By now you’ve probably realised that I have a rather soft for The Sunfl ower Fund, and am super excited that Nati onal Ban-dana Day is coming up this month. Support The Sunfl ower Fund’s Nati onal Bandana Day on 12th October and share a litt le happiness by purchasing your ban-dana from Pick n Pay for only R25 (I love the funky bright, neon designs this year). All funds raised through this campaign will allow The Sunfl ower Fund to share a litt le happiness by being able to recruit more bone marrow stem cell donors to join the SA Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). The Sunfl ower Fund’s work has seen the Registry grow from a mere 800 donors in 2000 to more than 65 500 registered donors today. “This is an achievement, however it’s only the ‘ti p of the iceberg’ - we need to conti nue our quest and build the SABMR into a database which has at least 400 000 people registered,” said Tina Botha, Founder-Director of The Sunfl ower Fund. “Like a perennial sunfl ower, these bandanas are back in full force every Oc-tober, blooming bright to remind us all that there are people less fortunate than ourselves who conti nuously fi ght against this disease.” For more informati on on Nati onal Ban-dana Day or how to become a bone mar-row stem cell donor, call the toll free line on 0800 12 10 82 or visit www.sunfl ower-fund.org.za.

Struggling to Lose the Weight You Gained During

Pregnancy? With Renu Slimming Clinic you can drop one to two dress sizes (in the targeted area) with one course of treatments, guar-anteed*. This is achieved by use of the fol-lowing treatments:

• For stubborn fat i-lipo is used. This revo-luti onary low level laser system liquifi es subcutaneous fat that the body then con-verts to usable energy. It’s like liposucti on but without the surgery, at a fracti on of the cost, and pain free! Body shaping is achieved by positi oning the lasers on tar-geted areas. This gives you the ability to tell your body which fat you want burned off . Areas commonly treated are butt ocks, thighs (inner and outer), stomach, love handles, upper arms and chin.

• For those who are unable to burn off the liquidised fat through exercise, Renu off ers a sauna blanket that burns 600 calo-ries in 40 minutes. It sounds rigorous, but this treatment is quite relaxing. It detoxes and improves circulati on as well as having numerous other benefi ts.

• For general slimming Renu can do an organic wrap, which gives dramati c re-sults in just 60 minutes. It detoxes the body, tones and fi rms the skin, improves the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and spider veins. Long lasti ng results are guaranteed*. A course of six treatments is recommended for opti mal results.

Breast Cancer & BRCA TestingBreast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 1 (BRCA1) and BRCA2 are human genes that pre-vent uncontrolled cell growth. Mutation of these genes is linked to hereditary cancer of the breast, ovaries, cervix, uterus, pancreas, prostate, stomach, skin and colon. Although BRCA mutations increase the risk it only accounts for 5% to 10% of all breast cancers. In the general population 12% of females may develop breast cancer where-as in females with positive mutated BRCA 60% may develop breast cancer. Men with a mutated BRCA gene are also at risk of developing breast cancer. The frequency of BRCA mutations is greater in certain racial and ethnic groups. A genetic counsellor assesses the family history of cancer to evaluate if there is increased risk of cancer. The need to test for BRCA mutations is then determined. This risk is higher if a first or second degree relative developed breast (including male relatives) or ovarian cancer. A blood sample is collected for the test.

WHO should test for BRCA? In a family with a history of breast/ovarian cancer, that family member should be tested first. Only if that person tests positive should other family members consider testing. A positive test provides information on a person’s RISK of developing cancer as not all women with a positive test will develop cancer. If a person tests positive, it is recommended to have more regular cancer screening tests done. Some women may elect for prophylactic surgery as in the case of Angelina Jolie or to use certain drugs that can decrease the risk of developing cancer.

Dinner Dance Fundraiser A Dinner Dance is being held to raise much needed funds for The Mitchell Centre. The event takes place on Friday 18 October, 6.30pm at the Alan Paton Hall, Maritzburg College (Princess Margaret Drive Entrance). Dress is formal and the cost is R300 p.p. or R2500 for a table of 10. There will be a 500 Club Ticket Draw with great prizes on the night. Mitchell Buxton Forman, four year old son of Murray and Donna Buxton Forman, a well-known Maritzburg family, has become profoundly handicapped over the past two years due to his severe epilepsy.

The Mitchell Centre was born out of a response to Mitchell’s needs and has been opened to other children with special needs. It is at present a home-based, non-profit stimulation centre that caters for children up to the age of 10 who are severely epi-leptic or disabled (dependent on their needs and mobility). Therapists are able to treat the children on site. The aim of the centre is to allow these special children to have social contact, be stimulated and to aid their development in the most loving way possible. Mitchell was born perfectly healthy but just after his second birthday, in May 2011, he had his first seizure. In June he had his second seizure and it was all downhill from there. It has been almost two years since then. Despite having tried various medica-tions Mitchell now has on average fifteen seizures a day, both in and out of sleep.

How to Help in Pietermaritzburg• Ethembeni (meaning Place of Hope) was established by the Howick Community Church in November 2000 as a social outreach programme in the township of Mpo-phomeni, about 12kms outside the town of Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Today, this outreach has developed into an independent, registered non-profi t organi-sati on with programmes aimed at caring for sick and vulnerable adults and children aff ected and infected by HIV and AIDS. Ethembeni’s vision is to see families free from HIV, AIDS and TB.

Ethembeni’s mission statement is: We exist to bring hope to families aff ected by HIV, AIDS and TB in the KZN Midlands by providing comprehensive and gender-specifi c care and preventi on services. Mpophomeni has a populati on of about 25 000 of whom more than 80% are un-employed. The HIV infecti on rate is one of the highest in the area contributi ng to a high mortality rate.

• The GIMRF (Grace Internati onal Minis-tries Revival of Faith) was founded in 2003 and is based in Dambuza, Edendale. The GIMRF mission is to service over 500 cli-ents and develop a support base, a sense of responsibility, pride and dignity to the infected and aff ected HIV/AIDS communi-ty. From their daycare centre, they also do feeding schemes, counselling and provide OVCs with educati on, food and clothing. GIMRF also do workshops based on com-munity needs such as bookkeeping.

Cricket School of Excellence Opens in PMB

The Cricket School of Excellence (CSE) has been running for the past 14 years in Johannesburg and the Western Cape. The school itself was founded by Ryan Maron and has now expanded to regions throughout the Western Cape, Johannes-burg, East London and, most recently, Pi-etermaritzburg. CSE is a company that focuses on provid-ing cricket-related services to schools, businesses and individuals. Its mission is to develop cricket superstars through cut-ti ng edge technical and behavioural train-ing. At this stage they do holiday clinics, private coaching, group coaching, cricket-themed birthday parti es and they have an established development programme. The recent launch of CSE in Pietermar-itzburg presents junior cricketers in this region with an exciti ng opportunity to parti cipate in a well-structured and well-organised cricket programme. CSE works closely with the stakeholders of cricket and aims to develop junior cricketers in line with the pathways systems outlined by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and more in-ternati onal trends. Along with various sponsors CSE aims to promote healthy, acti ve parti cipati on for the youth during holiday periods and throughout the year for ages 4 to 18. Holi-day clinics in Pieter-maritzburg are to take place 9 to 12 Decem-ber and 6 to 9 January. School term teach-ing comprises school coaching, private one-on-one coaching and cricket-themed birth-day parti es.
