Prime LambsWhat a fantastic show and entry of sheep for the mid Christmas and New Year Saturday Market.
A great trade in the lambs for all weights from the handy weights to the heavies.
What will happen into the New Year is anyone’s guess, January can always be a funny month to sell, the problem will be that no handy weight lambs about, and a 40kg lamb could be worth as much as a 55kgs lamb, and the bought in lambs may only just be wiping their faces?! Time will tell!!

With a few more markets operating trade seems to have eased slightly to that experienced pre-Christmas, it will be interesting to follow what happens this week?!

REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY 8 TH JANUARY 2014
AUCTIONEER PAUL GENTRYHOME 01522 789152MOBILE 0780 1032846
771 SLAUGHTER CATTLE SOLD YOUNG BULLS TO 242.5p OTMS TO 226.5p
STEERS TO 259.5p HEIFERS TO 267.5p OVERALL AVERAGE LEVELLED AT 193.84p
Young Bulls - 241 averaged 172.36pBack in full swing this week after the Christmas break and as anticipated large numbers forward, however what was not anticipated was the vast percentage of Holsteins which were present with 116 on offer and unfortunately many of these fell into ‘complete horror’ category.
Today trade felt hard work, although nice bred, well fleshed bulls of all grades were well sort after, leaner plainer bulls were very hard work and very heavy bulls were a struggle but when seeing a few revised grids for certain firms with regard to weight and age of bulls today results would be very favourable.
A word of warning is definitely to market bulls under 700kgs and as young as possible, however I live in the real World and fully appreciate it is not always possible to get bulls well finished inside 16 months!!
Top bull today was consigned by Melton Mowbray vendors Robin and Mark Smith who sold Bazadaise to 242.5p - £1365.28. Robert Hutchinson sold Limousins to 240.5p - £1111.11.
Peter Ownsworth sold Blues to 237.5p - £1448.75. John Farrow sold Bazadaise to 239.5p - £1317.25, George and Dave Holling sold Limousisn to 236.5p - £1371.70 and 235.5p - £1328.22.
Top grossing bulls today were topped by Smiths of Bloxham who sold Limousins to £1635.20 with yours truly selling Limousins to £1565.20 and Stuart Dore making a clean sweep with Limousins to £1533.06.
Today E grades weighing up to 650kgs sold from 228p with U+’s 223-227 and –U grades 215-222p and R grades 200-214p, O+’s 190-198p and –O’s 178-118p.
Best Friesians very thin on the ground and sold from 176-186p with meated Holsteins 158-168p, plainer sorts 140-150p, horrors 130-138p, more horrors 115-125p and the worst of the worst 90-110p.

Back to normal after the Festive Period, and a similar number of lambs seen.
Trade seems to also have edged back to that experienced pre – Christmas with an SQQ today of 174p/kg returning all in 170.26p.
The trade is a slight worry with some store lambs bought but I suppose with all Markets back running there will have been a bit of a glut to get rid of, hopefully things will settle down next week?! One influencing factor that must be watched though is the £/€ relationship which could hamper exports.
Don’t Forget Wednesdays and Saturdays we will be pleased to see you with Sheep at Newark!!
