Surprise Weekend AwayI am so lucky to have the most amazing husband. He treated me to a surprise long weekend away in Cape Town for Valentine’s Day – no kids! I had not been to Cape Town for many years, and not since it had been voted the number one tourist destination in the world. It was very easy to see why straight away. • Everything is clean and beautiful – no litter, no potholes.• The public transport system (that works) is utilised by so many locals and visitors.• The staff at the hotel are friendly, all the time, and nothing is too much trouble.• The service at restaurants and pubs is brisk and efficient (with the exception of one restaurant at the Waterfront).• Kalk Bay was my absolute favourite place to visit – the main road is lined with quaint little shops (and I have found the business I want to buy when I retire – the local Kalk Bay bookshop).• Hout Bay was my favourite place to eat – Chapman’s Peak Hotel serves THE best calamari in the world.• The beaches are stunning, and once your extremities go numb, the water is really not that cold.• The views are world class – as gorgeous as Italy, but cleaner. And yet I won’t be moving to the fairest Cape any time soon – you just cannot beat our KZN weather ALL year round. While I may not be a born and bred Natalian, I think I have been here long enough to finally qualify to be called a “local”. Alicexxx

Everyday LifeWhen Jazz was King

When Jazz was King, starring Tonya Koenderman, will be performed at the Rhumbelow Theatre, Allen Wilson Shellhole on Sunday 2 March at 2pm and 6.30pm. The venue opens 90 minutes before the show and patrons are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets. The year is 1935, and the music is Jazz! Names such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Duke Ellington rule the music scene.

These were strange times indeed: America was still very racially divided, but Jazz appealed to both black and white. The likes of Louis Armstrong even got to sit in white-only restaurants as well as gain access to the upper echelons of American society because of his abundant talent and charm. Such was the power of this vibrant new style of music they called “Jazz”. In her latest one-woman show, the lively and vivacious Tonya Koenderman pays tribute to that exciting era when Jazz ruled supreme. She touches briefly on the history of Jazz, tells interesting Jazz-related anecdotes, but most of all, she pays tribute to the great Jazz classics. Tickets are R120 (R100 for pensioners and tables of eight or more). Braais, parking and a bar are available. No alcohol may be brought onto the premises.

Everyday LifeHappy Earth Festival

Some fun and scary facts: Did you know that a plastic bag takes over 200 years to decompose in a landfill site? Did you know that recycling an aluminium tin can save energy to run the TV for three hours? Did you know that a mature leafy tree is producing enough oxygen to support two people and absorbing carbon dioxide at the same time! Want to know more about the environment and how we can make a difference with our lifestyle choice? Then come along to the Happy Earth Festival! It is organised by the Happy Earth Environmental Education and Sustainability Forum, a multi-department and multi-stakeholder volunteer association of passionate environmental educators. The Happy Earth Festival will be run over two days, 11 and 12 April, at the KZN National Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg. It is open to school groups on Friday and parents, children

and interested members of the public are encouraged to attend on Saturday. The Friday morning will focus on hands-on activities for learners and teachers with organisations such as SANBI, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Singakwenza, DUCT and WESSA Eco-schools. Registration for participating organisations is still open. There will also be a “Survivor” obstacle course through the gardens. WESSA Pietermaritzburg Eco-Schools will be recognised at the annual Eco-Schools Awards Ceremony on Friday afternoon. Saturday will have a full programme including an up-cycle fashion show, workshop for teachers and interested parties, and environmental stands where they can learn about environmental and sustainable topics. Entry to the Botanical Gardens for the Happy Earth Festival will be free.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeTreat ADHD Naturally

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex mental health disorder that can affect a child’s success in school and with interpersonal relationships. Symptoms vary and are sometimes difficult to recognise.

Here are seven common signs that may indicate ADHD:• The Me Me syndrome – a common sign of ADHD is an inability to recognise other people’s needs and desires.• Emotional turmoil – a child with ADHD may have difficulty keeping emotions both good and bad in check.• Fidget and squirm – children with ADHD often can’t sit still.• Unfinished task – a child with ADHD may show interest in lots of different things but may have problems seeing them through to the end.• Lack of focus – a child with ADHD may have trouble paying attention even when

being spoken to directly.• Careless mistakes – children with ADHD often have trouble following instructions that require planning and executing a plan, which leads to careless mistakes.• Day dreamer – children with ADHD are typically portrayed as rambunctious and loud, however another possible sign of ADHD is being quieter and less involved than the other kids. A child with ADHD may stare into space, as if dreaming, and ignore what’s going on around him or her.

