Every year Alice asks me to write the Edi-tor’s Letter for the June/Father’s Day issue, and I generally always write about our kids and being a father. This year I’m deviating from the norm, and want to tell you about an amazing gift that I received for Christmas last year from the wife and kids – it’s a subscription for an awesome magazine for those fathers who are obsessed with gadgets (I know I am), and it’s a gift that just keeps on giving for the whole year! Stuff magazine publishes info on all the latest cell phones, TVs, gaming consoles, notebooks, home entertainment systems and a whole bunch more (even coffee machines). In addition to giving you all the specs for each item, it also compares and ranks them from 1 – 10, so if you’re look-ing for the latest “must have” gadget, you MUST check out Stuff magazine.

Why not get your man a subscription for Father’s Day... and make his year?

Titbits on Breastfeeding Breastmilk is ALIVE. It is milk in its purest form that contains all nutrients needed for your baby to grow and develop optimally in ev-ery way: physically, mentally and emotion-ally. No other milk even comes close for human babies. For example, breastmilk contains a different kind of fat and a dif-ferent kind of protein to what is used in any artificial infant milk (formula).

Breastfeeding nurtures the mother-child bond. The hormones present in a nursing mother help her to relax and care for baby:

• Prolactin, the hormone that is respon-sible for how MUCH milk a mother makes, is called the “mothering hormone”. Be-cause of this hormone, wild animals that are still nursing will fight to the death any intruder that threatens their young. Once these mammals have weaned their off-spring they no longer show this strong urge to protect as they did before weaning. This is the way nature was designed. This is not to say that mothers who formula-feed their babies do not love and protect them! But there definitely is a powerful enhancement in the bond and protection that breast-feeding mothers feel towards their babies, especially once over the initial hardships of breastfeeding in the first few days/weeks. • Oxytocin, the “love hormone” that helps your milk to flow or “let down”, also helps you to totally relax and feel an incred-ible love wash over you for your baby. You may feel like dozing off while feeding, and baby also quickly relaxes and nods off as this hormone is also present in the breast-milk! No wonder mothers complain that baby is falling asleep at the breast! Enjoy this natural cocktail of hormones while nur-turing your baby.

Belly Dance Your Way Through Pregnancy

Last year two of Bambi Ogram’s Desert Rose Dance Studio dancers, Tracy and Kerryn, were pregnant. Kerryn came to classes until she was six months along, but then had chest problems and so stopped dancing. Tracy, however, not only attend-ed classes twice a week, with the blessing of her doctor, but also went with the stu-dio to Cape Town when she was 27 weeks pregnant to participate in an International Oriental Dance Festival. Then, she strutted her stuff in the studio’s end-of-year show – at nearly 30 weeks pregnant - proudly dis-playing her beautiful belly! The audience could not believe how supple, gorgeous and light on her feet such a heavily preg-nant woman could be! As a low-impact form of exercise, belly dancing is an ideal way for mums-to-be to stay fit. The exercise teaches you to breathe while doing other things and so can help you breathe your way through the pain of delivery – especially if you want to give birth the natural way. With its sinu-ous, circular movements it builds strength in legs, back and core muscles so that the aches of pregnancy are also minimised. Belly dancing is an ancient Middle East-ern dance form that is woman-centred. It helps develop flexibility and a positive self-image which makes it, in fact, also ideal for girls and women of all ages.

If you are interested in attending a free introductory class, please

Sweet Pea Creations Gift Shop and Nursery

Sweet Pea Creations, situated in the Mid-lands, opened its doors in November 2011. The shop’s business vision has been to support only South African craftsmanship and everything for sale is proudly made in South Africa. The creativity in South Af-rica is inspiring and Sweet Pea Creations owner, Lorna Symons, searches far and wide for beautifully created goodies with which to stock her shop. The business sup-ports several local community projects which include lovely crocheted scarves and hats as well as “Cozy Cups” which are funky enamel cups that have been cov-ered with a crocheted design, all of which have been very popular. At Sweet Pea Creations you can find fab-ric handbags, hand sewn fabric dolls, wooden words, ceramics, beaded jewel-lery, a natural soap range, greeting cards, children’s clothing and fairy dresses. You can also find various ranges of fabric and crocheted brooches, children’s hair ac-cessories and lots more in this gorgeous little shop.

The nursery stocks mainly indigenous plants with some exotics such as roses to add variety. They also sell a wide range of trees and aloes suitable for the KZN cli-mate. Many of the plants are grown on the owner’s family farm therefore allowing the plants to be well priced. Sweet Pea Creations has a Facebook page and information and pictures are frequently uploaded onto the site so that customers can follow what is in store and even order by mail!

