SUPPORT SERVICES

There is no excuse forabuse. You deserve tobe loved.

The slogans and advice gathered October5 during the Clothesline Project oncampus increased public awareness aboutfamily violence and the clothesline stoodon display in the TSTC Cultural ArtsCenter during the Candlelight Vigil, aspecial tribute to 2010 victims, held onOctober 6.

A series of banners with headlines fromlocal newspapers about family conflictsthat ended with murders lined the roomand several speakers summarized thebeatings, stabbings, shootings andstrangulations that claimed lives.

Judge David Sanchez, who presides overDistrict Court 444 in Brownsville, described some of the domestic violencecases that he reviews. Many of the crimesinvolve a series of incidents that extendacross generations.

“Everything you do as a parent, you’reteaching your children. We, as parents, setthe foundation for what our children aregoing to be whether it involves love, laughter, cooperation, success … orarguments and fights,” he said.

The Family Crisis Center, TSTC SupportServices Office and TSTC CounselingServices sponsored the event. The Website for the Family Crisis Center iswww.familycrisisctr.org and the hotline is866.423.9304.

Please make sure that you "Aim for A's andnothing less than C's" this semester to avoidscholastic and/or financial aid suspension.

Scholastic policies dictate that students on probation who fail toearn a 2.0 term GPA or above this semester will be unable toregister at TSTC for one semester. Keep in mind that differentpolicies apply to Financial Aid, so we recommend you also talk toa Financial Aid representative to determine how your financial aideligibility may be affected.

Students who wish to appeal scholastic suspension and aregranted an appeal, will be required to participate in a mandatorymentoring program (HATSS Mentoring Program) as a conditionfor registration. An appeal does not guarantee acceptance intothe HATSS program and therefore TSTC.

We have many programs and services that can help you succeedincluding tutoring, mentoring, and referrals to on-campusresources as well as resources off campus. Check out the linksbelow for more information.

How did you decide topursue a career fieldtraditionally dominated bymen and work that manypeople view as rather dirtyand gritty?

Careers within the automotiveindustry are a tradition in my family.I grew up in the car industry due tomy father’s interests. My father and Iliked to do mechanical work, bodywork and car refinishing. A majorplus was that I like to show menthat a girl could do the work just aswell. I do not like to be judged onthe assumption that because I amfemale I should have limitedexpectations. My parents always liketo show off my techniques andsurprise people.

What do you tell people whoexpress surprise when theylearn about your AUBtraining and career plans?

I usually say, “What’s wrong with it?Women need to show men that wecan do it, too!” Some people do notget over the surprise, but otherswant to know exactly what I do andI explain it to them.

What are your leadershiproles in AUB, SkillsUSA,Support Services Office andother organizations? Whydid you step up to become aleader and what are thebenefits of extra-curricularinvolvement?

I am president for Auto BodySkillsUSA (AUB) and I received theStudent of the Year Award for 2010-2011 at TSTC. I also was named the

most active club member for 2010-2011 with Donald Wilt as clubadvisor. I earned a national bronzemedal in SkillsUSA. I am a non-traditional student ambassador forthe Support Services Offices withAnna Cortez as the advisor. I amactive in the Student GovernmentAssociation, I am a silver certifiedleader in the “Learning to Lead”program, and I am a recurringgraduate from the mini-institute forcritical thinking. I always like to setexample for my colleagues or simplybecome a leader who takes positivepaths that benefit others.

How do you schedule andbalance the time you spendon your college education, business interests andfamily life?

My answer is always multi-task andsupport! Support is the mostimportant. The club officers andadvisors help me out this semesterand it makes my tasks go smootheras club president. My employer, Dr.Zamir, allows me to adjust myschedule and gives meencouragement. My husband, Tony, helps me because he’s a club officerand supports me in everything I do,including household and familyresponsibilities while I work. If aperson multi-tasks, sets goals andhas support, he or she can becomea great achiever.

What are your plans or goalsafter you graduate?

I want to become an estimator oran adjustor in the auto-collisionindustry. My husband and I mightopen our own shop in the future.

What are your hobbies orforms of relaxation?

I like to listen to country musicwhile I work on cars. I like racing, mud bogging, mechanics, and doingbody work. Cars are my passion andmarriage gave me the last name of“Carr.” It’s easy to say that my liferevolves around cars.

