President’s Message
Jack M. Woodside Club President
MHCC Bartender Mike Kelly, welcomed a baby girl, Mira on June 17. She is Mike’s first child.
Mira Kelly
Among other reasons, we join a country club because we’re looking for a place to relax and have fun. Let’s not forget, though, to share some common courtesies as well. While we try not to have an overabundance of rules that get in the way of our enjoyment, some rules must be strictly enforced to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all.
I’m concerned, in particular with a couple of issues: First, some parents are allowing their children to run freely throughout the club without supervision. Unsupervised children have run willy-nilly up and down the hallways, elevators and throughout common areas of the club while their parents have been elsewhere. Also, children have run across the surface of the putting green, damaging it, and have come dangerously close to the pond on hole number 9. This pond is deep and anyone who slips in might be out of reach before an adult could respond. Children are to be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please be supportive of club management and staff when they enforce this rule.
Secondly, please review the rules on proper attire. Keep in mind that the halfway house is open to all, but golfing attire is required.
Thank you for helping us all to have a safe and happy experience at Meridian Hills.
Ryan and Sara Snow welcomed their daughter Silvia Arlene on June 22nd. Silvia is the first girl born into the Snow family in over 150 years and she was born on Ryan’s moms birthday!
Silvia Snow
Susan and David Crook welcomed a baby boy, Alexander David Crook on June 1st. He is their third child.
Alexander Crook
Amanda Simmons, from the Accounting Department, and her husband Jack welcomed a daughter, Olivia Jo, on June 28th. She is their first child.

Summer has gotten off to a terrific start here at Meridian Hills. The Junior programs this year have had excellent participation, and our younger members appear to be having a great time. Be sure to check your Newsette calendar on the MHCC website (www.meridianhillscc.org) to see what is going on at the club. There are numerous events scheduled throughout the summer for everyone to enjoy.
Final plans are underway for our annual MHCC Fireworks Party on Friday, July 2nd. Again this year, we will have a designated area set up on the southwest end of the clubhouse that will be geared specifically for children ages 2-6 with pony rides, games and inflatables. We look forward to Zambelli providing another spectacular fireworks display. By the time you receive this issue of the Newsette you will only have a couple of days left to reserve your table. Don’t miss the best event of the season!
Attention All Fireworks Party Attendees! All those attending the Fireworks Party are required to have a wristband to enter the property. This year when you enter the parking lot or exit the shuttle from St. Luke Catholic Church, you will need to check in at registration at the main entrance to pick up your wristbands. You and each of your guests must have a wristband on to eat, participate in activities, utilize bar service and to view the fireworks display. All staff, security personnel and game attendants will be enforcing the wristband policy again this year. Thank you for your cooperation in our efforts to be fair to everyone.
It’s amazing how quickly the summer season passes by. Soon school will be back in session and fall activities will begin. Then, before we know it, the holiday season will be upon us. Although it may seem early, now is the time to book your family or company holiday event here at the club. Several prime dates are still available for your choosing. Please call the catering office for availability.
I would like to welcome those new members who have just joined us recently, and hope that you are enjoying the facilities here at Meridian Hills. If you have not yet had an opportunity to schedule your new member orientation, contact our Membership Director, Lisa Strachota, or myself to schedule your tour. This is a very informative opportunity to take a detailed tour and learn about all that we do here at Meridian Hills.
As the Summer continues, please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experience here at the Club more enjoyable.
Enjoy the rest of the Summer!Kevin

Life at the club is vibrant! Every time you drive into the club, you see friends hitting balls with a Pro on the tennis courts, kids with their bathing suits walking to the pool, Jack Barber and his staff giving lessons, and members in business attire on their way to the dining room or on their way to a special event. Membership in the Club is doing well. New members and members who are celebrating monumental club anniversaries are taking advantage of our club.
I often see members who are entertaining guests and wonder if their guests have an interest in learning more about membership. The next time you bring a guest to the club who might have an interest in membership, please consider calling Lisa Strachota, the Director of Membership. She always greets people with a smile and makes people feel at ease when she talks to them about membership. You can be assured she will provide your friends with information about the club and how it might pertain to their interest in a casual and non-aggressive manner. Lisa has been a membership professional for over ten years. Six of those years have been spent developing relationships with members of Meridian Hills and assisting over 275 members through the membership process.
Don’t forget that the Membership Committee and Board of Directors allow you the opportunity to entertain qualified prospective golf members for a round of golf. If you are a Golfing member and know someone who is sincerely interested in Golfing membership, call Lisa Strachota to arrange a complimentary round of golf. Please be prepared to provide your guests’ contact information so we can ensure the guest receives the appropriate membership information.

This is the biggest event on our calendar for the entire year! For those of you new to Meridian Hills Country Club, you are in for a real treat with our annual Fireworks Party. Our attendance is usually around 1,700 with assigned seating for all of our members and their guests. Many members bring their entire family and all of their friends. We have seating available both inside the clubhouse and outside in various areas, such as on the terraces, the patios, and by the putting green. We set up two big buffets with tons of great picnic food. We have a kiddie play area especially for the little ones with pony rides, face painters, clowns, inflatables, and so much more. There is also live music and, of course, FIREWORKS! With all these activities, there is definitely something for everyone. Call and reserve your table today!

Golf UpdateHopefully, July will bring us much better weather for golfing than June did. We had more rain and wind damage than I care to remember. It is important for the membership to realize that when the golf course is saturated, it is imperative that golfers use extreme caution to make sure they do not cause serious damage with their golf cart. I have always let the carts run when the conditions are marginal, but I need the membership to be good stewards of the golf course to leave the course in the same condition you found it in. Always pay attention to directional signs, ropes and stakes; they are there for a good reason.
The driving range continues to get a lot of use. We still have some members taking patches of divots on the range tee and short game area. For the tee to last the season, it is imperative that space be left between each divot. Just because the golf pro’s on TV take patches, it doesn’t mean its right. Those guys are there a week, and then off to ruin someone else’s range tee the next week. We have a fabulous practice facility and all it takes is everyone doing their part for it to last the season.
With all the heavy rains this past month, ball marks have become a big problem. When you are fixing your ball marks DO NOT lift soil to the surface. Push in on the sides to fill in the ball mark. This will heal so much faster and is much more aesthetically pleasing. If anyone has any questions or needs to be shown how to properly fix a ball mark, please let me know, and I would gladly show them. Sincerely,Jim Hess, Golf Course Superintendent