Visit Sweet Pea Creations at the Linga Lapa com-plex (which also includes a farm stall, butchery, restaurant and kiddies’ play area). They can be found just off the N3 freeway at the Nottingham road exit and are open daily 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Every Kid Needs to be a DRUMKiD In today’s technologically advanced society it’s not often that children can return to the basics and learn something new in a fun and exciting way. DRUMKiDZ, a new ven-ture in Pietermaritzburg, is a music development programme that allows children to develop their auditory and perceptive skills through the use of Djembe drums. The high energy classes are conducted in groups in which each child receives their own Djem-be drum for half an hour over the period of eight lessons per term. Originally a venture that began in 2005 in Cape Town the programme has grown in leaps and bounds and has now become a national franchise operational in 13 locations around SA. The programme helps children develop a love of music in a fun, exciting way through the use of musical storytelling, allowing children to fully interact and develop their cognitive abilities (hand-eye co-ordination, memory, listening skills and imagination). By conducting classes in a group, children learn awareness of others and learn to work as part of a group. The classes help build self-confidence and self-discipline through activities like drumming to stories, songs and fun games. DRUMKiDZ is not only limited to the classroom but also provides drumming workshops at birthday parties for children ages 3 to 12, promising a fun and exciting experience unlike any other. The programme is also supported by innovative educational DRUM ALONG CDs and beautiful hand-crafted Djembe drums. Let the busiest drum motiva-tors around show you how it’s done! Over 1000 events this year around S.A.! Special offer: 10% discount if you book and pay a 50% deposit. Valid if booked and paid by end of August.

Young Life/Party LifeKwaZulu-Natal Museum

Situated in the heart of the city of Pietermaritzburg the KwaZulu-Natal Museum is one of the largest cultural and natural history museums in South Africa, with 10 cultural history and eight natural history galleries and many interesting temporary exhibits on a regular basis. The wide range of outstanding animal collections highlights the rich diversity of wildlife in southern Africa, including a collection of mammals (which has the last wild elephant from the area), insects, marine molluscs, amphibians and birds. The Marine Gallery is home to the rare and unusual Coelacanth – a large prehistoric fish that was thought to be extinct until it was discovered swimming the seas off the east coast of South Africa in 1938.

The Human Science Gallery deals with the intriguing history of human habitation in southern Africa. Beginning with a superb San exhibit (including a splendid rock art dis-play), it then moves on to the Iron Age people who migrated to southern Africa from central Africa around 2000 years ago, the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and the Late Iron Age civilisation that inhabited them, and then on to the early Portuguese explorers who were the first Europeans to travel to these shores. The Old Pietermaritzburg Gallery shows a fabulous reconstruction of a Pietermaritzburg street in the Victorian era. Includ-ing an apothecary, pawnbroker, dressmaker, blacksmith, jeweller, and a wheelwright shop, it is an attraction not to be missed.

Recently the Museum installed an Internet café and learners’ resource library and boasts an impressive 16 computers and even a film room. Become a fan of the mu-seum’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/kznmuseum and post a comment to win a year’s free entry to the museum. Five winners will be drawn.

Invest in Your Child’s Future “We teach the child, not the subject,” says Lauren Fryer of Tu-tor Pietermaritzburg. “This is not a generic or group approach,” she continues. “Each child at Tutor is on his or her own personal programme to address his or her particular needs.” Tutor offers tuition in English, Afrikaans, maths, high school science and ac-countancy. Lauren gives the assurance that if you enrol your child with Tutor they’ll plug the gaps in your child’s knowledge and understanding … and so much more. Tutor will boost your child’s self-esteem and foster a positive attitude to learning. Why choose Tutor? Debbie Risk, the other half of Tutor’s dual partnership, says there are many convincing reasons to en-trust your child’s development to them: • They have enjoyed 12 years of success. • The Tutor programme is designed for South African school pupils. • They con-duct comprehensive individual assess-ments. • Tutor pinpoints concepts your child has missed and builds from there. • They plan a unique programme for your child. • Your child thrives with one-on-one, personal tuition and individual attention. • They monitor progress continuously. • Many well-respected leaders in educa-tion support Tutor and their approach. Tutor will not only improve your child’s school marks but will also lay a solid foun-dation for future learning. In a positive, en-couraging and empathetic context, your child will blossom. Sani Pass Hotel and Leisure ResortBusiness Boom in the Mountains

Turn a business conference into an all-round enjoyable experience by booking your group into the Sani Pass Hotel. Apart from excellent conference facilities, the hotel, which has recently undergone major refurbishments, is situated in the Mkomazana valley of the Drakensberg Mountains and offers a wealth of pleasurable outdoor activi-ties.

The hotel has two well-equipped conference venues that can take up to 150 del-egates, plus additional rooms for smaller meetings. Conference packages include morning and afternoon tea, coffee and muffins, necessary equipment (notebooks, pens, flipcharts, overhead projectors) and mints and bottled water. Specialised au-diovisual equipment can be hired and team-building activities and live entertainment can be arranged for you. In between the all-important business meetings encourage your delegates to take advantage of the hotel’s many leisure activities. You could arrange a trip up Sani Pass and into Lesotho, they could have a game of bowls or a turn on the nine-hole golf course. They could enjoy a quiet walk through the forest or take in the mountain views on a quad bike or horseback trail. If they need some extra destressing then send them to wellness and beauty centre for some R&R. Perhaps one of your lunches could even be a picnic in the outdoors.

The Sani Pass Hotel can easily accommodate large groups (for example weddings) without guests ever feeling cramped. Rooms and public areas are spacious and spread out and the terraces and huge garden area add to the feeling of being close to nature. Book your next conference at the Sani Pass Hotel and Leisure Resort and have a refreshing break at the same time!