What words of wisdom doyou have for high schoolstudents considering highereducation or for studentsnew to the collegeexperience?

I have great respect for Jose Vargas, chairman of the AUB program. Heonce told me, “If it is to be, it is upto me.” That’s exactly what I wouldtell high school students or newcollege students. I have paid closeattention to the saying and learnedit’s true. I have taken on manychallenges in life to test my skills orabilities and I always go back to thatslogan. Besides the auto industry, Ihave experience as an accountant, notary, bookkeeper, tax advisor andpreparer, medical officemanagement and more. I believeevery individual should be willing toexplore. And ladies, you can domore than you realize. Show theworld what you can do!

An increase in public transit riders toTexas StateTechnical College onexisting public bus connectionsencouragedValley Metro to schedule anew route that will linkTSTC studentsto Los Fresnos and Brownsville.

Several agencies and governmentgroups provided input that led to thecreation of Route 45 which isscheduled to open January 2, 2012 tobegin spring semester.TSTC and theUniversity of Texas at Brownsville willbe the two locations at the west andeast ends of the route. In between, there will be stops at theValleyTransitCo. station in Harlingen, San BenitoCity Hall, Los Fresnos City Hall, LosFresnos Memorial Park, the BrownsvilleMultimodal Terminal and UTB.

Rodney Gomez, programadministrator forValley Metro, toldTSTC students at a meeting oncampus October 12 that the originalgoal for Route 45 was to provide

public transportationtoLos Fresnos High Schoolstudents and graduates tohigher education andemployment inBrownsville and Harlingen. The buses will roll 4,290hours per year from 6a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondaysthrough Fridays; aSaturday schedule ispossible if there’s riderdemand. Signs with

schedule information will be posted atthe route pickup and drop-off sites.

“The idle time at each stop is minimalbecause of the schedule timing,”ValleyMetro DirectorTom Logan said.“Ridersshould be at the pickup point a fewminutes early because the driverscannot wait very long to stay on aschedule that all passengers expect.”

Special reservations for pickups anddrop-offs within one-half mile of theroute may be made if riders phone800.574.8322 a day in advance.

Route 45 also should reach low-income and elderly riders, Logan said.Students with proper identificationcards ride at half price, only 75 centsone way.Tickets for elderly, disabled, military veterans and Medicarepassengers also are half price.Apackage of 20-ride tickets is $10 forriders in these categories.Adult regularfare is $1.50 or $20 for 20 rides.

Tickets are sold at theTSTCBookstore andValley Metro plans tomake ticket purchases available at theLos Fresnos City Hall and at LosFresnos High School.

Children under 7 accompanied by anadult ride free. Riders should paydrivers with the exact fare becausedrivers do not carry change. The busesare equipped with lifts for wheelchairsand racks for up to two bicycles.

The public transit system operates busroutes withTSTC connections that gothrough San Benito, La Feria, SantaRosa and Primera.Wall maps atTSTCare located next to the Student LifeOffice in the Student Center and atthe Housing Office. Down These Strange Streetsby George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dozois (editor)

The Best of Meby Nicholas Sparks

New LRC ReleasesCHECK THEM OUT TODAY!

In the fall of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for oneanother seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear theyoung couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

In this all-new collection of urban fantasy stories, editors George R.R. Martin and GardnerDozois explore the places where mystery waits at the end of every alley and where thethings that go bump in the night have something to fear...

Includes stories by New York Times bestselling authors Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs,Diana Gabaldon, Simon R. Green, S. M. Stirling, and Carrie Vaughn, as well as tales by GlenCook, Bradley Denton, M.L.N. Hanover, Conn Iggulden, Laurie R. King, Joe R. Lansdale, JohnMaddox Roberts, Steven Saylor, Melinda Snodgrass, and Lisa Tuttle.

Hi, y’all! This book is my proudest achievement so far, and I just have to tell y’all why I am soexcited about it. It’s a book of classic dishes, dedicated to a whole new generation of cooks—for every bride, graduate, and anyone who has a love of a great Southern meal. My family isgrowing and expanding all the time. We’re blessed with marriages and grandbabies, and sosharing these recipes for honest, down-home dishes feels like passing a generation’s worth ofstovetop secrets on to my family, and yours.
