Principal’s Update This week we have been en- tertained by this Year’s Musical Production ‘The Mikado’. Well done to all the students and staff who contributed to this event. It was fantastic! We are finalising staffing for 2012 so it would be appreciat- ed if parents could inform the school if their children are not returning. It has been quite a difficult fort- night with staff absences and managing the ‘end of year’ behaviour of a small group of students. The change in weath- er and the nature of Term 4 provides some challenges as students become tired and it gets hotter. The focus of the school for the remainder of the term will be to maintain students focus on their work. Students who disrupt the good order of the school through inappropriate behav- iour or truanting, may be sent home for the remainder of the day on which they misbehave. It is important at this stage of the year we maintain an envi- ronment that is safe and con- ducive to learning; we would appreciate parent support in regards to this consequence for inappropriate behaviour for the remainder of the term. Principal Year 8 Kununurra Trip Year Eight students from KHS set off for our camp in Kununurra, Western Australia. There were a lot of firsts during this camp – first time outside the NT; first time in Western Australia; first time camping; and first time on a cruise. Over the four days, students had many opportuni- ties to work together to build and maintain safe and sup- portive relationships through a variety of activities. A huge thank you to the staff for giving up their time. A full report can be founf on the KHS website. Jo Stewart Kununurra Proudly Supported by Katherine Regional Community Bank ® Branch

Musical - The MikadoNovember 2-4Last night was the culmination of many months of dedicated work by Miss Sarah Earle and a handful of committed stu-dents to present The Mikado. More than twenty students honed their dramatic skills to suit the fun and frivolity of the music and libretto of Gilbert and Sullivan. Well done to all concerned and a particular thanks to those who gave of their expertise and time to en-sure a successful performance. To the students who put in the effort both on and off stage, thanks, in particular to Ms Sue Shea, Miss Jen Watts and Ms Josie Kelland who gave gener-ously of their time. Take the op-portunity to join the cast and crew tonight at 6:30 in the gym for their fi nal performance.

Parent Teacher NightOctober 26Parent Teacher night was a great opportunity for parents and teachers to get togeth-er to discuss students’ prog-ress. Once again it was held in the gym and a steady fl ow of parents came through. It was very pleasant with some parents taking the time to dis-cuss next year’s timetable and make adjustments as required. The atmosphere was relaxed and smiling faces could be seen where everyone went home satisfi ed that they had achieved their goal. Parents are encouraged to contact their childs teachers directly via email if you were unable to make this event.

Star EmployeeCongratulations to John Humphries for being Katheirne High School’s Star Employee this fortnight. Your hard work in ICT is appreciated, keep up the good work!

ToonSchoolOctober 25Author/Cartoonist/Illustrator Jeff (‘Joffa’) Taylor held Toon-school workshops with our Mid-dle Years students. The work-shops were well received from all participants and provided the opportunity for students to explore their cartoon drawing skills as well as value difference in others and engage in social skills development.

Work Experience in CanberraWords by Jason GreenePhotos by Jason Greene

The annual Learn Earn Legend work experience program was held in Canberra from September 11-16. Over 100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Year 11 and 12 students were selected from all over Australia to attend with fi ve Clontarf students being selected. We had Zane Slater from West Arnhem College (Jabiru Campus), Jake Gablonski, Mathew Goven and Lawrence Watego from Katherine Academy and Allan Stream from Midwest Academy.

October 25, 2011

The students had two days work experience in Parliament House followed by two days working in government departments. Zane, Mathew and Allan experienced life within Dept of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).

Jake spent time with the Australian Federal Police while Lawrence spent his time with Dept of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

It was not all work. They also got to visit the Australian Institute of Sport and try out some of the facilities and enjoy an evening dinner with tennis great Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

By pure chance we all had breakfast and watched Sam Stosur win the US Open with Evonne, a treat to remember forever.

The 2012 Learn Earn Legend tour will give you the opportunity to try life in the nation’s capital again working in Parliament House. We look forward to seeing you there.