Consider treating ADHD with holistic measures, e.g. the use of Himalaya Healthcare’s Mentat. Himalaya Health-care’s Mentat, Syrup and Tablets, is the ONLY product fully endorsed by ADHDSA. It assists with a range of ADHD-related symptoms and is available at all independent pharmacies and health shops.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeThe Five Love Languages

of ChildrenYou have probably heard of Gary Chapman’s book “The Five Love Languages” which focuses on couple communication. In his collaboration with Ross Campbell, Gary now elaborates on what the five love languages look like when applied to children.

When parenting children, everything relies on the love relationship between parent and child. Nothing works well if a child’s love needs are not met. The authors say that for a child to feel love, we must learn to speak their unique love language. Every child has a special way of perceiving love. As parents, when we speak our child’s primary love language, we can fill their “emotional tank” with love. When these tanks are full then our children will do their best and reach their potential.

Unconditional love is an all-encompassing love that accepts and affirms a child for who she/he is, not for what they do. Its message is “no matter what you do or don’t do my love for you does not change”. Conditional love, on the contrary, is based on performance and is often given with gifts, rewards and privileges to make children behave in a desired manner.

Some parents assume that because they love their children, the children should automatically know this, i.e. telling your child “I love you” will be sufficient communication. Children are behaviourally motivated and so parents must also show their love through their actions. These behavioural expressions of love are: physical touch, quality time, gifts, acts of service and words of affirmation.

Tiny LifeThe Sunflower Fund Spread

Seeds of HopeThe Sunflower Fund specifically raises funds to enable the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) to expand its database of potential bone marrow stem cell donors. This will give patients suffering from leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders a chance of finding a matching donor.

“The Fund in KZN has been in operation for eight years and with the generous assistance of volunteers, corporates, schools and supporters the region has been able to recruit more donors, educate the South African public on the plight of leukaemia sufferers and raise funds to meet the cost of tissue typing. We are very excited about having two new staff members to help us raise the necessary funds to reach our goal of significantly increasing the SABMR during the coming years,” said Stephanie Berry, PR & Event Specialist for the Sunflower Fund in Durban.

Kenwyn Geyser, with a background in Human Resources Management and years of managerial experience in Marketing and Sales, will head up PR in Pietermaritzburg, Midlands, Hilton and the Berg. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or being added to her events database can contact Kenwyn on 083 632 3224 or [email protected].

Multi-talented Mandy Bergsma, who has a wealth of experience and knowledge across a number of people-oriented industries, has been appointed the new Donor Recruitment Specialist for KZN. Anyone interested in having an awareness or educational talk and a donor drive done at their school, college or company, can contact Mandy on 071 443 8317 or [email protected].

Summer Party: Hot Tips!Great summer weather calls for outdoor fun! What better way than to throw a garden party to welcome your friends and family. A few tips to celebrate in style:

Drink up! Keep your guests hydrated with ice cold beverages such as home-made lemonade. Add some crushed strawberries or slices of lemon and mint for that extra crisp taste. Serve it in a glass jar dispenser with glasses and paper straws to complete the look! (Add some gin for the adults!)

Feed them! Keep it light and refreshing. Fruit kebabs, mini quiches and summer salads are all a great combination for a quick, easy and tasty lunch. Cut some watermelon into triangles and place on an ice-cream stick – such a delicious and healthy snack for the kids.

Prep ahead! Do as much as you can before your guests arrive. This allows you time to mingle and enjoy your time with family and friends.

Decorate! Every party needs a theme. Nautical colours are the latest trend so try pairing navy blue, white and red together for a classy yet relaxed overall look and feel.

Have fun! Make sure you have background music, and pool activities for the kids.

Don’t forget the sunscreen, umbrellas and towels. Enjoy…

You get ten x 10g sachets in each box.
