point, a launching pad for students." Scope and limitation of the Study The study limited itself to theassessment of usability and effective-ness of online pathfinders in PDF andWEB-basedformatmountedontheDeLa Salle University Library websitefromthetimetheprojectwasinitiatedinNovember2003uptoJanuary2009.
Significance of the Study The result of the study mayshedlightonwhichtopicsarefrequentlysoughtafterbytheDLSUusersandmay

Applying the “80/20 ParetoRule,”theresultshopedtogiveinsightsonwhetherornotthepathfinderservicehas been effective as far as the attain-mentofitsobjectivesisconcernedandwouldlikewiseserveasaspringboardtowards the improvement of the ser-vice.
Methodology The study employed the de-scriptive quantitative approach utiliz-ingwebmetrictechniquesindetermin-ing the usability and/or success of themounted pathfinders on the Library’sweb page. Web metric is defined as“standardized ways of measuring some-thing as it relates to the Web” (JukkaHeinon,MarcusHagert2004,p.1).Suc-cessofawebsiteorawebpage,onthe

Summary of Findings The salient findings of thestudyareasfollows:1. The steady increase in usage/access/viewsof thepathfinder’swebpage by remote users through theyearsproved that theeffortand timespent by the staff in creating, devel-opingandupdatingthepathfindersismeaningful andworthwhile (refer toTable1onpage3).2. The pathfinders are regardedby library users as an indispensableresearch tool as proven by the num-ber of times it has been accessed orviewedbyremoteuserssummingupto125,743timesover the60-monthperiod(November2003toDecember2009)equivalentto69.86viewsperday(seeTable1onpage3).
