Message from the General Manager I was given an article recently from Jack Barber that was several years old, written by a publisher of one of the top club management magazines in the country. As I read this article with interest, it talks about three areas clubs should be focused on for sustainable membership growth in the future: creating a family atmosphere, fitness as a critical component, and the food and beverage effectiveness. I applaud the Club leadership for making those areas a priority in prior years and continuing to make them a priority today. Children are important to the fabric of the club, as made evident by the age specific dining rooms, The Kids Club, the Junior Golf and Tennis programs, the Swim Team, and the Easter, July 4th and holiday events. The Fitness Room is complete with all the essentials and will get attention in the future for upgrades when necessary. The Food & Beverage operation is one of, if not, the best in the city! Add to this the quality golf course conditions and golfing experience, and the quality tennis and paddle tennis programs and you have the finest country club in Indiana!
We recently hosted the most prestigious and oldest food and wine dining society in not only America, but in the world-the Chaine de Rotisseurs. Members of this society were at MHCC from all over the Midwest for a seven course dinner with a wine pairing for each course. The service staff provided “Russian Style” service, with precision food delivery. At the end of the evening the leaders of this society stated, “This has been the best meal we have ever experienced!” Hats off to Executive Chef Joe Miller and the Food Service staff for their performance. You make Meridian Hills Country Club very proud!
The Committee on the Green chaired by Kurt Spitler, is focused on several objectives this year. 1) To establish a “Standards of Maintenance, Practices and Course Set-Up.” This document is available online and in the golf pro shop. Please take time to review this document as it will be helpful for all golf members to understand the objectives of Jim Hess and his staff, as well as the direction of the Committee on the Green. 2) To communicate better with you about course conditions and projects. 3) Encourage members to leave the golf course in better condition than found. Replace or sand your divot, repair your ball marks, and pick up a piece of trash if noticed. Take pride in your course and everyone benefits! Upcoming events this month are: May 5th - Spring Fling, a Cinco de Mayo celebration (the entertainment will be special!). May 13th – Mother’s Day Brunch, 10am – 2pmMay 24th – Family Bingo with Krazy KrisMay 26th – Pool opens for the season at 10amMay 27th – Indy 500 Breakfast and buses to the Indianapolis 500May 28th – Memorial Day, open for lunch & dinnerPlease check elsewhere in this Newsette for May & June events and calendars.We are always open to your comments and suggestions.See you at the Club!

Chairman
The final countdown to the end of the school year has begun. When my children were small, this time of year felt to me like being caught in a crowd, surging steadfast toward one inevitable destination, Summer Break. With it came the anxiety of how to keep young children busy for so many hours each day, and the loss of the cherished “me time” I have when they are in school. Suddenly, my oldest is taller than I am, and I no longer dread the summer days, but see them as a wonderful reprieve. Our schedules are far more flexible. The days grow luxuriously long, and I happily pack away my drill sergeant persona for at least a few months.
For my family, Meridian Hills is our “lake house”. It’s where we come to relax, take a break from the kitchen, and meet up with friends we rarely see during the school year. That being said, I
hope you will join us in kicking off the summer season May 5th at the Spring Fling, a Cinco de Mayo celebration and new member reception. This will be a great event to gather with friends you have not seen in a while, and to meet several of our new members as well. Thanks to the success of our Partner Program, we have welcomed 22 new members.
I hope that you have started planning your summer schedules around golf, tennis, swimming, and lazy Friday evenings by the pool. I look forward to seeing you there.

Greens Committee Update
The Committee on Green feels the practice of good etiquette on the course seems to be slipping and would like to strongly remind all golf members to;
Always replace your divots. Sand should only be used if the divot explodes or is irretrievable. In our climate we have a good chance that the divot will heal if replaced immediately after taking it.
Always fix your ball mark on the green. The USGA states, a ball mark repaired correctly will heal in 3 days while a ball mark not repaired will heal in 2 weeks.
Always keep golf carts on the path by all Green and Tee areas. Nothing causes more damage to the golf course than the improper use of golf carts.The most common problem we have is players driving their carts on the banks of tees and the banks and approaches of greens. These areas are frequently irrigated and therefore more susceptible to damage. Unthinking cart drivers frequently pull two wheels off the path, since they invariably do this next to greens and tees, it is no coincidence that damage is commonplace in these areas.
Please encourage your fellow golfers to practice good course etiquette to ensure the quality of our golf course.
Sincerely,Committee on Green

Mission of Junior GolfThe MHCC Junior Golf program is designed to create a fun atmosphere in an attempt to hook a young golfer on the game quickly. At Meridian Hills, we create a fun and energetic environment to showcase the game of
