GraduateSpotlight

Dental Hygiene majors are recognizable due to their bright smiles and oneof the brightest smiles among the May 2010 graduates belonged to Joe Vela, a

dental hygienist at “Kool Smiles” in Laredo.

He’s also quite recognizable standing at a height of 6 feet, 7 inches. He is one of avery few students to score a perfect 100 on the clinical exam for the Western RegionalExamination Board, said Barb Bennett, co-director of the Allied Health Technology Divisionat TSTC Harlingen.

“The Harlingen program has a 97 percent passing rate for the national boards because it’sa very tough program that thoroughly prepares its graduates,” Vela said. “I wanted a careerwhere I would not worry about down-sizing for personnel. I also wanted good hours, good payand a good income for my family.”

He said that experiencing the “real world” of dental clinics during rotations, workingclosely with faculty and leading community service projects gave him a well rounded education.

A wonderful tale of courage and adventure, this film is an absolute must for everyone.

Legend of the Guardians is based on the fantasy book series Guardians of Ga'Hoole by KathrynLasky. The story is about a kidnapped owl, Soren, who manages to escape his attackers, the Pure Ones, and sets off to find the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole in order to save his family. The film focuseson the first three books in the series so a sequel to Legend of the Guardians could be in the works.

The thought of owls wearing viking-like helmets and metal claws should be enough to persuadeanyone into watching this movie. The hyper-realistic animation is absolutely breathtaking. Children willlove the kid-friendly humor while the battle scenes are exciting enough to not bore the most jadedteenager. A word of caution for those bringing little ones to the theater : Although the battle scenesare bloodless, they have the potential to scare younger children.

anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus. But in TimSlover's deeply charming and utterly thrilling newnovel, that's the end rather than the beginning of thestory. In this richly imagined tale of Santa's origins, theman in full finally emerges.

Louisa May Alcott never intended towrite Little Women. She haddismissed her publisher's pleas forsuch a novel. Written out of necessityto support her family, the book hadan astounding success that changedher life. Alcott's independence defied

the conventional wisdom, and her personal choicesand literary legacy continue to inspire generations ofwomen. Cheever brings a unique perspective toLouisa May Alcott's life as a woman, a daughter, anda working writer.
