We finished up our transportation unit and all of us are excited to start our winter weather unit. Literacy: In “shared reading” we started to read the big book titled, “I Wasn’t Afraid.” After making predictions about what the story might be about the students enjoyed the thrill as each new page displayed an image that might cause any other child to be afraid! The focus the first time through the book was on the difference between fantasy and realistic fiction texts. We will continue delving deeper in this book next week. We finished the capital letters in handwriting using the “Slid-y Slant-y” capital letters Y, Z and A. In reading workshop centers students completed “I Like to Travel and My Car,” books. We made transportation trees listing favorite water, land or air modes of transportation. Sight word practice consisted of sight word trains, rainbow word sheets and word race sheets. New sight words for 2013 are no, like, he, and come. 2 Follow me to page Kindergarten NEWS December 13, 2013 Cover Photo: Annalise proudly displays her AB pattern while working at a math center. Snow, Ice and The Cold

What Do Snowmen Do at Night? This week we read the book “What Do Snowmen Do at Christmas?” Next week the students will hear “What Do Snowmen Do at Night?” then write their own fantasy story about what they would do at night if they were snow boys or snow girls. I look forward to their inventive ideas in their writing. Then the students will design their own snow people using white cotton balls, felt scarves and hats, pipe-cleaner arms, buttons, and glitter!

HELP YOUR CHILD REMEMBER THEIR HATS AND GLOVES!

The students heard the story “The Mitten.” derived from a Ukrainian folktale, this book is retold and illustrated by Jan Brett. The main character, Niki drops one of his white mittens in the snow and one by one animals find the mitten and crawl inside. We have begun coloring the animals and will make large white mittens and practice sequencing the animals inside our own mitten as we retell the story next week.

We also read Snowflakes Are Falling? This is a non-fiction book helping us understand more about snowflakes. We also found time to learn how to play the Sight Word Bingo game as a large group.

Math: We finished Train domino addition, and Color code train cars match centers and began a pattern center using Unifix cubes in order to create AB, ABB, AAB, and ABC patterns. Another pattern center was Color the Pattern sheets using 2-dimensional colored shapes as our guide. We are learning about the concept of addition by playing a game called Cup Dump where we roll two different numbers with a die, then put the matching number of manipulatives in 2 different cups and record the numbers. Next we dump both cups in a bowl and record the total. We also learned a new game called “Race to Trace!” where two students partner up and take turns rolling a die. They trace the number the die lands on. First one who traces all the numbers wins. It’s fun but it also reinforces writing numbers correctly.

Social Studies: We are in the middle of our Empathy unit. This week we learned people can have different feelings about the same situation and learning it is okay for people to have different feelings about the same thing. Learning these key concepts will help us understand that people have different perspectives other than are own. Life would be boring if we all thought the same way!
