When someone thinks of a mentor, they may draw an image of the BigBrother/Big Sister program or perhapsthe old apprenticeship programs forthose pursuing a trade. On a collegecampus, one may believe that onlystudents who are doing poorly in classneed a mentor, but this is far from true.

The fact is anyone can benefit fromhaving a mentor in their corner, from thestudent on academic probation to theone who was just earned a place on thePresident’s Honor Roll. You may wonderwhy, when you hold an A average, wouldyou “need” a mentor. Mentors can be abenefit to anyone for this simple reason:versatility.

In sports, the versatile athlete is theone who can play several sports andexcel. In a band, the versatile musician isthe one who can switch from oneinstrument to another seamlessly. AtTSTC, Peer Mentors are just as versatile.Because student needs vary, PeerMentors can help in different ways.

The Office of Student Success PeerMentoring Program has Mentors who canhelp you! Whether the problem has to dowith life on or off campus, finances oracademics, mentors can be counted on topoint their students in the right direction.

TSTC Support Services staff and Non-Traditional Ambassadors visited theHarlingen Public Library to get local community children excited about insects.Participants learned what classifies a "bug" as an insect and got to build theirown bug at the end of the presentation. The project is part of SupportServices ongoing TECHquity program designed to promote STEAM skills andcareers by engaging participants ages 4-12 in fun hands-on activities correlatedto TSTC Non-Traditional programs of study.

Rumors on the Net: New GoogleSocial Network “Google Me”

Google is rumored to dish out a Facebookcompetitor allegedly called “Google Me.” Therumor was first leaked by Digg.com Founder andCEO Kevin Rose in a tweet that read:

Soon thereafter, the tweet was taken down andon the Internet this only feeds the flames aboutpossible credibility. Some time later an ex-Facebook executive, Adam D’Angelo, stoodbehind Kevin’s rumor and said, “This is a realproject. There are a large number of peopleworking on it. I am completely confident about

this.” D’Angelo points out that Google is putting alot more into it as a “high-quality project,” and areaction to the fact that Facebook’s growth hasnot slowed as Google anticipated.

Although it seems like Facebook cannot beovershadowed right now, this is Google we’rewriting about. They would be the ones, if anyone,to have the power and resources to shake anindustry leader like Facebook. Then again, Googlewas not so triumphant when it attempted to takesome of the market from Twitter with itsintroduction of Google Buzz. Google Wave alsoflopped before Buzz and both were held in highregard when launched by Google. This could reallygo either way and we’ll have to wait and see.

Recently TechCrunch reported that Google alsoinvested between $100 million and $200 millioninto the online social gaming tycoon Zynga. Zynga

is the producer of such hit social games as“Farmville” and “Mafia Wars.” I am sure you haveseen these titles in your Facebook request inbox.Speculation is that Google is planning a socialgaming platform called Google Games that in turncould be fused into the new Google Me socialnetwork experience.

Truth be told, there are plenty of rumors andspeculation surrounding the alleged projects insuch early stages. Google is not commenting onany of the matters and keeping it pretty hush-hush. No release date or leaked interface conceptsyet, but I’m sure the Internet will deliver soon.Google will have to up the ante on the design sideof this new project because as before thefunctionality is present, but lacking in visual appeal.

Make Money? …on the Internet?Yes, it’s true. Youtube announced a program that will award its top

independent video bloggers, or vloggers, grants varying in the tens to hundreds ofthousands of dollars. In total, Youtube plans to give away $5 million to boostproduction values of the content providers, which are often low quality.

Manager of Partner Development at Youtube George Strompolos sees thegrants as an “important investment to make in the future of our original contentpartners.” Strompolos announced the program at Vidcon, which is the firstYoutube conference, put together by the community itself. It had a turn out ofmore than 1,000 users.

Youtube has created a scenario where everyone wins here. The vloggersgain funding to use as they wish whether for equipment, a new project or hiringactors. It can be a great help for these viral pioneers. On the side of Youtube thisis another chance for great content to be created that gains more traction andviews, which in turn generates more eyes on their site, which means moreadvertising dollars.

Those of the top Youtube vloggers twho are invited to apply for these grantswill be chosen based on their marketing, ideas, track record and other criteria.Should this program take off and generate the sort of numbers that Youtube likesthen the program can be taken to a wider spectrum of Youtube users.

Capcom’s “Dead Rising” was a popular zombie survivalhorror hit in 2006. The story revolved around aphotojournalist who was trying to uncover the truth aboutthe zombie epidemic while still trying defend against attacksand rescue survivors. While it was an interesting perspective, the only setback was the time limit.

“Dead Rising 2” takes place five years after the SantaCabeza incident in “Dead Rising 1”, which had multipleendings depending on how you finished the three-daymission. This time, Dead Rising 2 puts you in the heart ofFortune City that was modeled after the gambling andnightlife of Las Vegas. That’s right folks! You get to gamblewith the undead and steal their chips and become rich whileslaying them as you proceed with your missions.

In this game you play the protagonist by the name ofChuck Greene and his mission is to save his daughter, Katie. In the storyline, Katie has become infected but has yet toturn into a zombie. Chuck is running through Fortune Cityto find Zombrex, a cure for the infection, while having tochoose between right and wrong. Remember, just like inDR1, the choices you make in this game will cause yourpath to develop!

Not only will you have to save your daughter but defendyourself from attackers who believe you have caused thezombie outbreak. The 72-hour time limit has returned, butthis time players will have to stop every 24 hours to feedKatie more medicine. This was intended help players keeptrack of their time limit. But for the main story's sake, Chuck

needs to get out of the city in 72 hours! Are you up to itand think you can survive that long?

Now running around the city and slaying zombies withyour bare hands isn’t going to be as easy as it looks. This iswhen DR2 brings in the new feature of customizingweapons! You now have the ability to cut up and killzombies with a chainsaw if you want to!

Thanks to the combat system players can create absurdweapons. DR2 also injects its own weird sense of humor byadding crazy new weapons and having zombies react tothem in humorous ways. There are a number of places inthe game where you can go in and sit on a workbench tocreate weapon combinations. Anything with a wrench iconon it can combined but you don't know what it can joinedwith until you get back to a workshop to test out the items. There are a lot of weapons out there and it’s up to you tobe creative to save the world!

Being the only player trying to save the world can take alot of work so there’s a new Co-op feature where a friendcan jump in to help you save the city! The story onlyprogresses for the host so if the host is ahead of the guest, the guest will return to his or her own game with his or herown story progression. However, the guest can jump intothe host's game with his own equipment and Prestigepoints. He can then return to his or her own un-progressedgame with any new things that he or she found or earned inthe host’s game.

DR2 is set to be released on September 28 for the Xbox360, PS3, and PC. You think you’re ready to take on zombiesalong with your sidekick? Get ready to gamble and slaughter!
