Tiwi VisitNovember 30Clontarf and Stronger Smarter Sister’s each played games of AFL against students from Tiwi Island who were visiting the Katherine Region for their end of year camp. The boys game was a close one, but the Tiwi girls were too good on the day. Everyone enjoyed the event.

Science UpdateAs part of the End of Year Pro-gram students in Science have beem working on Crime Scene Investigations, gaining ba-sic skills and making students aware of Science-based ca-reer options. Each student has been re-searching a forensic career and being involved in many “hands on” activities including prepar-ing identikits photos and plas-ter casting footprints. Over the remainder of the year students will be given the opportunity to experience fi nger printing, mug shots and creating individual-ized “most wanted” sketches. Some classes will have the op-portunity to get involved in a re-enactment of a Crime Scene Investigation. This has been a fun unit of work for Middle Years students who have gained re-port writing and presentation skills and a taste of what is avail-able in Senior Years Science.

BasketballNovember 25Bright and early, 14 girls head-ed to Darwin to compete in the Indigenous Girls Basket-ball Competition. After they had shaken off their fi rst game nerves, the girls played ex-tremely well showing their skills which had been developed in their PE class, during their bas-ketball unit. In their fi nal games both teams had a well de-served win, placing them 3rd in each of their pools respect-fully. The girls’ sportsmanship and attitude was fantastic and a credit to themselves and the school. A massive thank you to Jodi Stanley and Denise Arnold for all their help on the day.

Bell Shakespeare For the past two weeks, two professional actors and arts educators have been deliv-erying workshops at Katherine High School. The workshops have provided the opportunity for our students to experience Shakespeare by ‘acting’ out scenes from various Shake-speare plays, with the goal of making Shakespeare relevant to todays students.Through the practical activities and groups discussions, great fun was had by all. Thank you to Paul and George for a great two weeks. We look forward to a continued relationship with the Bell Shakespeare Compa-ny in the future.

The Road to GoveWords by Matthew HamdorfPhotos by Matthew Hamdorf

On Wednesday, October 26, the Katherine Academy met up with the Jabiru Academy for a joint venture to Yirrkala. The boys traveled along the Central Arnhem Highway through various communities, across a number of water crossings to fi nally reach Yirrkala where we were greeted by Rob and Hamish and a number of the Yirrkala Academy members.

LEADERSHIPKatherine Academy November 28, 2011

The boys from all three Academies quickly built a strong friendship playing table tennis and pool. After a quick meet and greet from Rob and Hamish it was time to get stuck into the fantastic stir fry that Yirrkala Academy had cooked up for us.

The next day all three Academies were up early and heading back down the highway to the Bukudal Culture camp. After some four wheel driving we found ourselves at the camp site.

The locals then put us through a welcome ceremony with the all the boys getting their face painted as part of this ceremony.

After a quick bite to eat we were taken out bush to fi nd ourselves wood to make our own spears. Once the boys had collected the wood we put the unmade spears on the fi re so we could remove the bark and straighten the wood.

Once this was done the spears were left out in the sun to dry out over night.

We then all jumped into the troopies to head down to the beach for some fi shing. Unfortunately due to getting bogged a couple of the times the fi shing didn’t eventuate. We may not have gone fi shing but we defi nitely had fun driving through the sand dunes on the beach.

For dinner that night the Yirrkala boys cooked up a massive BBQ which was enjoyed by all. The next morning we were up early so we could continue with our spear making.

Once this was fi nished it was time for some fi shing. Brad Copeland managed to catch a Golden Trevally which was greatly received back at camp.

The locals quickly showed us how they cook fi sh the traditional way. After a quick feast of the fi sh we again headed out bush to make our own didgeridoo.

We then were supplied with roast beef, chicken and veggies that were all cooked in the ground on hot coals. With an early start the next day it was time for bed.

We were up early and packed up ready for some more four wheel driving. We arrived back in Nhulunbuy to enjoy a swim. Then it was time to get ready to play some AFL. This was the fi rst time Jabiru, Yirrkala and Katherine had combined to ply against another team.

The boys played in true Clontarf spirit and demonstrated why they had been rewarded with attending this camp. We then watched the Djurekkura Cup played between Yirrkala and Gapawiyak.

After a quick shower it was into Nhulunbuy for dinner where the boys enjoyed a choice of fi sh & chips, steak & chips and pizzas. The next day we were up early heading our way back to Katherine.

A big thanks goes out to the Yirrkala Academy for hosting us and Bukudal men for show us their country and some of their traditional ways and Jabiru for assisting us in our travels.
