So it’s that ti me of the year again when my wife asks me to step in as Guest Editor and write a Father’s Day lett er. I had a limerick in mind that would have been perfect, but it was vetoed by the Editor.
I have two amazing kids who will normally wake me up on Father’s Day with eggs and bacon in bed (I pretend to be asleep, but normally I am woken up by the banging and crashing coming from the kitchen). I am sure the brekkie will be cold, because they have a ti ming issue with getti ng the whole breakfast ready at the same ti me, but it’s not about the food – it’s about them bringing it through, singing a song (yes, I get a Happy Father’s Day song) and jumping into bed with me.
This year however we will be in the bush, so I will be getti ng the undivided att enti on of my whole family – there will be no TVs, no Internet and no friends to interrupt my Father’s Day weekend. Yes a whole week-end...and I am going to make the most of it.
What would be the highlight of this whole weekend would be some Top Gear ti ckets (hint, hint...). I would have to race back from the bush to make the show on Sun-day, but it would be worth it.
So to all the fathers out there, be sur-prised and appreciati ve when you get a ti e, socks or soap-on-a-rope and have an amazing day!

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeFoaming Bath Salts
The company Therific Naturals stocks a range of award-winning Magnesium Sulphate products. The kiddies’ range is called Kid-dy-Calm, the adult range Mai-Thaim, and for pregnant women, newborns and those with sensitive skin, there is Pure-Thaim.
With Kiddy-Calm it is possible to bath your kids to better be-haviour! Kiddy-Calm is specially aimed at children and comes in five funky colours and fragrances. To add to the fun, Kiddy-Calm produces an abundance of bubbles when added to hot running water.
Your body requires sulphate as a pathway to process all the artificial additives and toxins found in modern manufactured foods. The body, including those of our children, may have more toxins to pro-cess than it can manage due to lack of sulphate. To alleviate the unpleasant re-actions such as hyperactivity, aggression, tantrums, sleep problems, night sweats, irritability, eczema and other skin condi-tions, as well as headaches, migraines and muscle tension, add some Kiddy-Calm to your children’s bath tub and see them calm down!
The adult product, Mai-Thaim, comes in five sensual fragrances and gives an abun-dance of bubbles when added to hot run-ning water. With frequent use, the reduc-tion of food additives stored in the body will relieve muscle tension, stress, joint pains, headaches and improve sleep pat-terns.
People with sensitive skin can benefit from the product Pure-Thaim – a bubble- and colour-free range suitable for those with severe eczema, prone to infection, and for use during labour and on newborn babies. It is infused with tiny amounts of coconut oil to prevent drying of skin.

St Charles College Learner Enjoys Cricket Honour
The South African Nati onal Cricket team played a test match in Durban at the Sa-hara Stadium in March this year. It is per-haps every young man’s dream to walk out onto the fi eld with his cricketi ng he-roes. Dylan McGuire is a cricket admirer and a Dolphins’ Club member, and had the honour of walking out onto the fi eld whilst proudly carrying the South African fl ag. This is an opportunity one does not get all that oft en and St Charles College were delighted that Dylan had this experi-ence.
Dylan is a learner at St Charles College Prep School. It is an independent, Chris-ti an Boys’ College situated in Scott sville, Pietermaritzburg. St Charles College ca-ters for day boys from Grade 00 to Matric, and boarders from Grade 4 upwards. The school follows the curriculum set by the University of Cambridge, and writes the University of Cambridge Internati onal Ex-aminati ons.

Kumon
Education You Can Count On
PMB Central Kumon • Lulama Mbatha 072 596 2767
PMB central KUMON centre is located in Peter Kerchhoff Street in PMB. It was opened on the 1st of December 2012. It offers English and Maths programmes and is open three times a week i.e. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and caters for all ages and abilities. The centre is managed and run by dedicated and motivated instructors and staff who have extensive experience in education.
The Kumon programme allows each child to practice to become competent in the fundamental areas of Maths and English. But it also instills other important qualities and long-term skills in children including:
• Mental agility• Good study habits• Confidence• Commitment and self discipline• Reduction in anxiety• Practice
Each child’s progress is made possible by giving them all the practice they need and the ability to learn for themselves. A strong partnership between the child, the Kumon instructor and their parents, is created. Parental participation and involvement is an integral part of the process.
Kumon’s method provides every child with guidance and support, but puts each child’s learning in their own hands. Kumon study allows them to succeed through their own efforts at their own pace in tandem with their studies at school. So whether a child is struggling and needs more practice, or is gifted and wants to be stretched further, Kumon’s unique learning method makes this possible. The child leaves the centre feeling confident and motivated.
In practice the key aspects of kumon learning are:
• Success from the start. Each child begins their study at the easy starting point determined through assessment.• Daily study. This allows confidence to grow and solid study skills to develop. They attend at the centre twice a week and will be given homework to complete on non centre days.• Individual progress. Children progress at their own pace.• Mastery through practice. • Independent learning. • Transferable self learning skills, for use at school and throughout life.

Saying Goodbye to a ChildSaying goodbye to a child who is leav-ing home to forge his way in the world is the hardest thing I think there is to do. I have lived through divorce, diffi cult work matt ers and starti ng my own business. To wave goodbye to your oldest and young-est all rolled into one is heartbreaking.
A week before he left , he overslept and had to rush to work. His fi rst reacti on was: “Mom, you didn’t wake me.” How do you answer that when you know that very soon it will no longer be your responsibil-ity?
He was born into this world with big blue eyes, a smile to dazzle and character to charm. It has not been an easy road to where he is today, but perseverance and hard work has paid off . He is a loving child with a mind of his own.
I remember clearly trying to dress him in winter – when he didn’t want to dress warmly. A ti me-out on the veranda in his underpants was a quickly learnt lesson!
He adored his father so divorce was hard on him.
Junior school, high school and university all completed with good results. Toast-masters, Sunday school leader and friend. Sportsman, cousin and nephew, barman, house sitt er and boyfriend.
So, when your young child is driving you round the bend, remember that it is a process of you getti ng them ready. Ready for when they get into their own cars and wave you goodbye. It’s how they cope – the result of your anguish – that makes you proud.
To all mothers who have waved their ba-bies goodbye – you are not alone!
